Good Morning Kechie and others!
I did not sleep very well last night. I don't know if it had anything to do with my 7 miles yesterday evening or not...but I feel good today.
The plan is 3 miles this evening for me. Tomorrow is my 5k!
Happy Friday!0 -
Would love to join in -- and get inspired!!!
I ran 5.5 miles today -- training for a 1/2 marathon in September.
oh -- and Happy Friday to you all -- let the countdown to the weekend begin!!!0 -
Hello, MFP Runners!
I just signed up for MIT (Marathoner's In Training) and start my half marathon training tomorrow morning! So excited!!! I know my diet is going to have to change drastically to properly fuel my body. Any tips/advice from you pros?
Thanks!

Eat! lol Thats my advice. Seriously though, make sure that you refuel your body with carbs and protein, its very important for runners to make sure to eat enough. A good after run drink is chocolate milk, or I drink chocolate soy milk. Also get good running shoes, this is one thing you need to spend some money on, go to a running store and get fitted and they can help you choose a good one. Goodluck....!

And no running for me, I really need a day off, my knee is killing me :grumble: so frustrated with it!0 -
Yesterday I ran my very first mile and a half, and because I'm a masochist it was on an extremely hilly/mostly uphill course. I just wanted to show myself that I can definitely handle the 1.5mi race I have scheduled for the 6th of June. Hard to believe I'm the same person who a) 5 weeks ago couldn't run one minute without gasping for air and b) thought he'd never be able to run a mile.
Now I just have to work on getting faster. But I'm going to wait til I'm done with c25k for that.0 -

Ditto! Your body needs fuel to run. I always have chocolate milk after my "long"runs.
Also, check out Runner's World for a training plan. I used the Smart Coach tool last year to train and race without injury. Plus, I finished 12 minutes faster than my goal time.
You can do it!0 -

Way to go! I too used c25k to get started running. I still remember not being able to run a minute. Last year I ran a half marathon. Hang in there. With consistency, you will get better!0 -
Yes -- I'm VERY excited! the marathon entry included a training program through New Balance. Hopefully I will be ready! My long run average about 10 miles -- but I usually run on a treadmill (have 2 small kids). So the hardest part is getting outside and getting used to the heat and humidity!0

msarro, you are an inspiration to us all! Congrats on your run!! I know you've been working on the couch to 5k program (so am I ). I also run on a hilly course - it's an excellent workout!
jabdye, welcome to the runners club! We're glad to have you.
Eating - go figure! Who would have known that you could lose weight AND eat well!
I'm going running tonight and am so excited about it! I'm going to try to do 3 miles if I can. My legs and hiney are still sore from my run on Wednesday so I'm going to have to try to work through it tonight.
Happy Friday to all (woo hoo, the start of a 3 day weekend!!)
Ketchie, thanks so much for starting this thread. I'm really glad you're here for us.0 -

Do you use New Balance shoes? Are they decent running shoes?0 -
Good luck on your run -- just crank up some good tunes and run forrest run!!!0

I've been trying them all lately -- I've tried Mizuno -- Saucony -- and currently have Etonics. There is a great running store in my area. The owner measured and fitted me -- even had me runon the treadmill to see if I pronated -- and although I was set on Saucony, I switched to Etonic. they are great -- just got them last month so we'll how they wear. Definitely invest in good shoes -- that's one thing I do not skimp on!0

By the way, I did not run today. I am scheduled to rest today. However, I may head out for a run later tonight anyway. My stress levels are pretty high b/c my mother in law will be riding in on her broom this weekend.
Wishing everyone a fun, safe, looooong weekend!:drinker:0 -

Running is definitely good for your soul! I always have a whole new perspective after a run! Good luck with the monster-in-law :grumble:
enjoy your weekend -- and your stress-relieving run!0 -
Hi y'all! TGIF!!!!!! It's date night tonight, so I'm STOKED! I ran 8.25 miles today with some lifting after. It felt awesome! Happy weekend!!!0

Oh I'm so jealous!! I would love to go into a store and just have them measure and fit me. I just started running and haven't convinced my husband that I need to invest in really good shoes. Don't get me wrong, he believes in good shoes, but I think he's waiting to see if I'll stick with it before we start spending a lot of money ( I just started running though I've been walking for years) (lol, and plus I keep wanting all these other gadgets, like HRM and dvd's). I did get a pair of New Balance shoes (which is why I asked) ...it wasn't too expensive and not the bottom of the line so those will work for the time being. At least until I can get to a store where I can get fitted for shoes :happy:0 -

Whew, I know where you're coming from there.
Good luck tonight!0 -
Today is a rest day--my apartment has exploded from all the neglect this week. I have been so focused on running--need to do some cleaning up! I did get a new sports bra and got another pair of my shoes!! Yay! Have a good weekend.0

Somewhere between 6.25 - 6.5 miles today. Made a detour to add hills so not 100% on the distance.
Trying for 8 tomorrow.
Happy running!

No running for me today. I ran 3.5 miles yesterday after a 5 week rest due to an injury.
I have a question for you more experienced runners. I have been battling shin splints for quite some time and my shins were very aggrevated when I sprained my ankle. After not running for 5 weeks they felt good. After I ran yesterday, the pain came back with a vengance. I have new shoes so I don't think it is my sneakers. Do you think this is something more serious? I thought about going to see a sports medicine doctor but wasn't sure if that is the right course of action. Let me tell you my shin hurts so much that is painful to the touch.0 -
Forgot to post...I passed 75 miles today since April 20th!!!
Treated myself to a pedicure....was going to wait until 100, but....what the heck!
It was wonderful! :happy:0 -

I found this on the web in regards to shin splints...
This multifaceted approach includes:
Workouts such as stationary bicycling or pool running: These will allow maintenance of cardiovascular fitness.
Icing reduces inflammation.
Anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin); naproxen (Aleve/Naprosyn), are also a central part of rehabilitation.
A 4-inch wide Ace bandage wrapped around the region also helps reduce discomfort.
Calf and anterior (front of) leg stretching and strengthening addresses the biomechanical problems discussed above and reduce pain.
Pay careful attention to selecting the correct running shoe based upon the foot type (flexible pronator vs. rigid supinator). This is extremely important. In selected cases, shoe inserts (orthotics) may be necessary.
Stretching and strengthening exercises are done twice a day.
Run only when symptoms have generally resolved (often about two weeks) and with several restrictions:
A level and soft terrain is best.
Distance is limited to 50% of that tolerated preinjury.
Intensity (pace) is similarly cut by one half.
Over a three-six week period, a gradual increase in distance is allowed.
Only then can a gradual increase in pace be attempted.0 -

congratulations on 75 miles -- that's great!!!
And a pedicure -- What a great idea -- especially for a runner!!! I think I will add that to my list of rewards0 -

Sorry to hear that you are still battling with shin splints. A long time ago when I tried running I had a very hard time with shin splints and ended up quitting running because of them. I hope you can find a solution so you can stick with it.
A lot of the information on line recommends starting with your shoes. Even though they are new, they may not be the right shoe for you. I would go back to the place where I was fitted and see what they have to say. If they aren't very helpful, try taking your new shoes to a new place and getting their opinion. Once you've been wearing the shoe, they can tell a lot better if the shoe is right for you.
I got fitted for my first pair of shoes and they did not work for me. I have plantaar fasciitis if I run in the wrong shoes or up my mileage too quickly. My second pair worked. So I went back to the same place for pair number 3. Guess what? They put me in the wrong shoe again.
I have also seen some articles that blame shin splints on non-running muscles(can't recall which ones). I do recall a mention of weak hips being a problem.
Keep us posted.0 -
You are right about the hips thing Kechie.
Sometimes what someone may think is "shin splints" is actually caused from tightness in the hips. Funny how it's related. But I have horribly tight hips and if I do not stretch long enough or warm up long enough, or even sometimes when I do, I will have aches in my shins, knees, hips, quads, etc.
Needless to say, stretching my hips is my main focus warming up and cooling down.
ps - decided not to run this evening! I ended up having to run some errands and decided I may need to rest before the race bright and early in the morning0 -
hi everyone! I ran four miles this morning and then went to the spa for a pedicure
the only problem with that was i am going to run in the morning and i look and feel like a cooked lobster. i fell asleep laying out
my run is going to be painful isn't it?0
