LOL- I try to by the same TYPE of socks- so I can mismatch if I need without having uneven thickness and stuff LOL
I'm definitely not upset by my "problem" LOL- I'm glad to see there are other folks who are rocking the mismatched socks!!
speaking of- new socks AND body glide.
My new shoes have arch- and any shoe with "arch support" gives me blisters- so I want to try some body glide on my foot to see if I can prevent that.
@skippygirlsmom - glad you got out of the way of the lightening! Hope you got a run in with the Skip!
@Ohhim - I am glad the bite wasn't worse! hopefully if you take care of it now and put lots of antiseptic on it after your triathlon it will be ok!
@CrimsonWhite - mmm shrimp and grits! Sounds wonderful and much more interesting than Panera. I love Panera but given the choice I would not hesitate!
@HonuNui - Hope you are feeling better and find a good (better) place for Chinese take out!
My planned 6 miles was abbreviated by a last minute meeting scheduled as I was heading out the door but I got it in and it was a lovely run! Hopefully this bit cooler weather continues for a few days! We even had some surprise thunder and rain this afternoon!

6.8 glorious miles tonight! Our sailing lesson ended early due to an incoming storm but instead of going home like a sane person, I went running. I made my way around two of our beautiful urban lakes, starting at dusk, just as the storm moved in.
With wet shoes I no longer had to avoid the puddles, I got to splash just like a little kid. The Minneapolis skyline across the lake, bathed an an aura of its own light, the urgent sound of waves hitting the shore, intermittent headlights reflecting off wet asphalt streets, the lights around the bandshell glowing like a lighthouse guiding me in, the flash of distant lighting followed by the low, guttural rumble of thunder, the occasional runner going the other way, some even smiling like I was, as our shirts hung heavy with rain.
Yeah, this was one of those runs where everything comes together, that you wish could go on all night. Soaked to the bone, tired, hungry and feeling awesome at the end, this was a great run.
It wasn't all duckies & bunnies though. As I sit here typing, my nipples HURT!!! That wet shirt did a number on them. Oh well, it was worth it.

@7lenny7 That sounds like a great run (except the wet-shirt-effect) - sometimes running in the rain can be just awesome.
@sushan88 Wow, nine day streak at the gym, that's great. You've really earned a rest day.
@5BeautifulDays I've never run on a treadmill with a movie, but somehow I pictured those would show landscapes. If I knew they show things like Mr Noodle vs Raptors, I might reconsider my habit of running outside. (No, I probably wouldn't. Although it's waaaay to hot outside at the moment!)
@Ohhim Oh no, that's terrible! I hope you don't get an infection. I would be a little scared about swimming in a non-clean lake with an open wound. There are some antiseptic liquid bandages which are supposedly waterproof - I'd probably put something like that on at least.

6.8.15 - 6 km. Was planning for 9km, but it's too freaking hot at the moment to run in the evening, so I dragged myself out of bed really early in the morning instead. Apparently, I was so tired I was moving around the appartmen in slow motion, because when I finally hit the road, there wasn't enough time for more if I wanted to be able to shower and still be on time for work after the run. That's one reason I prefer running in the evening, usually no time pressure there...

I love reading about everybody's runs. I'm looking forward to going out for a run tomorrow hitting the gym today for some weights training happy Friday everyone xx0

Happy Friday everyone!
Just logged yesterday's 'run' through the overflowing streets of London on tube strike day. Don't know if I'll be doing that again - not the most enjoyable experience! It was more of a run, doge, jog, walk, run again for the first 6 miles or so. Still, 12.3 miles done to make up for my late start this week!

I continue to stretch and rest my shins. I feel envious reading of everyone's runs! Still, I'm holding off for a few more days, at least.
Could lack of cushioning in my shoes be an issue? I have been running in Saucony Triumph ISOs, but I have a pair of ASICS Gel-Venture (trail) shoes that I bought just to have a pair of shoes to walk around in. They're less than six weeks old, and I notice they feel a bit bouncier than the Sauconys. Perhaps I should try running in those?
What are some good, shock-absorbing shoes for running (mostly) in the city?0 -
8/1: 5 miles
8/2: 11.5 miles
8/3: 4 miles
8/4: XT day: 42 min bike (12 miles) and 35 min walk (2 miles), AKA: 2 episodes of Gilmore Girls
8/5: 8 miles
8/6: 6.5 miles with the Thursday crew
8/7: 5 miles; Started off a bit sluggish from going so hard last night (oops), but ended up with a moderately speedy last 3 miles.
It's weird to think about how "not long" 5 miles seems to me now when a year ago 5 miles would have been one of my longest midweek runs. These days it's usually among my shortest! What a difference a year makes!

Having trouble accessing my ticker so will enter manually. (Not that it's a very impressive amount, LOL.)
@7lenny7, loved the poop article for runners in Minnesota and really loved reading about your run in the rain. I love being in the rain and especially love running in it. Sounds awesome!
@Karllundy - I love being a part of the dog group! I have five at home but one in particular (in my profile pic) is my running buddy. He's part boxer, part Rhodesian Red, and part leech. He has to be touching someone at all times when he's inside.
I have run 6 miles so far and have 24 to go. I only signed up for 30 miles but should be doing more. I think this challenge is a great motivator.
Great job everyone!!!!0 -
@7lenny7 - check out if any of your local running stores have a "Good Form Running Clinic" -- it's just an hour or two.
@ddmom0811, that's a great idea! I often wonder if I'm using good form. I've picked up a few thing here and there, but it would be nice to have someone review everything with me.
@Pandora_and_her_box, that sounds like quite a frustrating run! Still, you got out for a great long run!

8/6 - 3.1 mi, beautiful morning in Central Iowa!
8/7 - 4.25 mi, love that 70° and humid now seems pleasant!
@7lenny7 - I love running in the rain! Glad you enjoyed it!
@traci9028 - I have a rescued greyhound, but have never actually run with him...he's a sprinter, I am not.
@kristinegift - Not quite getting the mileage you are, but my routine 4-5 mile workouts would have been as long as I had ever run at this time last year. When you look at things that way, your regular runs seem like such an accomplishment...I love it!
Have a great weekend, all! I'm going to Galena, IL to celebrate my 20th anniversary with my wife. Gonna try to squeeze in a run or two.0 -

here's an article you may find interesting...
http://running.competitor.com/2015/08/injury-prevention/the-dangers-of-overstriding-and-how-to-stop-it_132726
@Stoshew71, thanks for the link! Good stuff to think about! I had been trying to run softly before, but this nagging calf thing has made me work even harder at it and I think it will pay off, not only for this issue, but in the long run. This is one of the reasons I quit listening to music when I run. It messes up my cadence.
We have a local orthopaedic clinic which has running specialists. I may go in to have a running evaluation done if I insurance will cover it. It would be nice to get a professional evaluation done to make sure I'm using a running technique that will minimize the chance of injury.
Yes, I have been dealing with glute and hamstring issues (related to overuse and that slows my cadence) but I too hope that the adjustments I made will pay off big dividends.
I stopped listening to music, but I do have links to music at 180 bpm that actually helps with candance. I know I provided the links in previous thread a few months ago and can repost.
Our local FleetFeet has a specialist come in and give a free evaluation once a month. I went one time and she gave me a couple of exercises to do. One legged squats and lunges.

You may need time to adapt. Run, stretch, rest, repeat. You may want to look and make sure you are using good running form as well. Bad form puts weight and stress on muscle groups not designed to handle the shock of long distance running. As the advise people were giving @7lenny7 to see if a local running specialty store has running form clinics, you may want to look into it as well. I also have videos that i can post that talk about good running form.
If you have questions about shoes, I strongly advise going to a running specialty store and try different ones on after you been through a gait analysis by a professional. What works for one person may not work for another person.

I actually plan to go back to a running store to get fitted again once I get my orthotics back. However, when I got fitted before they put me in support shoes with my orthotics, and running in them really hurt my foot. I wasn't able to run or walk much for a couple weeks. In asking about more cushioned shoes, I was trying to gather information so I know what to ask to try on when I get to that point.

@juliet3455 - LOL on the last time you saw your boss. My dad was a mechanic so it was learn to fix it or be left on the side of road.
@ohhim - I can't believe a dog bit you. Heal quickly!!
@briebee7 - your run sounds wonderful alone in the forest
@jorocka - glad it was wasn't just me MFP was hating on yesterday. I was laughing at all the mismatched socks, we call them mixmatch. I take Skips socks from the dryer and dump them on her bed because it frustrates me not to be able to match them, I'm too OCD
@7lenny7 - great job getting the run in, I was reading thinking wow that sounds great, until I got to nip problem - so sorry
@pandora_and_her_box - sounds like you were running an obstacle course.
@karllundy - 20 years - congrats that is so awesome, enjoy the weekend trip
@stoshew71 - I hope everything is okay at home
@traci9028 - I just fell out laughing at your part leech dog - their sister lives at my house
@kristinegift - it's amazing how far we can go with hard work and dedication
@demoiselle2014 - is there a running store near you that can help fit you with the right shoes? It really makes all the difference.
Happy Friday!!0 -

I had the Gel Keyano which is ASICS flagship cushion shoe. But other brands make them too.
I got my Gel keyano 20's in December 2013 at Burlington Coat Factory in the Jersey Gardens Outlet store. Normally they run like $160-180. I got mine for $49.0 -
Goal: 40 miles
8/4 - 3.66 miles. Darn ITB bothered me around 3. I thought I was over this.
8/6 - 4.33 miles. No ITB pain, but slowed WAY down. Cautiously optimistic

@Ohhim Please give us an update on your dog bite. Praying for your Triathlon too!
@JoRocka Did using Body Glide on your feet help? I can only imagine the theatrical run I would have if I perhaps would apply it to my feet!
@murciaa Yes, getting back to running as a Mommy is something to thank the LORD for. I consider it like a mini- vacation each morning I get out and run in His creation.
@Elise4270 So sorry you are very busy. We know you are most dedicated to your runs and our little group here.
@sushan88 Planning to kick it up a notch next week not in distance per say, but with intensity---- I love upping the distance, but upping the intensity (speed) ugg that’s hard! Great goal, strive hard! Many blessings!
@WhatMeRunning - Road Hokas, funny!
@horserae You are surely running strong there my friend!
@7lenny7 - Truly poetic! Running is not your only gift Sir.
@karllundy - Thanks for making me feel great about running 12 the other day. I know you can make that distance in one run for sure. You're packing up the miles yourself this month. Just adding more distance, slowly, once a week to one of your runs, does the trick. I used Hal Higdon's plan. Not sure if everyone thinks he's got a great plan, but it works for me. The biggest things- inc speed slowly, rest on rest days, and walk if you need to.
4 miles today. Knees feel so much better.

OK, I put a bunch of links up that talk about good running form, overstriding, cadence, drills you can do, and music that gets you to run at 180 steps per minute.

8/3/15 - 10 miles
8/4/15 - 5.34 miles

Tried something new today--got up at 5:30am and got a 3 miler in before work. I generally don't run in the morning unless it's the weekend, but am leaving town right after work so it was the only way to squeeze a run in. Contrary to what I thought, running that early actually didn't kill me.

@ohhim - That sucks! I would recommend getting it checked out by a Dr. The big concern is bacterial infection, not so much anything that the dog needs shots for. Good luck on the Tri!
Ok - got it checked out by an ER physician friend. Got a script for an oral antibiotic (amox). Unfortunately, by law the bite needed to be reported to animal control by the physician, likely resulting in both a 10 day quarantine (in home) for the dog, and an off-leash citation for the owner as the dog was 2 doors down from them/their home when it bit me (potentially leading to a court date if they don't plead). Just hoping it is just a small ordinance citation vs. misdemeanor for the dog owner - given the implications of that type of offense.
I'll keep it as sterile as possible for tomrrow's tri w. liquid bandage & bandage over top.0
