Just signed up for a 5k fun run on 11/5. I'm a little worried. It hasn't been advertised much and it's the inaugural race. You can see registered people & there is only one other woman registered for the 5k. There's three bike distances (it's a cycling race with run thrown in) and the only person registered for all three distances is the organizer. I have this weird, irrational fear of getting left alone and then lost on a course. HAH
And I'm looking at Turkey Trots trying to figure out what which one I want to do. I've narrowed it to four that is near both me and my brother, sister in law, and nephew so we can all do it together since I'll be eating with the in-laws.0 -
@ariceroni how awesome! Congratulations! Fab photos too.0

@JessicaMcB good luck at Whistler! It snowed on the mountains here in Vancouver last night, so I expect it will be cool at the start.
Hubby and I do the MEC races all the time. Most are awesome. There was only one I didn’t love because it was a bit too busy for the trail. You don’t get t-shirts and bling, but they are always chip-timed and have bananas, bars, coffee, and nuun at the finish.2 -

I woke up I the middle of the night with a horrible headache that is still talking to me, so I decided to take a rest day today. It’s also garbage day, I hate running with all the can out, yuck smelly ha ha
@shanaber the fires have been awful, stay safe.
@JessicaMcB how do you get the time for all that running with little ones? I often wonder that when I see your posts, I know you run early but how early? Great picture sequence ha ha
@kristinegift for the sake of your can opener I hope things get better faster than expected.
@jheppley your team sounds awesome. Good luck this weekend! I tried to coach Skip at soccer when she was little but years ago I heard a great speech about letting others coach your kids and it was a great excuse to send her to another team ha ha. I think I was harder on her than anyone else so it was for her benefit.
@katharmonic glad it’s easing up a bit.
@eponine1984 your 1 mile story gave me a chuckle.
@juliet3455 why type of farm?
@7lenny7 I hope your calf is better
@JessicaMcB you are so ready!
@girlinahat ha ha!!! So true

I finally got to see ortho today. Thankfully I'm in a boot and not a cast. I can even walk without crutches now, albeit with a limping gait. The ortho is confident I'll be able to participate in the half in April, although he did say that most likely I will be mainly walking and won't be able to run the whole distance. I've got exercises to do to help with mobility, so that's another good thing.
Oh, and apparently I've broken this ankle before and never knew it. I have bone fragments from a previous injury. It's weird to find that out. Luckily the fragments haven't caused any issues. I'll probably end up with arthritis in that ankle, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.5 -

I am getting excited and surprisingly nervous for the Bourbon Chase this weekend. I have never done a relay, especially not one like this. I know it will be fun, but I think I may have underestimated how challenging it is going to be. I am particularly worried about my hubby. His first leg is 8.6 miles and he has only done two 8 mile runs in training. Also still concerned about my second leg. I was looking for some additional details on the event since they are pretty scarce on the website and I stumbled across this blog from 2014. It just so happens that the author ran the same legs I will be running and it does absolutely nothing to comfort me.
http://fitting-it-all-in.com/we-did-it-my-bourbon-chase-experience-2014/
Also, we are not going to have a hotel room until we finish in Lexington (we are taking our tent), so her comment about that shower being the morale boost she needed also has me worried. At any rate, we leave for Louisville immediately after work tomorrow and we have a 7:45 AM start time on Friday. My legs are sore today from yesterday's double, so I will be taking it easy until then. In hind sight, that may not have been the best idea given the current status of my legs.
Hopefully I will have some good photos to post now that I run with my phone!4 -

I'm still not so fast that I would have a chance of winning an age group award or qualify for Boston, and I don't think that will ever change. But now my PR for 5km is 26:26min; which is much faster than I ever thought possible when I started running. And despite the fact that I hated running in school, I now enjoy it so much that I ran longer and longer distances - as a kid, I thought 800m was horrible torture; now I've run two marathons and will probably train for another one next spring.
@ariceroni and @garygse Congratulations again to both of you, and thanks for the great race reports and awesome photos! (maybe apart from ariceroni's blister, but my own fault for clicking on the spoiler button ^^)
@RunsOnEspresso At least if you are the only woman, you are certain to win both 1st female overall and your age group award It's still a month to the race, plenty of time for other people to join.
@amymoreorless Lovely photos, looks like a perfect run!
@girlinahat I love your marathon dream. Bouldering along the way and cake at the aid station? Let me know where I can sign up
@7lenny7 I'm sorry your calf muscle is hurt. I hope you'll recover before the race!! But if not, getting the chili & shirt and enjoying the atmosphere also sounds like a plan.
I had to DNS the half I wanted to run last month, but I didn't even go there - there was no shirt but only an unspecified "souvenier price", and the drive there and back would have been around 2.5 hours, so it didn't seem worth the time and gasoline (plus my knee got horribly stiff from sitting, so I wasn't keen on all that time in the car). But I was seriously tempted to go - if it had been any closer, I probably would have gone.
@greenolivetree I know exacly what you mean by looking back to last year's October and feeling disappoined by this year in comparison. Last year I ran my first marathon in October. This year I'm in the middle of building back distance and wondering if I'm already back in shape enough to sign up for a 20km race at the end of the month. There's ups and downs in running too, but we'll get better again, that's for sure!

Today I did this really complicated thing were I went to work by bike, but took a backpack stuffed with both running clothes as well as another set of everyday clothes; with the intention of running home today, and then running back to work tomorrow morning (and cycling home). And since I already brought all the clothes there, I can commute-run without a backback, how cool is that?
But if I repeat this again in the future, I need to pay more attention to packing. When I wanted to get changed tonight, I realised I had forgotten the running shorts - oops! Fortunately, I've got some "emergency running clothes" stashed at the office, just in case... Those are all things that I don't miss too much if I don't have them available at home, like those annoying pants with legs that end a few centimetres above my ankles. Still better than nothing, so I put those on rather than cancelling my running plans.
And it was a really perfect run - not particular fast or super far or along exciting trails, but simply one of those runs where everything feels right and you are just feeling happy with every step.
Oh, and I spotted this guy along the way:

@skippygirlsmom I hate running on garbage day (or the day before) because every one puts their cans on the sidewalk despite the city sending multiple notices that they are to be in the street. The garbage men are always good about looking out for pedestrians so that's always nice.
@navygrrl Yay for no crutches and getting to do your half, even if you have to walk some. But crazy about the previous break. Yikes!
@_nikkiwolf_ They are only doing top three overall for each gender. So as of right now I am guaranteed to place! It's partnered with our NHL team and they have made one Facebook post on their foundation page. It's a little weird seeing as the MLB team does one every year and they advertise all over the place, even for their inaugural.2 -

@navygrrl Well, at least they do not have to amputate it yet! Glad you can still do the half!1

Last time I posted was on page 9 this month and came back today and we are on page 28 - spent most of the day catching up on posts but only made it to page 22. Will catch up later.
I was only able to complete 4 of my planned miles last week and did not get my long run in this past weekend because I had planned to travel to Houston. However, My hubby thought Hurricane Nate was headed more west than east, so he did not want me to travel and my uncle (who had been battling cancer for two years) was sent home on hospice last week and past away on Saturday night. My uncle did not tell us he had terminal cancer even though he knew for about a year before he past away, so it was kinda of a shock. He felt if people knew that they would treat him differently.
10/06 - 4.0 miles
10/08 - 4.0 miles
10/09 - Rest Day
10/10 - Rest Day (not planned)

12/02/2017 St Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend (HM)
01/13/2018 - Louisiana Marathon (Quarter Marathon)
02/17/2018 - Mardi Gras Mambo (10K)3 -
@bride001 I'm so sorry to hear about your uncle. I think my dad had the same mentality. He battled liver issues and eventually liver failure for 8 years before he told us about it, and then he passed three months after he told us. Part of it was that he always had an issue with telling us anything about his health because he didn't want us to worry. When I was deployed to the Middle East back in 2001, he had a heart attack and an angioplasty, but he didn't let anyone know until after he had been home from the hospital for a month. I know they don't want us to treat them differently, but I wish I would have had more time to prepare. Even with preparation though, it's still a shock. So *hugs* and mojo to you and your family.0

My plan was to get a peg leg and be a pirate.
There's a 16 min/mile time limit, but I think I can run/walk and not get caught by the sweep bus. Even if I do, though, I'll still be at Disney World, so it will still be a win.10 -
10/1 - Rest
10/2 - Rest
10/3 - 5 miles treadmill before weight lifting
10/4 - 8.15 miles
10/5 - 5 miles treadmill. Worst workout ever with serious BG problems. So bad that I skipped weight lifting afterwards.
10/6 - Rest
10/7 - 1.4 miles. Was supposed to be 12 miles, but it was raining and I had some GI issues. Ugh.
10/8 - 4.72 miles. Was harder than it should have been.
10/9 - Rest
10/10 - Figured out why I've been having GI/stomach issues/pain and difficulty breathing. Gall stones. Skipped run to try to flush gall stones.
10/11 - 5.04 miles - was supposed to be race pace. Some gall stones were flushed, but still having abdomen issues. Still, this went pretty well and was almost to race pace. Going to do the home flush again on 10/13 to get rid of any remaining gall stones.
Upcoming Races:
10/21/17 - Oregon Trail Run marathon (First marathon... goal 4:10)

46.2 miles so far this month.
Being new to this group, I am just trying to get caught up on everyone. I really appreciate reading the supportive comments.

@skippygirlsmom I am up to run at 3AM six days a week. The way I see it is that pain and sleep are secondary to showing the girls that if you devote yourself to an idea, if you struggle for it that you can make it happen. What we show them always matters more than what we tell them- Skip is a pretty amazing testament to that
@MNLittleFinn idk I think we still qualify as ultra newbies for life
@seanevans and @RunRachelleRun thank you7 -
1---5.00
3---3.44
6---3.46
7---6.23
10---2.54
11---4.03 A good little run. Especially since I initially I decided to bail on today's run. I have a rule, if I have an IBS flare, I don't run (usually to dehydrated). I went out with the hopes the med kicked in and nothing was headed out. Tummy was fine. Now I have this strange pain in the middle of my IT band in the stance phase and if I squat. What is it?

@_nikkiwolf_ I had the same experience about saying my goal time of under 45 for the 5K and the person thought I meant the 10K. When I explained it was for the 5K, I got a sad look in response. Your huge improvement gives me hope!
Sorry to read about all the injuries. Heal quickly, everyone!
After a long calf strain in August/September and having to take it easy for my 10K race last month, I am finally better. Unable to find a local running group, I joined a local masters track and field club. They're kicking my kitten! A few hours after each workout, I stiffen up and walk all hobbledy-hoy.
I'm not sure how to fit in my strength and distance running along with these three weekly sprinting workouts that leave me sore and exhausted. And the group does running drills before each workout and these feel like a good workout on their own. I'm spent before we even get started haha.
Just a few weeks ago, I was finally able able to run slowly for 45 mins without walking breaks, so I'm hesitant to give up the distance. Plus, I'm registered for a 5K next month, a 10K in February, and a half in June, so I have to try to fit in some distance training as well.
I'm late to the party, but maybe this will be the month I hit my goal.
MTD - 29.08 km / 75 km5 -
@_nikkiwolf_ How is there a giraffe on your running route?!?! Or am I totally missing something here?0
-
Thanks @kgirlhart @Elise4270 @skippygirlsmom @navygrrl @seanevan10 @BruinsGal_91 @kevaasen @PastorVincent @Stoshew71 @shanaber @cameronheel @katharmonic @garygse (congrats on your awesome time!!) @wishiwasarunner @7lenny7 @ddmom0811 @jvcinv @lporter229 @greenolivetree @RunRachelleRun @_nikkiwolf_ and anyone else I might have missed by accident!
@skippygirlsmom so funny you pointed that guy out! I've shown that picture to god knows how many people (and even made it my facebook profile picture!) and no one else noticed. Now it's all I can see when I look at the picture haha, poor guy
@amymoreorless looks like a beautiful day to play hooky! I think all of us are a bit jealous
@PastorVincent wow, first place across the board on Strava! Nicely done! Also I'm with @MNLittleFinn on this one, avoid long runs on the treadmill as much as possible. I typically run through the Chicago winters outside; my rule of thumb is that as long as it is above -10*F real feel I will run outside. I do avoid running when it is icy though, preferring instead to go during/immediately after a snowfall or waiting until they have plowed the streets once the ice sets in. Also it gets pretty windy here so I try not to go out if its over 25 mph winds, I just don't have the right gear for super windy and super cold
@shanaber Glad to hear you are staying safe out there! I hope you are able to get some running in, but staying out of the smoke and evacuation zone is definitely a higher priority!
@kristinegift So sorry to hear you are dealing with an injury right now, I can definitely understand the crankiness. Hopefully you are back out there soon!
@JessicaMcB Good luck! Though with all the training you've put in, you'll hardly need it
@_nikkiwolf_ is that a real live giraffe??? I am so confused lol
October Running:
10/03: 4.03 miles (1E/2MP/1E)
10/05: 3.01 mile easy run
10/07: 2.01 mile easy run
10/08: Chicago Marathon (26.54 miles)!!!!!
10/10: 2.01 mile easy run
10/11: 3.08 mile easy run
Total: 40.68 miles
Notes:
Another easy run this afternoon, 3.08 miles at a 9:20 average pace. My legs surprisingly feel pretty much back to normal; I ran the "hill loop" twice at the park and my quads didn't hate it any more than usual haha. The only thing is that I have developed a cold over the last two days, and I'm hoping it won't keep me from running this week! I usually am almost never sick (last time was early 2016), so I suspect it was the marathon that got me sick- a combination of depressed immune system from all the race stress and the 200+ high fives I gave out (plus I don't think I washed my hands before eating lunch post-race ) Hopefully it will pass quickly, but in the meantime I am enjoying the excuse to get extra sleep!
Upcoming Races:
Chicago Marathon - 10/08/17 Finished in 3:54:35!!!
Space Coast Half Marathon - 11/26/17
Excalibur 10 Miler - 03/18/184 -

10/7 - 2.5 miles
10/8 - 4.25 miles
10/9 - 4 miles
10/10 - REST/STRENGTH
10/11 - 4 miles
22.4 miles/60 miles
The start of the month was lower mileage but I think I've hit a stride now, able to run at least 4 miles daily (plus 1-2 days of rest). Next week, or possibly later this week, I may run 5 miles, which would be the longest ever for me.
Happy running!7 -

Nominal challenge goal: 100 miles
Real goals: Get healthy enough to run 5 days a week. Avoid re-injury. Build base.
Today's notes – Lots of posts. I've read (or at least skimmed) them, but ran out of time to reply to anything coherently, and time to post yesterday got pre-empted by Microsoft deciding it needed to reboot my computer when I'd rather be using it for what I wanted to do.
So . . . yesterday was club practice. 2 mile warmup, then mostly easy around a 1000 meter loop of cross country type terrain. Thought to do 400 m at T pace, and ran from one marker to the next. 45 seconds. Oops, that was really 200 m. Oh, well.
Today I went to the Wednesday evening group run for the first time in many weeks. There were light showers, and the clouds made it get dark early. Fortunately, it was Nathan demo night for lighting gear, so I ran with a borrowed headlamp and a couple of borrowed blinkers. This evening, there were 4 guys in my group: me, two normal leaders, and the Nathan rep. We ran along and chatted, while I mostly listened. The other three guys mostly talked about managing nutrition and pace in 50 and 100 mile races. I told them I'm the lightweight, I don't run farther than 26.2.
By 4 miles in, I was feeling the pounding on my ankle. While the rest of the group took the planned route, I went back to base the short way. Added about a mile of nice soft trail, and was glad to have the borrowed headlamp. But there's an odd thing. After I left the group, my ankle felt better. Part of that would be the soft trail, but it still felt better on the concrete sidewalk running solo than it had running with the group. Look at stats. Mile splits were 8:16, 8:30, 8:13, 8:23, 8:04 (mostly solo), 7:48 (all solo), and a 7:42 pace for the tag 0.30 miles. I guess I was able to run more lightly at a natural pace than at a slower pace designed to stay with the group?
Came home, iced my ankle, feel pretty good right now. The prognosis is good for this being my first week with 5 running days since injury.

@skippygirlsmom Its a straight Grain Farm - no animals as they require 24 - 7 - 365 attention.
Since they are down to the last 100 acres ( ~5% of total acres ) they are very relaxed now.
Finally back home after a week away so should be back in my shoes tomorrow after adult swim club.3
