I grew up in Bournemouth on the South coast of the UK.

My weekends come rain, sleet, snow, fog or sun would be to work until 11:30pm delivering pizza and then drive down the beach and sit listening to the waves and watching the moonlight.

I now live in Swindon, wiltshire and hate it. It is atleast 2 hour drive to any beach in the UK.

I have seen English sea, North sea, Atlantic ocean, mediterranian (sp?), pacific ocean, Gulf of mexico, and probably a few I have forgotten.

Our honeymoon was spent on the west coast of the states where we took 2 days to drive Route 1 from LA to San Francisco. We then did it in reverse the following year.

I miss the sea/ocean/coast and am hoping to one day move to Florida so I can be by the ocean again and also so the warmth helps my daughters disability.

My girls have been learning to swim since they were 6 months and are like me complete waterbabies..

I live on a tiny island, 12 miles by 26 and so it would be pretty hard to NOT see it

    Isle of Wight? Lovely place!

Well done Sir, fair play to you on that x

That's so weird Karen. For some reason I've always assumed you were American.

For the OP - 90 minutes isn't very long, why don't you drive and see it? Have you never had a beach holiday?

I live 80 miles from the coast. Love it! Once when I was there, I met a man who had traveled from Kansas just to see the ocean, because he'd never seen it. He was overwhelmed by it. He said that he never knew such beauty existed, and said he could just stand in that one spot forever, listening to the waves. He had SO many questions! After talking for a while, I told him "You can't travel all the way from Kansas to Oregon, to see the Pacific, without taking part in it!" I told him "get your feet wet, jump the waves, taste the salty water, write your name in the sand!" Within minutes, I swear he'd gone from being in his mid-20s to being a young boy, running up and down the beach, getting soaked, and shouting into the wind! It was a fun day.

    I love this story!

I dont live near an ocean, but my mother took us on a trip to flordia when I was in the fifth grade, it was beautiful but too cold for us to get in. so we stood on the beach waving at my dad b/c my mom told us that he would be able to see us waving. haha. (he was in equador w/ his troop b/c they had a natural disaster)

that's been..14 years ago. I wish I could see the ocean again! I barely remember it!

Yes, the Atlantic and Pacific both...even flew over it to go from the US to Europe. I live in Michigan, so surrounded by water, and if I'm not close to some body of water often enough...I start to feel out of sorts...

It's cold and grey here right now... I would sell one of my children to sit on a sunny beach by the ocean right now!! I lived in an apartment the beach in the Dominican Republic for a year.... heaven....

We live near the Lake Huron now, it rivals a lot of beaches, we spend the entire summer there... I love the ocean...

I live in San Francisco. The stable were I ride is on the bluffs overlooking the ocean. I have lived on the coast my whole life.

Crazy thought to me that there are people who've never seen the ocean, but I remember my Minnesotan grandmother telling me how scared she was the first time she saw it.

I can see it if I`m on the second floor of my building. I`m about a 2 minute walk from the shore. I couldn't imagine not being around the ocean.

I live on a mile wide barrier island that sits between the Indian River and the Atlantic Ocean. I can hear the surf when my windows are open and my cars are continually covered in a layer of salty mist. I love it here!

Cool, I live in Vero Beach...not on the beach but a quick 10min drive, when the weather is warm the beach is where I love to spend my time!
  • I live in the middle of the country but I've seen and swam in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, flown over the Pacific and seen Osaka Bay.

Your Minnesota grandmother should know a thing or two about water! I grew up near Minneapolis but lived in Duluth when I was very young. Our house there had a breathtaking view of Superior.

I stare at the San Francisco Bay from my office every day. The bf and I have agreed to never live more than 90 minutes from any given ocean. :) Landlocked isn't for us!

I live just a few miles from it. My first house as a real grownup was a beach house. A slider off the bedroom right to the beach. LOVED it, though it was really sketchy in the winter!

I grew up going to 'the shore' every weekend or so (steamed crabs, hun?). Missed it terribly when I moved out to the Midwest. Then we moved to a place where we could see the Firth of Clyde from a hill behind our house. It was nice to be near water again. Now, I'm back to missing the ocean.
