Smokers – selfish scum or persecuted minority?

Irritations sure. Maybe you dont like smoke. Maybe too much smoke burns your eyes (it will burn everyones eyes) But smoke does NOT contain proteins and ALL allergies are caused by proteins. Therefore, there is no such thing as being "allergic" to smoke. Cant happen. Feel free to ask your doctor. There is no such thing as "considered and allergic reaction" it either is or isnt an allergic reaction.
This is only partially correct. It doesn't have to start as a protein, it only needs to bind to protein once it's in the body to cause an allergic reaction or a hypersensitive reaction. You still didn't answer my question.
Meh, the MD is pretty much right though. You aren't technically allergic to smoke.
The smoke can be a major irritant and cause crappy side effects, so even though he's right on the technical terms, everyone complaining of symptoms is still correct that smoke is negatively affecting their health.0 -
And yes, I can be a ****head. I dont deny that. I have no compassion for self absorbed people who think they should be able to tell others how to live. It bothers me. This is a true story that tok place years ago when I smoked. I was bowling and one of the wives of a guy on the team we were against apparently didnt like my smoke. So she says with a real snooty attitude " Um, you know Im breathing half your cigarette smoke" So I respond "Oh Yea, then you should be paying for half my Fing cigarettes"
strong hypocrisy when it comes to being "self absorbed".
Granted she didn't have to be snooty, she shouldn't have to put up with your drug addiction.0 -
Persecuted minority!!! I haven't smoked in 15 years but come on, give the smokers a break, if you you don't like it stay home!!0
-
Well then I guess you just have to get over it huh? I guess the world doesnt cater to you and you dont like it? We should all ask you what you like and then act accordingly?
It's just not really the logical thing to do.
If someone is participating in a harmful activity. A drug addiction, that can negatively affect the health of the people in the nearby area.... Why would we allow them to do it in public?
I'm fine with people who don't really care about their health/performance and choose to smoke. But I don't think I should have to change my day around to avoid the health hazards posed by their ignorance.
Well, we probably agree that some people are inconsiderate and smoking in line for the bus is just a Dbag thing to do. My problem really is the ban when it comes to businesses. If I own a business, its should be my choice as to whether or not smoking is allowed. It is then your choice to come in or not.0 -

Correct, she could have left. Smoking was allowed at the time. So she made a choice to come into a place that allows smoking ans then she *****ed that people were smoking. Yea, that makes sense.0 -

I can agree there.
I personally think it should be their choice, and they should understand that they will lose business if they allow smoking.
I wouldn't take my kids to an establishment that allows smoking, and hope that most parents would say the same.
I for one was very happy to see cigarettes removed from bars. I was working hard on killing my liver on a regular basis, and I had all of these *kitten* messing with my sinuses.0 -
to each their own, I don't smoke and do not care if others want to smoke... Now if they smoke in my house, in my car, or blow smoke in my direction I have a problem with that....0

I smoke and I think that restraunts and especially bars should be allowed to choose whether or not to allow smoking. And going to the American Cancer Society for info on Second hand smoking is like going to R.J. Renolds for information on second hand smoking. IT'S BIASED!!! DO your own research looking up American Journal of Medicine and you'll see that 20 min-60 min of second hand smoking doesn't effect you except while you're in the smoke. 15min after you leave the smoke your body is back to normal. What I'm sick of it going to casino's where smoking is alllowed everywhere, that have nonsmoking sectioning, and getting dirty looks, or over exagerated coughing when I light up. When I'm in the casino non-smokers are in the minority and they can't stand it. Anymore that's were I prefer to go, great food, good drinks, and I can have a couple of cigarettes freely. But if i see a nonsmoker I usually ask if it's okay for me to smoke. It they say they prefer I not i use an E-cig that glos blue at the tip and lets out water vapor. I try to be considerate but sometimes when I'm in a smoking establishment I just don't care because the non-smokers choose to come come here knowing that there is a chance that evreyone will be smoking.
You took away our bars, where children shouldn't be, and the majority of people smoked, you took away the owner's choice of small restraunts and bars. This isn't a dictatorship but it's begining to feel like one. How many people die from getting hit by drunk drivers? Maybe focus more on the that instead of the 'nuisance' of tobacco smoke.0 -

But again, that was a choice you made right? You chose to go to the bar which allows smoking. Obviously the smoke doesnt bother you that much, or you would have chosen to not go.0 -
I have asthma and smoking irritates it, so i am glad smoking is banned in public places. and i think smoking is a serious addiction. One of my good friends is a teacher and she always talks about parents who never have lunch or field trip money but always have a cigarette in their hands.0

But it came down to the choice of "tolerate someone elses drug addiction or go home".
there weren't non smoking bars. And most of the restaurants closed the dining area after 10 so you were stuck in the smoking section of a bar.....
I get what you're saying, but I don't think people should have to make choices based on someone elses irrational habit..... If I wanted to get wings at 11 pm, I shouldn't have to risk my health.0 -

The casinos getting ready to open here in Ohio are going to realize that a lot of their customers are still going to drive to Indiana to do their gambling because they can smoke there. From where I live Columbus is about an hour away, Cincinnati is about an hour away. Lawrenceburg Indiana is about and hour and twenty minutes. If I was a smoker I would rive the extra twenty minutes.0 -

You're a believer in freedoms. You should be able to see your fallacy with this argument. She may not have been the only person there that didn't enjoy your cigarette. Other's there may also have been there inhaling the second hand smoke. She just happened to be the person to say something. All though she demanded it instead of asking. In turn, you responded with an equally rude comment and implied that you demanded her money.
I'm all for personal freedoms, but there's no reason to be a total jerk about it. Do what you want to do, if you're going to continue to talk about personal freedoms about how you would do this or that or not be controlled, at least have the decency to realize that other people have personal freedoms as well that may not coincide with your beliefs. If you realized that, you'd not be so adamant about convincing us of a point you're trying to make in your defensive replies.0 -

I just dont understand that mentality. I dont understand the thought that you should be able to dictate what a business owners allows in their place of business. If I dont like the way a place does business, I just dont go there. I dont expect them to cater to me. We all make choices. I am a non smoker. If I want wings, I have a choice to make. Do i want the wings bad enough to tolerate some smoke. If yes, I go in, if no I dont go in. But I in no way think I should tell a business owner to change their rules because I dont like it.0 -

Yes she had the freedom to leave. She choose to be at a place that allows smoking. If you dont like smoke dont go to a place where people smoke. Nobody was forcing her to be there. That was her choice.0 -
It doesn't usually bother me. I'm only ever annoyed when I'm sitting in a non smoking area, and a smoker comes and sits beside me and lights up. But those kinds of instances are just created by disrespectful people, and don't necessarily reflect the behaviour of everyone who smokes to me.
I know plenty of respectful and non-selfish smokers as I do selfish and disrespectful smokers.0 -
The real question is why is smoking still legal at all. It has been proven to kill. But then again McDonalds is still here and their food will kill you. lol
I am a former smoker.0 -
I am an ex-smoker. Here is my take...Business - should be owners choice (my choice to give them my business or not). Homes - Home owners choice (simple). Public services - where I cant get away from you no matter what ie: subway, bus, elevator etc. Should remain not allowed. Parks etc - Should be allowed because its outside and I dont have to stand near you but people should use ash trays and not throw the stubs on the floor. (same goes for non-smoking litter bugs)
Happy Thursday all0 -

See?
They'll make smoking illegal and then junk food illegal then bad words illegal...
Won't it be such a fun world when you all get your way?0 -

Actually, it might not. It's kind of a game of moderation with everything in life. It's possible you could submit yourself to non-toxic levels of a toxic substance and be able to survive.0 -

The whole "if you don't like it don't go" isn't the way to keep people safe.
Should we do away with health inspections? It's simple, if you get food poisoning once from a restaurant just don't go there. The government shouldn't be concerned with the safety of the patrons that go to restaurants, right?
If I don't like the music a bar plays, don't like the employees or don't like the food, then yes, it's simple, I just don't go.
But when I like the food, but I have to put my health at risk to go there, we cross a line where something should be done.
We're not taking away your rights. We're just not granting you the ability to make other people sick. if you want to smoke, wait till you get home or go outside. If you can't wait, you need to consider the fact that you're a drug addict and need to quit.........0 -
I quit smoking last year.
I commute to london every day, and have to be honest, I rarely even notice anyone smoking, near the station, around the station, on the streets, around the office entrances.
So given how some people feel smokers today impact them, when I barely notice them, on the streets ect, I have to be honest, sounds more like they are a persecuted minority.
It's right that smoking should be banned in enclosed public spaces, the legislation is to protect the employee's and staff, not the other patrons, after all why should someone have to change career/job in order to not breath in cigerette smoke.0 -
It's all BS and everyhting is about money in the end. If it's natural it shouldn't be banned.0
-
See?

There's a clear difference.
"Junk food" won't kill you, and it's a broad term that has multiple meanings depending on who you ask. Bad words don't kill you.
Smoking and second hand smoke do...........0 -
What about all the people that drive drunk and kill innocent people that are just driving home? Why don't people focus on that? It costs a lot more to care for a coma victim and put a drunk in jail and care for him for 25-life, than to for insuarnce to pay 50% of an inhaler. I've never smoked a pack and felt like I was "too buzzed" to drive. So I kill myself smoking, I don't smoking arounf children, I ask people if they mind if I smoke so the only person I'm hurting is myself. So everyone can get off my back! Alcohol costs more, hurts more innocent people, and is what people should be really concentrating on, but most people like to drink so no one will ever think about get rid of, or putting a cap on how many drinks you can have. And If I can't smoke in a restraunt then there should be a sound proof area for people that come in with children, and a seperate area for those over 18.0

Smoking in public should be banned?! So what, I'm supposed to never leave my house?
Personally, I smoke away from buildings, people and most definitely children. If I'm standing somewhere smoking, then guess what? You can go and stand somewhere else. I try my best to be considerate to other people when I smoke.
And that doesn't come down to me being a smoker, it's me being a considerate person. People that smoke around kids, pregnant women or people that have asked them not to are just being inconsiderate. Let's not tarnish all smokers with the same brush.0 -
. But I in no way think I should tell a business owner to change their rules because I dont like it.
Just as an aside, when the ban was brought in in the UK some businesses said the same as you "let the public decide whether or not to enter a smoking establishment". The decision was made that the staff need to be protected too, so the ban covers all bars and restaurants.
And, now we're back to whether or not 2nd hand smoke is harmful... I'm getting dizzy...0 -
Here is my thought- Why , me being a non-smoker, should I have to leave a public place because of YOUR habit? Why should I have to make a concession to you and your nicotine addiction?
Me getting a tattoo does not impact your quality of life, or the air your breathe- the same with getting a piercing. If what I personally decide to do only effects ME and not those around me, then I could understand being upset about laws banning it.
However, when you smoke it doesn't only effect YOU it effects everyone around you. Whether it be on the sidewalk, in a restaurant/bar, in a park, etc. The same way there are laws about drinking and driving- sure its a persons individual choice to go out to a bar and drink, but there decision to drive while impaired impacts those around them.
The job of laws and lawmakers is to make sure that people feel safe. Despite what YOU feel about second hand smoke and the studies that have been done that show it can lead to things like cancer, laws take into consideration the health and well being of EVERYONE.
If you want to smoke, by all means, go ahead and do it- but why should I have to inhale your second hand smoke and ruin my lungs because of your choices- doesn't seem quite fair.0 -
I am a former smoker.
Should smokers have rights? Yes. Do we tax the crap out of people who smoke? Yes. But don't we tax the crap out of everything anyways? haha.
I believe that smoking should be banned in public places (i.e. where food is served). I don't want to smell smoke when I eat and have my clothes stink like cigarettes.
Other than that go ahead and smoke away.0 -
I just read a study that claimed if you breathe clean air for any amount of time, you will eventually die.0
