Unwarranted Advice

I have a colleague who did low-carb and lost 37 pounds. She'd gained 7 back "because of the sugar and carbs." She can't stick to low-carb because she doesn't like it and doesn't understand she lost weight because of a calorie deficit. And she doesn't have to "do low-carb" in order to lose weight, espcially since it isn't sustainable for her.
She does weight-watchers religiously and we debated on Friday (frankly, I avoid talking about food/weight-loss with her because of all the woo, she's done HCG, too--how can such an intelligent woman fall for all this crap?) because one of her meeting "leaders" told them at a meeting that blending fruit (just fruit, nothing else) increased the number of calories. I told her that was absolutely ridiculous and by that logic the act of cutting food with a knife before eating it increased calories. I was eating a bowl of blended fruit (nothing added--I like all the flavors) when she came into my office.
Sigh ...
This was always a giant issue when I was with WW. The fruit itself (which you're supposed to eat "within reason" whatever that means) is no points, but if you put it in a recipe points are assigned, so it looks like it suddenly acquires calories (which of course it always had). WW was really poor at explaining why they did it this way, and there were endless threads basically asking wtf.17 -

This is really the only thing that works, because then they stop talking.

Oh lord, that sounds disgusting! Who comes up with this stuff??
Driven by the low carb community based on a fundemental misunderstanding of science. Technically, if you at 700 calories more of fat, you would burn more fat... but its not body fat. Its an increase in fat oxidation that would occur. People forgot the whole energy balance thing and increases in fat oxidation doesnt mean increase body fat loss. Its why people think coconut oil is beneficial, which has been show to increase "fat burning" and iirc, increases insulin sensitivity.
I love being told by people much larger than me that carbs make me fat. I am a volume eater and i cant waste a lot of calories on fat. Way too expensive and doesnt satiate me at all. Oh and they subsequently try to discuss insulin like we have not other way to store fat.13 -

Before I could elaborate, he quickly butted in and said, "You'll never lose any weight, if you continue to eat banannas". Confused I asked him why, to which he replied ". You need to be careful with any fruit, but banannas are the worst. They're really unhealthy and contain nothing but sugar. It has been discovered that sugar in your diet, is the reason why people are obese. Banannas don't contain any other nutritional benefits. Eating banannas, even the odd one here or there, will prevent any weight loss"
Laughed at this one. I ate a banana this morning so I guess my whole day is off.

You're not losing weight because you eat protein bars and protein shakes.

You have to have a cheat day every week to keep your metabolism high.16

That's where people need to be reminded that there isn't one way to do it. I also lost a bunch of weight when I cut carbs and if I have 10 carbs I may as well have 200. That's just the way my body seems to work. But I know plenty of people who couldn't have any at all and plenty of people who didn't really have to watch them at all. But I cannot stand when people feel the need to give unsolicited advice. "Let me know if you need anything" would be sufficient!ladyhusker39 wrote: »Last week I was telling some friends at the gym about an awesome new pizza place I went to over the weekend. They both immediately started lecturing me about how I'd never lose weight if I kept eating all those carbs and how wrong it is to eat carbs in general.
They've literally watched me lose 33lbs in the last 7 months eating a lot of carbs. I don't get it. The evidence is right in front of them and they still want to judge me. I'v never commented on how or what they chose to eat.

Oh gosh, my mom is the worst. She believes all the woo about slow metabolisms, a calorie in a carb is more than a calorie in a protein, fat turns straight to fat, CICO isn't the whole story, hormones cycles cause weight gain directly, etc etc etc.
She doesn't understand how I've been able to lose 45 pounds. She also won't exercise, won't count calories, and thinks she can only have 20g carbs a day, then binges hard cause she's hungry.
So she is always telling me this stuff and I'm over here like..."LOOK AT ME. CICO WORKS."26 -
Oh! And my favorite: "your metabolism slows down if you don't eat enough which slows weight loss."17

This morning my wife asked why I was eating less and counting calories. I just said Duh.15

Hahaha...i'd need to move into one too!!11 -
When one of the gym owners found out I did IF I was told that will prevent any weight loss and I had to eat multiple small meals a day to keep my metabolism fired up13

This fruit and veggie blending mess was an endless point of debate. The issue was count points or not for blended produce. Now that the end of the year is approaching and thats when they usually roll out the next "new and improved " program, get ready to hear more stuff like this.3 -
I was told MFP is rubbish and doesnt work!! but I know it does16

I'll regret this but....what is blended fruit. I'm not interested in buying into hype, I just don't understand (eg is it literally blended to a puree)? I'm a CICO person through and through. If you want to intermittent fast or do low/no carb or whatever, I don't care. Just don't assume what works for your body and lifestyle is THE way to do it instead of A way to do it.

My ex-roommate was absolutely clueless about nutrition but acted like he knew everything.
He'd insist that cheese was a great source of protein, completely unaware of the amount of fat it contains. He also believed that, because potatoes and milk together do contain all the nutrients the human body needs in some amount, 2.5 medium russet potatoes drowned in butter was a healthy meal. These were the kinds of "simple tips" he'd give me to "help me keep my diet balanced".
And he wondered why I was losing weight while he was gaining.
Also, once he realized I had an eating disorder, his advice pretty much boiled down to "well just stop having that!"7 -

Pureed fruit or fruit blended into a smoothie. Funny part is I use their recipes. Raw or cooked
fruit and veggies have no points. Veggies and fruit in a smoothie have points. But a pureed all vegetable soup has none. Ha.2 -
I'm a fit person with a BMI of 21. I've been maintaining at goal for years. I know what I'm doing. It always amuses me when an out-of-shape, perpetual yo-yo dieter loses another 10 pounds (that they always end up regaining) and then tries to school me on their newest methods that will be "so much better" for me. Oh please, people. Save it. Or the ones who ask me (over and over) how I do it and then promptly dismiss my advice time and again. Stop asking me if you don't want to know.
