WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR MARCH 2017

Been tracking on MFP for almost a month and down 8# thanks to eating low carb. Isn't it bad enough getting older, then you have to cut back on all the "fun" things to eat? I don't think I do very well with goals, so I don't have a list. The one thing I need to accomplish, besides the obvious 40# weight loss, is to make healthier eating choices. Early to bed tonight. I've had an upset stomach all day and am tired. Hope I'm not coming down with something. Was a bit late getting into work this morning, as I had a routine mammogram at the hospital. Opened the front door into the lobby of the building and all I could smell was pot. Wished they would smoke that s**t some place else.
Good news today - my daughter got engaged. I knew it was coming because her fiancé pulled me aside at new year's and told me he was going to propose. He finally got the ring and gave it to her last night. Yippee! I like this guy, and he is such a good match for my daughter.
Congratulations on all the new babies. So glad Olivia & Mia got to go home today.
Hugs to all

So ... nature called and it appears we can call it a night. I won't let him off the hook for this though! Thanks for the prayers and well wishes. Much appreciated!5

Call me crazy but I love to see other people happy and succeeding .
Good Evening My Dear Friends,
Janet#2, is your DD married to a much older man? How can she have a step “granddaughter”??? That would make you a great grandmother and I know you are too young for that! At any rate, Mia is beautiful and I hope she will get to go home soon. Where do they live?
Lois, I hope you get full services back soon. Also hope you have a safe trip to Boston. There’s a lot of snow out there.
Sarah, it sounds like you are a very good and caring manager. A kind word from the boss can go a long way in productive work. I’ m glad you are liking your wearever pan.
Penny, so good to hear from you. I do hope it calms down and you can make time to take care of yourself. We miss you.
KarenVA, so happy Olivia got to go home and what a cute picture. Love her hat!!!
Kelly, have a safe trip to Texas and get tons of pictures to share.
Mary, you are gonna fat burn away to nothin’. I’m so jealous but then I don’t put in that work. Congrats on a great job.
Pip, Floyd was sooooooooooo cute. I just love all the babies on here.
Rita, what a poor pup has to go through to just pee. Gosh I don’t miss that stuff. (snow)
Katla, I sure hope you don’t have a flood. Best to be prepared as much as possible. Please keep us posted.
Toni, I haven’t worn a dress in over 10 years either. I had to have one for a ceremony I was in at the Moose convention. I was so excited to find that one for only $18 rather than spending $75 or more on something I’d rarely if ever wear again.
MicheleNC, welcome back even though we know where you’d rather be.
Janet#2, Mia is just precious. Glad she is at home.
Re, you have done great with the weight loss. I’d be upset if you weren’t happy with it. Just keep up the great work!!! And workouts.
Beth, I hope you didn’t have to go back to the hospital. And hope you get to rest and de-stress.
Rachel, welcome. This is a great place for support and information so come often. You are wise to start with baby steps as you can always add more as you go.
to any Newbies. Come often and join in the chat. This thing works!! Please sign your post with what you want to be called. It makes it easier for us to respond to you. Also a location is great, be it specific or general. We are happy to have you join us.
It’s in the 40’s today but the strong winds are keeping it feeling really cold. I have a social function at the Moose tonight so I’ll bundle up. I’m home from the Moose and ready for bed. I hope you are all safe and warm and don’t have much more snow to have to shovel.
Sending love, good thoughts and sunshine to all of you.
I Love you

Becca: Congrats on the wt loss. Way to go!
Joyce: To answer your ?: Yes, the schools in our area have been closed yesterday & today due to the heavy snowfall. I teach at a district about 45 min drive SE of where we live. They usually get far less snow than we do at home, but actually got hit as bad (or maybe even worse) during this storm. So they actually had it on the news last night that they would be closed today. The district in which we live, though, is where my hubby works. Usually he has to go in to plow early (usually starts at 7, but goes to plow about 4 am) before they've made the decision about delaying or closing for the day. If they do close, he gets to go home after they finish plowing. There've been times, though, that he didn't finish until late in the afternoon because it was bad & took so long. There are 5 different schools plus the bus garage & maintenance garage parking lots. 2 of them are in outskirts of the district - rural area & pretty large geographic area, covering a few different towns. One of them is close to wear we live (in a town at the outter edge of the district).
Anyway, yesterday it hadn't gotten bad out yet in the morning so he hadn't left for work yet when they announced the snow day. But then about 3 pm, he got a call that the superintendent was determined to have school open today so she wanted the guys to go in by 5 pm & plow what had fallen so far & then again early this morning. Really annoyed me since she could've decided that earlier in the day for one - so they weren't still doing it after dark & needing to drive in it when it got even worse out. Also actually had a state of emergency telling people to not be on the roads (guess she didn't care). So he went about 4 pm & took him over 1/2 hr just to drive there when usually only takes about 8 min. Then he had to take the district plow truck around to different places to plow. I think there are 2 other guys that do it, too & they split it up. He didn't finish plowing his last place at the elem. school near us until after 8 pm. At least he was able to just bring their truck home & do our driveway too & keep it here overnight.
This morning, he had to go in really early (again because she wanted to still have school today), but she ended up closing again by about 6 am. REALLY?! She couldn't have known that sooner? Most other schools around us decided that last night. Oh well - at least he got to come home again after & wasn't quite as bad out. He makes overtime pay for time beyond normal workday, but I'd trade it for him not having to do it. Especially when he had to risk his own safety driving in really bad weather to go there. Not worth it. At least it's the last yr - he's retiring this summer.
Our schools do close if it's bad out or delay 2 hrs if expected to improve, but it takes a lot. Definitely not as soon as there's "any hint of snow" as you said. If that was the case, they'd be closed most of the winter here. LOL
Since I teach at a different district quite a ways away & in a city where they don't get nearly as much snow as at home & they also don't have parts of the district in "backwoods" areas like here, I've often had to drive to school in a blizzard at least part of the way since they weren't closed. That stinks. Also been depressing when I leave home with still 3 ft of snow & get to work where there's grass already in the spring.
It's still been snowing on & off all day - not as bad as before, though. So pretty sure there will be school both places tomorrow - maybe a delay at most if keeps snowing overnight. Pretty sure hubby will be going in early to plow, though. Will be so glad when winter's done for the yr. Saw my 1st robin in the yard today. On a snowblowed path in the yard, next to deep snow. It was probably wondering where the H spring was. Don't usually see them until it's definitely spring.
Fortunately it wasn't snowing too badly when we went to the funeral earlier this evening & just starting to get dark on way home when snowing more. That was an emotional time, of course, & gave me a headache. I get motion sick easily so I drove (usually do) & felt really nauseous by the time we got home, though. Funeral also upsetting to me cuz I lost my Mom less than a yr ago, so it brought back lots of emotion about that, too. Trying to relax watching tv before getting to bed. Need to soon & hope can sleep. Being on the computer now really isn't gonna help. Oh well.
Goodnight all.

Hello Everyone
My goal for March is to lose 3 lbs more. I try to lose 1 lb a week but have set back here and there. My goal is not to belittle myself if I don't make it but it motivates me to continue. As long as I'm not gaining is a plus. But I like how my clothes are fitting3 -

I drove Jake halfway to the airport this afternoon. He will stay in a hotel tonight and catch a very early morning shuttle bus to get to the airport in time for his 7 AM flight...so the pets and I are at home without him for a few days. He has been very excited about the trip. He spent two weeks packing and then at 11 AM changed his mind and repacked everything in different bags.
/Beth, when I had my back surgery, they wouldn't let me leave the hospital until I was urinating on my own. They did an ultrasound of my bladder to make sure it was emptying rather than relying on what I told them. And they sent me home with some pills to make sure my bladder would continue to empty for a few days. Glad things worked out for your hubby.

Well... at least I'm tracking. Strange day yesterday. Felt off kilter all day. Late nite binge. Ice cream, cookies, cream cheese. Shaking it off.
Long day today. Started with an eye exam - monitoring the pressure in my eyes. I have narrow angles causing high pressure in my eyes. I'm using eye drops every night. Hoping to keep the pressure down and ward off glaucoma. Today... we measured the pressure again (20 & 21) and the angles of my eyes. The narrow angles have become more narrow. 4 being open. 1 being closed. Mine are rated a 2. The angle is a little canal at the outer edge of your iris. It's the drain canal for fluids in your eye. If it closes - the fluid can't drain and creates high pressure in your eye - leading to glaucoma and possible loss of some vision. I can have a iridotomy - laser surgery - to make a tiny hole in the iris to let fluid flow more freely. I have a consult with a doctor next week to determine if laser surgery is recommended. Doc said 5 years ago - this treatment wasn't yet invented. I don't have any symptoms. And likely won't until it's critical. Then it becomes an emergency.
I also have thick corneas which can throw off the pressure numbers anyway. But my eyes have been tested inside and out. I've got all the colorful pictures to show for it. I remember feeling... yet another doctor telling me a body part is too thick. ;-)
Folks... Be sure to get your eyes examined regularly. Early detection...

Lenora, why are you lurking.
Still freezing but maybe I am getting used to winter again??? But I don't think it got this cold all winter which is unusual for this area. But every year we have been getting warmer and warmer. Global warming?

cpopa16: You are now a member. You joined by posting. Let us know about you. Where are you from?
Sue in WA: Thanks for your good wishes. We are in a tidewater area, across the river & about seven miles from the Horse Expo Facility as the bird flies. It is about 39 miles by road. I'm watching the water and it is still at a relatively safe level. It is 2.2' and rising for the next 20 minutes or so. We're beside the Columbia River, about 64 miles inland from Astoria on the coast. We have an emergency plan in mind if things get scary and FEMA flood insurance. I doubt we will need to use the plan or the flood insurance but I'm keeping my fingers crossed just the same.
Rachel: Welcome!
Shari from IL: Welcome to a great group. My daughter, her husband & children live in IL. :flowerforyou:

DH is reading in the other room and I plan to join him. I hope I can find something fun to watch on TV so that I can sit and knit while I watch. I'm trying to finish a scarf for one of the grand kids. They have snow.

I too had an eye exam today, I have macular degeneration which the doctor checks every six months. It does continuously progress but at least its a slow progression. I do take daily meds to slow it down as much as possible. The doctor will call me tomorrow with the results of today's colorful pictures

LOL - Katla, you Meanie! Maligning that poor innocent candy... I mean I am the one that insists on eating it, even when I don't have the calorie budget...
Well, Girls, I didn't stop at the gym, at all.. DH didn't call when he normally does, and since he was sick, I was a bit worried and just came straight home.
All I can say is, thank God I didn't eat much during the day, today - or I certainly would have been over goal, again. *sighs*
DH was just not willing to expend the energy to get to his phone... He is all right - he ate some soup and he is sleeping, again.
Goodnight, Ladies!
Hugs for Everybody!

Heather UK – The patties were good TY I love seafood but due to > cholesterol I rarely have shrimp anymore :-( I also love winter squashes. Garlic is part of my base seasonings, along with onion, celery, and cumin.
Hope your boiler is fixed.
Chrisi n MA – Good luck with the PB! My son dispatches for a company that picks up from pharmacies and delivers medications to facilities for many states, so I understand your work issues.
Kelly – Congratulations grandma! Look forward to more baby pics.
Sarah – Take a few deep breaths, exhale slowly. Our minds can be our worst enemies. Try relax and not worry til you know if there is anything to worry over. Hope all will be well with Doctor visit.
NYKaren – Prayers for your daughter and family.
Katla - Love winter squashes and do not add sugar or syrup, but do add 1 tsp butter and salt ( I require 400mg sodium/day!) We also roast cut up squash and put chunks in soups or stir fries. Sorry you are under the weather. Tylenol, fluids and rest! Hope the temp. is short lived.
Lanette – I was coming home from work at approx.7:30 am when I slipped on my steps. I try not go out on the ice anymore. :-) Is there a link for the personality test you are talking about?
Beth – Hope your trip to/from hospital was uneventful. Prayers for Hubby and surgery.
Becky- Nice benefit that your Hubby can plow your drive with big plow! We do not take April vacation days to compensate for snow days; what they do is add days to end of year and if too many may add a Saturday school day.
You do have your hands full. What a blessing, you and Hubby were able to take in your niece as your daughter.
Denise – My sister does well losing with swimming as her exercise, hope it worked well for you.
DJ – What a great attitude! ….”So far ahead ….. count my blessings!”
Joyce – They say a pacer is not the answer because it is a pb. with ANS (Dysautonomia); I asked that ? being an old cardiac/respiratory/emergency RN. The musical sounds like fun.
Janet – Prayers that Mia will be able to come off O2 soon. Love her pic. :-)
Son did shovel a “small” path to car in case I go out. The Plow guy has been by 2x's so driveway is clear. It is snowing lightly right now, I wonder what morning will be like? I need a few groceries: tomatoes/cukes/lettuces/pears/plums etc. I had asked son to get these when he was out earlier but what I got was a Wendy's chicken patty with lettuce and tomato on it.
Well, I still have 4 pages to catch up on but will take a break for now. Stay warm stay safe.
Thank You for the welcomes and warm wishes.
Mae in Maine2 -
Pam- Thanks for the information. Always open to suggestions.
Sarah- Email isn't something we can use for most of our staff. It would be great if our Director would do more personal recognition. Working on it.
Karen in Virginia - Doing a happy dance to celebrate Olivia going home.
I will try to put some photos loaded on the computer so I can share. DH still hates them but I have been getting lots of compliments on them.
KJ - Happy cuddling with Joaquin.
Becky - It is always sad to lose someone to the demon drugs. I really hope that her kids can stay together.
Janetr - Such good new that Princess Mia went home today.
Re - Those M&Ms are very tricky. I know I have had more than one run in with them. It sounds like you lost your 55lbs in a very sensible way that you will be able to maintain.
Beth - I'm so glad that your DH's surgery was successful. You have to forgive him for not being honest, he's a man and he wanted to go home.
Paula - Congratulations to your daughter. It's a nice bonus that you like the guy.
Planning on having my regular dessert on either Sunday or Monday to celebrate our anniversary. I think we are going for Billie Miner pie at the Keg. I've never tasted it but quite a few people have raved about it. It better be worth the wait. I really need to get some No Sugar cookies, etc. baked so I can pull them out when the craving hits. Also time to bake some bread.
Got the Secrets Quiz done for work. The ones who were working today were puzzling over it on their breaks. Some of the secrets are funny. I hope they enjoy it. I work on Friday so have to pull together my green outfit. I am excited to see what Justine has done for the cake. I will be foregoing it though. It is really hard at times. I have discovered over time that I have no will power so extra hard for me.
My sweet Harmony is coming tomorrow. I am sure she will bring some of her "Babies" with her. I am hoping that "Pumpkin" doesn't come, that is one creepy looking doll but Harmony tells me she is a great baby sitter. Lol.
-Sharon in Lethbridge ( white stuff is gone now we have mud)1 -
Katla – Hope you make it through the flood period unscathed.
Penny – Like your 'Extra victory'
Beth – Glad Hubby feels better after this surgery. The Nurse/tech should have seen that he urinated and measured his output -status post surgery (seen by doing a bladder scan). Hope he does not have complications.
Paula – congrats on daughters engagement, especially to a guy you like! In our state it is illegal to smoke (anything) in public places and within so many feet (not sure how many) of public buildings. Hospital employees walk up to a bus port about 200 ft from hospital in order to smoke. You see them out there even in extreme weather!
Ginger – They do lens transplants for glaucoma with good results. Declining vision can be frustrating.
Janetr – My mom had Macular Degen. and treated it for years. The eye specialist told her to have all her children do eye exercises and checks along with special vitamins to aid in eye health because M.D. runs in families. Do you have siblings and/or children? Let them know.
Congrats to the babies coming home!
3AM and going to try and go to sleep. Everyone stay safe.

I had a big scare yesterday.
A film crew from ITN is in town. (ITN does news and stuff. Our Brits will know of them.) They came with a shopping list of things they intended to film. My husband tried to explain to them that in an extreme place like this, you can't always get what you want. You have to be flexible and make the most of the opportunities, even if they don't appear likely to offer that footage of a polar bear on sea ice under a clear blue sky. They h'mmd and hawed and just didn't get it.
So yesterday they had planned to take a boat a couple hours north to a spectacular fjord where they knew they would be able to film an old trapper's hut (no doubt hoping they'd also find polar bears and blue whales). But it was snowing and visibility was poor. My husband tried to convince them they should cut the trip short and visit something worth filming but closer to town. But no, they insisted. It had to be Tempelfjorden. So off they went at 9 am.
I went about my everyday business, correcting student assignments and editing and jogging and writing to you ladies... At 4:30 my husband sent a text message saying he would be late. They'd run into heavy seas and people were seasick. I filed that information away and kept working until 6 pm, when I started to wonder. Hubby and I had been invited out to dinner at 7 pm and if he didn't get home soon, we'd be late. I sent him a text message asking for an update. No reply.
At 6:30 I called his cell phone and the call didn't go through. Coverage isn't great out on the fjord (as Heather can attest), but I figured if he'd been able to send a text message 1½ hours earlier, they ought to have been back in range. At 7 pm I called again, and still couldn't get through. By now we are late for that dinner. And I am beginning to envision capsizing boats...
At that point I decided to call the Governor's office and ask if they'd had any distress calls from the boat. (For newbies, in Svalbard where I live, the Governor's office is also the police station and handles search and rescue operations.) So I called and they hadn't heard anything. The woman on the emergency line took down all the information I could provide and said she'd look into it. I hung up, took the binoculars and looked through the gathering gloom out over the fjord, but no sign of any boat.
I went back to my computer and used a research article I was editing to drive anxious thought from my mind. Fifteen minutes later my phone rang and it was my husband. They'd just come into our local fjord and he had "spoken with the Governor", so apparently she had been in touch with them. He had also called our hosts to let them know we would be late. He finally got home at 8 pm.
Turns out they had encountered 4-5-meter waves as soon as they got out into the main fjord. The boat was covered, so they didn't get wet, but it was rough going, and they had to hold on constantly or they would be tossed around, bruised and battered. The captain and my husband hadn't suffered from seasickness but the poor ITN crew turned green. They were proper gentlemen, though, and managed to make it out onto the deck to throw up. Usually.
On the bright side, maybe they'll listen to my husband next time he says the weather isn't optimal and suggests an alternative excursion.
/Penny, infinitely relieved at the North Pole8 -

Need to go back and catch up, but I woke up happy this morning and wanted to share. I was another 2 pounds down yesterday at the end of my ninth week for a total of 33.5 pounds. The loss is settling into the 2 pounds per week that I wanted and I have reached the point that I am walking 10,000 steps every day. It is the start of the 10th week and I am as happy with my MFP regime as I was when I started. I really think this is the time that I am going to make my goal and keep it off. This is in large part thanks to MFP and all the wonderful support.

I had a talk with him last night ,because he texted me and said it would be questionable that I would be going to Florida in Dec..
I came home and said . you have had enough time to figure out what the he*l you want. Make a decision .. *kitten* or get off the pot I do not deserve to be jerked around.. you dont want to spend time with me, go on vacation with me and avoid me at all cost.. so make a decision!!! or I will..3 -
Good Morning Everyone
I am so glad to be alive and know that I'm going to manage my eating today. I've learned that it's a lot of what you set your mind to. Ok Everyone we can do this!!!2 -
Allie here's something to ponder. How do you feel about yourself when you are with Tom? Does your self esteem feel fabulous or do you feel bad often. Sometimes, we give other people power over ourselves by letting them decide if they want to be with us or not, forgetting the most important person in that equation - us. Perhaps based on your experience with this person, you could give some thought to deciding what is best for you. Remember, people can change, but they have to work at it, it is not a matter of just saying they will change. Do you see tangible evidence of improvement by Tom? I understand how complex relationships are and it is not easy to just leave and I would never tell you what to do. I would simply offer that you put yourself first and see what happens. You deserve to be treated like you are the most awesome person...because you are!

Counting my blessings today along with my calories. Spending the day with a former student who is now in college to become a music teacher! That is something to treasure also, responsibilities of selecting and interviewing candidates for a new orchestra teacher (for a retiring colleague) has just landed on my lap--I knew it would, just have to strategize and not punish myself over the stress this will cause me. I will figure it out, put on my big girl pants and hope that an amazing candidate walks through our doors and will take the job. It means late days and having to meet with some folks in my dept. that are less than easy to be with-gotta make sure to have protein snacks and get in the exercise no matter how battered I feel!!!

Good morning Ladies!
Survived the latest blizzard. I was one of a handful who went to work and they closed the office after 11am. I trekked to my friends' home and worked for the rest of the day remotely. Why they just didn't have us work remotely from home is just stupid and uncaring. Spent a most pleasant evening with my friends, helped shovel out the cars when the storm abated about 7 pm. The snow drifted between the cars and I was navigating thru knee high drifts. Shoveling constituted my exercise for the day and they eat healthy so I was able to stick to my plan. Everything was clear, the weather and the roads in the morning. Massachusetts has mastered the art of snow removal. Bring on Spring!
Regarding M&M's and binging...I seem to recall an evening when I devoured a entire 3/4 lb. bag. Talk about a binge!! I confessed and moved on.
So happy the babies are doing so well. They are all so beautiful.
I have been invited to 3 food related social events, tonight, tomorrow and Saturday. Give me strength! I am back down to my low weight, after having mysteriously gained earlier in the week and would love to get to an all time low. I was losing consistently for the past 3 months until this week and I haven't changed my eating or exercise pattern. Oh the mysterious body. I will have to plan carefully or super glue my mouth shut.
Gotta scoot.
Everyone have a wonderful day.
