Fwiw, I'm only wondering about how many grams to count for my total here. I try to overestimate the size for my food diary.
Also fwiw, I see an extra "40g" floating in my list. That's just a typo.
Are you unable to weigh it? If it's just the peel problem, weigh the whole banana, eat the yummy part, weigh the skin, subtract, use a "banana, edible portion" entry. If unable to weigh, measure (everyone should know how long her index finger - or some other benchmark readily-accessible body part - is ), and use an entry with inchies. Otherwise, just estimate, don't fret about it, and go on with life!1 -

If you wanna keep coming in here and reporting, I promise to check in periodically and click positive reactions, plus toss in the odd random comment. Y'know, just to keep you motivated.
Has the added plus of keeping the thread bumped. Maybe we could lure in some hungry newbies, and get them over-satiated, too?
Heh, I said I wanted to join and then forgot about the thread again -- I never naturally look in the challenges section.
I've been pretty consistent about getting 10+ servings, which I expected, but wasn't sure about 'til I started logging again. The last couple days I've been great in part because I ordered a vegan Ethiopian combo (split over two nights), which just shows (not that there was any doubt) that one can eat too high cal AND lots of veg at the same time.
I really need to learn how to approximate Ethiopian myself at home.2 -

That really stinks. Due to this challenge, I have figured out that blueberries are the culprit that were making me feel like crap, particularly when I ate 6 servings a day. I've toned it down and with a couple of servings it's nothing a little chamomile tea can't help, so nowhere as bad as IBS. You have my sympathies if everything is wreaking havoc with you. No fun.
That's a bummer. The one thing that seems to get me is corn, which sucks because I love fresh corn (and put up with it in season anyway, since IL fresh sweet corn is amazing). But that's a grain, not a veg, really.
My sister has IBS and went through a lengthy process to figure out what her triggers were years ago, and found melon (which she loves), avocado (same), and raw broccoli (and maybe cauliflower), but those are fine cooked, so she was okay with those.1 -

Thanks for the reply! It's not practical for me to weigh it, unfortunately. I'm just estimating based on the size, and the calorie count is bound to be approximate. Even if I had an exact weight, the calories will vary based on ripeness and probably a number of other things. But that's OK - I just need a reasonable estimate for my food diary. The only reason I really needed to know was to figure out how many grams of fruit to put down for this challenge.
Btw in case anyone is interested here's the USDA's calorie and nutrition count for bananas of different sizes.

Hey guys, I thought of this page (well, actually I think of it every day as I try to get my veggies in, ha ha, but I commented on another page and linked here, so I guess I thought of it in a more hands-on manner) and realized I never gave my official after-action report.
--I was able to successfully incorporate 800g+ in my daily diet just about every day--there may have been 5 or so where I did not meet the goal, although I wasn't weighing and logging most of the time I was on vacation in Florida (and at one point was pondering whether hush puppies counted as veg, corn and all that)
--I did it from the start of the challenge through the end of Lent
--Once I got into the swing of things, it really wasn't that hard to maintain
--I started having a Bloody Mary at Sunday lunch because it counts as the one allowable juice serving and is low calorie and packed with celery, olives and pickles, LOL
--One of the pleasant discoveries was how packed I felt--now, most people would be like, duh, eat veggies when you are hungry, but this was more a complete heading off of hunger at the pass because I was pre-emptively packing in the veg and the fiber. It was a whole different ball game from being hungry and out of calories and pissed off that I was eating celery instead of a Twix.
--Another pleasant discovery was that my skin really cleared up. I think my overall shift to a much healthier diet when I started MFP went a long way toward this (not that acne was a terrible problem but I would have a few blemishes a month), but while hitting 10 a day, my skin cleared up to almost perfect...and I realized one area was not clearing up, so I need to go see a dermatologist about it, because it is not acne.
--Since the end of Lent, I have probably not been hitting the 10 a day standard, but have probably been getting 7 or 8 a day. I should really be more rigorous about this since 10 a day provided so many benefits, but it has definitely shifted my habits in the favor of more veg.
--I still adamantly maintain that potatoes count as veg!
Anyways, it was definitely a worthwhile and eye-opening challenge, and has had a significant effect on my daily diet.5 -
Bumping this thread because of its awesomeness.3

Any one fancy another week of this?
I'll be starting Monday, join me, think of the fun we'll have0 -
OK, I can count & post for a while, in the hopes we can get some new folks to try this. I might ave to count beer-battered fries on Monday, though. (Don't freak out: I'm in maintenance. And I'm kidding. About counting them, not about planning to eat them. ).
If anyone new is going to try this, start ramping up now. Don't go from near-zero to ten in one giant leap. And eat your fats, drink your water. We don't need more subthreads about illiquid Brown & Co. accounts.1 -
Beer battered chips sound amazing!
I'm normally in maintenance but just got back from two weeks all inclusive yesterday so back to 250 deficit for a few weeks1 -
I'll jump in too - I've just "rejigged" my food for during the week, and have 1.5kgs fruit/vegies a day - vegie filled soup or frittata for lunch, and a massive warm roast vegie "salad" for dinner. Fruit in my dessert.2
-
Bumping, started this morning but so far only had 120g of blue berries.
Just going to start making a chilli ram packed with veg.
Edit to add that takes me to 640g for the day.0 -
715g today so far, I'll some mandarins later to get me over the line.0
-
Thanks for the bump: I was just poised to seek out the thread to report on yesterday.
As predicted, Monday was a bit of a mess:
100g mixed berries
2C spinach
1C white mushrooms
1/3C chopped onion
1/2C tomatoes
So, I think that gets me to somewhere 5-6 servings. (I'm mixing grams & cups, and US/UK counting, because it's way easier for me to estimate a large restaurant salad in cups than in grams.)
This will be controversial (in spades), but I'll also count catsup as one serving because I actually did eat an estimated 1/2 cup of it.
So, only 6-7 servings, which is abnormally low for me.
I'm conscientiously not counting the maybe 2C of beer-battered steak-cut deep fried potatoes that were buried under all that catsup. I counted the calories, though. Yowza!3 -
Aw man! We are just returning from 6 days of vacation in the Traverse City/Sleeping Bear area. I am in need of some vegetative penance after considerable misbehavior at the regions fabulous breweries and restaurants, but not tonight...we are stopping at the A&W in Big Rapids for dinner! I will join tomorrow.2

Still mixing US & UK methods, but today had:
100g mixed berries
25g avocado
74g bell pepper
125g adzuki beans
77g salsa
51g onions
102g cherry tomatoes
279g cantaloupe
110g mirabelle plums
And a restaurant salad with approximately:
2C romaine lettuce
1/3C cucumber
1/3C tomatoes
Slice of orange
Couple strawberries
I guess I'd call that about 14 servings total, more or less.

I hate ordering salads in restaurants.... They are never big enough! Haha.
I'm loving soup at the moment (winter here) and it's so easy to pack with vegies. Lunches have been blended zucchini and Cauliflower soup (400g vegies) that I throw finely chopped mushroom and broccoli in to for texture. (about another 100-150g). I have it with a toasted cheese and tomato sandwich (100g)2 -

That's my reason for starting again to. 8lb holiday gain and didn't eat any where near enough veggies when we were away.
I'm enjoying all the fresh food the last few days.

That's 1/4 of my entire weekly grocery budget for my family of 5! Part of the problem was that I realized I'm pretty picky when it comes to vegetables and fruit. Almost all the sale items I didn't like so I ended up paying full price for several things. With it being off season here in MI, that added up quick. If this is something I keep doing long term, I really need to expand my horizons and try new things.
Hopefully I now have 4,000 grams worth of produce in the house to get me through Friday-I really don't want to go back to the store lol.
A huge problem with fresh produce is stores only stocking perfectly shaped and coloured items . Anything that looks of isn't stocked so there's more waste and higher costs . The shape d isn't matter for 800g. Any places sell oddly shaped cheaper f&v ?0 -

One of our major supermarket chains sells a range called "the odd bunch". I think they are cheaper, and consist of bagged vegies that are generally too small/big/inconsistent etc compared to the expected standard.1 -
Our Aldi recently started selling wonky veg. Even cheaper than their normal veg.
Who doesn't love a bit of wonkiness?1 -

Yeah, I managed to put on 3+ lbs over 6 days, ha ha! Some of it might be water weight, but I know I did a good job of packing in the calories, particularly in ice cream beer and cider format.
I won't have any trouble sourcing my veg because I came back home to 9 or more (they like to hide) baseball-bat-sized (diameter wise) cucumbers and that is without visiting the garden where my daughter has most of her 4-H plants, so I am sure there are more monsters. If anyone doesn't know, 4-H is an agricultural/home arts program aimed at kids through age 19...my daughter does garden (showing plates of veg both as individuals and 3, 4 and 5-plate collections), herb pots, sewing, rabbits, baking, preserving, berries, and her fine art project made it to the Indiana state fair.
Now that I am back I will be doing some pickling, cucumber dill salad, gazpacho, and looking into some Mediterranean recipes. After my general debauchery I am ready to take on the cukes again!1 -
So far today
150g blueberries
110g banana
5g garlic
86g chickpeas
51g beansprouts
117g mushrooms
40g onions
192g new boiled potatoes
110g raspberries
Takes me to 861g for today and I'm stuffed!!!
Anyone who gets hungry needs to do this challenge.1 -
125 g banana.......... 1.5 serving
90 g pickled peppers .........1
287 g cukes..........3.5
1 oz sweet potato chips..........1
Guacamole cup........... .66
Cafe steamer broccoli & marinara & added basil .......... 2
Black beans.......... 1
Mandarin orange cup .......... 1
11 and 2/3 servings and I didn't even have to cheat and have a Bloody Mary. I am definitely stuffed though, and agree that anyone who is overly hungry would likely do well on this.

Great start! Maybe between 6-8 servings? It's advisable to increase slowly, as some of us found to our consternation earlier in the spring on this thread!
The "rules" can be a little mysterious. If you read the first couple of pages, we are mostly going by the UK 5-a-day rules--potatoes don't count, 80 g = a serving unless it is dried, in which case 28 g = a serving; you are allowed 5 oz of juice a day to count as one serving and 1/2 cup beans/legumes to count as a serving, but with some of us there has been a rebellion against the Article Against Potatoes and we will from time to time give the papal blessing to jacketed whole potatoes to count as veg (interestingly, US guidelines allow potatoes but not corn).
So, the tomato juice would count as only 1 serving, even if you drank a pint, but 1 tablespoon of reduced tomato sauce/paste also counts as a serving with apparently no limit. Tomato soup is not limited. If the tomato juice has its fiber in it still, I would be more inclined to count it for more servings than a juice that has all the fiber strip-mined out, which is what they are encouraging us to avoid.
Basically you just have to use your judgment--I feel like my ginormous qtys of cucumber is pushing it as they are not nutrient dense, but they are very filling, and I have 12 lbs of monsters sitting on my counter, so SOMEONE has to eat them! Ideally the more "eat the rainbow" variation you get the better.3 -
103g banana
5g garlic
86g chickpeas
51g beansprouts
117g mushrooms
40g onions
192g new boiled potatoes
163g raspberries
30g dried mango which counts as a full 80g serving according to the NHS
So that is equivalent to 837g
The weights are mainly the same as yesterday as I made a pan full and divided the weights of a chick pea and potato curry.
My fat macro is rubbish again though, might have to have a spoonful of hazelnut butter later to increase it.
@Mojame9 I second the advice to increase slowly or the fibre can have unwanted side effects2 -
I'm at a loss for counting yesterday. My double partner (rowing) and I decided to row into an oldies cover band concert the city was sponsoring for boaters, with a mobile stage pulled up on the river's edge. So, I was throwing together a light picnic supper we could eat one handed (in rowing, one must always hold the oar handles, or swim). The prep happened at lightning speed, so I didn't weigh or measure.
This is what I ate:- 100g mixed berries (lunch)
- 3 veggie cups (2 cucumber, 1 Cousa squash), maybe 1.5-2 inches tall, filled with egg salad that was heavy on chopped Vidalia onions and garlic-stuffed green olives.
- 3 romaine lettuce wraps filled with a roll-up of broiled eggplant slices, balsamic-vinegar rehydrated sun-dried tomatoes with minced fresh garlic & fresh oregano, and a chunk of string cheese.
- Small sandwiches on Greek-olive and sun-dried tomato focaccia, with sweet corn cut from the ear, chopped Vidalia, fresh sage, goat feta, and enough Greek yogurt cream cheese to hold it together.
- 3 cherry tomatoes
- 4 Mirabelle plums
Along the way while cooking, I ate the off-cuts from the lettuce, the cut-outs from the cukes/squash, and probably some random other bits I'm forgetting.
I'm thinking that's not 10 servings. Maybe 7 or 8, including the scraps eaten while cooking?
I'm not doing too well this round of play, so far!
Edited: typos2 -
This looks more like a normal day, finally:
100g mixed berries
268g cantaloupe
238g tomatoes
132g Cousa squash
39g avocado
128g cucumber
100g adzuki beans
67g bell peppers
25g onions
1097g = 13.7 servings.
Yeah, I know I'm not supposed to count all of the beans, but I don't care because that rule is silly. Also, I ate 58g of pickles and 62 of salsa, both of which are mostly vegetables, and would more than make up for the excess beans. Plus it's not bedtime yet, and I still have 413 calories left, so I may eat some plums!3
