7.3 miles for me tonight. I meant to go 10 to 12...the first 6 with Kody, the rest on my own. During the run with Kody I decided to stop when I brought him home since I had so much to do at home before bed. Also, my toe hurt.
This morning in my rush to work, I was running down the stairs in my socks. At the end my small toe caught a shoe laying there, curled under, then I put my full weight on it. It hurt like a mother kitten at the time but in my haste to get out the door, I didn't give myself anytime to worry about it. It was such a nonevent I didn't even mention it in my earlier post today.
I finally saw it while putting on my running socks. It was a deep, dark bruise (and I rarely bruise). Still very tender but I decided it still wasn't a big deal and ran anyway. By the time I took my socks off at the end of the run, it had turned so red I thought it was bleeding, and had a fair amount of swelling.
I think it's just a bad sprain but I'm not going to let it slow me down. Planned rest day tomorrow then 6 to 9 miles Friday. For now I'm applying beer to it (internally).
October Progress:
19.4 out of 110 miles

October Goal: get thru the Aim At Melanoma run without losing it.....
10/1 rest
10/2 4.20

@navygrrl I like @7lenny7 's suggestion of internal lubrication of that injury! (within moderation, of course....)
Ticker is my goal for 2017 and progress to date:

File under running related injuries I never expected to get... I bashed up my THUMB really good. It got caught in the security gate on the way back in from my run yesterday morning. OUCH. Nice blackened thumbnail to match all the toenails that runners get I guess! I do not think it is broken, but still hurts pretty good this morning! Yay!

at least we have internet back!!!
Only managed one run so far this month, 3.2miles. I love running in the dark in the mornings. Actually, I PREFER running in the dark. Ahead of me yesterday was a guy with a bright headtorch AND a red flashing light on his backpack to the rear, and I found myself hoping desperately that he wasn't going my route because I wanted to run with the smatterings of morning dawn only. Thankfully he went elsewhere.
So far so good on the not-drinking-in-October thing. It has only been five days mind.......
I didn't make it to a run this morning, but that's less an issue as I'm running with the club tonight on the 'full of stinging nettles and exceptional slurry' run. I'm now having issues with waking up in the morning to run, so have ordered a 'sunrise' alarm clock that gently turns a light on to simulate sunrise a half hour before you are due to wake. Does anyone have any experience of this? I imagine that what will happen is that I wake up half an hour early as soon as it starts, and then get used to it and sleep through the whole thing.
sorry about your injury @navygrrl but as others have said - a break tends to heal better than a tissue tear!!! Stay with us and watch the banter, but maybe steer clear of the doughnuts or hotdogs.....1 -

Phew, thought you were going to say stay clear of the Eggnog too!

Thanks all for the birthday wishes, it was a good day.
Yesterday did strength training but I have never been good about warming up so I am working on learning this warm-up -- https://youngernextyear.com/pdfs/tty-cheat-sheet.pdf .
It takes me over 30 minutes just to do that .. so I feel like I don't have much time to actually lift! But, I will get faster and then I will try to add it prior to all exercising.
Those of you who know me probably know I'm obsessed with the Younger Next Year series of books. They have worked for me!
Got a lecture from trainer yesterday about the importance of rest days. He said don't think of them as "rest days" think of them as "active recovery days" ... that's the only time your muscles really grow. Yeah, I know that... but I don't wanna.
Anyway, set out to do my usual 5 this morning and it was sprinkling - yay! It felt so great because it wasn't hot! But I checked weather app and saw there were thunderstorms possible so I just kept looping close to home. Then around mile 3 I thought, nah, they are wrong... leave this little circle. Yep, here it comes in buckets and that was okay, but I saw lightening so turned around and went back for 3.5. For some reason I always feel like it wasn't a good run unless I can do 4-5 but today I felt really good about it. 3.5 was good!
10/1 - 33 miles cycling; 1 mile run
10/2 - rest day
10/3 - 5.6 miles - birthday run!
10/4 - strength training
10/5 - 3.5 -- cut short by rain.

Today's notes: I've been tired this week, so I decided to kale my week day runs all road. It's nice being able to take a HOT shower when I'm done (when I run trail and have to shower at work, it's a cold shower...bbbrrr) Woke up and got in 9 miles today at an average pace of 9:06 and average HR of 151, with 80% of the run in z1 and z2. Finally got to where I enjoyed road running this morning.... Getting the speed this morning felt great.
Tomorrow is another 6, probably on road, then Sat and Sun are going to be 15-20 and 8-10 respectively, on trail. This is my last "big" training week before taper and Wild Duluth. I can't believe how close it is now!

Well I just got the call and my ankle is officially broken. I'm waiting to hear from the orthopedist about next steps.
I'm so upset. I was just getting to know all of you in this group, and y'all were getting me even more excited about running. I had signed up for the dark side half marathon in April.
The worst part is that I broke it by walking to the parking lot. I didn't even trip. Ugh. Sorry for the whining.
Good luck to all of you in your goals for October. I'm coming back eventually.
@navygrrl Oh, no, I'm so sorry you broke your ankle.
I'm sure you feel like wallowing in self pity as I would. I hope you can find some comfort in coming back to update us. Throughout these threads along with the highs of achieving goals are many battles with injuries. I don't think there's a runner in here who hasn't had an injury to overcome.
I'm in bed with a bad back at the moment and haven't run for 5 days but I've been reading this thread and running media to get better at running mentally.
Injuries *kitten* suck, though.
It's all part of what makes running such a temperamental but beloved mistress.
@orphia - oh no! Hope you're soon back on your feet and running again.
and injuries that prevent us from running but weren't actually caused by running are the absolute worst. I was once sidelined for months because I slipped on some black ice while walking to my car. If I'd gone for a run instead, it probably wouldn't have happened.2 -
@7lenny7 who knew PBR got into the toe healing biz . Hope its looking better tomorrow!
@girlinahat I too like to rely on my eyes running the dark wherever possible. I often see people with their lamps on at sunrise and I wonder about them

when you've been wearing it for 2-4 hours, sometimes it's hard to remember it's on... My night vision stinks, so I need mine on trail... on road, the only time I have one is when I'm on the highway, 300-600 lumens beat reflective gear for visibility any time. Love running in the dark, just don't trust my eye sight for those dark runs.1 -
@navygrrl oh no! I'm so sorry to hear about the ankle break! I hope it's a swift, clean recovery for you!
You can definitely still stick around here. That's what I'm doing, even though I'm currently on the injured list as well. I just look at everyone else's posts and think, I'll be back there soon!
So yesterday was my first PT session for my IT Band Syndrome. The physical therapist was recommended by a couple of my running friends and I was really impressed! He did a very thorough evaluation, including filming me running, and really seemed to know his stuff. He and his facility are very much geared towards sports and performance so I know they're going to be really great at keeping me active and getting me back to being an even better runner than I was before, especially with his coaching on running form.
I'm not sure if it was a subconscious fear, or I was just too distracted taking everything in on my first visit, lol, but I didn't ask yet about whether he had any thoughts about me still making my first marathon on 11/19. I need to remember to ask at my next session tomorrow. Ugh. I'm kinda afraid to ask. But, all I can say right now is, WOW is my IT Band sore from the deep tissue work he did on it yesterday! Holy cow!3 -
@navygrrl- Well that just stinks. So sorry to hear this news. Hope it heals quickly and I am sure we will still be here when it does. Of course, you are more than welcome to hang around and vent about not being able to run, as pretty much all of us have done at one time or another
@wishiwasarunner - I am in the Cincinnati area, about an hour and a half from Louisville and Lexington. Louisville is a great city for a weekend trip for us. Unfortunately, no samples allowed on the bourbon chase, although most of the exchange points between vans are at distilleries, so you are encouraged to do tours when you van is not running. However, I think we will be more focused on eating and sleeping. There is a giant post race party in Lexington on Saturday with lots of bourbon samples from all of the distilleries. I have heard it is a blast. Our team captain, who did the chase last year, made sure that part of the plan was to reserve a block of hotel rooms for Saturday night so that everyone can enjoy the party.
@Orphia- How is your back coming along? So sorry to hear you are laid up.
@KatieJane- Did your PT offer any advice about running with your IT band injury? Most people I know that have seen PTs for IT bands were told they could run through it with a decrease in mileage and speed plus lots of foam rolling and cross training. I hope it all works out for you. I know you have been training hard for this race.5 -
10/1- 6 miles+ doggie walking
10/2-P90X3 Total Synergystics+ doggie walking
10/3-P90X3 Agility +7.1 hilly miles
10/4- P90X3 yoga + hour of walking the pup
Uneventful day of rest yesterday, which included two walks with the pup and 30 minutes of P90X3 yoga, which felt great on my sore legs. My calf was hurting yesterday, which is a new one for me, so it made me raise an eyebrow, until I realized that the P90X3 Total Synergistics video I did on Monday has a bunch of calf work. Mystery solved, and no pain today.
Today I have a personal training session scheduled after work. My trainer is helping me to develop a total body plan with weights that I can do on my own two days per week. I had planned on running this morning in the dark to get used to using my headlamp again since it has been a few months since I have run with it. But when I went to head out the door, the rain was really coming down. I am all for running in the rain, but I don't usually head out the door into a downpour, so I decided to postpone that until after my gym session this evening. My legs should be good and tired by then...
Upcoming Races:
10/13-14/17-Bourbon Chase 200 mile relay
11/12/17-Honor Run half marathon, Florence, KY
05/06/18-Flying Pig marathon1 -

9/3 5miles 45m:30s
9/4 9miles 1h:24m:02s
9/5 6miles 55:m:30s
Another 6 miles today. Weather has been wonderful, sunny and in the low sixties.
Tomorrow I’m going to do my long run, 11 miles. Not sure how my legs are going to hold up seeing that I just did 9, then 6. I guess it’s building up stamina.2 -
Oh yeah, one more thing (sorry, I am chatty today and nobody here to talk to at work). I ran with my flipbelt on Sunday and loved it. I had bought it last spring, but still had not used it. As sad as this is, this was the first time that I have ever carried my phone with me on a run. I know it's stupid to go out without it, but I am a serious minimalist when it comes to running with gear and I never had any place to put it. But the belt was great! I did not even know it was there. Highly recommend for anyone looking for something to carry your phone, ID, gels, etc.1

@KatieJane Here's to hoping you hear good news regarding your injury from the PT and you can run your marathon.

@lporter229 that is a great question and I will be sure to ask. I'm assuming I'll be able to since one of the things I know he's going to be working with me on is fixing a couple things in my running form, and you can't do that without running, lol.0

Oct 1 - rest day
Oct 2 - 7.5 miles
Oct 3 - rest day
Oct 4 - 7.5 miles
I want to get one more shorter run in on Saturday, and then on Monday I'm running the Tufts Women's 10k in Boston. My training runs are always solitary affairs, and the majority of races I run tend to be smallish local 5k's with around 200 entrants. So the Tufts with its 6,000 runners is always a great experience. Not expecting a PR because it can get a bit congested at the beginning, but if I come in under an hour I'll be happy.3 -
10/1 – 6 miles
10/2 – rest day
10/3 – 8 miles
10/4 - 5 miles
10/5 - 10 miles
29 of 100 miles
What a beautiful morning, cooler and just nice. Started to run and felt good so I started to map out a longer run in my head and decided to get in my long run this morning. It's just lovely how I pretend I don't have a job to get to in the morning ha ha.
Off to do some work and then back to catch up on the thread.

I bought one a year ago and my husband swiped it. I should get another, like you I don't carry anything on a run, unless I take my hydration pack. I have a tube belt that works great in the cooler months.1 -
@lporter229 sounds like you're having fun with the cross-training is going well for you.0

I have a question for the guys. This weekend is my anniversary and since we will be doing the Bourbon Chase next weekend and my husband has very little running gear, I thought that I might get him a few items of new clothing. I was looking at shorts (he definitely likes at least mid length or longer) and I am wondering if he would like the added support of the two-in-one compression lined type shorts. Do any of you guys have an opinion on these? Love them? Hate them? Are there any specific "guy" issues I might need to consider? Thanks in advance for your help!0
