@RespectTheKitty - I have read that as runners tire that they tend to pick up there feet less, and that makes them more liable to tripping. Something to think about I guess. I typically think about stuff like that after I trip over empty and am trying to find a good excuse for the new knee scar :)
That was me yesterday, tripped for the first time ever on a run.

Not exactly tripping on bare ground, but this excellent and inspiring trail runner I stalk follow won Western States 100 last year and this year did not even end in the top 10 - in part because she banged her knee on a fallen tree.

@RespectTheKitty I find that when I stumble or do a full Face Plant Trip it is usually a little tiny root or rock just barely above the ground, or sometime just empty air on the trail. Never seem to get hung up the one's that are 4-10 inchs high as we tend to really pay attention to them.

@MNLittleFinn Well done on surviving your First Mini Ultra Marathon trail adventure. Addicted ??

@juliet3455 have you run Golden before? I am trying to plan my season better in 2018- 1 half, 1 full, 1 ultra, so that my training is less ADD. I know my full will be Red Deer again, it's hilly af but it's fun. The half I have people trying to convince me to run Mountain Madness. For the full I go back and forth between Golden (which distance wise isn't really different from Whistler) or Fat Dog (because overly ambitious Jessica is overly ambitious). Any insights from your Western Canadian racing experience would make my day!

@JessicaMcB; No I haven't run the Golden Ultra. We do have 1-2 ladies who are looking at it. They tend to be our local Ultra Hounds. Dianne did a 50 km training run yesterday and 12 k today.
We have way to many great events available to us. My next is Emperors Challenge in Tumbler Ridge, Followed by Peace River Sprint Tri-Athlon, then 2 GP events, Roots and Ruts and Don't Get Lost in the Woods. I have been more of a HM Trail Hound than the Ultra's. Although I have 2 people asking me to join a team for a Yukon Ultra next year.

@PastorVincent and @Orphia looking at training suggestions for marathons. They suggest on early training runs to run long runs fasted, no fuel regardless of time. This will cause you to go into glycogen depletion and your body will be forced to burn fat. On long runs within 3-4 weeks of your race run fueled which will teach your body to accept and process fuel while running. Getting the combination right is extremely difficult, that's why even Stan and Moby will tell you they are still figuring it out. The one thing most will agree on is that this fuel burning element is a key component to a good marathon.

    Well said, @cburke8909

I should try some longer runs with out fuel, but I do not eat nearly enough to tip the balance. I mean If I eat 100ish calories an hour, but am burning more like 400-500 an hour (6.5mph pace), then I am still cutting through the glycogen and have to be into fat.

    Yep, that makes sense, @PastorVincent

Today I did my longest run ever! 32 km. (20 miles)

Managed an average pace of 7 minutes per km. (11:16 per mile), total run time 3:41:15

Had a total of 3 gels which were about 400 kj each, so 100 calories thereabouts each. So that works out I was using fat and felt fine.

    Feel so happy! Yippee!!!

And this is why we we have an 'awesome' button. Fantastic job!

I'm just relaxing for a few minutes before heading out for my 5k race. Was at a concert last night (Violent Femmes and Echo and the Bunnymen), which meant there was beer, pizza and a past midnight bedtime. So probably not the best pre-race preparation. Don't think I'll be getting a new PR, but I had a lot of fun.

@BruinsGal_91 Violent Femmes and E&TB?! Awesome'd right back!!!

Intention was 6.3k easy today and set out that way. After about 2k I decided to pick it up to a steady pace, (i.e. somewhere between HM and Full pace). Misjudged route so went a little long, but worked out well in that ended up approximately as 2k warm up, 5k steady, 1k warm down.

During the run all was fine but after stopping could feel tightness in my left shin where I've been having my recent problems. Stretched it out and seems fine now but still wary.

p.s. Thanks all for condolences on my DNS!

Tomorrow starts 8 days of travel. I have 3 straight days of flights as I go for a quick work trip to NYC and then immediately for a trip out to the midwest to see the family. Forecast for Iowa looks pretty brutal (as I know @karllundy can attest, seems like it's been a really hot summer there). I'll have to get up early and find as many shaded trails as I can. Where my mom lives is a new development and is sorely lacking in shade.

Yep. I run at ~4:45 a.m. and it's been ~75° and humid more mornings than not the last few weeks. More of the same this week. Be safe! Have a great trip!

I've been trying to get more runs in early a.m. for this same reason. But I'm not a morning person at all, so it's been a struggle. Yesterday (weekend, of course), I started at 7am and it was pretty good at first until it warmed up.

I keep telling myself that I need to stop using the heat as an excuse for having such a slow pace recently, but then I'm reminded at times like yesterday that the heat really truly makes a difference.

Yeah, I'm not a morning person either. Especially when on vacation! Not sure I'll be able to get out early enough to beat the heat too much. But we'll see! The heat really does make a difference, but as our coach is always telling us, then when it cools down in the fall it will feel so easy!

Ditto. I have to be out the door by 5am. The heat gets unbearable in Central Texas once the sun comes up. I am not looking forward to 104 next Monday....
