What nobody tells you about losing weight

That when your friends ask you what you are doing to lose weight and you tell them about your healthy eating and working out they look bored...and say they couldn't be bothered to do all that and yet they continue to bore you with moaning about their weight issues.
This! I have a friend who could really use to shed some weight but hates exercise. I keep telling her that 90% of my weightloss has come from diet not from exercise, but just because she knows that I have started running a bit she refuses to believe me and continues keeping cookies next to her bed. It makes me sad because i know that diet really is the way and think she is just using her dislike for exercise as a way to stay miserable.4 -

it's definitely overwhelming. I'm the online clothes shopper, baggy is my style. In January, after being at this for two months I finally went to the mall to non-big girl stores to try on clothes. Had no idea of what number size I was since everything I owned was always extra large, 2 or 3X. I got overwhelmed by the number of choices, the multiple departments and that everything seemed to be a different size from the number on the hangers and it was going to take forever. Mild anxiety attack. Finally went to The Gap, tried on jeans and then cried in the dressing room when the 12s fit. I had 24/26 yoga pants in my closet.

For me, it's seeing the downward slope in the long view in the weight report. Makes all the fluctuations seem less important, even if I've gone up half a pound on a day. Like someone else said, it's a roller coaster. Stay on it!
And wearing my clothes again. I didn't buy a lot of big clothes. I had all these size 6's and smalls. I bought a few size 10 jeans and slacks. A few medium shirts. So when I could reclaim 2 pairs of size 6 jeans that was huge! Now those size 6's are starting to feel too loose (must be that vanity sizing) and I've still got 4 pounds until my goal weight! It's been exciting to see what I've already got in my closet.
And buying a few new things to celebrate where I'm going and finding I can already wear them! Most were bought at thrift stores or off clearance racks. Motivation clothes bought mostly in April when I started this journey.
Not depriving myself of yummy things. Just limiting the amount of those yummy things. I can have a cookie. I can have just one cookie, not 2. I can have potato chips, but I count them, so I only want whole chips. No broken pieces. I used to just eat all the little broken pieces. It felt like I wasn't eating so much but think about how many broken cheese curls there are in a bag of cheese curls!
Seeing I've got a figure again. I was looking "wide" in photos and in the mirror. I don't look wide anymore. I look thin. I still have a bit of a belly but it doesn't seem to make me look fat anymore.
I'd like to say inspiring my family but no. My daughter doesn't see the need though she's 14 and getting paunchy. (So much easier to keep it off than to lose it once it's there!) And my husband is still over 200lbs and technically obese but he still won't even shrink his portion sizes. I do think I've inspired my step-sister, though, so that's good.

Strangely enough in getting thicker skin. I got called fat in the forum yesterday by a silly butthead troll and it really really didn't phase me. My sister in law (her and I had never gotten along) had a very loud laugh in the school office in front of me and about 17 other parents (pretending she didn't know I was there) about how her fat, stupid ugly sister in law is trying to lose weight again and it's totally not working. I laughed it off. I can lose my weight. I can better myself (currently studying nursing while working and being a mum) yet she'll always be a *kitten*. You can't diet or exercise away a bad personality.
This would normally have sent me home crying into a packet of chocolate biscuits. But I LAUGHED IT OFF!! ME!! So proud of myself

No one told me how to deal with a colleague that sees me at the supermarket with a cart full of fresh veggies fruits and asks "where is the good food you will eat?". Excuse me for buying vegetables instead of all chips, soda and donuts. On a side note, my husband works at a bakery and the cinnamon rolls are a treat not a necessity.2

How empowering it is to realize all of the things you can DO as your new stronger, smaller self! 40 pounds ago I would never have attempted a running class, much less my first 5K. Today Success!!8

When you use the soap dispenser, you have to be careful because the soap will go straight through between your skinny fingers and you'll make a big mess in the office bathroom again and again and again.3

The hard skin on your feet disappearing, which a few people have mentioned. I had always thought I had some sort of skin condition that caused it! Nope, just 70 lbs I didn't need.
How blazé I would become about my newly-emerged collarbones (moved on to being in awe of my hip bones instead)
How unbelievable it would be to lift a load similar to how much I had lost and think I had been carrying that every day- no wonder I was so slow!
Realising that 50's style, nipped-in-at-the-waist clothes would no longer have to be my go-to or even the style that flatters most anymore
How much cheaper it is to dress now that I am skinny (notwithstanding the huge sum spent on replacing a whole wardrobe). I can rock an inexpensive T-shirt and jeans now, whereas before I was wearing carefully collated and layered, tailored outfit designed to flatter the good and conceal the bad. Packing for holidays is so much easier too and I have so much more room in my drawers. Getting dressed in the morning is a breeze without the "will this fit me?" drama.
How self-conscious I would become with all the attention paid to my weight loss and my body now and that I would become less accepting of how my body looks. But, on the flip side, shooting past my goal clothes size of UK size 14 to a previously never-dared-to-dream size 10. I have no issues with how I look in clothes- I check myself out all the time!
The best thing of all is that I had no idea I would be an inspiration to my friends and work colleagues. We even formed a health club at work on the back of my weight loss.

That's been huge for me too--learning to throw away junk food that I'm not enjoying. I once read in a dr's office Readers Digest: "Better to let it go to waste than to waist". For some reason, that really stuck with me because I realized that either way I'm throwing it out because it's not providing nutritional value and I'm not enjoying it. I'd rather throw it out in the garbage than in my hips! lol8 -

How fantastic!!, I wish I could do the same. Have tried to get lunchtime games of football (soccer) going but to no avail. Biggest problem is some moron scheduling a meeting that is 'unable to be moved'. Sorry but my health is more important, I'll read the minutes later but my colleagues don't think the same and forgo lunch for the meeting. I used to be like that but no more. I just go running by myself instead.
How weird it is when people touch you (kind of like pregnant women) where they will slap your *kitten*, pinch your hips, run a hand over the stomach because its "flat"(er) and turn you around in a circle to "get a better view". It was from a friend but made me really self conscience and kind of embarrassed about my journey. You didn't do that before, why are you doing it now? Now I cringe every time I see her because I know she's going to make a huge deal.2 -

I agree with the comment about it being an emotional rollercoaster but it's made me so much better mentally as well. AND ALSO....my car is more comfortable lol I drive a small suv. So far I've lost 50 pounds and I've noticed that I don't have to "scooch" my butt over anymore when I fasted my seatbelt. haha6

Thanks! Amazingly, another woman in the office just wanted to find out how I had done it and thought others could benefit too. So we meet once a week now, to share experiences, talk about new recipes, what has worked, what hasn't. Basically, we want everyone to sign up to MFP and to get moving! We aren't having much success persuading people to come with us on a weekly lunchtime walk yet, but we'll keep plodding on. One woman who joined the group has lost 40 lbs in a few months and others have done great as well.

If they're people you see very often, like every other day, the change might be so gradual that they honestly don't notice. Also, if you're wearing the same clothes you did 25 pounds ago, it may be camouflaging your weight loss. I bought a new shirt (I'm cheap and don't want to get rid of clothes until I absolutely have to) that fit properly and people I see everyday were all, 'where did all the weight go?'.9 -

I got a new work shirt that actually fitted me and bam everyone commented on how much weight I've lost. My older baggier shirt was hiding it3

My coworkers notice. The family who lives with me, less so, for that reason that it's gradual and they see me all the time. It's why we don't notice our kids grew up behind our backs. We look back at a picture of them 4 years ago and think, "My gosh! They were so little!". I kind of miss the little girl my daughter was. She like hugs and wasn't so sassy. But that's off-topic. (BTW: I rather like the boy my son is right now. There are reasons he was removed from our house. He's so much wiser now at 13.)0

Sometimes you can lose lots of weight and still be wearing the same clothing. I had to trade in my shoes because they were too big, but my clothing is just kind of loose on me now. In a way it is good because I haven't had to spend extra money on it yet, but it is also bad because I'm still wearing the same old tents.
I had to quote myself because I has an epiphany earlier. I went shopping and saw something I liked so I went to try it on. In the dressing room before I took off my clothing I caught sight of myself in the mirror and I really looked at myself. My clothing looks massive. My jeans look like I'm wearing a sag so deep that if you could see the top of my jeans (you can't, huge shirt) you'd be able to see my underwear. I knew my clothing was a little loose, but I seriously did not notice they were that big. These were the jeans I couldn't fit into before. So, I am amending my earlier statement. You can lose weight and still be wearing the same clothing, but maybe pay better attention to how your clothing is actually fitting versus how you think it is fitting.
I ended up buying clothing that is several sizes smaller and dancing out of the changing room much to the amusement of the attendant.

Similar to this is when I go try on clothes and have to go back for a smaller size....It always looks way to small to fit me and then is too big. I think I was used to hiding in oversized clothes.
Word of caution about wearing clothes that are too big for too long. In the past it lulled me into thinking that I wasn't gaining back the weight once I'd stop journaling / weighing. Plan to stick with it this time.
Having been a goodwill / resale / thrift store / clearance rack shopper for years you can reoutfit for not much money. Although prices went up during the recession with a new influx of customers there are still treasures to be found. Even goodwill has become label conscious and marks up accordingly, but though they may now recognize Joan and David shoes they usually don't have a clue as to who thierry rabotin is. I bought a pair of his shoes never worn for $4.99 that retailed new $300+ and used on Ebay for $100+. Like I said, a treasure hunt.
Helpful hints, find the locations that consistently have better quality. I have traveled multi state for work for years and have found that goodwills with nearby private universities always had a ton of 'tags still on' new stuff just after Christmas and at the end of Spring term when the kids pack up to go home. Conversely they will have nothing of interest midsummer if they are in a tiny town. Two more examples, shoes with Neiman Marcus clearance tags of $500 still on and an Escada jacket at the same thrift store for less than $10 each.
For those of you who are worried about bed bugs etc, I have a greater risk of that staying at Hilton properties 80+ nights/year for my business travel.

I enjoy eating healthy.
I enjoy exercising.
I enjoy MOVING!
I want to go out more with my friends to clubs and bars. I don't want to sit home alone.
I'm not constantly scared of what people think of me.
I FEEL better, not just about myself on the outside, but on the inside too.
My husband can pick me up...wow...what a feeling!
I feel strong.
I feel more CONFIDENT.
I smile more.
I feel light on my feet!
I don't have to swing the car door completely open to get out!
I could go on and on and on, about how this journey is changing my life. Bottom line is...
LIFE IS BETTER!!!!!!! Good luck to you all on your journey!
