Do you carry protection when running?

Another thread got me thinking. Do you carry anything when you go running to protect yourself?
I actually just ordered 2 small (4"x1") dog sprays, basically pepper spray. We live in a small town so I'm not worried about a man attacking. However we have cougars here and I'm terrified of them.

Always bring a condom! LOL. Actually, I run with my (big) dogs, so they are my protection!0

that made me LOL! I guess cougars are more popular with young men0 -
I wouldn't mind a cougar attacking me, as long as she was hot.0

I too run with my dog. I don't have cougars where I live but we do have lots of coyotes. I recall I was running from my tractor back to my truck in the middle of the night, (we are farmers and I was raking hay) and there were tons of coyotes getting the mice and gophers under the hay. I was so scared that I would be mistaken as a treat that I belted out every random song on the way to my truck! It most certainly wasn't pretty, but it worked!0

I'm ordering bear mace. After talking with a few people, it is apparently the mother of all maces. There was an attempted rape on the trail I run on last week. Luckily, the girl got away.0

No, but my fiance really wishes I would when I run a particular trail. I've never had any problems, but it's probably not a bad idea.0

^Can I take him running with me?0 -
I got stopped by some unsavoury types once, and pretended to be a COMPLETE and UTTER psychopath...it scared the living bejeeezus out of them. I am looking forward to doing that again, but equally, hope I never have to.0

Right now I just carry my cell phone & key. It's probably something I should start thinking about. I think I'm going to look into it.0

There are regular attacks/sexual assaults on running women in my city. It's soooooo disturbing.
Still, I don't carry protection. I run during the day normally. I also don't listen to music so loud that I'm completely unaware of my surroundings. I also trained in martial arts for almost five years, so I have that knowledge with me where ever I go.0 -
Nope. Live in one of the nicer neighbourhoods in the UK so I feel completely safe...and we have no terrifying wild animals. Don't see this guy eating me:
If I lived in the US, or any of the rougher parts of the UK, I'd undoubtedly carry something that was purely defensive.0 -
No, but I probably should carry my pepper spray at least. I have thought about running a particular trail on state game land, and have actually considered carrying my .45, but not sure....0
-
No. I just figure that since I am already running, I'd just run away if there was trouble.0

I think that is the cutest thing I've ever seen!!!!0 -

I can see his manly parts.0 -
Nope, not right now. Here in good ole Northern CA I apparently have to find and purchase CA approved pepper spray. I need to figure out where to find it at. I'd like a key chain style to go on my runner's belt. I feel pretty safe running without it but that might change if I come upon a big unfriendly dog!0

I pack some steaks to distract the wolves and zombies when I'm running. When I run out of those I just run faster and hope for the best.0

I run with small bottle of pepper spray that straps to your hand to make it easier. Also I run with my big lab. He might lick someone to death but they don't need to know that . I mostly run at late night or early morning. Also I lived in a big city once(mistake) and someone tried run/almost attack me at night. So now when go out overprotected and moved back to small town0

funny responses :P
But in all seriousness, YES, i always protect myself when i'm out for a run or even in the gym at night by myself- then especially actually. I carry a heavy duty mace or a taser. I've been know to take a paring knife with me if I don't have one of those 2 things. About 3 weeks ago there was a woman about my age running in my hometown and in the broad light of day on a busy road a 22 year old guy stopped his car and tried to abduct her. She kicked hhim in the nuts, and thank goodness she got his license plate. He ended up being arrested. However, it's NOT uncommon at all to hear stories where women aren't so lucky. I recommend everyone- man or woman, but especially a woman- should have protection at all times. It sucks but it's a crazy world.0 -

^THIS, 100%0 -
I run with an Ruger LCR in a Remora IWB holster. The only place that my gun doesn't go with me is into buildings where I am not allowed by law to carry it (courthouse, sheriff's office, university property).0
