101 reasons Carbs are great and should be part of your diet

Just the reply I was expecting! A statement was made that you can't be a low carb athlete, I offered proof to the contrary yet i'm the jerk. This whole thread is inflammatory and was made with the intention to incite fights with low carb, no carb people so you are guilty of the very same thing you are accusing me of.
You offered 7 athletes.
May I point you to every other athlete in the world that does eat carbs? (also, AFAIK paleo doesn't mean zero carbs)
I liked that analogy before. "You could drive a car with you're feet, doesn't mean it's a good idea."
Carl Lewis, is a vegan. Go figure.
I ran a marathon two weeks ago. I eat nothing but "carbs." That's starchy carbs like rice and potatoes. I jog everyday 5-6 miles. I am sure others who follow other diets do more. Whatever works.0 -
Carbs are delicious.
I love them too but they make me retain water and bloat out. I need to figure out which ones are doing this to me (think it's wheat).
The USDA food pyramid would fatten up a cow nicely.0 -

Exactly, stereotypes are always wrong, plus I'm sure there are way more vegan athletes then just Carl Lewis. Whatever works is a great philosophy!0 -
85% Dark Chocolate...more than just carbs fat and protein.....but those carbs do taste great!!!
Antioxidants
The Mayo Clinic suggests eating dark chocolate for its high antioxidant content, as it contains more antioxidants that most fruits or vegetables. The antioxidants in chocolate and other foods can be useful in fighting damage to cells caused by normal cell breakdown as well as exposure to dangerous substances, such as pollution and cigarette smoke. According to the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity of Selected Foods 2007, which was published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, chocolate contains more antioxidants than many fruits, such as blueberries, that are typically considered high in antioxidants

Absolutely.
It's about being aware of what you are doing and making it fit into your personal tolerances.
I guess I am 'low carb' (50g a day, I prefer to think of this as 'adequate carb' for me) but I have been known to have some chocolate or ice cream. Hell, I have some garlic bread if I feel like it. Radical.
To pick up on a previous point about low carbers being vocal, there is so much BS spouted about the 'dangers' of low carbing (I can think of a particularly dumb example yesterday) that people who live this way feel the need to speak up so others may at least get the option of trying it.
It's either that or we collectively retreat to the 'safety' of the Low Carb forum, and that isn't my way ...
I think I know the post you are talking about (the 'you need carbohydrates for your brain to work or you will die " one) - well that was pretty much slammed down by a lot of people (including me ironically who cannot see the point of low carb but who also does not like misinformation). So, that was addressed pretty well in the thread in which it was made.
Off topic: I hate dark chocolate but love milk chocolate. I need to look into how 'diluted' the benefits are for milk chocolate.0 -

Here are a couple athletes who are pretty successful on a paleo, primal or a whole foods low carb diet and corresponding links as proof.
Apolo Ohno http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/20/sports/olympics/20ohno.html?_r=2
Aaron Rodgers http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs/2010/columns/story?id=6076694
Doesn't actually say he is but he's been spotted with a paleo book.
Novak Djokovic http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703509104576327624238594818.html
John Welbourn http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?id=5021601
In this article he states a bunch of the New England Patriots were Paleo as well but didn't provide names.
Christian Vande Velde http://archive.mensjournal.com/winning-without-wheat
Grant Hill and Steve Nash http://www.azcentral.com/members/Blog/DanBickley/129699
I expect to be torn apart for posting this but I don't care.
I didn't follow your links, but I do follow tennis closely, and nowhere have I ever read that Djokovic is on a low carb diet. He eats gluten free due to celiacs disease, how's that low carb? Plenty of carbs in potatoes and rice. Going by just the titles of your links, that applies to at least one more athlete ("winning-without-wheat")0 -

I'm sorry, a thread saying carbs are delicious and a good source of energy is an "inflammatory" thread?!?!?! You have no idea what my intentions were, please speak for yourself.

It's only inflammatory if you have an axe to grind about low carb and come into this thread to do it. To the guy who posted this crap, who asked you? Do you have anything to add about why carbs are great? if not, get lost!0 -
I agree! Even as a diabetic, I think carbohydrates still have a place in a diet (not a diet diet, just everyday eating).
Also our muscles need carbs & more after a weight lifting workout.0 -
Give me fat.
1. Fat is a great source of energy.
2. Fat is more delicious than carbs will ever be.
Bacon > Crackers.0 -
The USDA food pyramid recommends an ungodly amount of grains.
Fruit is my personal favorite carbohydrate source, maybe someday we will turn more corn and wheat fields into peach orchards, so the USDA can recommend more fruit.
....except that they don't.
The food pyramid was discontinued and has been replaced with Myplate.
If you're gonna make fun of the gov't recommendations, AT LEAST keep up on what the gov't recommendations are....
As far as the thread goes, I'm all about the carbs, was when I was losing (75 lb), was when maintaining, and am now that I'm bulking. Above and beyond basic carbs I like sugar. Rocket fuel for the human body. My ability to exercise 2 hours a day and really hit it hard would be seriously compormised if I didn't eat a lot of carbs.0 -

Anyway, the USDA has changed their recommendations many times over the years. When i was a kid, it was the basic 4 food groups. The USDA still advocates eating US Agricultural products, and not necessarily what is good for you. "Myplate" STILL RECOMMENDS EATING GRAINS, in fact it's a full quarter of the plate. Man, seriously, all this information is out there. Looking it up first before you comment might help.0 -

Why do people care if I eat carbs?? If you want carbs, eat them! Why do you care if I don't? I don't care if you do eat them. To each their own. I am a runner and feel great without carbs. Just sayin...0

Well that's true LOL. Give me ribeye over fat free froyo then.0 -
Carbs are great ... when they're green veggies, full of fiber and delicious nutrients! That's pretty much my entire carb intake these days and I feel amazing. I'll leave the processed junk, sugar, and nasty grains for people who are ok with that kind of thing. I'm no longer choosing to feel like crap after I eat that stuff, no matter how delicious it may be in the moment. Feeling sluggish and bloated and with only desire to be on the sofa playing on the computer is not a good trade-off for a yummy meal, which is exactly what happens to me after I eat breads, pastas, sugars.0

#101
because if you don't incorporate them in your lifestyle and learn to live with them, you'll feel deprived.......... and the minute you introduce them back in......... guess what..................... ALL THE WEIGHT COMES BACK......!!!

Are you calling me fat?! ?!
This is the internet- I thought people were supposed to be nice here!!!!!
You totally just made my day! I love sarcasm!0 -
CARBS ARE NOT THE ENEMY!!!
Reason NUMER 1: Your brain NEEDS carbs to function properly.
No one likes a stupid lethargic person.
I'm annoyed of how uneducated some people are about food and how it serves their body.

I tend to be in a much better mood and feel fuller when I eat high-fat, and well you have to cut the calories somewhere.. but I do agree that carbs are delicious. David Mitchell says it best: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttMrSCnQnnk0

Carbs contain fiber usually and fiber is good for you and helps you feel fuller longer
Carbs contain lots of nutrients.
The phytochemicals found in carbs can be very beneficial to your health0 -

snowgrrl, your brain can use ketones for energy. It isn't the preferred energy source but low-carb doesn't mean lethargic. Also, your body can turn protein into glucose (gluconeogenesis). http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/evolutionary-psychiatry/201104/your-brain-ketones
My pet peeve: people who have vociferous opinions and are annoyed at the ignorance of others when they themselves are uninformed0
