People who have pro-anorexia profiles

Is there a way to "report" people's profiles who are advocating anorexia on mfp?
Yes, and I do often.
Send Steven a link to their profile. Put Pro-ANA in the subject line. He's very diligent about responding.
And before anyone jumps in my *kitten* about it... there is a difference between working toward recovery and promoting it!
Thank you. They are promoting it and using the site for that.0 -
I think we should ban people who pass judgment on others.
Yes!0 -
It's almost comical how so many of you are so quick to pass judgement on the OP, that you continually miss the word "A D V O C A T E" (eating disorders).
There is a huge difference between a true 'disease' and just trying to be fashionable.

This is a tough subject. I have actively had private conversations with a few (now former) MFPals who were promoting "ana" behavior and very simply stated that I was concerned for their health. In a few situations I deleted those people because they were not attempting to recover and it was too disturbing/difficult for me personally to read much of what they and their friends posted, and I did not feel that I was able to support them in the way that they needed.
Pro-ana threads and topics are not allowed on the site, but people who are dealing with any stage of an ED are NOT banned. And they shouldn't be--it sounds like from the posts in this topic that many people in recovery are using the site as a tool to get healthy. Which is awesome and I commend all of you who have shared your personal struggles here!
In the end, we are responsible for ourselves and our own behavior. If it disturbs you, don't be-friend them. But reporting them is not necessary.0 -
I know I am trying to recover from anorexia and use the site to count calories and many of them want to be friends. I tell them when they are ready for recovery I will be their friends and then I tell them how the last 25 years of my life has been ruined and how I have damaged my body. That does get to some of them esp since i have almost died a couple of times. But they really have no idea what they are asking for. But it also is an illness at the same time and when I weighed my highest or my lowest at 87 lbs(5ft 10) I thought I looked the same. So they do need help because sometimes it is beyound your control, but I dont think it is right to support one another in an unhealthy way. That isnt being a friend. They might think that about themselves but to encourage someone else is a different thing. I would never tell somebody good job for not eating all day! They get the opposite and then I am usually not their friend anymore. But try to remember it truely is a disease that effects your brain and how you think. It isnt just a will power thing. If that was the case it would be so easy to get over it..and it isnt!0

I'm recovered from bulimia but relapse sometimes, and find support from my friends on here. Should I be banned too?
Are you promoting bulimia as a way to lose weight? Read what she said before getting defensive.
I'm not the one getting defensive.0 -
Look, it isn't about judging other people here and shouldn't be. You never know enough about another person or situation to pass judgment, however it is spelled out pretty clearly in the guidelines of MFP that pro-ana is not okay and is not what this site is about. I don't go snooping through other peoples profiles, but anyone starting a group or posting along the lines of pro-ana should expect to be kicked off.
It did start off as a thread and people were asking her about her low calories. That is what caught my attention. I do not normally go looking at people's profiles, but this one proved to be what I suspected.0 -

No, you're the one not reading for comprehension.
Look into that.

You just asked if you should be banned because you're in recovery but relapse, that's getting defensive and willfully misinterpreting what she said.0 -
I tried to start a 'former' anorexic topic on here and no one replied. I'm now sure it's because it was TABOO on this site. All I wanted to do is talk to other REFORMED anorexics and how they coped with not getting back into poor eating habits.
I was down to 98 lbs when I was anorexic and I got up to 170 over the years. I'm now down to 160 and have lost it in a safe way. I was in no way promoting it, just trying to see if any other people had issues, such as going back to old habits when changing their eating and lifestyle and how they coped with it.
I know it's a life long issue and I never had professional help for it but, I really don't see how you could 'talk' someone into being anorexic. It just doesn't happen. No more so than you can talk someone into being bi-polar. It's a mental disorder and I don't think that anyone should be banned from a healthy website like this for it just like someone who is 500+ lbs shouldn't be banned for gorging themselves on a whole cake. We are human for pete's sake. Instead of stalking profiles to see who is anorexic, work on your own. And before you start bashing my public profile and what I eat or don't eat.. I eat more than what is logged on here, it's just healthy snacks that I eat after dinner. I keep it public because I feel it makes me accountable for eating healthy food and the right amt. of it.0 -
Isn't overeating a disorder?
Awww yeah. Success!! :drinker:
And look at all the people who are here so they can STOP overeating. Try again.0 -
Is there a way to "report" people's profiles
actually you could have stopped with that.
You're right, there should be a way to report profiles, for any of a large number of reasons
Perhaps they'll add that with the next update.0 -
BECAUSE IT BEARS REPEATING....
People do not get booted off of the site just b/c they appear to have an ED, nor even if they are promoting an ED, even if they are reported. The mods WILL however (to my understanding) do their own research and have a private conversation with anyone who is reported for actively PROMOTING EDs.
It's not a witch hunt. It's about not giving access to a forum to those who seek to cause harm with their habits.
Thank you.0 -
Is there a way to "report" people's profiles who are advocating anorexia on mfp? I had stumbled over a topic that had been locked by mfp because it was promoting anorexia. I noticed the girls name which was something about skinny, I cannot remember it now. I went on her profile and she and her friends were really advocating anorexia on their profiles. I did not see anywhere to report the profile.
...lots and lots of people on here have "skinny" or "lets get thin" or something like that in their profile name. That does NOT automatically mean they are pro-anorexia. Just a thought.0 -
And over eating is an eating disorder to that you can die from and people talk about how much they have eaten or gone over should they be banned...no I think not..just supported!0

There is a "report" button that I have used when I see obviously underaged users using the site (sorry, but I do. If you tell me you're under 18, you are violating the terms of this site). But I think it's "report post" not "report profile." You can still give a quick explanation of what you're reporting.0 -

Exactly. It was not written as someone struggling, it was this is my goal for "looking" anorexic.0 -

So, it's okay to be a member if you overeat, but not if you undereat?
I might be reading this wrong, sorry if so... I really am just trying to understand.0 -

I think many people in this thread are failing to see the difference between pro-ana, and anorexic. The pro in pro-ana means "for" or "promoting". It's the opposite of "con".
It's ok to be anorexic and working toward recovery. It's not really ok to promote anorexia.
It's ok to be overfat and working toward recovery. It's not really ok to promote obesity.0 -
So please, nobody suggest we just ignore them when we can do something to help them.
It it really our responsibility though? They're obviously trying to kill themselves and if I want to ignore someone doing that, then so be it.0 -

Overeating/undereating and looking for help/support in fixing the problem, member-approved.
Overeating/undereating and looking for support/to influence others INTO said lifestyle? Not so good.
Recovering persons are a different story altogether, but I don't think pro-eds have much of a place here. And I doubt the ones supporting each other in starving are really looking to change.0 -

I totally understand that. Between the statements and the name, it made me take a look.0 -
I think this really is the same argument as governmental involvement in people's lives. What gives the powers that be the right to police these people's lives, or anybody's for that matter. Is it really up to a "governing" body (like MFP in this case) to stipulate how people choose to treat their bodies? If they are in danger, or promoting dangerous habits, shouldn't judging or helping them be the responsibility of their parents, friends, teachers, social network??
Yes I think anorexia is bad. Yes I think they need help. But unless it is your daughter, sister, student etc...stay out of it. It's none of your business.0 -

The people on MFP are trying to lose weight, that's why those over eaters are here. They're not here to eat MORE to gain more. Pro-Ana/Mia people are abusing the site to lose weight in unhealthy ways that involve starvation or binge/purge/restriction cycles. Overeaters on MFP are here to recover that's why they don't get banned, people who are here PROMOTING and encouraging eating disorders aren't, that's the difference.0 -
Wow this sure caught a lot of peoples attention! Actually though if someone looked at my pictures they could think that I was pro ana when I am really not. Sometimes we have to be careful how we interpret things. Wonder if there would be the same response if the topic was about pro obese? Everyone is so quick to judge. I thank all of you that are not. I get judged enough from people day to day here in the real world. Dont need it in the cyber world too0

I did not day anything about pictures. It was what she said. There There was no room for misinterpretation.0 -
They need this website and the encouragement of all of us...dont get them banned, get them help. I used to binge and purge as a young girl and then the binge got out of control and I went on a dangerous path.0

To the people who are saying worry about yourself , maybe they should read the guidelines
3. No Promotion of Unsafe Weight-Loss Techniques or Eating Disorders
b) No pro-anorexia or pro-bulimia posts, groups, profile names, or profile bylines. Photos intended to promote or glamorize extreme thinness are also not permitted.
And also
2. No Hi-Jacking Topics
Please stay on-topic within a forum topic. Off-topic or derogatory remarks are disrespectful. Please either contribute politely and constructively to a topic, or move on without posting. This includes posts that encourage the drama in a topic to escalate.
See! This is why you're my friend...lol!0
