@Getfitat54 @Stoshew71 It gets down to the mid-20s in Alabama?!! I'll have to revise my preconceptions of the Deep South! I'm in eastern Massachusetts, so winter temps in the 20s are common, but I don't run outside if it drops below 20. I have a college friend from Hilliard, OH, however, who insists that winter running at Zero degrees is a peak experience not to be missed.

Every so often it get's below that for like a day or 2. But most of the time, winters are pretty mild. Bearable to run in.

I'm originally from NJ. Been down here in Alabama for 5 years now. So I know what cold weather and snow is about. I am probably one of the few people in Alabama that knows how to drive in snow. They close up schools and stores the day before if they think they may get 2 inches of snow. smh

I'm looking forward to it once it has fallen, its the headache I'll get from falling snow reflecting my headlamp that I don't relish.
@MNLittleFinn In those conditions, instead of using a headlamp, use a flashlight (or hand carry your headlamp).

I actually love shoveling. It's a great cardio workout. I'll often shovel deep snows even though we have a snowblower.

@kristinegift I cant' wait for your race report!! Get out and kill it!

I just bought a house this past spring, and had the same thoughts so far about raking leaves. Sure, I could just let them decompose where they land, though there is heavy cover that will probably suffocate the grass. But I may as well help keep my lawn alive until I figure out what I'm going to do with it (if I'm going to plant anything at all... something that survives in the shade) next year. Plus I can get a great cardio workout.

This is what it looked like last Sunday after I finished up. Leaves in front of the camera are in an area I did earliest and have had more drop that I didn't go back and rake again. Since Sun., there is a lot more to rake... I might find time to take care of it this weekend for another workout.

As for snow, I like the idea that I can get a good workout. I just want there to be a small enough amount that I don't have to get up early and shovel it before work. As long as I can drive through it to get out of my driveway, that is fine. I can shovel the sidewalk and driveway after work... I'm not a morning person and I'm waking up at 5am already, so an early morning of shoveling snow is a no go.

This head cold of mine started moving down to my chest yesterday and brought mild fatigue along with it. I really wanted to skip my run but seeing Kody when I got home changed my mind. He hasn't been out for a run in a couple of weeks and he's recovered from hunting so I dragged my *kitten* out there.

I left my HR monitor at home and somewhat randomly ran in the neighborhood. Initially figured I'd go 3 to 4 but the more I ran, the better my congestion got so I stretched it out and went 5.5 miles. I think this is first time I've been sick since I started running 19 months ago.

Have any of you heard of 'On Running' shoes? It's a Swiss company. A local running store is having an event where I like to trail run and will have trail shoes you can demo. I've never heard of them but will be checking them out.

Hey, everybody. Just checking in. I have been MIA for the last month or so. I just couldn't keep up with the thread and didn't have much to offer on commentary. A couple of reasons--One, suffering through my right leg injury. And two, dealing with work junk.

Update on the leg: I'm pretty sure I've been dealing with peroneal tendinitis. I did not go to the doctor, so don't have an official diagnosis, but symptoms have been tenderness in the outside of the lower leg, a pulling sensation behind my knee, and some popping/catching/pain feelings on the back side of my ankle joint (on the outside, right behind the nub of bone). I did buy a compression sleeve, as it wasn't getting much better, and that seems to be helping tremendously. It's still not 100% better, but improving.

Work has been crazy. We've got a big project to implement a new system and trying to keep up with my regular job (of three people) plus the implementation work has just been impossible. I stopped taking lunch breaks and have been working late every night. Haven't resorted to working weekends yet...

I did take this past Monday off and used the 4 day weekend (already had Friday off for Veterans Day) to fly down to Corpus Christi to visit my sister. She ran the South Padre Island Marathon. Since she was running that, and I had nothing better to do with my time, I decided to go ahead and do the half. I walked--a lot--but I finished. Total time was something like 2:54. Horrible compared to last year, but I have to start somewhere. This was my first race since my ankle surgery in June, so at least I have a good baseline now and can work on improving.

On the heels of that trip, I decided that I'm no longer giving up my lunch breaks to work. It's the only time I have the opportunity to see the sun on a weekday, so I'm taking it. If I have to work until 7pm every day because of it, so be it. It's not like I'm keeping up with my work as it is...

So, I'm getting back to the gym, hopefully losing the weight I've gained over the last 6 months, and will be running more regularly. I'll try to keep up with the thread the rest of the month, but won't be setting a goal.

I am looking at a couple of 5Ks coming up--one the day after Thanksgiving and one the day before Christmas. Haven't signed up for anything yet, but I think they'd be good additional motivation.

@ceciliaslater I hope your leg continues to improve! Glad you run the HM! That had to feel great to get back out there, even if you didn't do as well as last year.

    11/16: 4 miles
    11/17: 4 miles
    11/18: 4 miles

    My Total/November: 32.75 miles
    Mike's Total: 9 miles

Think I have pretty much confirmed that I am just dealing with some soreness from going back at it so hard after such a long break. Things felt better this morning. Got in a 6 mile bike ride and a bit of dynamic stretching before my run which I am sure helped considerably. I was still pretty slow but faster than yesterday. More importantly, I felt better the whole time than I did yesterday. So much so that I actually kind of wanted to keep going after mile 4. It is probably a good idea to keep it here for a while though. If I can just keep it consistent, I will hit my mileage goal and build up my distance.

There is no real method to my madness, I suppose. I am not following any training plan or anything. I just like to run. I do have some overall goals in mind, but it is really just something in my head as opposed to some set plan. For now, I am trying not to focus too much on speed. This is pretty obvious from my times which average somewhere just under a 13 minute mile. I am working to build distance and endurance. I would like to be at 5 miles per day by the end of the year. At that point, I will start thinking about how to get faster. I'm really just "feeling my way" through it. I would like to run a full marathon some day (I am thinking maybe 2018), and I know that I will probably have to adopt a more regimented approach before that happens. But for now, I am rather more comfortable just winging it. I know many of you follow specific training plans and I wonder, is there anything inherently wrong with the way that I am approaching this?

@greenolivetree Stretching...yes. The dynamic stretches before running are helping a great deal. I could probably benefit from some additional stretching, too. I used to do some yoga a few years back and have been thinking about picking it up again. There are quite a few poses that are complimentary for runners and I think it would be a nice way to kind of wind down in the evening.

@lporter229 I shoot for being in bed by 10 or so. I'll admit though that if I am not actively engaged in some activity then I am likely to start nodding off any time after 8:30 or 9. (It is almost impossible for me to watch a movie any more! LOL) I am usually up around 4:45 or 5 am and out on the bike within 20 minutes of getting out of bed. I kind of like to hit the ground running, so to speak. It's about 6:30 when I leave the house the second time for my run. I am fine as long as I can get close to 7 hours of sleep time. 6 hours or less and I will be fine for my morning work out but then poop out mid day. I also have the advantage of working from home. I just really need to be back in the house by 8 am in case the office phone starts ringing. It is a huge advantage in terms of having time to work out in the morning and I know that I am lucky to have this lifestyle.

    Have a great day everyone!

    Upcoming Race:
12/3 Snowball Run 5K, Kingwood TX

    AND...my ticker won't update again. :(

@ceciliaslater Hope that leg gets better soon. Good luck with work, great to take back your lunch hour!

I'm impressed that you did the half! It's lovely that you got away to Corpus for a visit. I'm not back at it. I still feel broken.

Did you and @greenolivetree send us this cool windy business? My cats love it. I'm not sure about it yet.

@midwesterner85 good night that's a lot of leaves, and a few blisters! You must not have free range dogs or children, because no way you'd ever get a pile that high!

I mulch mine, or dump them in the ravine (on my property).

@Elise4270 - The visit to Corpus was not nearly as relaxing as I'd hoped. Rained the whole time I was down there. The race was like 70+ degrees, 30mph winds, and sprinkling. Not really PR weather, anyway. And we got a flat tire on the way back to Corpus from Padre--in a Jeep with giant mud tires (thankful for the Walmart driver who helped us break the lugnuts loose b/c two were stuck and the stupid sheriffs deputy and border patrol guys were worthless). And I got bitten by a dog (sister's boyfriend's roommate's dog bit my thumb on accident--puncture wound right in the middle joint). Oh, and I lost my sunglasses to the ocean. AND I got patted down and swabbed by security at the airport on my way home. It was a good trip. LOL. Was still good to see my sister and not be at work though.

I'm sorry to hear you're still having problems. Do you have an updated timeline from your doctor? Or just playing it by ear at this point? Sorry, you may have already shared, but I skipped several pages.

    TOTAL: 69/70

Much needed rest day! I've been diligently watching the forecast for tomorrow morning to see if it will be possible to get in a long run between the rain and high winds. I think there might be a short window in the morning that I'll shoot for but I won't go if it's raining (my immune system is already compromised enough at work, I don't want to make myself any more susceptible). I also plan to get in a longer run Thanksgiving morning, so I don't want to do a long run on Sunday but I might have to if the weather doesn't cooperate tomorrow.

Oh that sounds like an awful trip! You have my sympathies!

I'm still playing it by ear, and working with my physical therapist. Walking isn't nearly as hard as it was, still not cleared for running. Although I've toyed with a tenth of a mile uphill gravel segment this week. Not sure if I'll stick with it.

I'll be ready(ish) to go back to work in a few weeks. My cat will miss me. There's talk of a second surgery near spring depending on how I do or don't do, but totally up to me. I may just resign to deal with it. So, It may be a while before I see any PRs. I suppose I can hit reset on those. My walking has gone from 22 min/mile to 18. Haha!

Tldr- getting better slowly. Maybe by spring, I'll be running regularly.
