Since doing these challenges... how do you say it... I'm cranking out the miles, pounding the pavement, running the streets, in beast mode? Say what you will it's October 19 and I'm at 76%

    10/19 5.0 @ 12:10 Trail run at the local park trail--31degrees--brrr!

@skippygirlsmom and @gabbo34 I'm going to buy a few more long-sleeve wicking tees to layer. The jacket is nice the first half mile or so, but then way too much, and the tshirt under it isn't enough. I like the gloves--I think I'd really like handwarmers!--and then hate them once my hands were warm, lol. I also like the idea of a headband. I like my ears to be warm, but I also want the heat to escape from the top of my head.

@auna01 what @stoshew71 said is so true. The end of 2014 I literally went from 140 miles a month to zero because of a pain in my leg that went from my butt down my knee and would make my foot numb. Orthopedic wanted to do surgery and said "no more running EVER". PT (who is a runner) said "I'll have you running pain free in a week". Two months after seeing the PT I ran my first half marathon pain free. By the way I stopped to see him after my HM and he was so happy to see me and my medal  then sat me down to discuss me, how was I during the race, did I have any pain, what was my training mileage before etc. THAT is the type of person you need to see.

@5beautifuldays like someone else said it's all trial and error when it comes to dressing for the cold.

    @vteichert welcome!

I haven't been on much the past few days as football has taken over my weekends but I was able to get a great run in on Saturday. Somehow I've gotten into the habit of having 2-3 drinks a night the past couple weeks - I think the fall weather and football season make me crave it more. I've noticed that even having just a couple drinks makes me feel less than enthused for my workouts the next day. I'm going to cut it out this week and see if it makes a difference in how I feel when I run.

    10/01: 4.34

    10/06: 4.96

    10/14: 1.65
    10/15: 5.04
    10/17: 5.35

I'll be back on later today after I get in my afternoon workout. Hope everyone is having a great Monday!

    10/5 - 3 miles
    10/7 - 3.23 miles

    10/11 - 12 miles
    10/16 - 2.5 miles. slow and painful.
10/19 - 3.23 miles - knee complained a bit at the beginning but wasn't sharp and went away

Hopeful that I can run this 1/2 on sunday! I'm taking it easy this week, 3-3.5 miles max to let my knee keep getting better. Not sure what I did to hurt it, but I hope I never do it again!

No time to really read and catch up with everyone. Busy, busy weekend and now I am heading to Dallas for work. Hopefully I can read through and catch up tonight in the hotel. Also hoping to get in a few treadmill workouts while I am there if the schedule allows. Might even get to meet up with @Elise4270 which would be awesome!

Congratulations to everyone who was racing this last weekend! I am excited to read about how you all did!

    I'm back!

I had a 6 day period where I didn't do any running. I just had too much to do to get ready to take my son deer hunting, and then of course there was the deer hunting itself. I thought I might get in some runs after we got back to the motel, but there wasn't enough time and I decided I'd rather hang out with the kid. I guess I ended up with a drastic cut-back week.

We were unsuccessful getting a deer but we had a great time and will try again next year. We got back late Saturday and with most of the gear still in the truck I quickly went out for a 5 mile run. I followed that up with a 15.1 mile run yesterday, the first half with Kody, the second half alone. It felt great to be back on the road again, though I'm not sure how this will affect my training (HM in 12 days), or how/if I should adjust my planned taper. I think I'll try to increase my planned miles this week but stay with my light miles next week.

There's no way I'll make my goal this month and with an HM on the 31st I'm certainly not going to push it. 120 miles is more like it now. No regrets though.

Lots of posts to catch up with! I'll plow through those in the coming days.

    10/02 - Camping, hiking
    10/03 - Camping, hiking

@kareF the 10k was great thank you. Lovely route by the river and along some tree lined paths. It was one of my friends first ever race and she was quite emotional when she crossed the finish line. She had a similar experience with running to me in that she had been put off it for years after upsetting experiences at school. She put those demons to rest when she finished and is now keen to do another race.

My pre race strategy was a complete farce though. Having come down with a cold on Friday I still decided to go out drinking and I swore to my wife that I would be home by 10pm at the latest and tucked up in bed. At midnight I was still out, drunk as a lord, and eating a Double Whopper...

This meant I was late getting up for the race, didn't have time for breakfast, was dehydrated and spent the first half of the race trying not to throw up or fall face first! I felt good by the second half of the race but my pacing ultimately was all over the place. Live and learn I guess.

Anyway, my cold has knocked me back a bit so I doubt I will get much running done until later on this week so I will probably sulk for a bit...

I'm sharing this with a coworker. She doesn't understand why my first year of consistent running I will not attempt a marathon. It's on her bucket list. It's on my long term list only after I have reached shorter distance milestones and the desire has to be there. Thanks for sharing :)

I can't imagine how little you know in your first year of running to even think of that- I'm just at a point where I would vaguely consider it- and even then- the sheer volume of training I'm not sure I'm prepared for mentally.

When I got into running I scoffed at even attempting a half. Once I saw that was possible for me, I figured I was at least 3 years away from attempting a full.

Now, after building up to 18 miles while training for my half and still feeling great, I'll likely try to do a full next year. The Twin Cities Marathon is the first weekend in October, has a great route, and is timed well for me to train for. The biggest trick will be to make sure I can get the miles in while not neglecting my family.

10/19-4.36(I forgot I had to run today. I need to stretch.)

@Stoshew71 That's a great article. I do that to myself. I never thought I would have a goal of running 95 miles.
@skippygirlsmom I'm sorry. I love music. That Soul Train line is awesome. When my fro gets bigger, I'm dancing like that at work. I've already warned my manager but I need a block out the sun fro first.

You guys! I literally cannot believe it. I just ran nearly 2 miles straight for the first time in my life. 13 min mile but whatever I did it, loved it, and felt like I could have kept going.

I feel like a champ! Lol

@msf74 I hate to laugh at your pain, but you know I am. I'm impressed you got to the race at all let alone ran it. Oh yeah and I'm so going to use the phase drunk as a Lord in the future!

@shanaber and @elise4270 how cool if you met up in Dallas!

@skippygirlsmom - oh my gosh on the energy drink! I don’t use them and don’t know much about them, but that is downright scary it caused such problems in a young person.
@patrikc333 - WOW! That is an amazing time on marathon!!!
@gabbo34 - yes, same awkwardness if I’m at a race alone. Would be cool if we can find a place where many could meet!
@5beautifuldays - Nice picture! My husband went to George Mason also. :) Great PR!
@tdbernrd - Those dance moves look like an exercise. I remember soul train…. in DC area it was the only thing on TV I think on Sat or Sun afternoons…? Forgot which day.
@9voice9 - lol, yes, please just be visible to cars and not making everything else visible.

    Oct 1 - cycling class
    Oct 2 - rest - traveling
    Oct 3 - rest
    Oct 4 - 13.1 HM!
    Oct 5 - rest - traveling

Oct 18 - 77 mile bike ride. Was a charity ride for a local cyclist who was in a bad wreck (not on his bike). Weather was great, except for the wind.
    Oct 19 - rest day!

    exercise.png

Definitely need to increase the mileage if I am to reach my goal. Since I'm only running 3x a week right now, it is making it more difficult. Unless I do >2 exercise activities in a day, I can't run more. Although on Saturday morning this woman in the cycling club said she had run 6 miles, then did the 34 mile bike ride with us, and was then going to run 8 miles. Training for a Triathlon she said. I'm strong... but not that strong!

    10/15 rest
    10/16 storm
    10/17 3.26
10/18 deeply unmotivated....and too busy watching football..
10/19 7.15 I had a planned 9m run. At mile 5, a BIG pit mix lumbered out of (very tall) grass in one front yard and followed me. And followed. And followed. Some of you may remember when Lily the stray followed us, and who is now part of the family. I knew DH would NOT be happy with another stray (and this boy was obviously VERY well fed)...so well fed that I cut the run at about 7 miles cause I knew he was not up to the full thing, but clearly he was gonna follow....I ran back to the park (next to the house whence he came,) and led him to drink in the river.....

@msf74 - Also count me in the boat of those impressed that you made it to the race, let alone ran it! I had a similar Friday except I went to Wendy's for the 4x4 deal (nuggets, fries, bacon cheeseburger and a drink for $4). A few pulls of Fireball later and I was done.

    @kstar_lee - Congratulations! What a great feeling!

I managed to run today after my booze-filled weekend but I was tired, slow and overall unenthusiastic. I didn't run far but I'm glad I got out there anyway. Going to take it easy this week and look forward to running my first race this coming weekend!
