@Suzee - My doctor just referred me to a kidney specialist, haven't seen him yet for a diagnosis. The doctor suspects the issues are caused by the blood pressure meds I'm on. He's afraid to change up the cocktail because my BP is barely controlled right now and it took us a while to get this mix right to control it. Since high BP already caused one stroke we're super careful to watch my BP. He wants me to see the specialist to make sure that this damage won't be permanent. Until then though I have to treat it as if it is and keep from taxing my kidneys as much as possible. According to my last blood test they 'scored' at about stage 2 in kidney failure (out of 4) so he wants me to see the guy ASAP. I *SUSPECT* it's just the meds and he's being a bit overprotective. My Doc (Dr. McHottyPants) is a resident and I'm his first 'real' patient (that solely sees him and requests him when I make an appointment) so he's pretty protective of me. He was the DR on duty in the ER when I had my stroke and since I didn't have a DR here and I liked him, I stuck with him. The nurses in the office told me that if I don't come in every few months he starts asking if I've called and asking the babysitting DR if he should contact me.
@CathEsh - I lost my first 50 or 60 lbs without a stick of exercise. Just counting calories, @ 180lbs overweight it hurt to walk to the bathroom from the couch much less exercise. I know it's time to start and I keep HOPING I'll suddenly become addicted but... it's just not happening yet.
@Robin - I think I'm stuck eating like this until I lose enough weight to come out of some of these meds that are effecting my kidneys. I guess it's incentive to stay under calories and get my *kitten* in gear.
@Susan - I love that you got to visit the family you worked with! How wonderful to catch up!
@Kaye - you are doing great! 7 blocks is AMAZING so soon, imo! It must feel great to be home.
@MaryPoppins - I do Xstitch and crocheting as well. Same thing with knitting, I've never been able to do it..... I've made a couple of afghans but nothing as gorgeous as Kaye's and once turned into more of a house cozy it was so huge. :laugh: I use it to relieve stress and when I worked for the government I was so freaking stressed I just never stopped crocheting the blanket. It just went on and on and on and on.
@Sara- Welcome back! I'm so sorry to hear about your arm! It sounds like you've got a game plan. I have that one Beck book somewhere around here, I remember my mom giving it to me years ago.

Ok, I had one perfect food day. Granted it's only ONE, but it's a start. I'm off to a good second day. The key really is the fruits and veggies I guess. I filled my day full of fruits every few hours and my dinner had tons of veggies in it. Today I'm going to sit down and hunt up tons of vegetarian recipes that look good. I did get my food diary pre logged through next weekend and a grocery list written up.
Sunday Share since we have lots of newlings - I'm Kris, I'm a 40 year old divorcee in the Pacific Northwest. I had let my weight get up to 320lbs and convinced myself that size didn't matter and that big was beautiful. I also convinced myself that I was healthy. Until I had a stroke caused by uncontrolled blood pressure in March of 2012. I dropped 90lbs super fast and another 30 a bit slower... then I got hit with a huge crap storm called life and gained back almost 30lbs. I still have about 90 lbs to go to my goal weight and I'm hoping I'm getting back into the swing of things now!0 -
Mel - good for you - just keep on plugging away and don't ever give up for good and you'll eventually lose a lot of weight!
mackbeth - so you mean to say we have to clean our houses in the summer too? I didn't know that !

Shrink - So sorry to hear about your arm - man - I'll bet that hurt like a barn burning down! I can sympathize with your problems with impulsivity and food. I have to keep stuff out of my house or I can run the risk of gorging myself. I did learn from you to keep expensively good chocolate at hand and I'm having a few pieces at night or every other night. I hope that trick will still work for you.
meaghan - welcome. Hope you come back often. This is a great place for encouragement during your journey. Weighing once a month isn't bad at all - logging your food so you stay under your allotted calories will keep you honest and you'll definitely lose weight.
MowMow - glad you were able to eat a good meal of fruit and veggies and not feel too deprived. When is your appt. with the kidney specialist? I hope it is soon!
Well my 4th of Jully weekend continued and continued through last night and as of this morning I have officially given up Baileys as my drink of choice. I weighed this am and haven't lost anything in a week, and I blame my Baileys consumption. A higher calorie alcoholic drink probably doesn't exist! :noway: I'm going to try some of the Skinny Girl cocktails or Margarita mixes and settle of something I can enjoy for a LOT LESS calories. I went to an Art Show Opening last night with some friends and had some red wine and it was just fine. Sipping it slowly came naturally. Then afterwards we all gathered at a lake house and I hit the Baileys. It goes down way too easily. Goodbye my friend!0 -
skinnyjeansbound - I haven't logged into the virtual walk across America in a very long time. I am still walking but I felt like I was all alone doing that and didn't see the point.
RobinsEgg - thanks for the sympathy, if I had the chance to change anything in my life, I would not be living in a condo. Live and learn.
susan2396 - I was a nanny too. You are so lucky that you were able to stay in touch. I often wonder how "my boy" turned out.
Saturday Success: Annual Health assessment shows I am improved over last year. The insurance company has us fill out a form every year and have a wellness physical. It is good to have this annual informational check up. If you have Cigna see if you qualify for this, I recommend it.0 -
Completed an 18-20 mile bike ride today in the wonderful heat. I was not expecting to go this far as the original plan was only the 12 miles around the airport. Instead the group I went with changed plans last night and they started lower on the B and A trail. This was good but I could not do the whole ride. I finally caught up to the group at the 8.8 mile marker, then rode a little farther with a another members. Thank God, we stopped for yogurt on the way back about a mile from the cars. The total trip time was about 3 hours with a 30 min. break. My fingers are still tingling from the ride- another friend said that was normal just need to work on replenishing the electro-lights. I will check back in later but I am so ready for a nap and it only 6:16pm.0

@angelika--yeah, when I joined the virtual walk I joined another walker as a "teammate" but I don't really get how it's supposed to work. I guess I can look to check my progress against hers, but I don't really see the point. Instead, I just like to see my progress on the map. I finally broke through to a new state--it took over 500 miles to get through Virginia to Kentucky! SO glad your annual exam showed a health improvement--good for you! :flowerforyou:
@robin--I agree that Bailey's goes down way too easily. Fortunately for me, I only get a hankering for it around the winter holidays. I've tried some of the Skinny Girl cocktails and they are delicious. The TV trainer Jackie Warner recommends tequila w/ water as the "healthiest" cocktail, but tequila and I are NOT friends, so I can't drink that.
@kris--glad you are getting the food under control despite all of those restrictions, and my fingers are crossed that the test results show your doc is just being over-protective.
AFM--Even though I wasn't looking forward to doing 30DS, I did the last day of level 2 after the gym. I watched level 3 and it looks tough--I will try to do it a few times this week.

Hi guys! I need to do some catching up from the weekend but wanted to give a quick check in. Just got home from a weekend with the hubs and friends. It was and awesome time and like I predicted we ate horribly and drank much. But today we took the boat out and then swam for 20-30 min. This was an awesome moment for me because most of the friends weigh less than me and even the hubs tells me how hard he has to work for his job (he landscapes). Anyway today after 5 min of swimming/ treading water they all wanted./needed to use floatings because they were tired! I just kept on swimming. My husband asked me how I was doing it and I just looked back at him and said "I guess I'm just more fit than I look, baby." BAM! Now just for the fat to start melting off with this muscle that I'm putting on!

Hello everyone! I am also new to this site/app. Hoping to meet people who need to lose some weight in the extreme in a heathly way. I recently celebrated my birthday and saw the photo of myself blowing out the candles, it made me want to cry. I have always been a big woman and was fine with it. I think becoming my current age though threw a wrench into my thinking. I just started working out after a long period of laziness or embarrassment going to the gym. Wish me luck!0

Monday Check-In~Sorry I was MIA over the holiday/weekend, spent Friday with one of my closest friends – we basically just hung out, shopped a little, and drank a lot. :noway: Saturday was spent running around and working on a business plan and then Sunday was spent getting caught up on things around the house while trying to finalize business plan before its proposed tomorrow. I had an awesome workout with my trainer yesterday, we tried some new things which ended up being a calorie scorcher. So all-in-all a pretty good long weekend.
@Kris~I’m sorry for your continued health issues with your kidneys, I hope a specialist can shed some light on what’s going on without you having to make too many drastic changes.
@Karen~Love the new profile pic. Have fun with your niece this week – my sister and nephews will be here on Thursday, I’m taking the boys to the aquarium on Saturday. I can’t wait!

I thought of you when my sister sent a pic/video of my 3yo nephew rock climbing at their rec center – he’s not very adventurous but climbed half-way up the youth wall. He was so proud of himself.
@Kaye~Baby steps, 7 blocks is a great walk! I did counted cross stitch all the time when I was younger, haven’t done it in years. I know how to knit a little, but don’t do it often enough to be any good at it – my mom; however, is quite talented with it.

Monday Check in - All in all not a bad weekend. I had two whole days of being under calorie... :blushing: so it's a start...again. Yesterday afternoon I was really jonesing for sugar. I tried to fixate on something that would take *HOURS* to make, chocolate donuts like dunken donuts has (we don't have dunken donuts around here). By the time I found a recipe that looked doable and I had all the ingredients for... it was 3:30 and past my snack time. By the time I mixed up my fruit salad and ate it, it was almost time to make dinner. Donut crisis passed. :laugh: I've already started shedding the water weight I gained when I wasn't careful of my sodium content for so long. It will take my poor little kidneys about 10 days to dump it all. :ohwell: I already lost 3lbs of it this weekend.
I'm at work and armed with breakfast, lunch, and two snacks! I also cleaned all the change, debit card, and cash out of my purse as to avoid the vending machine AND the cafeteria.
I DID just realize that I still have a gift c ertificate for a chair massage here at work.... my co workers gave it to me for Christmas. The guy is only here twice a month and my last day is August 9th... I see a chair massage in my very near future!0 -

I’m getting ready for my vacation. Packing making lists buying last minute stuff. I hope to eat healthy but know a lot will be out of my control as each night the dinners are being made by a different family. Some of the families are big drinkers so I’ll have to watch out for that. I’m trying to get my road trip mind set going. We have a pretty good ride to get there. I can enjoy the drive if I have the correct attitude before we start if I do not have the correct attitude I can be a real @$$. I hope I learn how to use the camera better than I know now. We are taking a night trip on the river where they light up the canyon walls. The pictures on the website look great; I hope to get some too. Hopefully I can get some good pics of the Arches and Canyonlands at sunrise and/or sunset.
Fitbit friends- I’m going to leave the charger at home since it should make it through the time I’m gone. When I get home I’ll hopefully have all the days’ steps and sleep records. So when you see it look like I lost my fitbit do not worry. When I get back I should get all the data uploaded.

Hi everyone -- I just started, so I'm a little lost but from what I've been reading, I think this thread would be great to join. At first I was just going to do this by myself but I realize that having support from people who really understand me is important, and I don't really have that from many people around me.
A little about me: I'm an upcoming senior at the University of Rochester studying Creative Writing and Dance. I'm 5'11 & 3/4" and looking to lose about 100 lbs. Dieting is difficult for me, especially on a college campus, but I think MFP is a good way to start eating a bit healthier. I've already managed to stop myself from putting too much sugar in my chai tea. By the end of this month maybe, I should find myself not getting a chai tea latte at all!
I started MFP because I am extremely unhappy with how I look and how I feel. I'm also pre-diabetic, and I'd like to avoid actually developing diabetes. Not sure what else to say, so I'll just end here. Please add me as a friend, I could use all the support I can get!0 -

I can do those two things...absolutely. I'm not going to worry about tomorrow and I'm not going to worry about the total amount of weight I have to lose. I'm going to do well today.

First--welcome to all of the newlings!! :flowerforyou: As someone else already mentioned you've found the friendliest, most supportive group on this site. We all have different approaches to our food intake, exercise regimes, etc. depending on our personal situations. You'll never hear someone on this thread tell you what you MUST do to lose weight (other than keep trying!). You will however, hear a lot of "this is what works for me" and it will give you a lot of ideas and options to try to see what works best for you. Here's my 1st piece of advice that most here will support--drink lots of water. :drinker:
@tom (morgori)--your trip sounds like it will be incredible! I've never been to any of our National Parks out west and would love to make such a trip one of these days. Oh, and I think that quote has to be my favorite that you've posted so far. I may turn it into a poster to hang in my classroom.
@kris (mymow)--glad you are back on track with the food and getting those sodium levels back down.
@kelley (kah)--sounds like you had a nice visit with your friend. The aquarium is so much fun--I haven't taken my niece to the Shedd here in Chicago yet, but her parents already took her once. I did get to take her to see the Lincoln Park Zoo lights over my winter break. Have fun with you sister and nephews!!

The forecast is hot and humid here this week, but woke up this morning to relatively cool weather, so I decided to run outside instead of going to the gym. The air got really thick, really fast, but I managed to do 3 miles--the first half very slowly with gunner and the second half a bit faster after dropping him at the house. I then had to shower and get ready for a dentist appt. Didn't have time to do 30DS, so I will just skip it today. Tomorrow, I have to work all morning to work on curriculum writing--I'll be meeting with a bunch of teachers I haven't seen since school let out, so not sure if we will want to do something social afterwards. Either way, I should be able to start level 3 of 30DS in the afternoon.

So, I use the food tracker daily and I enter in the exercise that I do, but I'm beginning to think that the calories they tell you you burn is not accurate. It's seem like alot. Does any else use this, or am I just complete brain dazzled

TLH - I love your post today. That's what I'm trying to do right now to get back on that wagon. ONe minute at a time, 1 hour at a time, and one DAY at a time.
I've read lots of threads with people complaining how innacurate the exercise calories are on here..... I'd say the best bet if you want true counts is to get an HRM(heart rate monitor) and/or a fitbit. That will give you more accurate numbers and take out the guessing.0 -

Joandue - the amount of calories that MFP tells you to eat back is strictly your choice whether to eat back or not. I think its kind of high too. I think some other people will weigh in on this issue too. If you want to lose more weight, don't eat back your exercise calories, unless the hungry monster inside you compels you to do so.0 -
Quick check in here--Lost 3 pounds last week. So it is confirmed I have to do 1000 calories a day. At 1200 I gain so 1100 must be maintenance for me.0

@angelika--ugh! so sorry your calorie allowance is so low, but you know you have the discipline to make it work--you've done so in the past. :flowerforyou:
@joan--welcome! :flowerforyou: I agree that the calorie burns in MFP's database are merely an estimate. Having said that, I lost my first 40 lbs before ever buying a heart rate monitor. I used MFP's estimates along with this site: http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/cbc
Also, I've had little success with HRM's. My first put my burns well above MFP's numbers which greatly stalled my weight loss. My current HRM says I burn almost no calories b/c it's either a piece of crap or I'm too dumb to program it correctly, so I'm back to using estimates until I can afford a new one.:ohwell: If you are looking to purchase a HRM, I would suggest paying for a good one--my 1st was a cheaper model, and my 2nd I won in a raffle (also a cheapie brand)--I guess you get what you pay for (or don't pay for in the case of my 2nd :laugh: ). I've heard great things about Polar brand HRM's. I know a lot of folks like the Fitbit as well, but I don't think that one is a HRM--correct me if I'm wrong, guys.
As robin suggests, you'll have to do some trial and error to see how many of your exercise calories to eat back. I lost all of those first 40 lbs (going from about 240 to 200) eating back ALL of my exercise calories. I would suggest eating back all or most to start--if only to keep from getting hungry and discouraged. Then if you aren't seeing a loss, you can cut back by 100 calories for a couple of weeks to see if that helps. Everybody is different, so you'll have to see what works for your body.

Since there are so many newlings today, I'm going to make a suggestion which you can follow or not. I would invest in a food scale before worrying about making any other fitness related purchases. IMHO it is my single most important tool in learning to eat the right amounts of foods. Two+ years into this process, my $40 food scale from Target still works perfectly and I still use it everyday. :happy:0 -
Skinny- We have been to Grand Canyon, Yellowstone (in summer and winter), Grand Teton, Glacier, and Zion. I love going to them. Saw a wild grizzly bear, elk, antelope, and buffalos in Yellowstone, Bighorn sheep in Glacier, moose, deer, bald eagles, cranes and swans. The mountains are awesome. We love Jackson WY. It is a great place to stay if going to the Grand Tetons and/or Yellowstone. We were there in the winter and the National Elk Refuge is covered with elk. We started in West Yellowstone snowmobiling. We also stayed in summer which is easier driving.

How can Monday be nearly over? On the plus side the girls helped with our house chore and we got the entire house- upstairs, downstairs and the stairs vacuumed. Then it was time for the pool. 95 with a the index of 98 at 5 in the afternoon. The pool felt fabulous, hopefully the kids are tired enough that they will go to bed a little earlier tonight.
Had a NSV over the weekend. One of my pairs of jean shorts was able to go into the dryer and I could still get them on easily. No squirming or even laying down on the bed! It had been a relatively rotten day so this this was just the pick me up I needed.
Hope everyone enjoyed their holiday. I did a 10K on the 4th. Felt like I ran pretty well but was about 3 min slower than the Saturday before. Guess 4 days is too short a time between races? Still was a lot of fun and I got to wear my red, white and blue sparkle skirt!
I should be doing the dishes right now but just can't quite get the motivation to get off my rump and do it- in spite of knowing how much I love the way a clean kitchen looks! Better do it now before I am too tired.
Although I haven't been able to comment personally to each one I am so enjoying reading all the posts! And a big welcoem to the newlings!! You are going to love this group! :happy:0 -
