I'm not sure I get what the freak-out is about. I mean, that's why real meat-based soups will turn into jelly when refrigerated. Because boiling the meat causes the gelatin in the cartilage to dissolve into the liquid.
By the way, the gelatin in pop-tarts is used in the frosting, not in the filling. Which is why the mini pop-tart stick things are certified kosher but the full-sized ones aren't.
You forgot to include fish bones in your list of gelatin sources, by the way.
This really isn't a secret. Where did you think Jell-o comes from? People have been doing this for centuries. I think most cultures have used some form of aspic as a delicacy. Also, did you mention marshmallows? If not, add them to your list.0 -
Love me some Pop-Tarts!0
-
hahaha this is in sooo many products. I mean they do use all sorts of parts in everything. pork, cattle, chicken, ect.
If it bothers you theres lots of stuff ur gonna cut out. but mostly you eat things like this multiple times a day and don't even realize0 -
Jello and pop-tarts are both awesome. True story.0

I gotta pull a "bug-atheist" viewpoint here. If I can't see the bug, it doesn't exist. :laugh:0

Personally, I don't eat Pop Tarts because there's no nutritional value to them.0

Personally, I don't eat Pop Tarts because there's no nutritional value to them.
10% of RDA for Vitamin A, C, iron and some of the B vitamins.

There is some nutritional value but obviously these would not be considered a micronutrient dense food.0 -
Oh and if that didn't make you squirm at all, look for the ingredient "Carmine" or natural red 4 used in food products and natural makes ups....its made from insects.
Yup that lipstick might be from boiled bugs, kind of cool huh?
I would rather the color in my foods ce from ground up insects than petroleum based colors!0 -

In entire Europe, the biggest traditional Christmas dish is cooking up those meat parts with vegetables and then turning it from what looks like a hot meat soup into aspic.
When it is completely jelloey, eat with spoon or fork or as you like it.
There is nothing disgusting about it, it is a million year old tradition. I would worry about the sugar in pop tarts instead...0 -
I avoid Pop Tarts because, although the frosting is good, they are so damn salty that I need like 5 gallons of water after eating one !!0

Mmm..pop tarts0

I don't eat pop tarts because I don't eat anything breaded, but I eat a lot of pork rinds so pop tarts don't really gross me out, heh.0

Hey look another reason to go vegetarian LOL I've been a vegetarian for over 5 years but I just found out about gelatin a few years ago. It's really disgusting and wrong isn't it?!?!
No it isn't. It's tasty and natural, and nothing goes to waste! Three good reasons not to go vegetarian!
^^This^^ Plus how 'bout that dudes gigantically long post about vegetarianism and all the schmackle he must have had to go through to research all that jazz.... who has that kind of time? **sits at table, lifts fork and jabs into delicious grilled chicken breast**0 -
Just replying to the original post... I'm not understanding why "gelatin" is fine but "pork-gotten gelatin" is all horrible... I mean, how does this really make a difference compared to "cow-gotten gelatin"? Unless you're normally using a veggie based substitute it always comes from bones, hooves, hides, noses, etc. Why would it be grosser from one animal than another that people eat?0

Everyone know pop tarts are crappy junk food, but I learned something today that will encourage me to never eat another poptart should I encounter one. I knew jello was made from nasty stuff. Come to find out its a lot more then jello.
The back story: I'm from Iowa originally, and Iowa is known for two things, hogs and corn. Where there is hogs there is meat processing plants. My best friend just began working for one of these pig processing plant and he told me about something.
Companies go to every extent to use every part of the pig. This is where pop-tarts come in, the filling in pop-tarts contains gelatin, not so scary right? What if i told you that was pork gelatin? Yummy your pop-tart filling is made with gelatin that is derived from the hide of a pig. Yum. Other things that gelatin comes from skin, boiled crushed horn, hoof and bones, connective tissues, organs and some intestines of animals such as domesticated cattle, chicken, horses hooves, and pigs.
Products gelatin is use in?
Gelatin desserts, (like jello) trifles, aspic, marshmallows, and confectioneries such as Peeps and gummy bears. Gelatin may be used as a stabilizer, thickener, or texturizer in foods such as ice cream, jams, yogurt, cream cheese, and margarine; it is used, as well, in fat-reduced foods to simulate the mouthfeel of fat and to create volume without adding calories
Bits and pieces of what I wrote came from a web search, and were not written by me.
Who knew I could get pork while eating a pop tart?
Marshmallows, peeps AND gummy bears?!?!?! NOOOOOOOOO! Adding that to the list of things to check for in the ingredients list. I feel like I always knew, but didn't want to actually remember while eating them0 -
Guess what I'm eating right now??
A Pop Tart!!
Mmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!0 -
bacon poptarts? Now we're on to something!!
THIS WOULD BE MOUTHGASMIC!!!!!!!0 -
Doesn't bother me- I eat meat and I prefer if companies DO USE as much as the animal instead of just certain parts and throwing the rest out. I'd rather have an animal product than some chemical "gel".
Ditto.0 -
Wait until the OP finds out where silk really comes from!
pooor worms having stuff pulled out of their bottoms
Good grief. I have to learn not to read posts right after getting out of bed. I thought you meant Silk, the soy milk.
I did too! *sigh of relief* lol0 -
