canadjineh(: I just joined that group the other day and look forward to learning more there for sure. Jamaica though! You lucky gal! That's awesome. How long will you be there? Might I stash away in your suitcase?

Suffer & Bex: no problems running ketones for exercise, but only once you are fat adapted. Prior to that, you can feel pretty weak. Headaches in that case would be from electrolyte imbalance.

Which could be moderated with better water intake?
I did use the restroom and noticed I'm DEFINITELY not as hydrated today as I should be. I haven't eaten any foods that would cause my urine color to be that shade.

I'm going to drink more water and I already know I need more balance in my diet. I tend to shoot straight for protein only whenever I'm hungry and after my last Strong Lifts workout, I don't think that is achieving what I want in my workouts.

ETA: I was planning on lifting today but I think I will do a yoga video at home after I make sure I get my 10k steps.

    Thank you night shifters!

@Terra_Incognita I'm a low carber too (<25g net) but may bump up a bit to around 50g while I am away in Jamaica (headed out Thursday). Are you a member of our Low Carber Daily Forum group? Name seems familiar, sorta. You could always get a Soda Stream and make your own with more natural flavours if you miss it that much.
    Welcome back @rlpomeroy.
Welcome back ripomeroy(: Heya canadjineh. I've recently been using a LCHF(ish) approach and so far it has been working for me. I did notice a slight headache after a week of this... granted, it wasn't after exercise. It probably had to do with me quitting the sodas. As a nightshifter this was really a challenge (for myself anyway) because I could sip on soda all night long and have for many, many years. I've been drinking water and tea a great deal now. I miss that fizzy stuff! I also added a little bit of salt to my food and that helped my headache a bit.

I don't know how ya'll do that intentionally. I usually do it on accident.
I'm pretty sure the last time my mother tried putting the family on a low(er) carb diet, I lost it. I drove to the store and a bought a whole lot of tortillas and went hog wild on cheese quesadillas followed by cheesy potatoes. I lasted a whopping 3 days.

I'm not a low carb guy most of the time but during the peak training season for cycling I end up that way trying to balance energy and waist line. There is a good book out there about calories and weight loss called "The Calorie Myth". Jonathan Bailor is the author. I have a few problems with the book like when he says Ketones are the preferred energy source of the body. If it was, the Creb cycle would produce more ATP with Ketones than glucose. However, overall the book makes some very good points on issues like why cutting fat in our diets hasn't cut heart disease.

"Keto Clarity" by Jimmy Moore is another good one. I think it spends less time trying to sell you on their diet plan and makes the explinations more understandable. I liked that one better but "The Calorie Myth" goes in to more detail for those who like details.

Bex - If you want to go low carb, don't do it they way they tell you to. Just spend one week cutting one thing out of your diet. The next week cut one more thing out of your diet. Ketonix makes a breath analyzer that can tell you how much ketones your running. You keep cutting one thing at a time out of your diet until you get to the ketone level you want. The book Keto Clarity talks more about that.

nightwaljing???? what did you mean, Jennifer?
Bex.... pretty easy to do intentionally for me... I have Celiac disease and it's just so much easier to eat safely if I don't have to find 'substitute foods.' Also way better for my thyroid.
Ketones are the 'preferred energy source' in that our bodies can store large amounts of energy in the form of fat that is stable for long periods and easily accessed, if we aren't constantly stuffing in carbs... The body will do the simplest thing first which is using glycogen, but that doesn't mean it is the healthiest in the long run or even the 'best' way to fuel ourselves. I find Phinney & Volek are great resources for low carb/ketogenic athletic training:
    artandscienceoflowcarb.com/the-art-and-science-of-low-carbohydrate-performance/
Anyhow... we are all different bodies and our experiences will also be different. The old saying n=1, lol. I won't preach, I promise. ;)

Amen to the we are all different. If one diet/lifestyle worked for everyone, all the other plans would be out of business. The key is finding one that works and one that you can live with. I can't do vegan. I make a good second hand vegan though. I only eat things that eat plants.

I've been working slightly different hours recently, getting off at 4:30-5am instead of 3am. Kinda bummed because there are more people at the gym now when I get off work. I got used to having the place to myself. What times do you all hit the gym at?

My schedule tends to be pretty nuts, so it tends to vary. Tbh, though, I haven't been to the gym in probably 6+ weeks.

I hear ya. I used to work 3p to 3a and I would have the place to myself. It was a real treat and I wasn't as self-conscious. When I switched to 7p to 7a, it was more of a challenge. It seems a little harder to trick my brain after 7a when I know I should be sleeping and prepping for my next night shift so to speak.

I don't go to the gym. I bought some stuff like a Bowflex for home and work out at home. Usually at 1 PM if it's weight. 2 PM if it's a ride on the bike.

I have a hard time motivating myself to workout at home. If I go to the gym, It's the only reason I would be there, so I don't get tempted to do other things.

Yes, but you probably look good lifting weights. I look like a dork trying to lift weight. I know a few people that can't get motivated to exercise at home. My brother has about 5 pieces of equipment that have become glorified clothes lines.

I'd love to have a home gym, but I just don't have the space, or the $.

I like that with my night job, they are flexible with the dress code. I can just go to work wearing gym clothes and then I am able to hit the gym right after my shift ends in the morning. Makes the need to go home first to change and get that temptation to skip non-existent.

Yeah. Going home 1st is NOT an option. I don't leave once I get home. :-)

Same. When I worked nights, I'd pack my gym bag and take it to work with me. The only thing that was a drag about that was when it was winter and I'd forget and leave my bag in the car overnight. You have not lived until you've put on a sports bra that's been sitting in 15F temp all night!

Jennifer! Ha ha! I've been there too. I tried wearing my sports bra throughout my shift a few times but didn't like that either.

I work with day walkers now but we get an hour for lunch. We can take it whenever during the day as long as the other dispatcher is here and we can do whatever so I workout in the gym upstairs. I try to get in there by 630am and get it over with lol

@jennifer_417 - LOL. Sitting on a vinyl seat in 0 degree weather because I forgot my sweat pants and didn't want to change back into my uniform was bad enough. I'll pass on the 15 degree sports bra. At least I could try warming up the truck for a little bit to warm the seat up a little.

I'm disappointed in myself for not applying to a job that had a deadline for application. :disappointed:
I'm getting to the point now where I REALLY want out of here. I swear though, if Amazon(or any of their recruiting affiliates) calls me ONE MORE STINKING TIME, I'm going to go on a freaking tirade on the poor soul who is on the other end of that phone.
I've NEVER had a company so desperate to hire me. They called me EVERY DAY FOR 2 WEEKS!
I just don't see the drive being worth while.
I also want to stick it out with this job for a while because (hopefully) my insurance will be paying for the majority of my surgery.

ETA: But once that's done, I'm outta here.
