Diet Coke, friend or foe?

I've lived a soda free life for 36 years. And was terrified of any diet things (still grossed out by fake salt and fake butter) but my parents taught us that aspartame was poison. Even regular soda was to be avoided except really special occasions.
Thanks to this forum, I'm now freely stocking up on my Diet Cherry Pepsi and having one everyday. And just in case I drink 1,650 cans 1 day... Diet Pepsi is aspartame-free anyway. So... thanks MFP!! And seeing my parents' horror when I drank one on the 4th of July was priceless, too.6 -

My husband is convinced, from all the internet stuff he reads, that Diet Coke is the most evil of things you can ingest. According to him it will cause all kinds of trouble, from making me gain weight, destroying my pancreas, to bloating my stomach. I love the taste, and feel it is a great sweet treat with no calories.
What do you all think?
Tell your husband to consider how many millions of gallons of diet coke that have been consumed over the decades it has been available...If it actually caused any of these issues, it would be well documented and people would not buy it. There would be nothing to debate. Also ask how something with zero calories would make you gain weight.
Yah. You may think nothing is wrong when a 3rd of all american adults are obese.
LMAO oh yeah nothing is wrong
Because a 3rd of americans is obese because of a 0 calorie drink. Yeah...
And your link is a blog post.
Other factors too. But it's a part of the problem.
Diet Coke isn't directly responsible inmo but it is indirectly certainly responsible.
Haha so yah millions of people are fine because millions of people drink it, right? I don't think so.
Thing is. If you're healthy and you drink diet Coke once in a while, it's fine. If youre not healthy, you crave sweeter things and you become addicted to the artificial sweetner.
I have no problem with people drinking diet Cole because we'll... YOLO but this is what happens, ... Yes with a 0 calorie sweetener
As I mentioned in an earlier post, I've been drinking diet coke for about 25 years, and not just "once in a while" so I just did a quick calculation on how many cans I have drunk over that time. I drink anything between 7 and 14 cans a week so I've probably consumed between 63,875 and 127,750 cans of diet coke or at least 21 thousand litres (if my maths is accurate ). My favourite snack is crisps, I never crave sweeter things and I'm not addicted to artificial sweetener...
Similar situation here. I've been drinking Diet Coke for about 25 years. I drank it when I was an underweight teenager, when I put weight on in college, when I lost weight after college, during my two pregnancies (mostly caffeine free DC) and when I was the highest weight I've been, and then when I've lost weight since joining MFP and now while I'm maintaining. It has never caused me to have additional cravings, particularly for sweet things.

I just Googled it and there is nothing good about it. I'll share the link if your interested in the read. What blew me away is that it actually makes you gain weight because of how your body assimilate it. Ugh! I'll stick with water.

How did I lose over 200lbs drinking lots of coke zero every single day?
That article is garbage.13 -
It's a zero-calorie drink. It doesn't make you gain. Or, at least, it doesn't make me gain. I have over a quart a day (I don't drink coffee; it's my caffeine source) and I've dropped almost 70 lbs in 8 months.6

It can be useful in weight loss, especially if you have a habit of drinking sugar-sweetened drinks or eating sweets. It's certainly not a health food, but in moderate amounts it seems pretty harmless.
It's probably a good idea not to make it a habit to drink a lot of the stuff regularly though. If you're doing that, it might be a good idea to cut back. The caramel coloring that's used in it it might not be very good for you, and it's certainly very acidic, so too much can cause dental problems.3 -
Soda, juice, ACV, lemonade, or any other liquid high in acid is bad for your teeth. The sodium could give you problems if you have high blood pressure or are prone to bloat from sodium. The only way diet soda will effect your body fat is if you are switching from regular, but that will result in less calories, so weight loss.6

But diet soda has about the same amount of sodium as water, because it's like 99% water....5 -

I really, REALLY want to know where that myth comes from. It's apparently been around since at least the early 90s.

I hate diet soda drinks because I'm a soda snob. And I had a soda addiction. So I've cut out soda. Now I'm sad.
But I don't really care for the taste of diet most of the time, it tastes kind of odd to me. I always thought it was the preservatives. Regardless, I don't touch it unless I'm desperate1 -
Now I really really want a Team Diet Mountain Dew t-shirt.6

Well, I feel like a kitten. 12 oz of diet coke has only 40 mg of sodium. I have no idea where that comes from, but I'll stop telling people that.

Foe. Because all diet soda taste like *kitten*. That is all.
Later this week I will be sure to enjoy my very cold glass bottle of Mountain DEW made with real friggin' sugar (the way it was when I was a kid). Yeah, that will a nice treat.3 -

It's great you acknowledged it. I've also always wondered where that myth came from. Cheers!4 -

Aspartame hasn't been proven to be or not be a carcinogen. However, the high controversy surrounding it and the claims that have been made against it are enough to make a person stop and question if the risk is really worth it. Diet Coke also contains phosphoric acid, which can significantly increase your risk of kidney disease and and urinary issues. In general, it's best to avoid 1) products with an excessively long list of ingredients and/or vague ingredients (such as "natural flavors" or "artificial flavors"), and 2) highly processed products. Just because the FDA approves it doesn't mean it belongs in our bodies- American food contains ingredients that have been banned in other countries altogether.
I've also noticed that once someone stops drinking sodas or eating junk food, the cravings go away. A much healthier sweet drink is iced tea (the leaf kind, not the powdered crap) with honey (best raw). Calories are far from being the only factor in staying healthy.16 -

Well, then you're completely missing my point. Diet Coke isn't healthy, period. Also, there have been various instances of ingredients being labeled as healthy/safe by food companies, only to be eventually proven to be toxic. When numerous people are complaining of health effects when they consume aspartame, don't you think that should be taken into consideration when you're buying a product that contains it? And, I think it's definitely worth consideration when scientists and doctors are questioning the safety of it as well. https://nutritionfacts.org/2016/09/01/side-effects-of-aspartame-on-the-brain/14 -
Perhaps rather than post the link to the Aspartame Isn't Scary post once per thread, we need to post it once per page. With neon blinking arrows8

No, but consuming it on a daily basis is likely going to lead to health problems. And that is based on evidence, not opinion.

You're right. Diet Coke contains Aspartame. Which is probably worse than sugar.
When I was typing my first post I had regular Coke on the brain
Except it's been studied so much and nothing has been proven that it's worse. https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/1308408/why-aspartame-isnt-scary
