CI<CO is the 'formula' for weight loss, but weight loss and health are linked, yes - but not synonymous.

To a degree this can be true but I find it's often because someone hasn't disclosed a medical condition/disclosed all facts pertinent to their query that results in largely generic but helpful advice. If someone does disclose then the advice is more measured and people are directed to clear anything with their medical professional. But CICO still applies to everyone, medical condition or not, safety (from a medical perspective) to currently lose weight or not.
I think the insinuation people are reckless with advice is largely unfair and untrue, as usual with threads like these, I'd love to be provided with evidence. I find it's often an issue of personal interpretation of tone and intent rather than factual inaccuracy.
Maybe it is personal interpretation of tone, but if that's how people are interpreting it maybe people could consider their phrasing.
I think you're missing the point that CI<CO applies for weight loss, but other factors contribute to health.
I have seen numerous threads where a person asks a medical question and people who clearly from their answers, have no medical knowledge try and give 'advice'.
It's not malicious. As I said, people don't know what they don't know.
Others repeat what educated people have said without the background knowledge.

I've only ever been a little overweight and been using this app on and off for different goals since 2012. I've only looked into the forums in the last few months. I've seen lots of great, measured advice but also a lot of people repeating rhetoric and giving 'advice' on subjects that they really probably are not qualified to comment on.
I mean sure - it's the Internet - anything goes, but they're is an overwhelming attack of sorts to anyone that points out short fallings of forum content/advices. It has a distinct bully like nature to the casual observer.

Tone is a matter of perception on anything written.
But when someone asks a medical question, I always see people direct them back to a health care official. They may give advice on what worked for them or a friend but it's always followed up with "go see your doctor" and/or "but your mileage may vary so talk to a doctor" or "what does your doctor say?" Most people aren't just throwing around medical advice like now n' laters.

Can I just address when people say "I eat what I want" please don't assume...
1. They eat donuts and pizza in unlimited quantities and or everyday
2. How do you know what They want? (Most of the time I'm hungry for a loaded salad or spicy boca chicken burger.)
3. They eat irrespective of a balanced nutritional diet.
Most people, I believe, know what's at the CORE of a healthy diet. I don't feel the need to address this. I guess I give them more credit, perhaps I'm wrong?
Vegetarians aren't told they should eat meat, HFLC aren't told which fats they should avoid. But for some reason if we count calories and don't follow a "named plan" we must be doing it without regard to nutrition.
Almost everyone TRYING to lose weight also tries to improve their overall diet. Are there a few outliers, sure.

For the record I just think that saying eat whatever you want/the only thing that matters is cico is simply over-simplified to the point of being untrue.
Of course technically if you stay under your calorie goal you'll lose weight BUT what you eat (your level of satiety, your energy level, etc) has an immense contribution to how difficult/easy/sustainable it is.
It's on the same level as saying there's no such thing as a plateau/stall...you know perfectly well that all they mean is that their scale has stopped moving and they don't know why...or that muscle doesn't weigh more than fat...don't be ridiculous, its perfectly obvious that people assume you are comparing like volumes.
I think it's difficult to remember after seeing so many of the exact.same.ridiculous.question we forget that it's still new to the person asking it. They truly don't know and if the goal really is to help them then be welcoming and kind not snarky and sarcastic to amuse your friends.7 -

I disagree very much...that was exactly what got me going. I had tried a few different diet plans over the years and always lasted about two weeks because all of them had me going from eating like X to eating like Y overnight or they were super restrictive, etc...I crashed and burned every single time.
When I figured out that I could eat what I was eating, just less, that was a big time start for me...it wasn't the end, just a start and something I was able to work with and evolve my diet from there. It made things very easy and made the transition to eating better much easier.

Oh. She tries. Puts peas in pasta and I'm better than the dogs at picking them out. In some ways it's become less of an issue in the last few years because of her food issues. She can't do gluten, lactose and a bunch of other things so making 2 dinners is pretty much the norm now.0 -

Can't get the peas to stay on the skewer
I'll do corn on the cob, but not off the cob (and creamed is disgusting). I like peppers roasted. And a few others. But no broccoli, cauliflower (she turns them into rice or potato substitute) and not a lot else. Raw peas and carrots are my staple so I get 2 servings of each most days.1 -

She hides zucchini in chocolate cake. I've not not eaten it once.1 -

Weight loss vs health are two different things and the goals of people that come here are typically just to lose weight...they don't care how it's done just get that number down....they are on silly "diets" or think they can only eat certain types of foods and that treats are not allowed...they crash and burn and yo yo (speaking from experience)
So we tell them log your food....eat what you want with in that goal and you will lose weight you don't have to give up pizza and burgers...
Then you know what happens...about 10% have that light bulb moment and get that weight loss shouldn't be the ultimate goal that it can be about getting healthy too...speaking from experience.8 -
Silliness about my eating habits aside, @ThatUserNameIsAllReadyTaken where has someone insisted people eat junk. I've never seen it, just that you do not have to cut it out completely if you don't want to.6

And only one bowl of ice cream and no other food, at that When I eat ice cream it comes in at around 200 calories. Why on earth would I not eat the rest of my allotted calories for that day?

Really? First off, nobody says eat however much you want...I think whatever you want is pretty clear. From there a little common sense is in order...if someone can't manage that, that's on them...it's not on the people saying, "eat what you want within your calories"...if people actually take that to mean, "ok...I'll just eat a tub of ice cream and nothing else and starve...well, we're into natural selection territory right there.
I've always taken it to mean eat what you're eating, just less...it's pretty easy to start there and work on incremental changes.
And yeah...I had a major soda problem...like 3-6 per day. I was able to drink soda and just tell myself less...and continue to cut back until it wasn't a problem anymore.11 -

Some of us discovered 100 calorie ice creams and we get some protein in along with plenty of calories left over for the rest of the day:)!
