OK - I am off to the race. Still calling for thunder, but eh, it is only a mile race. I am just running to see how my old man mile pace compares to my long gone high school race. Looking at the times of the runners last year, I think I have a chance to place, but who knows who will come this year.
If I break 7 minutes, that be good
If I break 6 mins I will be very happy
If I break 5 mins, it probably means I am in an ambulance
Sub 7 is my realistic goal, sub 6 is my stretch goal. So we will see.

Goal = 110 miles
Lovely cooler day with much lower humidity. I didn't have a plan but packed my running stuff today. It worked out well as I stopped at the canal park on the way home and got my run in.
Tomorrow sounds like a great day too, perfect for the long run.
Have a great weekend everyone. Good luck on races and training and everything else!1 -

Good luck @PastorVincent !!0

Omg that is too adorable @JimCrackinDandy0

Good luck @PastorVincent !
Just an easy 5k recovery run today. My long run will be either tomorrow or Sunday, depending on life obligations. I'm preferring it be tomorrow because that's supposed to be the cooler of the two days.
The scab is starting to come off of my road rash. Must....not....pick at it......1 -
@PastorVincent show em what your made of. I love the 93% geek comment. Wonder what it is that causes the strong association between running and geek? Interesting that most of the group also is also quite verbal and expressive, leading to many, many post.(I do enjoy them, when I have the time to read them.)2

I only just noticed your comment, but I posted this a few days ago; Rerii make glass shields which are custom-sized for the 235 and are MUCH easier to put on and there are no air bubbles. I bought a 2-pack and both were easy to put on (removal of an old one is easy if you use a blade to break the seal). Now thst your midweek is up to 10... what's your weekend long run going to be?0 -
First outdoor run in 6+ weeks. (Only like 4th run in that time frame, so yeah.). I stayed within a half mile of being able to abort mission, so wasn't real exciting. Without the total drudgery of the treadmill, I was able to notice some of the niggles I've been getting are from being too tense from worrying about hurting something. So, consciously relaxing helped some. Still have some issues for sure. Pace was still good and slow, even by my standards, but it being several million degrees out by Wyoming girl standards helped me stay nice and slow (I'm not going to say actual temp, because many of you will laugh a ton me for being dramatic.). Still kept the run/walk intervals.
3.1 for 10.4 for the month. I decided last week I was going to try and at least hit a two digit number for the month. So, for the first time , in the several months you all have been tolerating me.... I hit my goal?!?! Actually passed the original one if one considers I wasn't thinking I would have (or should have) any miles for the month.4 -
Race Report.....
So I tried to wiggle my way up to the front, but it was crowded and we were almost shoulder to shoulder. I am thinking next time I will just start further back and hope for an opening.
So the gun goes off, I am probably a good 3 seconds behind it crossing the line (no official results yet), and man it is a tight field. At least three times I had to literally jump to the side (even UP once) to avoid collisions. I finally break free from the crowd and can start paying attention to my pace. Feels a bit fast but not sure I can trust that since I was unable to warm up much in the packed coral for 30 minutes before the race. Decide to hold that pace for a bit.
Then the 1/4 mile clock comes into view. ONE MINUTE on the clock. ONE STINKING MINUTE. Yeah, way too fast. Not sure if I started to run out of power at that point, or just the psychological hit from seeing 1 minute on the 1/4 mile clock but suddenly keeping that pace is impossible.
I dial it back and decide that I would have to readjust expectations based on that first quarter. I pull off to the far side and run. Almost no one caught up to me, maybe 1/2 dozen but I did not catch many either. I pick a pace that feels a little too hard and try to keep it. I did not have headphones and did not look at the watch so was running entirely by feel. Something I am not good at. As if that needed to be said at this point.
Turn a corner and right foot drops 2 or 3 inches into a puddle. Yay. Manage to keep going with out getting injured, not sure how, but by now I am wondering "where the heck is the 1/2 mile clock?" It was feeling way too long and I was worried that I had really killed my pace, so pick it up a little.
Dry heaves hit, but I do not slow down. I finally catch sight of the next clock, thinking it has to be the 1/2 mile clock, and it is ticking well past four minutes. FOUR MINUTES! UGH! I pick up the pace again. Start to cough, but I push through it.
Get closer and find out it is the 3/4 mile clock, not the half. Okay, pace not as bad as I thought. PHEW! Cross 3/4 mile clock at around 5 minutes. Still respectable. Try to kick it as the finish line is in sight. Lasts about... 4 strides and then had to dial back again. Convince myself to hold what I got. Cross the line with out dying. Primary goal accomplished.
According to Runkeeper, I ran a 6:51 mile. I think I could have broken 6 if I had not started so poorly, but man for an old guy like me, 6:51 has to be decent. Right? It is actually good enough to qualify for the slowest of the pro divisions next year.
So lessoned learned. If I run it next year, maybe start further back and definitely a little slower.
ETA: Results up Gun Time 6:53, 2nd for age group. Top five finishers were all under 5:30, never stood a chance it seems. That is okay.17 -
PastorVincent wrote: »@MobyCarp - do you feel you need to warm up for shorter races like a 5k or mile? Seems like since pushing in to marathon training the first mile or two is much harder than the middle miles.
@PastorVincent - I know, I'm too late to help you tonight; but @MNLittleFinn accurately quotes the common wisdom of the shorter the race, the longer the warmup. In practice, I don't quite follow that characterization. For my last mile race, I ran a 2 mile warmup. For my last 4 mile race, I ran a course preview as a warmup; but to be fair, I needed 8 miles that day for the marathon training plan. For a 5K, I really like doing a full course preview as a warmup. Then I run the first mile fast, pulled along by the leaders; hang on for the 2nd mile; and pick off people who never run farther than 5K in the third mile. For a 10K, I'll do a 2 or 3 mile warmup preferably as an out and back on the end of the course. For a half, a 2 mile warmup preferably with the 2nd mile being the last mile of the course. For a marathon, screw the warmup. Just try not to go out too fast.
Tonight my 5K warmup was faster than it should be (that's a pattern for my pre-race warmups) at 22:55. Then I ran a 19:28 5K race, which I'm quite happy with. Full report will have to wait till tomorrow, as I need to get to bed and be up early for the long run tomorrow morning.2 -
Oddly, both Strava and Runkeeper say my pace was 6:23 even though total run time was 6:51. Not sure what to believe. Guess will stick with 6:51.0

Got to starting line early, like 40 mins early.8 -
@PastorVincent sounds like a great pace! Pics are great!
DH is not running tomorrow! I will be up early and off to my favorite place to run, early. I should have some donuts tomorrow pre run. Except this route the bathroom could be 3 miles away... Maybe I'll skip the donuts.1 -
6 km River Bank Evening Jaunt. After yesterdays Pace Builder my calf's were tight tonight so I went Short and Slow. Waited till later in the evening for it to cool off a bit.

Garmin typically reports a longer distance than a certified race. That turns into a significant pace difference for a mile race. If 6:51 was the official time, that's the time to go with.0
