Unwarranted Advice

I experienced this for the first time today while at the gym. Now I have been going to the gym for years on and off and I have been cycling on and off for years too. Today I decided to do the stationary bike. For me it is just a workout aimed at working my muscles and burnt calories so I sit in whichever way allows me to exert the most pedal power.
Some guy approached me and asked if I am a cyclist and asked if he could offer some advice on my posture on the bike. Well for goodness sakes. How I sit on my outdoor bike and how I sit on. Stationary bike are two entirely different things and I will admit I told him that no, I did not want his advice thank you.
I go to the gym to decompress and have some time in my own little world. I hate being disturbed mid workout. It is jarring. Maybe it is due to my being on the Autism Spectrum but when I am there I am focused on what I am doing and my music. Fortunately it is he first time but I am somewhat bemused that anyone would care how one sits on a static cycling machine that, unlike a real bike, has a back to it.

I'm not interested in buying into hype, I just don't understand (eg is it literally blended to a puree)? I'm a CICO person through and through. If you want to intermittent fast or do low/no carb or whatever, I don't care. Just don't assume what works for your body and lifestyle is THE way to do it instead of A way to do it.
Pureed fruit or fruit blended into a smoothie. Funny part is I use their recipes. Raw or cooked
fruit and veggies have no points. Veggies and fruit in a smoothie have points. But a pureed all vegetable soup has none. Ha.
Ummm, wow, people really think this? I'd love to have a huge bowl of corn or unlimited carrots and peas. I love those super starchy veggies. Who knew I could assume they have no calories. SMH. This picture is not directed at you, it is directed at whomever came up with that nonsense (and the desperate people that believe it).
The last time I did WW was about 5 years ago, but starchy vegetables and avocados were not zero points. Carrots and onions were zero points raw but acquired points when cooked.
Thanks for clarifying. But everything is still not a zero calorie free for all regardless of preparation.
No argument there!2 -
Some of my favorite "diet" advice is from the great Dr Oz lol. He once said you can eat unlimited non starchy vegetables each day and they do not count towards your calorie goal. what the *kitten*! really? I believe you do need to eat vegetables but a serving of broccoli here, a cup of green beans there will add up especially if you are not counting the calories!10

I haven't had a lot of people giving me diet advice in real life, but that changed quickly after joining MFP. One of my first "friends" on here would peruse my diary every day and then PM me about what I was doing wrong. Too much fruit, not enough fiber, I shouldn't eat pre-workout because I won't burn any fat, etc. etc. At first I kindly thanked her and just continued to do my own thing, but she persisted. After awhile it become so annoying I had to remove her from my friend list.21

Not when you're lactose intolerant, which this person knew about me.18 -

This was the first time, that he had seen me eating a bananna or any afternoon snack. He said, "I thought you were meant to be on a diet", to which I replied that "I was". Before I could elaborate, he quickly butted in and said, "You'll never lose any weight, if you continue to eat banannas". Confused I asked him why, to which he replied ". You need to be careful with any fruit, but banannas are the worst. They're really unhealthy and contain nothing but sugar. It has been discovered that sugar in your diet, is the reason why people are obese. Banannas don't contain any other nutritional benefits. Eating banannas, even the odd one here or there, will prevent any weight loss"
Should have told them to stick it up their potassium.30 -
I have a woman at work who has been obsessed over my weight loss... mostly because she has a few pounds to lose and hasn't been able to do it and because I have lost 70lbs so she is constantly giving me unwanted advice on how to "lose weight". She is constantly making comments about me eating fruit... You know it is HIGH IN SUGARS... ya, natural sugars and I am not diabetic so... (insert eye roll here) She has also made comments about the amount of water I drink during the day and any time I eat Tuna Fish, because "you know what they say about eating too much tuna fish" I don't claim to know much about anything, all I do know is that I have been able to lose weight and more importantly, my most recent blood test, show that I am spot on with my nutrients and show no deficiencies sooooooo... (insert tongue biting here) LOL20

The usual woo woo. "grains are inflammatory, sugar is poison, meat and dairy will kill you, blah blah blah." I do not ask these people for advice EVER but they sure do feel compelled to give it repeatedly. And my favorite... "I, Random Internet Person, know better than your doctor does how you should eat." Bugger off!!!10

My mother whom I immensely adore and admire, and who eats 6 times a day, always tells me: "you should never feel hungry".
I love you, but eating at the first feeling of hunger is what helped me get fat in the first place!17 -

I love reading all of these and I have to admit, I used to believe much of this before joining MFP. Although I never gave out advice to anyone.
I particularly love the Atkins and Mediterranean diet stuff.3 -
One of my old co workers also tried to lose weight, we had this discussion once about eating after dinner.
She said her trainer told her everything
you eat after dinner would turn into
pure fat and onto your tummy. like literally.
And she believed it.
I told her it's about CICO but she was all 'so you say my trainer is lying? You think you know better than him??'
Even my boss believed it so I just stopped the discussion there.12 -

Well... I guess if I ate ice cream in bed and dripped some on myself, it would literally be fat on my tummy...20 -
Protein too!1

The trainer didn't believe it but was desperate for any way to restrict her intake I assume.

For a short time I was seeing a trainer who was highly recommended to me. Here are a couple of conversations I had with her:
Trainer: You NEED to eat breakfast when you get up in the morning.
Me: Why? I am not hungry first thing in the morning.
Trainer: You have been fasting all night while you sleep and you need to jumpstart your metabolism.
Me: I lost about 200 lbs, I had to learn to NOT eat when I wasn't hungry, so you are now telling me to ignore all that and eat when I am not hungry because I NEED to?
Trainer: yes
Trainer: what have you been eating?
Me: Meat, fruit, veggies, eggs, cheese, yogurt
Trainer: No! Don't eat dairy!!!
Me: Why?
Trainer: It's so horrible for you!
Me: But you feed your kid dairy, right?
Trainer: that's different
Needless to say... I stopped going to her. My old trainer used to tell me to make sure I had some pizza and a black and white cookie when I would go back to NY to visit my family, but don't go TOO crazy. His style was much better!

Oh yeah, "you should eat breakfast". I get that one all the time. Though I got it before I needed to lose weight too. It always struck me as funny the number of people that would tell me I needed to eat breakfast to be healthy. I mean I was in my 40's never been overweight, zero health problems and they are telling me this. ::laugh::6 -
Once when I mentioned to someone who was kind of plump that i was going to be serious about my diet and that I had bought a lot of celery she was shocked, scolded me and told me that celery has a lot of sodium...
P.s. feel free to add me if you need more friends who are active on MFP. I'm at my halfway point! 7 more lbs to go...10 -

Though on the other extreme a person in a FB group was throwing a fit and decided to go off a medication because "it made her gain weight."
How did it make her gain weight? It's a med that you need to take with food to not damage your stomach and instead of setting her times to take it at meal times, or just eating a little snack like a piece of cheese or some crackers when taking it, she was taking it away from meal times and eating two extra meals a day when she took it.
(I've lost 20 lbs while taking this same medication)16 -

Sometimes you do need to eat, like when you take meds, and you totally should work it out so that you can. To not do that and blame the meds on the weight gain is a little crazy!1 -

Exactly, like I lost a *kitten* ton of weight without eating breakfast, and I am super healthy, and telling me to eat when I am not hungry is completely counter intuitive and makes zero sense... at least the way she explained it!3 -

That is true. You will burn more calories by drinking iced drinks than room temperature. But it's a really tiny amount. If you switched from drinking every drink at room temperature to drinking them all iced you might burn enough calories to lose 1 lb per year.4 -

They've literally watched me lose 33lbs in the last 7 months eating a lot of carbs. I don't get it. The evidence is right in front of them and they still want to judge me. I've never commented on how or what they chose to eat.
I started working out a lot (couple hours a day) and was eating way too little to sustain normal function. I went to my doctor and she said "maybe eat smaller portions" I lost 4 pounds yesterday, I don't think smaller is the direction of survival!5 -
Was also told once that once you have extra fat cells even if you lose the fat the cells are still there waiting to blow up again....?
Sadly, this is true. The fat cells empty out their little store of fat as we lose, but the cells are still there . . . waiting. If we don't overeat our maintenance calories, that's all they do. (I'm in year 2 of maintenance).
Once your body creates a fat cell, you will never be truly rid of it unless it is removed by liposuction or something.
That is one of the many reasons that it is so easy to "put the weight back on" after you stop "dieting".
If you do not "permanently" increase your BMR & TDEE (by adding muscle for instance) then the fat cell will grow again if you eat over your previous maintenance level.
Probably sooner / faster every time in fact, because if you are not maintaining (or building muscle) then you are losing it, slow but sure.
Muscle is metabolically expensive and the human body will happily break muscle cells completely down for protein or just to save energy.
You cannot say the same about fat cells.10 -

Although it's important to fuel your workouts, I am quite confident that you did not lose 4 pounds of fat in a day.12 -
People who tell me I workout too much - uh, no, actually I have a desk job, it's not physically possible for me to workout more than the human body is capable because I literally SIT for 10 hours a day.
Anyone and everyone who is obese and yet telling me what I should do to lose weight - if you aren't walking the walk, don't bore me with the talk.
I do love getting stories from people about things that have worked for them...even if they are big and still working on it, I love hearing about different stuff they have tried.13
