Non friendly females in the gym.

I think society as a whole is becoming less friendly. People now have buds in their ears and their noses in social media ~ real conversation is becoming a thing of the past.6

Middle of a set? Talking? Never.
Isn't that one of the first rules of gym etiquette?
It IS but apparently not everyone has gotten the memo. I have 2 different old men who come in and talk to me while I am squatting. Now if I see them coming out of the corner of my eye I don't start a new set until after our chat and they leave.
plug in the ipod, avoid all eye contact.
I once had a lady start talking to me while I was in the middle of a set and I didn't even acknowledge her presence. I looked straight ahead and made zero eye contact, even with her standing 3 feet away.
frankly, it can be dangerous to be disturbed if you're lifting heavy and interrupted.
After the set is over, that's different5 -
I'm friendly but if the ear pods are in my ears and I'm sweating, then I went to the gym to workout. I don't think women are unfriendly at the gym. I think they might just be focused on exercising.9

Yeah, that's a given.
Yes I assumed it was a universal rule. However not everybody follows it. I ignore people if they speak to me while I'm in the middle of a set. So I guess I probably would look unfriendly to them.0 -

I agree and always have headphones in, but when they are standing right there next to me as I am squatting heavy I get super uncomfortable and have to stop. They always make the same "do you want me to help you with that?" joke.
you're too nice
once or twice with that, maybe
after that..... I wouldn't be so nice anymore3 -

you wouldn't look unfriendly to me; instead, you would look dedicated.

The one day I apparently looked very pissed and the one guy turned around and didn't enter the weight room and then said something to me a few days later. I simply said "I am very focused when I am here". Hasn't completely stopped him though.
And too nice is an understatement
here ya' go !

I don't go to the gym to talk. Talking is done in other places, like a coffee house or bar or movie theatre.
Why can't you make friends and talk to peole anywhere? I don't go to the gym but I am happy to talk to people anywhere. It makes the time go quicker and you might learn something even
Apparently some people in this thread already know it all and there social circle is at maximum capacity.
:laugh:1 -
I train at home alone! If someone comes to my gym when I'm training, mmmm they're asking for trouble!
All my concentration is on the work i do, maybe i won't mind a chit chat but only after my work is done. Assuming most others feel that way too.3 -
There's no time for talking in the dojo, there is only work.4

In the old days, people had their noses in a newspaper. (Anybody in here remember what those were?). The more things change, the more they stay the same.8 -

On that note, I really wish people would stop hanging out at the bottoms of hills in ski trails. Especially ones with blind corners. Seriously not amused.1 -
Why not? Because you dislike one more than the other?10

Omfg really? I would have expected that to be a common sense thing

I've never been approached while at the gym, it's probably the resting b face I have lmao
Only guys who talk to me are my trainer and the staff- love em all0 -
Well I, personally, hate small talk and dislike strangers talking to me. Gyms are no exception.
If you want to be social at a gym, there's nothing wrong with that, but I think quite a few people have already made it clear that they DON'T want to talk and be social at a gym. That's the opinion of the majority of people at the gym (apparently, since if that isn't the case, you wouldn't have written such a post). And I think it's common courtesy to respect that and not bother people who obviously don't look interested in socially interacting with you.
And not sure why the post is directly specifically at females. Is the goal to be social? Or to meet girls? If it's to be social, it seems it's mostly guys commenting on this post that are saying they want to be social, so you guys can be social with each other. What's the problem?8 -

I will say hi or whatever on occasion but im not there to chit chat.3
-
By the sounds of many people here, it seems that the world is a much colder place than it used to be.3
-
I own this tank top in two colors.
I did not read the last pages, but everyone has their own time, their own reasons, their own ways they go about getting their workouts done and anything else in life for that matter. Chit chatting for me is reserved for socializing outside of the gym.
10 -
A simple hello is no problem. I do that everywhere I go. But I imagine that if I went to the gym again to workout, instead of going on my machine and lifting at home, I would say hi there too. Be pleasant. Try my best not to fart in your direction. But I would not have time for chit chatting there. And that chit chatting at the gym would be a distraction from me getting my job done at the gym. I'm one of those people who do better without a "gym partner" because I've tried that before. They flake, be late, make excuses. I don't. And then I would need to hightail it outta there, to get some other things done for the day.1
-
Iv been going to the gym for years. Just my opinion but ladies just don't seem to be very friendly. Maybe it's just me!
I know we are there to workout but a casual chat would be nice.
So because they don't want to chat with you they are not friendly? What a weird statement.
They could well be the greatest most wonderful human beings in the world, getting on with their workout and life as they want it and they get a nasty label because the OP feels that they should be 'nice' to him.
Sorry really really weird11 -
At my gym I have become friends with several people, others I just say good morning or hi or whatever. The old guys like to chat a while and the women sometimes as for advice or offer it. Some just smile in recognition. Very few people don't talk at all. But then I live in arguably the friendliest place in the UK lol.1

Most are probably gun shy as others have pointed out due to pushy males. Others are just cuunts. But some may be just shy, self conscious, or just plain unobservant. I am. I have been called rude, a total B, ant my sister in law called me a cuunt once because apparently someone had been talking to me and I NEVER NOTICED! I swear I do not have the "female" gene that allows us to multitask. I get too focused and tune out the world. You have to stand in front of me and snap your fingers in my face.2
-
I don't like to chat with people at the gym. I'm just trying to get a quick run in before class, what do you want from me? It doesn't help that I am literally struggling to breathe here, please don't small talk me.
To be honest though, I'm off put by people talking to me anywhere. I'm just trying to buy groceries or drink my coffee or cross the street, leave me alone. Thanks.0
