I am super stoked that you cared enough to take the time to write up this awesome post!

I am positive that this will put them all in their place after reading it.

Aren't you in the Village People?

Yes, but I am actually the guy in the leather chaps.

Dude, I'm pretty certain that everyone here is waiting for pics.

    *taps fingers*

I'll 2nd that. *waits for PM*

Hmm. Maybe knowledgeable posters should just stop trying to help. There appears to be a lot of resentment toward their efforts. That's sad.

Maybe you "Knowledgeable Posters" should open your Doctors Office where people can come to you for your professional educated opinion. Where did you receive your MD Degree and License to Practice?

    Where did you?

Since you ask, my college degree has nothing to do with the medical field therefore I do not offer any medical type of advice to anyone nor do I ask it of anyone online. I stick to the true professionals (MY DOCTORS).

Are you aware that a doctor is not a dietician and not the best source of nutritional information?

I am aware that, as a patient of the Veterans Administration, when asking my doctor these questions he set me up with the dieticians, physical therapist for a physical evaluation, cardiology, podiatry (due to foot disabilities), orthopedics (due to many other disabilities) and the weight management program. With all of the information obtained as a result of these examinations a plan was developed for me. I can assure you that the idiot MFP Police here who insist YOU HAVE TO INCLUDE RUNNING TO LOSE WEIGHT or YOU HAVE TO INCLUIDE WEIGHT LIFTING TO LOSE WEIGHT are clueless of individual situations and limitations. THAT IS FACT.

Did your doctor suggest having a negative net daily calorie goal? Or confirm starvation mode?

And you are right, anyone who says any type of exercise is required for weight loss is an idiot.

To answer the question simply, the food I eat, the exercise I do and all associated information such as calories consumed, micros, calories burned and my weight are all reported daily to the weight management program and forwarded to my doctor. When they have concerns they do call me. They called when my exercise (walking being the only exercise I can do because of severe disabilities to all extremities and other problems) dropped significantly to ask why. When they learned I have a broken foot and was seen by a private doctor they obviously understood and requested the records to review the situation and called me back to tell me to follow the advice given by the private doctor and made me an appointment for reevaluation next week.

    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1088600-dear-mean-people-of-mfp?hl=thank+you+mean+people

Or maybe they know people who are ready to accept the advice will take it, and only those who aren't ready will huff and puff about delivery.

Mean people changed me for the better. I was that 'I'm hungry, what do" woman, and the answer was "Eat." I was netting under a thousand calories a day and was weak and tired and the solution was "Gee, stop starving yourself idiot." and I would binge on candy "Maybe if you stopped trying to eat food you don't like, you'd stop shoving candy in your face?" and I wanted to know how I could get into lifting 'Here's some books, start reading. Do the work, get results."

I didn't need my hand held and glitter tossed at me, I needed simple to the point truth. Eat the food, read the books, do the damn work; anything else is just meaningless fluff to keep someone's butt from being hurt.

    ANGTFT

    *Love*

Edited because apparently I forgot how to bold text.

I've posted in the forums a few times. This is what I've found so far. Just like in non-internet life, there are jerks and nice people, some people take things for what they are, some take them the wrong way. Some want support, others just want a chance to voice their opinion, often and loudly. Lots of personalities on here and sometimes they clash. My advice if its hard for some to deal with these interactions is to stay off the forums and talk to those on your friends list that you know you can tolerate. Or choose topics that you are likely not to get offended by the responses of. Ex. I don't post on the "spank, smack" whatever threads, because there might be an opportunity to feel bad about myself and I will feel bad for others as well. So I don't post there. And I keep in mind that its a lot easier for some people to be mean through virtual communication.

Sthap with your common sense :flowerforyou:

I'm actually known as bad cop at work (I share my job with one other person so he is obv good cop). I actually tone down my natural sarcasm and snide comments here.

As someone pointed out this forum is butterflies and roses compared to some others. I don't get on with everyone in real life, I have no idea why people expect to get on with everyone on the Internet.

Also I have never seen any actually bullying on here, threads get heated and yes occasionally there is name calling and childish behaviour. But no actually bullying. There have been a few suicides in the UK recently due to Internet bullying, it's not a joke and it does not happen here.

I honestly don't get this thread. "Oh, look at me not logging all my calories and not knowing what TDEE is, I'm such a joyful rebel"... Seriously? I could care less if you log anything at all. This isn't instagram, this isn't for show off. I log my ALL my calories and I do that FOR MYSELF. So I know what I'm doing right and what I'm doing wrong. And I do appreciate people nosing into my diary and giving me feedback. I get it, a lot of people don't. But then they better not come crying later ERMAHGERD I HAZ PLATEAUD!!!

I learned a lot from "MFP Police" and very thankful for them. I don't blame them if they don't help people anymore. I think I will think twice before I help people anymore!! So when there is no more help on the forums what are you going to do than, complain about that too??

I can't speak for anyone but myself, of course, but it seems like the majority of the people who show up on these threads thinking they are about them or the other really knowledgeable people are likely not in the "mean people" variety. You may be straightforward, or funny, or a bit blunt, but I really don't think these threads are about you. I think these are more for those who don't tend to post much in the way of advice or information but just criticisms or mocking in some way of the OP. Can't name names, of course, so I'll just say that I don't think mean people threads are aimed at the majority but a very small but vocal minority.

Now, it's well over a year later and I'm still amazed at how tiny a tablespoon of peanut butter looks.

I gave up peanut butter the day I learned I could have two wedges of full fat cow cheeses for less cals than 1 tbsp of pb - lol

It ok, as someone posted earlier today. They'll get advice, it may not be correct but at least it will be given nicely with glitter and unicorns :noway:

I need to confess. Here is a list of rules that I have broken:

    1. I do not log every single little thing that goes into my stomach. I have a little creamer in my coffee every morning.... I don't log the coffee or the creamer. I also have a jar of sugar free hard candies on my desk..... I eat probably 6 of those a day. Oh, and I just had a chocolate and I have no intention on logging that either.

    2. I did not even know or understand what TDEE was until I googled it a couple months ago. Now I get it and I still have no intention on using it.

    3. Some days I do not eat my exercise calories back.

    4. Some days I am in starvation mode. Sometimes this will last for more than a day.

    5. I do not drink enough water. I am lucky if I make it to 6 cups in a day.

    6. I do not use a HRM. I use the calories burned MFP says. If I am on a treadmill, I will use that amount. Occasionally I will get curious and google "calories burned
" just to see what that says.

    7. I do not weigh or measure my food. I never have. I follow the hand guidelines that I have seen and heard many times.

    8. Some weeks I only weigh myself once, some weeks I will weigh myself 7 times. Sometimes I weigh myself more than once in a single day. It depends on how obsessive I am and wether or not I weighed myself and shortly before I had a good poop. Honestly, you can loose a whole pound just by going to the bathroom somedays.

    9. There are weeks when I am lazy all week and the only thing that will make me happy are pop tarts. 400 calories of toaster pastry goodness. And on those days, I do not log my pop tarts because I do not want to see what I did.

    10. I used to be fat..... just like you.

So there it is, folks. My confessions. Beat me up all you want. I am a MFP sinner.

Seriously though, I get on here everyday and I see people getting beat up on by the MFP police. Almost everyone on here started on here because they were overweight and needed/wanted to get healthy. It is great that so many people have lost weight and changed their lives through exercise, diet and education. You would not have started MFP if you were already an expert. See, if you were you would not have been overweight and unhealthy in the first place, right? Obviously, there are people on here who want the quick fix and the instant gratification. They are not going to be successful until they are ready to put in the hard work. I'm not going to lie, I did atkins. It worked.... until I stopped and gained all of the weight back.

Now me, I am against supplements, netting less than 1200, eating improperly all that nonsense. But, I do it sometimes myself (minus the supplements). I have gotten BELOW my goal weight and have broken the rules sometimes. Has it taken me a little longer since I have broken rules? Absolutely. But I still lost the weight. And I am still a success

Since we are all on this "journey" together, before you go juding people and calling them out for not being educated, remember you were uneducated about all of this once too. That's why you are here.

The point I am trying to make is why beat people up all of the time? Why talk badly about people and give negative feedback because you know something that they don't? Why not just be supportive or ignore? People are going to use supplements and not eat enough calories and not log everything. This site is supposed to be supportive, helpful and educational. Not full of a bunch of bullies. Haha I lost a 100 pounds and you are having trouble so let me be mean. Really? I know my ticker shows that I started this overweight. I am pretty sure most everyone else's does too.

Congrats you lost weight. I lost 36 pounds. I am not better than anyone else. I am just a fat girl living in a skinny world right now. And I would really love a jelly donut. Or some pop tarts.

Starvation mode is when you have less than 5% body fat, and you're close to dying. You won't hit "starvation mode" from missing a couple of meals.

Myths run rampant on this site!

You know I lost ALL of my weight without asking for advice on how to do so, without anyone telling me what I had to do or that I should not do that. Yeah all 70+lbs of it went without any help from anyone on here.

TDEE I didnt know about till I started 5:2 just over a month ago.

    Good on you OP.

But just wanna say.... in one day you are NOT in starvation mode. Not even after 2 are you in that mode. :flowerforyou:

Maybe you "Knowledgeable Posters" should open your Doctors Office where people can come to you for your professional educated opinion. Where did you receive your MD Degree and License to Practice?

Your doctor may not be that knowledgable either. And to answer your original question, My primary care clinic is in Iowa, and my degree came from the University of Iowa.

Since you ask, my college degree has nothing to do with the medical field therefore I do not offer any medical type of advice to anyone nor do I ask it of anyone online. I stick to the true professionals (MY DOCTORS).

I should clarify my post-solely because it's a public forum, I do think people posting should be prepared for all kinds of personalities and be prepared not to take things personally. Not because it's justification for rudeness, but just for the OP's own sake. Anything I consider personal to the point that I would be bothered by someone being a *kitten* is strictly friends list territory or IRL friend territory.

I'm not sure that naming the people you think are mean is against the guidelines, but I also accept PMs.

I see a lot of 'boo, hiss, mean people' and "Oh, not those people!/not you!" Well what people? Can we get some clarification?
  • I love the confessional! Also, I do much better when I read the forums and at times respond - the connection to others struggling or on the same journey is important to me and I am the only person in my very large social & work network who is obese. I've had things I've said taken in ways I never intended and felt startled, annoyed, angry etc over the perspective with which someone chose to color my words. I mentioned a study stating willpower was less effective than removing tempting foods for people trying to lose weight and immediately 2 people responded a)I didn't read the study well enough (bs), and b)I was abdicating personal responsibility. I was simply trying to support someone who's nutritionist said throw out the junk food, the person did, lost weight, but then was trashed for relating happy news for not moderating, for wasting food, etc etc on a huge thread. My responsibility is to learn from the study and act accordingly. Anyway, I digress; I really appreciate the message today!
