I just started last Monday, but I've already discovered a few things I've never had before that I now LOVE including:

Greek yogurt - Haven't tried the plain yet, but the peach & strawberry Yoplait Greek 100 w/2x protein is yummers!
Baby Spinach - I put it in ALL my salads and sandwiches now

I've always been a healthy eater, but I have discovered one new item through this process - Almond milk. A while ago I found out my digestive troubles were linked to casein (milk protein) so I needed a substitute. Lactose free milk doesn't help, since it still has casein in it. Turns out, unsweetened almond milk has no sugar and 50% more calcium than cow's milk, and it can easily substitute in cooking and baking as well. I was never a huge fan of cow's milk anyway, so no loss there. :drinker:

I never ate egg whites before MFP; however, I gave them a try after seeing other people's food diary. Egg whites were not so bad. At first, I though they might had been either hard to cook or not tasty. My "assumptions" was wrong on both accounts.

im also enjoying roasted hemp seeds seasoned in sea salt,,,they are a unique combination of omega 3's and 6's and apparently a little scoop of hemp seeds on a salad or in your morning shake is the same benefit as a 4oz piece of salmon. You can eat them as a snack they taste like pumpkin seeds.

I love pumpkin seeds and eat them almost daily, but I've never had hemp seeds. I will have to look into that.

    Kale
    Swiss chard
    Seitan
    Tempah
    Almond milk

  • Greek yogurt, tofu, chia seed, flax seed, quinoa, Ezekiel Bread. I've also discovered how to make my own bread so I know what I'm putting in my body. Kids love it too.
  • Zucchini - I make EVERYTHING out of zucchini these days

Zucchini is a great addition to breakfast smoothies. Protein powder, 1/2 a banana, and some zucchini and it's amazing that the zucchini flavor does not come through at all. Same with spinach. My boys absolutely love my Swamp Water!

Hey there! First and foremost, thank you so much for your service to our country. I have the utmost respect for you.
I am sure that you have heard it before, but I'd rather state what may be the obvious in order to help a brother out. Diet soda is so very bad for our bodies. It may have less calories, but it is so loaded with everything artificial and unhealthy. If you're going to go the step of diet vs. regular maybe you can just make that extra little step of cutting it out completely.
Whatever your choice, good luck to you on your quest for health and happiness!

    Omega-bump for L8R!

Off the top of my head:

    Milk Lollies
    Couscous
    Salads(lol, really)
Roasted Butternut Squash with honey and garlic(mmm, also AMAZING in a wrap with lettuce and a little sour cream and chive sauce -just chop the chives and mix 'em in. Also the squash keeps REALLY well in the fridge so you could heat it up and have it the next day on couscous)
    Sweet potato wedges
    Nakd bars
Thai lychee honey(for greek yoghurt not the squash)
Quorn(pretty much eat it every day)
Frozen stir-fy veg(chuck it in a wok with a lil soy sauce and bam -yummy!)

Well, my list is more like "foods I've discovered on my way to lower-calorie eating", although I'm sure I'm getting much better nutrition than when I was subsisting on nothing but pizza and beer ;-)

    Pasta Zero (shirataki noodles)
    Walden Farms dressings
Pork tenderloin, but you have to marinate it in liquid for a whole day or it comes out rock-hard
Bags of frozen tilapia - super-cheap
Cantaloupe (thought I hated it but now I love it)
Friendship pot-style cottage cheese w/ Jane's Crazy Mixed-Up Salt - tastes like seasoned feta!
Hot sauce on everything - well, not fruits, but you know.
    Starfruit (carambola)
    Papayas, but they're a b1tch to peel
Jimmy Dean precooked turkey sausage links
Diet Cheerwine soda, more tart than your usual cherry soda
    Perrier Citron
    Molly McButter powdered fake butter
    Pam spray
Wishbone Parmesan Peppercorn Ranch Lite Dressing - the best-tasting lite ranch out there

And here's a few things I've eaten in past dieting stints which tasted good and filled me up for low calorie cost:

-Broiled or pan-cooked zucchini, halved, w/ melted provolone on top
-Steamed veggies w/ garlic and seasonings
-Vegetable soup - bouillon cubes + water + assorted veggies (I usually used broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, yellow squash, and sometimes carrots). You could eat a whole pot of this and spend like no calories, but the sodium content isn't great.
-Spaghetti squash w/ lite homemade sauces - my favorite used one small can basil/oregano tomato paste, one can basil/oregano diced tomatoes, and one small can salmon... simmer for several hours to get the fishiest flavor; serves 4-6

    ________________________________________

Foods I've discovered suck for dieting even though they claim to be diet food, either because they're a carb explosion that leaves you starving two hours later, or just because they don't live up to their hype:

    -Slim-Fast shakes
-Fat-free hot dogs, because you still need the bun
-Fruit juices and most fresh fruits
-Many things that say "low-fat" or "fat-free", because they often just add more sugar to compensate for the lost flavor
    -Veggie burgers
-"Sugar-free" things that merely swap sugar for sugar alcohols - yeah, those are getting digested too, just not as quickly. The calories still count.
-Any and all breakfast cereals, hot or cold!
-Vegetarian diets in general... they're almost impossible to get right, so you end up skinnyfat due to lack of the right proteins and nutrients. Although I guess it matters less if you're a woman. I have many vegetarian friends and only one of them is not skinnyfat, and he eats fish, eggs and dairy, so that doesn't even count. IMO the only good reason to go vegetarian is for ethical concerns. As a weight loss or health diet, it blows.

    Ramble ramble blah blah blah.
