Wenesday Wish ... my wish today is that I make headway on my goal to break my sedintery habits! I've become so compelled to post on MFP every morning it's become the first thing I do as I sit down with my coffee in front of my computer. And time gets away from me so quickly that it's going on noon before I realize it. I know the pattern is deeply ingrained ... I haven't missed a day in well over a year ... 340 days running with the current user-Id.
I've thought about changing my morning pattern of what and how I do them to see if that will help. This morning I did good at first, but then broke down and I fired up the computer to read the online morning paper while I had my breakfast ... and it's 2 hours later, and I'm still here. Maybe I need to get off the community pages for a while.1 -
@Nikion901 - so, my new mantra is "the first step is the hardest..." In your case it appears that the first step is shutting off the computer - lol. Do you think maybe you can put technology in place to help you? Maybe put a "parental control" in place that shuts the thing down after a certain time? Or maybe set a timer or alarm clock? Good luck!1

That's funny @birgitkwood ... I do shut down the computer, but it only takes a gently press on a button to fire it back up! ... No, I need to work on this habit the same way I worked on the habit to log every single day ... I need to go back to a notepad that then gets transferred in ... except I do need to log my food everyday because I tend to undervalue the calories I'm consuming when I don't log. Maybe the solution is to get a smart phone? Hee-Hee, more technology
PS see ... I was on at 11:14 and got off ... cut the grass, had lunch, and here I am ... logging my lunch and 'just taking a peek' at the community pages!

Hmmm... @Nikion901 , a smart phone with text-to-voice feature. That way, while you're out walking, mowing, or whatever you'll be able to HEAR your messages instead of having to log in. That way you can be truly tethered to all of us at all times. Lol. Nah... You'll figure it out and you're I the right track. You've done our before, after all. Best wishes, Birgit1

Hi Everyone
I'm new to MFP and have about 150 lbs to lose. Urgh.. when I see that number it seems so hard to believe. I'm trying not to focus on the large number but working on smaller goals. This is by no means the first time I've tried losing weight. I used to be active on the WW boards but they are no longer available. Loved the support on those boards...hoping to find something similar here.
Thanks for reading!3 -
@ ready and willing
I am only 11 days back on track after months off the rails. I am finding it much less stressful than I ever have before so far. My stress levels are low around the food because unlike every other time, this time I am not thinking about the number on bathroom scale. I decided to bin bathroom scale so it no longer has any power over me. I am now left free to focus all my attention on eating decent food and I do weigh and measure my food and log it. My reasoning is, if I take care of what goes into my body then the rest will take care of itself. I find it so much easier to focus without the anticipation of weigh ins hanging over me. I will weigh myself If think I look too skinny one day far down the line .2 -
@readyandwilling2 , welcome! When I started my weight loss journey I broke my goals up in 10pct chunks. Take your current weight, calculate 10pct and have that be your goal. It's a smaller, more manageable number, and will provide you with tons of health benefits. I guarantee you, when you've list your first 10pct, you'll feel so good you'll want to shoot for the next 10pct down. Currently I'm working on my 3rd 10pct, and I feel GREAT! Wishing you all the best, Birgit3

The only advice I can share is to figure out what works for you and keep doing it. For me it is a calorie limit and exercise. For some people it helps to start off with wholesale dedication to a highly structured plan where each meal is preplanned. Others find it easier to stick with it if they make just one small change at a time - eliminating one or two less healthy foods, or adding one serving of vegetables to each meal. Still others thrive on challenges, deadlines, or milestones like a wedding or big, public celebration. Sometimes it is a combination of all of the above.
Whichever you choose, just know that you will have days when six ghirardelli chocolate caramel squares and two slices of pizza slip down your throat. Or days when the very last thing you want to do is put on your sneakers and work out. And sometimes those all happen on the same day. As long as those days are not frequent, you will still have success!
I like this group for some simple reasons - no one is entirely wacko, at least in their writings, except maybe me, there isn't anyone whining about losing five pounds to get back in to their size 0 jeans (who knew those existed!), and we've all been in that "OMG I need to lose the equivalent of a whole person" place at least once in our lives.
reading through for inspiration, you are all amazing, this hit home, I need to lose the equivalent of one of my not so young children... I tried to pick him up, woah. Started a month ago, thankful for groups like this one I think will help along the way Today we walked an hour through backyard trails (some really steep climbs in there!) Another hour going from one end of my road to the other and back (about 4.6 km round trip 90% uphill one way, going to attempt this daily and hope to see results soon!3 -
@readyandwilling2 Hi! I was active on the WW boards too. Personally, I like this board better than the ones at WW. I am done with WW points for good. I hope you enjoy mfp as much as i do. Welcome!
Rach1 -
@Bentnotbroken130 , you WILL see results soon. Actually, it's amazing how quickly you will find your walking stamina improving. When I started using my Fitbit back in April, I thought it was a good day when I logged 3k steps, huffing and puffing every inch. Now I walk at least 3miles daily and a "lazy" day is "only" 13k steps. That happened incredibly quickly. So stick with it, and enjoy your walks.4

Hi! New to this community, and trying this weight loss thing again. Need to lose about 120 lbs. Really hoping I can make positive, lasting changes this time around, so I can use all the support and motivation I can get.1

Welcome to all the “newbies.” This is a wonderful group of folks that are very encouraging and inspirational. I used to get on here every day because I had a job that was slow to say the least. Now I’m in a rush, rush, rush environment. That makes my day go faster but sometimes I forget to take a break and get on the community page.
@Birgit…my magic mojo was lifting weights with my sister…that worked great until she got pregnant and had a high risk pregnancy so we had to stop. She’s no longer pregnant so when I get the clearance to start lifting, we’re going to get back at it. We were really good about saying “nope, let’s go” if the other one said they didn’t feel like it. We are also both night owls so it worked well for us to go after the rush. If it was up to either of us to motive each other at 5:30 in the morning, it would have never worked.
@Karen…hope you’re feeling better and got to it before it started full blown.
Wednesday Wish (I thought of it yesterday but never got on line to type it up). I had stated earlier that I was struggling with no bread. My guidelines say that I can have whole wheat toast so I thought why not a crusty bagette type bread? OMG…My new stomach does NOT like it!!! So my wish is that whenever I look at bread lustfully in the future, I rmember how terrible I felt for hours afterwards.
Thursday Truth: I’m disappointed that so far I haven’t found any big changes in my taste buds. Several places indicated that people find that some foods they loved in the past no longer taste good and that foods they disliked become something they enjoy. Not me…I sure wish I like chunk cheese (great source of protein) or peppers (or a gazillion other veggies). I’m going to keep trying them but so far it didn’t pan out the way I hoped.

Down a pound this morning. It looks like this time around I am only going to average about 1.5# a week. I'd like it to be faster, but I'm not willing to make drastic enough changes, I guess. I had hoped to make Onederland by November but it looks like I'll be a bit short of that at this rate. It's looking close though.
Still hanging around and enjoying all of your reports.
@newcaddy glad you are making good progress.

@birgitkwood and @MermaidPrincessRach thanks for the welcome! I am definitely looking at smaller weight loss goals...can still be daunting though. I actually decided I'm not going to weigh for a while. Really wrap my mind around the fact that it's not all about the number on the scale but about adopting a healthy lifestyle. Looking forward to getting to know everyone.4

Hello everyone, no time for personals today because I'm stressing out. But 'you all' ... have a great weekend coming up, the first of the Fall season.
Thursday Truth ... so, I am struggling with a decision that brings out the 'needs to eat something' frame of mind ... and the problem with that is this ... emotional eating is not satisfied with food, it's satisfied with the emotion being dealt with. And emotions are dealth with by understanding the underlying stressors that are causing the upheaval. The stressors need to be resolved, then the emotional needs will be salved, and the desire to medicate with food will go away. Simple to say, hard to do.
Niki

Niki, I hope you are successful at resolving your stressors1

Thursday truth, most days I am on autopilot as far as diet. I'm bored with it. Today I left the reservation and I am not really sure if my calorie count is right. Went out for Mexican, dangerous, I wanted fajitas. Had half a tortilla all the beef and the borracho beans and assumed similar calories. I feel so guilty. I have such a bizarre pattern of losing where I bounce up and down and up and way down then start over again. I've been going really at the top of my capabilities since late June and I'm tired. I rarely cheat. Tonight was just crazy for me.
Tomorrow camping, high calorie food typically. Trying to make better choices but going to have breakfast tacos Sunday. I can't wait.0 -

Thanks for the reminder as I am suffering with a similar TT except for mine is the consequences of a decision already made and carried out. I am my own worst enemy when it come to such in that my mind is like the instant replay on a major play going over and over examining every aspect which is pointless because it's done. That's usually when I turn to food and go on a free for all which leads to the pity party and the self loathing. BUT it sounds like we've both succeeded at keeping the beast at bay and tomorrow is another day! Hugs!!!3 -
@Nikion901 and @kayfhoward1 Sending you girls cyber hugs and you have company, it must be the week of stressing! Mine is two fold, things that I need to get done and have been procrastinating about and the other is my pain level. Two nights with so little sleep due to my fibro and arthritis has me feeling really dreadful on top of the pain. That makes me want to stuff my pain down, but I got out of bed, did a few little stretches and got a bottle of water to fill my belly. It helped a little. So my wish is that I could get my pain level under control without using pain meds (NSAIDS not narcotics) They are so hard on my system that I try not to use them but it looks like I'm going to have to for a few doses to get the inflammation down. And the struggle is my Thursday truth.
@feellikerain and @readyandwilling2 welcome ladies! looking forward to getting to know you! Don't be shy!
@birgitkwood so proud of you for using your new mantra! I've needed it a lot for the past two days because of my pain level. Last night it was still a big push to get those last steps in but sure as rain (at least here where I live haha) when I was done with them I felt so good to have carried through knowing that my hard earned goal will have a positive effect on the scale soon!
@pneschich Camping, oh my, you are so blessed! Mexican is a hard one for me too. I have to stay away from them for the most part because self control goes right out the window! Remember it's a journey but try to be extra mindful when you are faced with the temptation of high calorie foods and try to have some better options with you. Successful people do what others are not willing to do! You got this buddy! You've come a long way!
@grandmakaye you are always inspiring!
@MermaidPrincessRach I'm missing your posts! What's up lady?

Hi @campfirequeen1 ! I'm here (lurking). It is nice that you noticed my quietness. thanks!
Friday fitness ... hmmm dont know what to do. I dont like walking. Afraid to walk with headphones and stereo. Maybe i will get my hair wet, but probably not. Just kinda stagnant right now. I have the power to change that when i am ready.
@pneschich you have come so far! And very quickly IMO. I am sure you have figured out low cal mex you can make at home so you dont feel deprived. And of course this is a lifestyle change so you have to be able to live with your new menu. I met a lady not long ago who purposely planned a special treat for herself every day. It was okay because she preplanned it and did not have to hide it or feel guilty about it. That is the kind of new lifestyle I want. No guilt. No boredom. Just success.

Hi everyone! I'm new to this group. I have 80 pounds I would like to lose, but I'm splitting it into smaller goals.1
-
@krrobin3727 and other new folks, WELCOME!
@pneschich - for me the secret is KNOWING and accepting that some days will not be ideal. Certainly, going out for Mexican would qualify for me, and I don't think I'd make the relatively healthy choice of fajitas. And camping? Forgeddaboutit! Whenever I went camping this past summer I ate whatever I felt like, and made peace with it. Didn't even track I those days cuz I was "on vacation." I also KNEW that upon my return I'd get back on track with a vengeance, and I did. I can't make this whole food and exercised thing be sustainable over the long haul if I don't allow myself to take breaks now and then. This method allowed me to lose 72 lbs over 6 mos, doo I guess it's working for me. I hope you come to peace, find what works for you, and continue to be as successful as you've already been.
@Nikion901 and @kayfhoward1 - hope you both manage to slay your dragons and don't allow them to derail you. We're all here, rooting for you.
Friday Fitness saw me getting up and going to the gym at the crack of dawn, thx to my new Mantra. Always, always... the first step is the hardest... and the rest just rolls along. Thx again, @campfirequeen12 -
@pneschich - I feel you there, I've been sticking to eating pretty much the same foods but I'm also getting bored of it. This weekend I think I'll spend some time looking for new healthy & low cal recipes and if I find anything good I'll post it here!
Next time you get a craving for Mexican food you could try making fajitas at home - just cut some chicken breasts, peppers, and onions into strips and either grill them on george foreman grill or sautee them in a skillet. Last time I made them I bought a packet of fajita seasoning but I'm sure taco seasoning or similar spices would be fine too. I ate my fajita meat & veggies over some black beans instead of putting it into tortillas but that's just personal preference. Last time I made it they turned out pretty good and it's much easier to estimate the calories when you're making it yourself and knowing what went into it
Friday Fitness - I really need to make more of an effort to get more exercise into my routine and to feel more comfortable about going to the gym. Some days it's already a bit too chilly to go walking outside so I know the treadmills in the gym are going to be a necessity soon. I still plan to walk outside as much as I can, aiming for going 5x per week around my usual route through the neighourhood (about 4 miles). I also want to try adding in some workout videos at home 2-3x per week in addition to the walking... so that's going to be the October goal! I can't believe Sept is over already and I feel like I didn't make as much progress this month as I'd hoped, though I was sick for pretty much a full week. I lost 10 lbs in Sept but don't feel much smaller...ugh. I really want to be able to wear some of my old cute sweaters soon0 -

@chavelitalara I congratulate you for the steps you are taking to eat healthy and live a healthy lifestyle, but you need to get help for your emotional sickness.
While I do appreciate your concern, and I am most grateful for you and finding someone like me, I want to do this on my own. I've lost 30 pounds before and I just want the motivation and support (and maybe an accountabilibuddy?) To get me back on track. I know I have emotional issues: alcoholic family, suicidal and depressed background, but I have never been a fan of therapy. I've read books on the conditions and on how to break the chain and I am battling my own demons.
I've been in a rut - excuse after excuse of working, not having time, or being tired. This week, I'm proud of myself. I exercised Sun, Tue, Wed, Thurs. Today is my other rest day and I have plans to go Saturday and Sunday.
Here's my stats and notes:
Today's workout
9-25
15:55 mile
Glute 60 lbs 5 sets of 5 reps each leg
9-27-16 the park
2.21 mile walk
15:40 mile run
9-28-16 the gym
Elliptical 11 min .86 distance
Row 40 lbs 5 sets of 10 reps
Pulldown 40 lbs 5 sets of 10
Chest press 30 lbs 3 sets of 10
9-29-16 the gym *leg day?
Mile 14:41 (not including my warm-up walk) *hhaayy
Seated leg curl 50 lbs 2 x 10 *holy craaaap
Leg press 40 lbs 3 x 10 *could go heavier
Bike time 20 min distance 4.51 L3
Yesterday, that last day there, I weighed myself, expecting not a gain but maybe maintaining. I had been working out. I hadn't been eating well, but I didn't want to focus completely on that yet, not until I get into working out and the routine.
Two weeks ago, I weighed 204.2.
Yesterday, I weighed 205.6.
I felt so bummed out. Seriously not what I expected whatsoever. Still, I'm going to keep working out as much as possible, and next week, I'm going to try to meticulously count my calories. We'll see how that goes!
Welcome to all of the new people and hello to all of the people who are still here!0 -

Hello everyone! I'm from Australia and I have 104lb total to lose (I actually got out a calculator to check that I'd qualify for this group, lol- metric system here). I've lost so far 18lb so that gives me 86 still to go. I feel. . Just totally daunted by it. It has taken me like 6 months just to lose 18lb. SIGH. I love the idea of putting it into smaller goals! I'm going to put it into 8 chunks, which is 5kg a chunk (11lb approx). And I hope to get to know you guys over the coming months/years (?)3

Here's my Friday Fitness- Anyone heard of an app called Seven? It's got all kinds of different circuit workouts to do at home, doesn't require any equipment. You can even create your own custom circuits. The big motivator for me is it sets it up kinda like a game. The basic idea is to work out every day for 7 months. You get 3 hearts and lose a heart every day you don't complete at least one circuit. Lose all 3, and you start over at 0 days. And you can earn little badges along the way, milestones for extra motivation. I've really been enjoying it so far.9

Friday Fitness ... I added 5 more pushups to the 25 I did yesterday. Yeah! Looking cloely at the grocery store fliers I can access online to decide on my meal plan for the next shopping trip set for Saturday after my flu shot at the doctors Flu shot clinic. Chicken features heavily, and celery ... I have been out of one of my favorite vegetables for most of this week and am so looking forward to restocking that crisp delight.
@Elizabeth2360 - haven't heard from you since your post with the health issue news. Hope you are doing well and that the biopsy came back negative. I have a niece-in-law who got similar news recently and is scheduled for a total hysterctomy next month.
@MermaidPrincessRach --- Reading back, I ran across your description of your dinner of brownies and milk, which had me shaking my head ... but then, the other night my dinner was dried cranberries!
@skinnyjeanzbound - hope you are feeling better. Congrats on the MIL's new marital status, hope she stays happy.
@NewCaddy - bread is my weakness ... I was suckled on it when I was born before my mom's milk came in, and have loved it every since! ... so sad you cannot have it, but can understand fully why that would be so!
@kayfhoward1 - I try never to turn to food anylonger, but that doesn't stop the urge ... I figure it's like cigarette non-smoking ... did it and stopped doing it and will never do it again.
@grandmakaye44 - We will dance a merry jig the day you announce onderland has been won!
@campfirequeen1 - isn't pain fun? NOT! ... Sometimes the only thing one can do is embrace the pain ... give in to the tempo and vibration of it with deep medidation.
@birgitkwood - I like your new mantra, it reminds me of the one my brother had that he always reminded me about when I felt stalled or afraid ... 'just take the first step'.
@pinkstarberry and @pneschich ... it wouldn't be Mexican for me if it didn't have beans and rice, and I use whole grain burrito wraps instead of bread for many of my meals ... makes it feel Mexican even if it's not!
@feellikerain - that 'Seven ap' sounds great, haven't looked at it yet, but know right off that I would not commit to every day ... 5 days a week, yeah, that much. Gonna take a look at it though. Thanks for sharing.
My heavens, I have been very lax in welcoming the new posters, just giving a general welcome and hi since I last welcomed back on 9/18, almost 2 weeks of letting others do the "meet and greet', while I just gave a casual hello to the newbies. Please forgive me ... I didn't mean to ignore you whilst I was caught up in my own little world.
So ... I think these are the names that are new since then ... hello and welcome and I hope you have great successes and small setbacks along your journey to better well being through your weight-loss efforts. ... @renaedar @rebecky27 @chavelitalara @elaineously @sullivad7 @jlolsen516 @kayfhoward1 @ObesityWarrior @Michelleym4 @truegive15 @readyandwilling2 @ObesityWarrior @Bentnotbroken130 @feellikerain @krrobin3727 @jesssiebee1983 ... ok, really hope I haven't missed anyone.
@Niki .... get off that computer, girl! You have kitchen KP waiting!4 -
Walked 13k steps today. Stayed on calorie count. Got a boy and a dog sleeping in the tent. My other boy is fire building ( playing with fire) we are sleeping on the sand. The sky is filled to overflowing with stars. The surf is crashing 30 feet from us ( next high tide 4:30am) if it weren't for the mosquitos it would be perfect but the little *kitten* are hungry for me.
I'm still frustrated with the bouncy way my weight goes and maybe every morning is too often to weigh but it has motivated me . Now it frustrates me! Going to see what it all looks like Monday.
I wish you all could see the stars. I am a blessed man. I have all this and tomorrow I get to kayak out 2 or 3 miles offshore. I love the water, it reminds me that in the grand scheme of things i am very small, that i may hatness this great power and use it or i can let it carry me where it may. I choose to harness it to use its power and understand my will is as strong as the tide. Google high island Texas. That's me, hope the crabs stay off me.2 -
@jesssiebee1983 Welcome to the group! I think it is SO COOL that you checked the conversion of kg to lbs to see if you qualified for this thread. I was curious, so I converted my weight to kg ... 138. I like that number better But then I remember a conversation I had with a friend. Weight is just gravitational pull. Different astrobodies have different gravities and so we would weigh different. FYI, on the moon I'd only weigh 50.5 lbs! Glad you can join us from Australia!
