I think JJ Fad's dancing program would be better for weight loss.

I am a registered dietitian. However, since I disagree with the cleanse, I am sure you will just discredit my degree and license as well.
Second, everyone here is bringing up valid concerns about the J.J. Smith cleanse such as the lack of research supporting it and the cost. If you feel people who disagree with you are closed minded I am not sure what to tell you. Also, if you are so easily offended that people pointing out you don't need to spend money on these products to be successful, but also recognizing that if it has helped you successful great, you need to stop being so sensitive.20 -
Also tammys_130 the field of dietetics is evidenced based, meaning if there is not sufficient research to support something, we don't recommend it. There are no studies supporting J.J. Smith's cleanse so therefore I will not recommend it.7

Funny because I thought forums were for sharing of information. This does not seem to be the case here. Whoever said I should post my personal experience, if you read my post that is exactly what I did. It is my personal experience only and solely my opinions. Sorry but I feel I have a right to that opinion and I did gain something beneficial from her book. I don't care if it was my first post or 100th. That should not make a difference. And to assume I didn't read other posts and insinuate I don't have half a brain... well that shows just how cruel and horrible some people can be. Not that I need to explain myself to any of you (since you will find fault with anything I have to say) but I DO read these forums and I have a bachelors degree from an Ivy League college so I am far from an idiot or half a brain. I educate myself about diet and exercise before I embark on anything and consult with my MD as well. I have also consulted with a nutritionist who highly recommended green smoothies, which was one of the reasons I wanted to incorporate them into my diet. I did not claim to be an expert on anything and was merely offering my own experience of what this book had to offer me since majority have such a hard core negative stance on this that they won't at all have any open mindedness toward anything. The additional need to be judgmental with sarcasm and ridicule because someone's view are different from your own is disgraceful and hurtful.
I did not say I strictly adhered to this cleanse or cleansing in general. I was very clear I did not follow it exactly and benefitted from the overall information I received after reading the book. I have had very good success in becoming fit and still lose about 1 pound a week eating clean and working out. I gathered "toxins" to include parasites, old fecal matter, not digestible processed food ingredients, etc... Any information that I feel is beneficial and successful to my doing so (as this partially was) I was simply trying to express in case any others were interested as I personally love to see what helps others and keep an open mind. I did not expect such a negative and harsh group of individuals to find the need to go about bashing somewhat because I thought this was a "community" where people were helpful and supportive to one another and if they didn't have a decent way of commenting replies they wouldn't bother to. I was wrong in that and will refrain from the forums and posting anymore. I hope you will all please consider how you speak to others and treat others (particularly someone new like myself) in the future. I found your comments to be very hurtful and unnecessary and hope that you consider there is an actual person behind the post. Just because someone's views, opinions or experiences are different from your own or you don't agree with does not make them wrong.
With that I'm done. Sorry I even brought it up but never expected this kind of treatment in return. Now that I see how judgmental and hurtful some are here I will keep to myself and continue to do what's best for me and simply use this app to log my food and exercise. I suppose this forum is best used by those who are members of MFP for a lengthy time and the rest of us who are new have no right to post our experiences or thoughts on anything.
Best of luck to all on your journeys to health and fitness. I sincerely wish more positivity and open mindedness to some of you and success and happiness to all.3 -

All,
With the new year coming up, we're going to have an influx of users asking questions, some of which have been asked before. Please take a moment to review the very first community guideline:1. No Attacks or Insults and No Reciprocation
a) Do not attack, mock, or otherwise insult others. You can respectfully disagree with the message or topic, but you cannot attack the messenger. This includes attacks against the user’s spelling or command of written English, or belittling a user for posting a duplicate topic.
Asking a question that has been asked a million times before is not a violation, but mocking, attacking, or belittling a user or users for asking, posting about a topic, or not having read the million+ topics is a violation.
Some of the most successful members in this community once posted here asking about detoxes, cleanses, or insisted that clean eating, eating six times a day, or intermittent fasting were the key to losing weight. If everyone knew everything about weight loss right away, this site wouldn't be making enough money to feed the cats running batting at the cables and stepping on the keyboards in the IT department.
Hope everyone has a warm and safe holiday,
kgeyser

What do you mean, old fecal matter and not digestible food ingredients? Where in our bodies does this all lurk?
If someone has problems with old fecal matter getting stuck somewhere in their bodies and internal parasites then they need to see a doctor and get appropriate treatment, not drink a smoothie.10 -

The body does not store fecal matter, non digestible foods. If it did, it would be called impaction and VERY serious... too serious for a ridiculous 'cleanse'. You are the only one raging here. If you suspect parasites, go to your doctor instead of fooling around with cleanses.
Of course we are judgmental against necessary and often dangerous practices that have no standing with science.tammys_130 wrote: »Not even worth my responses either. Hilarious. I speak with my ex Dietitian regularly and she finds cleanses and fads laughable. It's judgmental of you to assume there are no professionals that visit this site and offer their time and knowledge. Not only there are professionals (dietitians) there are also scientists from all fields willing to share their time.

Actually there's many here who do have advanced degrees in science, nutrition etc. And then a whole bunch of us who have been very successful with our weight, health and fitness goals. Which is why these forums have such a low tolerance for pseudoscience woo like juicing/detoxes/cleanses etc, especially when said woo is being pushed by someone who's running an MLM gimmick.
But yeah, positive vibes your way as well, and I wish you the best as you work towards your goals!tammys_130 wrote: »Not even worth my responses either. @tammys_130 tone your digestive system? That's a first. As a GI patient I can assure you you can't do that. One of the easiest ways of messing up you digestive system is to avoid solid foods if you don't have a serious GI condition. It will be super fun during it and after reintroducing solid food unless your meaning of toning is horrible diarrhea and cramping.6

I continue to be amazed by your comments even after the moderators post. I don't appreciate being attacked like I personally wrote the book. If any of you actually took the time to read my posts you would see that I did NOT do a cleanse and don't promote cleansing or juicing or fads, etc... For the 4th time, I utilized information from her book to incorporate more greens (in the form of smoothies) in my diet as well as learning about ways to remove food/waste from my body. I consult with my doctor and a nutritionist and both were supportive of my dietary changes, including the smoothies. So stop insinuating things I never said (like I did a cleanse or drink a green smoothie just to release toxins, etc...) and take the time to stop being so critical and read what I actually write. I used the book as a tool, not a sole tool but one of many. You act like your opinions are the only ones that matter.
If your goal is to discourage people from expressing themselves on this forum then you have succeeded in doing so with me. It's not simply a person being sensitive but a matter of respect. Now I am left with a very negative feeling about this app and definitely do not like the so called "community" atmosphere some of you create. I may look to another app to track my food and fitness in because the atmosphere here is too disrespectful and critical.
I really wish some of you would consider there is an actual person behind every post. It truly is sad people treat others this way as if they are right about everything and don't even bother to read what I had said to be a personal experience.
I'm completely done with wasting my time on responding anymore. Some of you have nothing better to do than say thing I didn't say, assume things I didn't do and drill me like I authored the book. So please get off my case and find something better to do with your time. You have done enough damage to me.1 -

If you actually read the comments, the majority of them have to do with what you quoted from the book and that information has no basis in science. People in this community tend to come down hard on fads, woo and misinformation. Would you rather they just let bad information be?
If green smoothies work for you that's great. But wouldn't you rather know that they work for you not because of any claims from a book someone sold you but because they simply help you meet your eating and nutritional goals?10 -
I have to be honest here...
So much of what I thought I knew about "dieting" has been disproved by scientific studies and are generally "diet" myths that keep getting repeated by bloggers, new members, ill informed journalist and some even in the "diet & fitness" areas.
I would have never learned about these myths/broscience until I came on mfp forums. I've even been able to learn from what some call "snarky/mean" posts. One needs to look at WHAT posters are saying and not always HOW they say it. Remember the long time posters see the same new questions day in and day out from newbie's and perhaps they do tend to get a little direct.
Keep looking around in the forums there is a wealth of experience, knowledge and free help.

Ok let's step back.
Tammys_130 I apologize if I said something that offended you. I am glad you found success with the cleanse.
However, if I see bad information, such as cleanses or detoxes remove toxins or jump start metabolism or any other puesdoscience I will comment on it and point that it is incorrect.
There is a big difference between saying, "I found success with this program" and "I found success with this program because it reset my metabolism and the greens cleansed toxins:".

I enjoy incorporating smoothies into my diet. Usually happens when I am working the early shift, because I'm too lazy to get up and cook breakfast. It keeps me feeling full until my first break of the day, plus helps me reach my nutritional targets.
As for the rest, I'm not going there. I get that it's hard to not take it personally when someone suggests that what you believe in is actually not backed with scientific evidence. There is so many amazing people here, who have made my life better by leaps and bounds bringing factual information into the equation. Maybe step away from this thread for a day or two and then reread it (preferably with a Donald Duck accent to remove any perception of tone). It may seem different to you then.7 -
tammys_130 wrote: »I don't appreciate being attacked like I personally wrote the book.
No one has "attacked" you. People are responding to the book. The quotations from it were presumably presented by you for discussion, no? Specifically, as evidence of what the book asserts?you would see that I did NOT do a cleanse
Again, I don't see anyone concerned with what you did or did not do.I utilized information from her book to incorporate more greens (in the form of smoothies) in my diet
And that's fine. I am a huge fan of eating greens, although I am not sure why a smoothie would be needed for this purpose. That said, I enjoy smoothies for breakfast sometimes and mine are largely vegetable-based, with greens. I USE them for a quick breakfast that meets my nutritional goals and tastes good, and INCLUDE them in my diet for that purpose. I have no issues with anyone else doing that, if they also enjoy them -- why would I. I do have issues with the terrible and ridiculous claims made by the author of the book in question (which you helpfully quoted for us), and I am glad others are challenging them and explaining why they are wrong, although I personally just responded to one particularly ridiculous bit. (Not only is toning the digestive system not a thing, but we digest smoothies just like we digest foods we chew and eat rather than drink. In fact, one criticism of the smoothie fad by Thomas Campbell (who I don't entirely agree with on this or on various other things) is that chewing is helpful in signalling the start of the digestion process.)as well as learning about ways to remove food/waste from my body.
See, this is one of the scammy things used by some to promote "cleanses" and I am sorry if you were taken in by it. It's not true that we have lots of difficult to remove waste in our bodies that we must "cleanse" to deal with.
I also often think for some the attraction to "cleanses" or "detoxes" is that they are suffering from constipation, and that really has nothing to do with toxins or the like. Possible you don't get enough fiber, of course, but there are lots of ways to up your fiber (which I think is a good idea for many who have low fiber, not all) besides green smoothies. But again, I'm not at all against smoothies, just "cleansing" and "detox" and false claims.I may look to another app to track my food and fitness in because the atmosphere here is too disrespectful and critical.
The best tracking available is on Cronometer, IMO, although it works best if you mainly eat whole foods, as I do. That's where I mostly track these days when I do. The benefits of MFP is the ability to join groups, make friends and support each other on the Facebook-like page, maybe the blogging if you do it (I don't and find it difficult to search so far), and the forums which have good information as well as bad and are fun and can involve interesting debates. You won't like the latter, though, if you find disagreement to be inherently "hurtful" as it seems. (I am interested that you use the term "hurtful" as I would not and find it to be a quite over-the-top response to disagreement, and we are of similar ages. Back in the late '80s and early '90s when I was in college (NESCAC) and early to mid '90s when I was in law school (Big 10), that was certainly not a term that would have been acceptable to use to respond to debate.I really wish some of you would consider there is an actual person behind every post. It truly is sad people treat others this way as if they are right about everything and don't even bother to read what I had said to be a personal experience.
No one treated YOU negatively. Why do you personalize disagreement with a book you quoted from? That almost seems like an effort to silence contrary opinion. I would hope that's not the intent.17 -
tammys_130 wrote: »Funny because I thought forums were for sharing of information.
About that word "information": Information is supposed to be facts. When someone creates or propagates the fear of imaginary conditions in order to make money, that's not information. Your sharing it isn't sharing information, even if you believe it to be true.
People aren't attacking you. They're attacking the book and its author. In doing so, they've given YOU information. If you're feeling hurt because the book was attacked, you've invested too much emotion in said book (emotions like fear are how the author makes money, btw).13 -

After your body utilizes nutrients from the food you eat, it must dispose of the unused food particles and waste produced by the digestive process. Without proper and complete elimination, undigested food can back up and leave toxins and waste in your body. But thanks to green smoothies, you can get the fiber you need to cleanse your body, tone your digestive system, and eliminate toxins.”
“Although our bodies have the ability to eliminate toxins, it’s when the body gets overloaded with toxins that it stores them in fat cells. Fat cells don’t get broken down very easily, so they literally weigh down the body and make it bigger.”
Excerpts From: Smith, J.J. “10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse.” Atria Books. iBooks.
Just my opinion but think some of you are being a bit too critical. Just because something isn't for you doesn't mean it isn't great for someone else. I came across JJ Smiths book when searching for Green Smoothie recipes, as I wanted to incorporate more of these into my diet. I very loosely followed the plan along with high protein meals as well as shakes (since I drink protein shakes after workouts). She doesn't say you have to strictly do the cleanse and gives information how to modify. The author is a certified nutritionist and explains in great detail the importance of greens in your diet as well as the elimination of foods out of your system. This book is about a lifestyle change, which is key to any success to weight loss and good health. Personally, I found the book to be extremely helpful for more than just some recipes. You can't assume we all have healthy functioning livers and colons, etc... and that our bodies are just going to naturally do all the work for us. For some of us we need to get our bodies to that stage so that we can enjoy that healthy functioning and this book helped me to do that. I did not lose a ton of weight but instead learned how to change what I eat, how it affects me and how to make sure it is eliminated properly. I lose about 1 pound a week. Is it completely because of this book? No, but I credit it with giving me a good basis to start with and educating me as to how to change my lifestyle. To me, that is important. If this or anything else helps someone on the path to better health and weight loss then all the power to them. If you feel it's not for you, then just do you.
Except from a book one must buy. Yeah, legit AF.
Yeah, strong first post, indeed. How about some actual scientific studies? Any bozo can write a book.
And claim to be a "nutritionist" I could be one tomorrow... no make that today.3
