Friday fitness - No idea, it's TOM so I think I'll probably spend a good portion of the weekend asleep.
I'm feeling pretty annoyed and frustrated right now. Dr. McHottyPants is freaking out about my latest blood test. My creatinine levels are still wacked out so he wants me to see a kidney specialist. I run out of health insurance in about a month and a half (when I get laid off) so whatever he wants done has to be fixed by then.
I lost the weight on a high protein low carb diet. Carbs are seriously my personal enemy. When I eat them (processed carbs that is) I want MORE, I CRAVE MORE. The high protein keeps me full, satisfied, and lets me drop weight like crazy. Of course now I am off the protein (because of the kidney issues). It's like they keep adding things that I can't eat. Pretty soon the only thing left will be tree bark... wait, that probably has carbs. Maybe dirt... unless it has too much sodium in it.
Can't have carbs, it spinkes my BS... can't have sodium it taxes my kidneys/stresses my BP, can't have protein because it stresses my kidneys, can't have fat because it gave me high cholesterol. WTF is left?! There's just no way I can live on straight salad, my digestive system seriously objects if I eat salad more than 3 or 4 times a week.
Feeling *VERY* frustrated and defeated now. I'm not even thinking about the weight loss, just basic health... I can't seem to find anything that's healthy(and certainly nothing that isn't healthy) for me that I can eat without it messing up SOME part of my health issues.0 -

@KarenLeona - hope you were able to travel to see your new grandbaby and that your recovery is progressing well too, so you can bike to your heart's content.

@Tom - yes, even with our very different-than-planned hiking trip, fitbit recorded 33,931 steps and 121 floors for the two-day trip. Whew! No wonder my muscles were stiff. :laugh: Imagine if we had stayed out for the full four days? I hope you will have (or are having - can't remember when you leave) a gloriously wonderful trip to the national parks. Arches is absolutely one of my favorites! I know your fitbit steps will rise on such a trip, so I better start taking the dogs out for long daily walks again, if I want to stay ahead (turns out I'm much more competitive than I thought I was :noway: ).
@Laurie - you are most definitely an athlete! Have you ever considered starting a Rock Climbing Meet Up Group? I bet people would come to that and it might be a good way to make some friends with similar interests. In our area, there is also a Triathlon Training Meet Up group, which could be good for you too.... they meet for a swim and run or a bike and run or a mini-tri and other such stuff...
@Susan - I thought the same thing about Disney Cruises and all the kids (especially since I don't even have kids) but I've been on two now with my brother's family and it's not like that at all. The boat is big, the kids have plenty of activities to keep them busy and many chances to make friends, and there are several adults-only venues to retreat to (after you drop Cyrus at his club). I think you would be surprised how much you might enjoy it. Either way, glad the business travel is coming to a close (for now) and you will get to spend some time away with your boy.
@Robin - love the new profile picture and so glad you ran with the last-minute invitation and had a fun night with friends! Everyone needs/deserves that once in a while!!!! :drinker:
@Suzee - I love my fitbit! IMHO, definitely worth the money as it's a constant motivator!
@Tammy - so great that you're getting so much done and enjoying the time with your hubby. I think it's a terrific plan to try to maintain for the month that he's home and focus on losing again when he's back at work.
@Karen - yup, our trip went nothing like we planned, but the wilderness has a mind of its own. I've always liked this quote from one of my favorite authors, which seems appropriate to the situation: “Once a journey is designed, equipped, and put in process, a new factor enters and takes over. A trip, a safari, an exploration, is an entity, different from all other journeys. It has personality, temperament, individuality, uniqueness. A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. MyMOwMOw - It is a challenge when you have various health issues to learn what you can and can't eat. But MFP is a great place to learn. By logging your food and making notes about how you feel each day you will be able to find what works for you. It was a long road for me, with allergies and IC. It was a trial and error process but it paid off.
Thursday Truth: I would happily be a hermit, if people would just leave me alone. (I say this after a rotten night sleep interupted by neighbors climbing on our roof at midnight, drunk:drinker: and locked out of their condo.:grumble: )

Ok, I stopped feeling sorry for myself and did some research. I've reset my goals to account for the changes in protein level. I've got a game plan and have prelogged my meals through next Monday. I'll have to use up what I bought Wednesday on my main shopping trip 'cause I just can't afford to replace everything.... but I'll swing by the grocery store tonight and pick up the few things that I"ll be missing. I'll do more research this weekend and clean out my freezer/fridge to get rid of the stuff that isn't condusive to the new macros so on Tuesday when I go shopping again I'll be prepared. I'll also sit down this weekend and prelog the entire week so I know what and when I'm eating.
Kaye - SO glad to hear your home and doing well. I'm sure that little weight that's left is just water retention after the surgery. I have NO doubt you'll get rid of it in NO time.
MacBeth - I've been stalking your dad's journey so I heard about your 'mishaps'. Your adventures always so sound much fun to me (even the less than perfect ones).
Laurie - I agree with Beth, imo you ARE an athlete... trainers, rock climbing, etc. Sounds like an athlete to me!
Susan (and others) - I've been on *TONS* of cruises. My ex husband and I used to love cruising (as does the rest of my family). We always went Royal Carribean. It's jsut where we started and we became loyal customers.

@kris--good for you for taking control. I can't claim to know how you feel, but could only imagine if I had to cut protein levels. Like you, I am much less hungry when I cut the processed carbs and up my protein levels. One thing I have found is that complex carbs like quinoa and soba noodles don't make me as hungry as regular pasta or white rice. I also try to replace regular bread with multi-grain sandwich thins or low carb tortillas. I don't know if any of that helps you--just trying to throw out some ideas. :flowerforyou:

@beth--Love the Steinbeck quote. I agree that I hope my trip doesn't have as many twists and turns as your hike, but I AM prepared for the possibility that things may not go as planned. I'm still not 100% sure I'll see the Tour de France--the online route could be a big fat lie, or even if it goes through Albertville, we could still run into trouble getting to the route. As I told my friend I'm traveling with--even if I don't see the TDF for some reason, it's still going to be a great trip--and that's true of just about any of the plans we made. If some aspect falls through, oh well--I'll still be in Switzerland!! :bigsmile:

Mackbeth- I always thought I might want to do a hike but after reading about yours I don't think so. I think I will stick to reading about it how do you follow someone on a trail while they are hiking?
Kris-- sorry you are having so much trouble. Do you have a diagnosis with your kidneys?

@Suzee -- Don't let my one mis-adventure dissuade you from hiking! I've had many good trips too... but, yes, it's always a bit of a crapshoot when you head out into the woods. Many thru-hikers keep a journal of their travels and one of the most popular sites for that is trailjournals.com -- you can follow people on almost any trail. In past years, I've looked at a few until I find one I really like, and then followed that person. This year is all about my dad. I follow his -- http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?trailname=14408 -- plus a few other hikers who are near him on the trail. Dad's got tons of people from my hometown of Toledo following him and always wants to keep the journal updated, but unfortunately he's out of internet range much of the time and when he's not, he's usually too tired or focused on other things to post. I have to bug him to put in an entry every once in a while. For the day-to-day stuff, he's given the responsibility to me... I put where he started and stopped and what he passed along the way, but since I'm not there it's devoid of the details and emotions. You might do better to follow someone else. :laugh: Dad carries a GPS/SOS device (Delorme) that he can use to call out a Search and Rescue if something goes horribly wrong, which he also uses to send electronic "breadcrumbs" so we can follow him on the trail, even when he's out of range. It's pretty cool.
@Kelley -- I almost forgot to say HOLY CRAP AND EE GHADS!!!! There are fish in that-there water?! That changes everything!! :laugh: Yup, and snakes and snapping turtles, too, from what I've been told. Yikes. Hope I never encounter one of those-there critters. You were absolutely BRILLIANT to lose weight BEFORE your Alaska trip. Why didn't I think of that?! Zoinks. I'm sure you will look great on your Panama Canal cruise next year and when you're snorkeling in Cayman at least you'll have flippers so they can't nibble your toes! :bigsmile:

Reading through your posts...Many of you are not exercise buffs but do well on the food choices! THAT'S OK! My friend lost 90 pounds watching calories with only an occasional walk here and there, so IT CAN BE DONE! I, myself, am TERRIBLE with food choices but better with the exercise. Last summer when I started MFP, I lost 22 pounds by logging foods and being an exercise maniac. Unfortunately, my life got in the way, and I've gained back some...well, most! Anyway, trying not to beat myself up and just get back at it!
My little Luna is at the vet today. They didn't have an appointment slot open, so I had to drop her off so they can check her in between appointments. I miss her! :sad:

Kaye, I'm glad you are home now. Keep up the exercises, but listen to your body so you won't overdo! I've had both knees replaced, so I know how that goes. I had bunion surgery in March and will probably have the other foot done in December (bunion and hammer toe). I figure if I get it done before the end of the year, I won't have to pay anything out-of-pocket. That should be the end of surgeries for me!
MowMow, you make me laugh with your post, though I know the health issues are not a laughing matter. Mr. Hottypants needs to supply you with a great crock pot recipe for tree bark and dirt!

Beth- I will need to look into a triathlon meet up group, I am finding a few people in the meet up group that I belong to are interested in doing a sprint triathlon. Several of us will be meeting up on Sunday to go bike riding around BWI airport about 11 miles. The rock climbing group would be interesting but I am not an outdoor climber yet, that is a new skill for me to learn. It requires learning how to lead climb basically increasing your chances of falling a larger distance because you need to hook the rope into the next carabineer before you move higher. I watch those people doing at the gym and I am thinking no way. Right now I am happy to stick with Top Roping- where you are tied into a harness and you will not fall as far. Where is your Dad now on the trail?
Kris- I hope you can figure out the diet restrictions. Whole grains and veggies have been helping me to feel fuller since my trainer told me to reduce the amount of protein I was eating.

Thursday truth- I spent yesterday at a party and had a wonderful time. I ate way to much junk food and did not get in any exercise. So today, I started to make up for it by going to the gym this morning for a light workout just walking and some biking then tonight I went climbing.

machbeth - well, like I called it, its the "Wildernuts" you can't plan for the weather! It still sounds like a grand adventure! I love the quote too. I did a canoe trip in my youth and it was just short on "Deliverance" without the "violation scene" but it was crazy fun.

CathEsh - thanks for the reminder to all the readers lurking that it is not essential to be a jock to lose weight. We can do it simply by eating less calories !!! If we have physical limitations and cannot be very active we can still lose the weight!YAY!!
Laurie - your Meet-Up groups sound fun. Could you explore starting a Vacation one? Another idea I had for your vacation was perhaps you could visit a distant relative - I know sometimes that doesn't sound like a real vacation especially if they are an older aunt or something - but they usually are very excited to have company and provide a very good base of operations for a visit. I've had great success doing that and have gotten to know relatives much better this way.

Hi all, back and trying to get on track. Made a lovely almond milk, fruit and protein shake for breakfast this morning. I'm trying to plan more meals as this helps. My little 2 yr. old grandson is coming for dinner tonight and making baked salmon (he likes it too) and rice and veggies. I really want to keep up my motivation. Love reading everyone posts, very motivating.0

@Laurie - dad has hiked @630 trail miles and is taking a day off at Vermilion Valley Resort in the High Sierra, about 60 miles south of Yosemite. Hope to hear from him today. He had to skip @250 trail miles earlier in his trek (@60 miles were closed for the Powerhouse Fire, and he jumped a bit farther ahead to try to meet up with a friend). So, when he gets to Canada, he'll go back and do those miles in Southern California, to get credit for an official "thru-hike."
Today, I need to get stuff done!!!! Too tempting to spend hot summer days lounging or swimming and let everything else go to pot. I will mow the lawn, clean the bathroom, deal with some paperwork, and clean up the kitchen. Plus meet a friend and go for a swim. Might take the dogs out for a proper walk if it cools down enough this evening, but right now, they're not interested in moving at all.0 -
I totally forgot to share a wonderful positive during my business trip last week. When I graduated from college YEARS ago, I spent 6 years as a nanny. My very first job was a live-in with first time parents and a 6-month old little boy, Alex. We lived in Connecticut outside of Stamford. It was lovely. Well, I've stayed in touch with the family who now lives in Exton, PA, which is outside of Philly. I was able to have dinner with them and spent the night at their house.
Well, Alex graduated last year from Virginia. He spent the past 9 months living in a small village outside of Spain teaching English to children. On July 9th, he's leaving from San Francisco and biking across the U.S. landing in Baltimore. I'm so proud of him and to see the man he has become. His mom's a nervous wreck as he's biking by himself, but when he sets a goal he's so determined. I need to learn from him now.0 -

@mel--salmon has to be my all-time favorite fish, but my DH doesn't really love it. He'll eat a piece once in a while, but I try not to cook it too often, since I know it's not his favorite.
@robin--sorry to hear about your knee--just focus on your upper body routine until it's feeling better. I also love your new pic!
@laurie--I spent yesterday eating and drinking way too many calories, so I can commiserate with you. :ohwell: Today is a new day! I've realized I need to get more healthy dishes in the fridge. It was way too easy to eat a left over brat for breakfast today. If I had something better already prepared, no doubt I would have chosen it. I just didn't feel like making anything. I think I'm going to make some quinoa salad tonight--that will be a great healthy option for when I'm feeling lazy about cooking. Have you done any research into vacatrion spots? When are you planning to travel?
@cath--yes, one thing I've learned through this process is that losing weight really is 80% food and 20% exercise. I don't think I really believed that before, but I've seen first-hand that it's true. Unfortunately, like you, I'm much better at the exercise part and if I'm not eating healthy, I tend to just maintain. :ohwell:
@suzee--wouldn't that be wonderful!! If you could give me some of your food discipline, I would gladly share my love of exercising.
Saturday Success:
I guess one success is that even though I was just talking about how I make terrible food choices, I'm still better than before MFP. For example, yesterday a friend and I went out for drinks in the afternoon. As the afternoon went on, we decide to eat at one of the bars, so I ordered the chicken wrap. I got it without the cheddar cheese and had them put the honey mustard on the side. In the past, I would have just left the cheese on the wrap--I don't hate it, but I'm not a big fan of cheddar so why eat the extra calories? I also wouldn't have gotten the sauce on the side. Now mind you, I used every last drop of the honey mustard on the wrap, but at least I could see how much I was eating. So even though I drank a bunch of calories I probably didn't need, at least I make slightly better choices when eating out.
Setting up my exercise plan for the week. Wed. and Fri. I'm babysitting my niece all day so I probably won't have time for more than a quick walk with gunner. However, my 18 month old niece LOVES to dance, so I'm hoping to burn a few calories having a dance party with her. Also, if the weather is nice, I may take her to the park right next to their home and get some exercise playing outside.

Every few days lately, I have to go out and add another row of twine to the trellis, the peas are going NUTS, as are the tomatoes... I actually had to prune several plants so they wouldn't be too cramped inside their cages. My herbs have been allowed to get rather overgrown and I've been out there daily for the past week pinching off flower heads and giving one type after another a serious haircut.
It's that sort of hot out today where the humidity and overcast light are such that you don't notice you're warm until you're suddenly dripping sweat.0 -

Hi all, like some other folks I'm wandering back in after an absence. I don't recall any longer, but I think it was May when I was here last. And I was talking about getting yelled at by my trainer for not committing to healthy eating (he's right), with a trip coming up.
Welllll.... the trip went great. The eating didn't, but the trip did. Even with the broken arm.
Yes, I broke my left arm. Doing jump-spins on roller skates. (At the roller rink during a class, even!) Landed it several times, then my foot came out from under me and I caught myself on my left hand. So I got a nice compression fracture and a cast, which I took to California with me. Six weeks later the cast came off, and I'm now doing hand/wrist OT exercises to get my range of motion back. In the meantime, the trainer has had me doing lower body/ab stuff, which came in handy when I went for a 2-hour horseback ride last weekend. Trotting on a VERY large horse would have been much tougher without all the squats.
I've also changed my approach. I attended a seminar at the conference in California by a specialist in cognitive-behavior therapy. She and her daughter (also a therapist) run a weight-loss program based in CBT principles. Got me researching on Amazon, and I found their book (The Beck Diet Solution by Judith Beck), plus another book by a different person with the same last name, who doesn't appear to be related. I'm reading the latter one -- it's called The Four-Day Win, by Martha Beck -- and not only is it incredibly funny, it's focused on the problem I'm really having. The one where the rational brain wants to eat less to lose weight and be healthier and the emotional brain says, "Uh, NO. I'd like an iced venti white chocolate mocha, please. Now." And because the emotional brain always wins in the long run, here I am having put back 30 lbs of the 60 I'd lost last year.
So I decided to put the weight loss efforts on pause, because I am really just not mentally on my game at the moment, and go through the exercises. My first 4-Day Win was logging onto MFP daily again, since I'd lost that habit on vacation. It got me logging my food again, which is good. The most recent 4-Day Win was to make note of when I find myself in Famine Brain and I want to eat ALL THE FOODS RIGHT NOW, but mostly chocolate. Usually, it happens before breakfast or if I've delayed eating for some reason. Like, for example, right now. I'm hungry. Should probably get a healthy snack before I go bust through the cabinet of crap that one of my colleagues helpfully stocked in the on-call room.
Anyway, I know that the mental process not being in sync with the desire to lose is a hardship for many of us, so thought I'd pop on and share. Links to the books, if you're interested:

@ Sara - I can totally relate. I lost 60 lbs as well, but gained 30 back as well. I'm feeling the same way. I just can't figure out the mental battle of this journey. I know a big part is my lack of will power. I know I want to lose this weight for good, but it's so easy to eat the wrong things and not exercise.
With that said, I know MFP has truly helped me and the support of our friends here. In the past, I would have gained ALL 60 lbs back and then some, but I've somehow been able to hold on. Like you, I just had to step back and take a little break. I tried Advocare and the 24-Day Challenge because I have so many friends who did well with it. I liked some parts of the program, but I couldn't handle all the pills. There's just way too many. I may check out the books though just to read a different approach. Glad to see you back and take one day at a time.0 -

@susan--thanks, the mud run was great--even better than last year's! There were a lot of different obstacles which made it more challenging, but a lot more fun. My favorite were these 2 inflatables--1 was just bouncy steps up and down. The other was a huge slide. Loved them both!

Well, I decided to update my ticker by 5 lbs. I had reached a low of 181 back in March. However, that was after a bout of the flu so I don't think it was "real." I then quit smoking and quickly bounced back up to the high 180's. Since then I've been up and down, but the "low" I've seen most consistently on my scale is 186, so I decided to adjust to that. My hope is that it will motivate me to start losing again. With the ticker at 181, I would have to lose so much weight to even move my ticker. At least this way, I'll get the "reward" of adjusting my ticker even if I just lose a pound or 2.
Well, my plan to make the quinoa salad got put on hold--DH made dinner last night and one component was a big pot of brown rice. No sense in making the quinoa until some of that is out of the fridge.
I have a big exercise day planned, but I honestly don't feel like doing 30DS. Maybe I'll feel differently once I've gone to the gym. :ohwell:
