Well models should also represent health while they're at it. Nothing wrong with fantasy models, just not enough average ones out there. Everywhere you turn you see size 0 models. No wonder girls who are Kate's size think they're fat..

Models are not making a public service announcement. They are selling ****.

You seem to have a rather shocking lack of understanding of how the media influences individuals. Wow. Just oh wow!

The media influences individuals who can't wrap their heads around that fact that it's a fantasy. That's my whole point. Let the fantasy be the fantasy that it is. Don't conflate it with reality and get all bent out of shape because the two don't measure up. They aren't supposed to. That's why it sells. You're the one who doesn't seem to understand.

maybe YOU dont understand that not everyone's fantasy is what YOU think it is.

She's not fat, but I do find her weight average and that's not good enough for a model.

We need more average models. These really thin, airbrushed ones we have are the reason why so many girls have eating disorders.

What do we need average models for? We have average people everywhere. Models are supposed to represent a FANTASY. We can't handle the fact that we aren't perfect so we have to make art that's mediocre? C'mon.

    Porn is about fantasy.

Models are part of the advertising industry. There's an artistic component, but it should be based in reality, not fantasy.

Fashion models are, or rather should be, about how a certain product will look on the customer. I don't want a mascara ad that shows me fantasy lashes. I want to see that actual product on an actual woman. I don't want to see clothes on someone who's 5 inches taller and 20 pounds lighter than the average woman, I want to see it on someone like me.

    Right on. :drinker:

I totally agree. We need more average models like we need more average intelligence doctors and physicists. All those smarty pants types giving people of average intelligence low self esteem. It's just not fair.

Your sarcasm is assuming these models are healthy...That isn't always the case.

Yea. All those unhealthy doctors out there with their ridiculously long hours providing poor role models for our children . . .

WTF is it with some women and models? No one is forcing anyone to emulate them. If you have low self esteem then look at your parents, not models. You don't know them. They don't live with you. Get over it. My kids' self esteem is my responsibility as a parent, not some athlete, model, or anyone else for that matter.

Fashion models are NOT meant to be a fantasy. They are meant to present the clothing in an appealing way to the public. The reason that models are generally thin is because they are displaying the "demo version" of the clothing. Designers want to spend as little as possible on the demo as a means to keep costs low. So the "demo version" of the clothing is made in the smallest size possible. For the most part, this cost is minimal, but since employing this practice, society has embraced this rail-thin model as some ideal for beauty and have put this ideal on a pedestal.

Pinup models are meant to be a fantasy and generally carry a larger percentage of body fat than a fashion model.

To each their own. If you feel like the fashion model ideal is right for you, then I wish you luck at it. But that doesn't mean the models with a higher percentage of body fat are lazy or are not beautiful or ideal. Your opinions border dangerously on the line of body-shaming and I think you should reevaluate your opinions because you sound ignorant.

She isnt fat but she isnt fit either.

    Could do with some weightlifting.
I don't get what the hype is with her, but whatever. She is a model so she will be judged by a lot of people. Most people like her because of her "assets".

I don't think she's fat but I don't think she's fit either. That's fine for her and her fans but not what I want. I have seen pictures that she looked okay in, I don't like the ones posted on this thread. IDK I've never understood her popularity. BUT I totally agree it's great to see different size models.. I think it's great she's going to the gym now. I think if she adds some muscle and keeps her boobs, she'll go from hot to hot dam! :)

ETA - I do agree it's not right to call her fat, perhaps big for a model, soft?, but not fat.

You're right. I'm not the one spending millions doing market research to exploit you with advertising. Obviously, thin models don't sell products... and have not become the staple fantasy of our culture. I didn't say it was MY fantasy. I said it was A fantasy.

Fatter models just sell a different fantasy... that we are all perfect and beautiful just the way we are. Well, isn't that warm and fuzzy.

I think its up to us, as parents to teach our daughters what healthy looks like. Not the fashion industry. My daughter is aware that a size 0 doesn't always mean unhealthy. Neither does a size 12. I prefer to be my daughters role model.

That's fantastic. Not every girl has that luxury.

I wasn't referring to looks alone. I was referring to making a healthy lifestyle change. My lifestyle change wasn't just for myself. I will lead by example for my kids, to show them healthy happy way of living.

I think she's a bigger model who can look a little chunky in comparision to other models.

    Modeling is art now?

News flash-- most models aren't meant to be healthy or attractive, they're meant to be clothes hangers in pretty much every sense.

Models are not art. Photography and fashion design are art. Models bodies are props that are used in a careful composition. Deal with it. If I'm trying to create a specific image, I'm not going to sacrifice that image by using a model that doesn't fit just because I don't want to hurt someone's feelings. Peoples' feelings are irrelevant in aesthetics. If Kate Upton is useful as a model it's because some fraction of the population is comforted by seeing the image of a fatter woman. That's fine. It's also pandering.

Ten minutes ago I did not know who Kate Upton was. Now I do. The issue (if there is one) is not about people being pandered to, or comforted. The girl is freakin' gorgeous. She's hot. Men (and women) find her incredibly sexually attractive. She looks healthy. She looks fertile. That's what we are programmed to see as attractive.

Most men and women do not find catwalk models sexually attractive, because they usually have no sexual features. They are clothes hangers, and they do a job. But it is not being attractive. I'd rather look like Kate Upton than all the catwalk models I have seen who look like they would fall over in a breeze. This is not pandering because I am overweight. It's because I want to look strong and healthy.

Can I just add that intelligence can be quantified while beauty is subjective, and therefore, the analogy of models to doctors is apples to oranges.

Kate Upton is a gorgeous woman with an enviable body. Yep she is a different look than what we are used to seeing on the runway . Very low body fat, seems to be the aesthetic. Terms like fat, skinny, curvy, fit, skinny fat all get tossed around with no seemingly consistency. Best to ignore all the noise.

Excuse me? WHAT is good enough to be a model? It's this kind of attitude that causes us as a society to be so self-consumed.
