It seems like each decade/period of time has some health thing that is all the rage and then later people roll their eyes at it. What do you think this decades will be?
Sugar is the enemy?
HAAS?
Protein shakes/supplements?

This. Keto jumped the shark, now they have exogenous ketone supplements(lol, you're burning those off instead of bodyfat). Keto was really popular among bodybuilders in the late 80's/early 90's until bodybuilders started showing up in contests being in their worst shape ever. The 1992 Night Of Champions is a good example. All competitors were forced to do keto diets under the Vince McMahon federation. All of the well know bodybuilders at the time came in to the contest in horrible condition. Look up Mike Quinn Night of Champions on Youtube to see the "results". Ironically, the winner of the contest, Gary Strydom, didn't have to follow the keto diet and was known to eat 6000 calories per day in contest "mode" at about 60%-70% carbs.23 -
Keto definitely transcends the decade, but it used to be called Atkins. I tried it for all of one week and it was the most miserable week of my life. Proponents say you need to push through that and you'll feel wonderful! WTH?! No thank you.
Excluding a huge amount of nature's bounty from your diet just does not seem natural or healthy.30 -

Oh definitely leaky gut syndrome. I actually had a "leaky gut" so to speak and it required having my guts removed. If your gut actually is "leaky" you'd have very serious medical issues.30

LOL this. "Adrenal fatigue" is a good tactic for charlatans to sell supplements. "Here bro, take some of this for your burned out adrenals brah"9 -
Keto
Adrenal fatigue
Leaky gut
Gluten free (with no medical need)
Clean eating14 -
Statins as a preventative drug - it has never been shown to work in that role, especially for older women.
Low fat diets for all - this just won't die!
Low sodium for all - another fad that won't die even though no science supports it.
Claiming gluten free status when in reality you are "gluten light".
Not addressing health when attempting weight loss. Some people do have health issues that are reflected by their weight. Not everyone, but some have issues that make a lean weight harder to get to, but when treated right it removes any weight loss barriers.
That low carb is unhealthy.
That we need grains.
Fibre's necessity.I vote for hypothyroid. The ultimate fad disease. Just about everyone here claims they have it, and blame their weight problem on it.
I don't know... Since about 1 in 10, mostly women, do have hypothyroidism, I think it is not an unusual problem.

I don't have a finely tuned sensitivity to health woo, but if it resembles garcinia cambogia, it probably is health woo . What is Dr. Oz talking about lately? What is Oprah doing lately? Oprah is lately partnering with Weight Watchers to promote whatever latest variant of fail they have. That will be this decade's woo.
By the way, green tea antedated American health nuttery in the 19th century and will survive American health nuttery of the 21st.5 -
That any single food is to blame for obesity.
The insulin fairy (it's bad science, people).
That sugar is evil.
GMO fear mongering
Keto
Any diet cultism
Paleo
Bullet proof coffee32 -
VEGANISM.
People are insane when it comes to believing sensationalized documentaries on Netflix *cough* WTH *cough*, blogs, etc. MEAT IS THE DEVIL. ITS FULL OF TOXINS.
Also, detoxes, and anti-GMO BS. Sigh.32 -
Detoxes= glorified laxative abuse21

Too many to list. Find the magazine section at the checkout of any drug store chain, and there are probably 20 or 30 types of health related woo being promoted at any one time.2

Veganism because of that documentary is ridiculous. There are people who have genuine ethical reasons for being vegans who also think that documentary is complete bunkum.
I think the two should be thought of separately.

Of course. I'm vegan-ish and I think it's complete *kitten*. But there are also people that follow and preach vegan diets that justify it with "meat is causing cancer" or "meat makes you fat". I guess my frustration makes more sense if I had also stated that I follow a veg*n diet.4 -
Not sure this fits but I am so over the smug good bodies on here (both boys and girls) who talk as if they only eat ice cream and pizza and as along as they do their "deads" they lose fat and add muscle. A great body is hard work and you do not get it by eating tons of junk food. Also the humble braggers on here make me want to vomit.67

Definitely the "insulin fairy" as the overarching one of the decade. I see the "sugar is the debil", Keto and Paleo as all subsets of that. Sadly, most of those that bark up the insulin tree don't even really understand what insulin does physiologically and think it stores fat magically. In the end, if you don't have excess energy to store (energy balance), you are going to make fat.
Once someone is Insulin Resistant you have a whole other ball game but insulin wasn't the problem to begin with in most cases. It was the unrestrained overeating and obesity that was caused by that. With a small % of folks with a genetic component, IR doesn't happen to people at a normal body weight/ BMI.11 -

Go to the thread "CICO-a meticulous log that proves it". I think you might be suprised. If not, you'll learn.28 -
"Carbs will make you fat" seems to be going strong, but I sense a strong movement towards "food from animal sources will kill you". Plant-based faddy dieting has been around for a while, but lately it's gaining more traction. I'm not complaining. I hope it spreads even more so vegan alternatives get cheaper, or at least more available where I live.12

It ticks me off that the diet industry is a multi billion dollar industry and we keep following each new fad like lemmings. I'm in my 50s and I've seen every fad come and go. When I was 15 I sucked diet iced tea from a baby bottle because that would supposedly help me keep weight off.
None of this will die if we don't stop and realize that a healthy, balanced diet (yes, even with meat and grains!) with a few treats now and then and getting some regular exercise is the boring, long-term, effective way to lose weight. There are no shortcuts, no magic pills.
We are the reason that these stupid fads gain traction.25 -

When a thyroid panel is done and all the levels are abnormal, either high or low, and you need to be put on meds to normalize it, then it is a disease, not a fad. People don't claim to have it, clinical test prove it. What about Hashimoto? Is it a autoimmune disease also a fad? Do you also consider diabetes T2 a fad disease ?
