Good morning Ladies!
I'm off to visit Mom in NJ this morning. Jake, the now eldery rescue dog, has no concept of sleeping in later on the weekend and woke me up at 4:30am as if it were a work day. It has allowed me to catch up with all of you though.
Worked late yesterday because we are short staffed and had to rush home and then rush to book club. Once again resisted the wine but did partake of some cake, mixed nuts and fruit. I was within my maintenance calorie budget but still about 350 calories over my normal daily intake. I expected a gain, especially after eating the salted nuts but was thrilled to see I actually did maintain. I had wanted to go away as low as possible because I typically gain a few pounds on these trips. I guess maintenance really does work!
When I got home from book club I prepared my food for the trip: tuna mixed with tzachi, 1/2 wrap, 2 leftover spring rolls, 2 hard boiled eggs, baby carrots, tzachi to dip them in, mini rice cakes, dried figs proportioned out, water and gum. This is for the trip down and back. Hopefully I will not gain too much and have it all off by Thursday. We'll see. I find the key to successfully losing is to pre plan.
Time to go. Love and hugs to every.

Good morning!
Cheri – you are doing so well!! I remember the days before Meno where I’d stay “on plan” and the scale wouldn’t move or even go up a little then boom, a big drop – would happen each month it seems. Still, it would just about derail me. And, the drop would often happen after a big calorie intake (probably fueled by hormones) …. Perhaps I was able to trick my body into thinking – no need to hold on to weight, no threat of famine so let it go?
Leigh – regarding the eye pressure – is that glaucoma? If so, we folks are WA state can sell you plenty of cannabis which is rumored to help with that, lol. I don’t know if it does or not, but it used to be the joke that if the police caught a person with some they need to say it’s medicine for glaucoma. My sis is on the lifetime drops. Yes, it’s the pits having to see more doctors as we age! I’m taking pains now to find some a LOT younger than myself so I don’t outlive them. The trick is getting them to stick around – they seem to migrate to higher population areas once they get a few years under their belts.
Mary - hope you are doing better. Can't remember if I mentioned - vitamin E oil has worked well for me in stopping itching from hives and rashes, I picked up a bottle at Walmart several years ago.
Becca – I have been over that Astoria bridge once in my life, it was years ago and I think I had my eyes closed most of the time – DH was driving of course. Glad your son had a good checkup at the doctor! The Navy will be lucky to get him – does he know what he’ll be specializing in yet?
Kelly – Make sure you smooch Joaquin for us… won’t be long now! So cute that he strokes/pets his own hair. It is so neat that activity – like the long walks and the sandbox, for example - plays such a big part in the kids you care for! What a great routine for them to get into.
Katla – good luck with Arrow this afternoon. Yes, he is a great teacher for you. I love the smell and sounds of horses, by the way. We had a lot of ponies growing up – I remember it well.
Carol – your grandkids are so cute in their swimming gear! Your comment about antiques – yes, with more of us decluttering, I do wonder who will be there to appreciate and use our antique furniture and jewelry. What I love about old furniture is that is so well-made and practical. I wouldn’t pay half a million $ for a chair that George Washington sat in, but for a nice bureau or chest – the el cheapo particle board ones cost just as much as a sturdy one a person can find at an antique store it seems. I picked this up last year and just love it, it wasn’t that expensive. This is a piece that will follow us wherever we end up. Here’s a picture of it prior to having some stuff piled on top (tho I try to take pains to keep it mostly cleaned off!)
Karen in VA – thank you for the Olivia fix! She looks GREAT!
Felicia – terrific photo of your mom and son at brunch! How neat that everyone lives close enough to be able to go out like that. The restaurant sounds nifty! Autoimmune diseases are nasty – seems like more and more of them cropping up in various forms.
So far the HALT is working well. I normally don’t eat a high-calorie supper. I have a gigantic salad with coleslaw mix by itself or mixed with baby spinach, little lettuces, etc. I generally top it maybe ¼ cup of bean salad with a tangy dressing. Then I’ll add a few ounces of meat like grilled chicken, fish, or even a small slice of pizza. I LOVE the crunch of the cabbage in the coleslaw mix.
Anyhow, I realized there’s not a lot of protein and fat other than the little bit in meat and some in the salad dressing, no wonder I get the munchies after supper.
So, the past 2 evenings when the hungries start to arrive, doing a pre-planned snack of something protein and higher fat (not many sugars/carbs) is working fine. And taking my time to savor it is so important. Trying to eat a Reese cup or little Debbie slow isn't possible for me.
OK ladies, time to get moving! Have a great weekend!

Becca: The Astoria-Megler bridge has been operating on a one lane basis for the last couple of years, hasn't it? It was the last time we went over it and that was two or three years ago. Taking care of antique bridges is pretty much a full time endeavor from what I've seen. I love the ride along! Thanks!
Michele: I hope you get the lectoring sorted out, because it is something you enjoy. I have not had the best experience with churches. Our last regular church attendance was before we moved here. There was a dominant clique that centered around a couple of families. Most of the people we liked moved on to other congregations to get away from the clique social climate. It was like being in Junior High again. We are still friends with a couple we met there all those years ago. They don't go there anymore, either. They moved away and so did we, in opposite directions. We stay in touch but don't get together as often as we would like. :grumble:
Sharon in Lethbridge: What is a lease rider? I love the Halloween photos.
Machka: I love the photos of you and your DH. What a fabulous view in the background behind your DH!
Heather: Can you get o couple of brightly colored decorative pillows to sit at the ends of your sofa? There are lots of inexpensive options in stores in our area. I would guess you can find them in your area or in Brighton when you visit your son & family. :flowerforyou:
Tere in RVA: Awesome to see you again! The version of HALT I've used in my life is not a "test" that I take from some professional at all, and does not cost money. It is a strategy for resolving stress and giving good self-care. When stressed you give yourself a little self-quiz. Am I Hungry? Angry? Lonely? Tired? The answers to those questions lead to actions that help you feel better. If I'm hungry I can choose something healthy. If I'm angry I can express it or solve the problem. If I'm lonely, I can find companionship and this is one of the good places to do that. The gym or walking with the dog or a friend are other good options. If I'm tired, I find time to rest. Here is a link that I found to a bit better explanation. Sometimes the good self-care needs help from an appropriate professional and that is the best thing to do, but it is amazing how much you can do for yourself. http://www.chinnstreetcounseling.com/zomerland/zomerland_11.shtml
My riding lesson today is not until 4pm. I'll have plenty to talk about with my teacher. It is currently overcast and gray outside. I doesn't look like we'll be outside for our lessons at this point. The arena isn't as much fun, but it sure solves weather problems.

One of my Happiness Commandments is to "treat myself like a toddler". Here is what Gretchen Rubin said about that. It inspired me and reminds me a lot of HALT that has been mentioned by several of you.
"I’m going to imagine how I’d view myself as a toddler. “Gretchen gets cranky when she’s over-tired. We really need to stick to the usual bedtimes.” “Gretchen gets frantic when she’s really hungry, so she can’t wait too long for dinner.” “Gretchen needs some quiet time each day.” “Gretchen really feels the cold, so we can’t be outside for too long.”
The fact is, if you’re dealing with a toddler, you have to plan. You have to think ahead about eating, sleeping, proper winter clothes, necessary equipment, a limit on sweets, etc. Because with a toddler, the consequences can be very unpleasant. In the same way, to be good-humored and well-behaved, I need to make sure I have my coffee, my cell-phone charger, my constant snacks, and my eight hours of sleep.
I mentioned this new approach to a friend, who laughed and said, “As a toddler, I don’t handle noise or crowds well. I can’t be in that kind of situation for long.”
It’s easy to expect that you “should” be able to deal with a particular situation, and of course, to a point, it’s admirable to be flexible, to be low-maintenance. But I realize that I’m much happier — and more fun to be around — if I recognize my limits."7 -
Just a quick check in-
Love the beautiful babies!
Congrats - losers! I have a weigh in on Monday. Couldn't really exercise much this week due to med withdrawl side effects but I should be good to start back in next week. Think I will still lose a little.
Barbie - like the toddler approach!

Hi everyone!
We went to our community group last night. I was somewhat concerned about how to handle my eating. Do I eat dinner before to help me not eat there if others bring treats (I chose not to take anything with us), and then have to deal with wanting to eat when I get home or do I eat dinner after and hope to keep it lighter because I will be going to bed? The group meets from 6-8, although we were there until 9pm. I ate lunch late, so I decided to take a protein shake with me - buzzed in the bullet with ice. My DH decided he wanted one, too. Let me say, it worked! I did not touch the sweets that were there, nor did I want to and neither did DH. We just drank our shakes which stayed slushy for quite awhile. When we got home, I had a dinner that fit my calories and made it to bed without taking any food to eat before sleeping!
I dropped my calorie goal on the 1st and I think I am doing better with it than the old higher one. I may just be making better progress, but I do feel like I I have to make good choices with my foods because I have less of a buffer to fit in items that are not so good for me.
Heather UK Thanks so much! I am determined! I also know I cannot do it alone. My best thinking got me to where I am at, so love finding support. The logging, exercise, journaling and support groups here all contribute to my commitment and daily success!!

4. log meals daily
5. ONLY weigh in 1x week on Saturdays (lost 1 lb since I started the program on Thursday)

coastalgosgal wrote: »Became, enjoyed my trip to Washington! That is quite the bridge, and quite long. The construction reminds me of the Twin Bridges that go from Indiana to Kentucky, or back, whichever way you are going on US 41. It seems like they are always doing something.
I also enjoy the technology that brings my grand kids to me. They are taking a vacation in the Florida Keys right now and I have gotten videos and lots of pictures. That bridge is some thing else to!
Joyce, Indiana
Joyce, they are always painting it, and checking it from one side to the other! I have YET to drive across it!
Becca
This bridge? I took that from our hotel window, when we stayed in Astoria in 2012. That was our last night in the US after driving down to Florida and back over 6 weeks. We drove across that bridge on our way back to Canada.

Still raining. Over 5 inches so far.
Karen- Olivia is so cute and growing so fast.
Carmen - I am on day three, had been doing so good until I lost focus but am on track now. A lot of this new found motivation is due to reading the posts of MFP friends.
I have also used the HALT to stop mindless eating.
Better get up and move : )

Lanette. My son has been in the delayed entry program since July of last year. Its a great way to ease into the Navy mindset, plus learn facts that boot camp tries to cram into their tired brains. Signing up early also guarantees that whatever job we wants to rate into is locked. He auto qualified for the nuclear program, so his contract states the two years of schooling after he gets done with boot camp. Another bonus is the 12k just for finishing the nuclear school! Not shabby for a kid that has never had a paying job. He rec'd a 93 on his ASVAB (entrance exam) that he took last year at school. He studied and retook it after he officially signed up, when the recruiters took him to Portland for processing. He rec'd quite a puzzled look from the lady when he asked to take it. She was like, but you rec'd a 93?? So that test he rec'd a 98 so auto qualifying for the nuclear program means you don't have to even take the nuclear test. He had proved to them already! He amazes me every day.

Yep Katla. Yep they are always going to he maintaining that bridge. Its quite a slim bridge, many RVs, trucks going back and forth, so I am glad its only one lane!8 -

Thanks everyone for the anniversary wishes!
Just completed my first big bike ride - 3 hours. And it is true that wearing bike shorts is better than the seat covers. All my parts are good! My arms and legs are sore and I know I will pay tomorrow but this felt great!
Have a great Saturday everyone!

Barbie- The Gretchen Rubin quote about thinking of yourself as a toddler, struck a chord with me! Often when assessing the moods of the kids, I need to stop and reevaluate the situation. Are THEY crabby? Or am I the crabby one and they are responding to it? Or am I crabby and their normal childish antics are making me crabbier. Kelly the toddler needs a full eight hours of sleep each day, she also needs coffee in the morning, and some type of challenging physical activity each day and mental stimulation at least once or twice a week. Otherwise I do become The Crabby Toddler.
Today has been pretty much a wash! It has been one of those days where I have run into nearly every one I know, while I ran errands, then DYS, who is coaching today, asked me to pick up some lunch for him and bring it to the ball field, so... two gyros to go and I ate with him and watched the kids. Then my older sis, who is also a new/first time grandma as of a month ago, called me. She lives in Florida and is having the opposite type of grandma (or in her case Ya-ya) experience, as her daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter are all living with her. So she is in constant ya-ya mode, where as I am a yearning grandma, dependent on technology. THEN...my DD called me and we chatted for a while. Joaquin was waking from nap while we talked and I could hear him cry. The infant cry is almost gone. He is now beginning to sound more like he is crying "Mmmmmaaaaa!" LOL! So, now here it is; almost 3:30. I got the shopping, bank and errands run. I got my challenge exercises done and my walk in. I got my floors and bathrooms cleaned and dishes run through the dishwasher (but not put away), and other than getting the lawn sprinkled; I got nothing else done in the yard. Ah well, c'est la vie. It will still be there tomorrow.
Happy Anniversary Sarah- Wow! A three hour bike ride your first time out this spring?! LOL! Some one's butt is going to be sore tomorrow! (I do this every year, too, so I know what I am talking about!)

Barbie: The toddler approach to self-care is an excellent one, and very similar to the HALT approach I use. They both offer practical things to do to help yourself feel better now and avoid over-eating.
Alexxstarnes: Your own good health is an amazing gift to your children. It is great that you're working on being healthy. :flowerforyou:
KJ: My daughter and grandkids live with their other grandma. I know a bit of how you might be feeling. She has a huge home with loads of bedrooms. We live in a two-bedroom townhouse. We can't compete with the big house, and we really can't afford to support a family of five in addition to ourselves. If she lived within a couple of states away things would be better, but she lives in Illinois and that is not an easy commute, or even an easy flight.
Pip: I'm glad you're making some progress with the hip. (((HUGS)))
I told everyone that I wouldn't be planting a tomato this year. Lo and behold, a tomato planted itself and is visible in my garden. I'm letting it stay for now.
