Congress, pharmaceuticals and lobbyists at their finest. But meanwhile, if meats, dairy and fish are eliminated from the diet in place of plant-based foods, the body's need to neutralize acid in the blood stream disappears hence the body's need for overall calcium intake could be reduced.
Technically, being lactose intolerant is the default state. Mammals are born with the ability to digest lactose in order to be able to breastfeed and lose it as they get older.
So, the correct question would be, why are there so many people who are not lactose intolerant?
We evolved ourselves towards it. When we started domesticating cows we started drinking their milk too because for once we didn't have to hunt and kill animals to get close to them. Some people got sick of it, others didn't or to a lesser extent. The ones who got sick were more likely to die and the rest is biology.
If you look at a map of lactose intolerance, it's most prevalent in the places where domestication of cows didn't happen and much lower in the places where it did. Mostly Europe and places mostly inhabited by people of European descent.

ok i have read all 15 pages. Some posts were funny as hell, some were annoying. IMO I drink milk. I love it and always have. I can drink a gallon a day if I could and not gain weight. Hell, I could pretty much drink milk and consume nothing else and be happy but that would be ridiculous and probably weird. lol. So for dieting purposes I like to cut it out most day, that days I know if I have one glass it will lead into 10, and drink 1 or 2 glasses on days I have more self control.0

ROFL! I only drink skim. I have been told that I am drinking flavoured water, but I'm okay with that. ;-) I am not a fan of milk in general, so maybe that's why skim is more appealing to me - it has less milk taste. Ha ha. It also makes a mean cappuccino foam. And since I prefer to eat my calories - not drink them - it works well for me. But to each his/her own. Skim milk tastes like sadness to you, but to me, it is my morning joy.

I don't drink milk very often, mostly because I choose not to drink my calories. I do love and eat ice cream and cheeses, sour cream and the like.
Too much dairy for me causes gut issues and we have lovingly coined the term "moopoos" in our house to describe those days where you just needed the largest of large MILKSHAKE.

It's pretty simple. Milk is what baby cows live off of. They grow huge, both in muscle in fat. So to do the same, drink milk. Most don't want to get huge from fat, so drink skim milk instead, and you'll get just the huge muscle result.

Unsweetened almond milk or cashew milk is much lower in calories and carbs than even skim milk, and it's actually higher in calcium. But even then, I have to be careful not to binge on it, because it tastes sooo good, and it's a liquid, and it's refreshing, and I'm always thirsty. Liquid calories just go down way too fast and easy. I keep it around only because I'm afraid of not getting enough calcium, but it's a struggle. If I had actual milk here, forget about it. I'd never be able to lose weight. In terms of protein, milk doesn't do much to satisfy my appetite. Generally speaking, I stay away from liquid calories, since they seem to bypass the stomach and go straight to the hips. Dairy is just a ton of extra calories I don't need. For protein, there's meat, which will do a much better job of satisfying my hunger with a reasonable amount of calories, and I won't keep eating it the way that I'll keep drinking a liquid.0

Almond milk is only high in calcium because it's supplemented. Which is fine, of course, but if that's why you are drinking it a plain supplement might be even lower in calories.
If because you like it, that's different.
I keep meaning to make cashew milk (for example: http://cookieandkate.com/2013/cashew-milk-recipe/), but because it actually contains cashews I assume this kind of thing would be a lot higher cal than the storebought almond milk or strained version of that you make at home. So curious as I am it runs against my general aversion to drinking calories.0 -
I just don't like milk, but if I did I'd drink it. I switched over to vanilla almond milk for cereal which tastes better (to me) and is only 30 calories/8oz...no protein though.0

I only drink skim milk and not very often due to the sugar content. I can't taste the difference between skim or 1% but hubby will argue there's a huge difference. I'm just happy I don't notice it!0

They don't universally fortify with Vitamin D which is a minus. More of them are though, and I'd hope it becomes universal.0
