Sober October 2017

Glad I found this thread. Every part of my day is great, I weigh my foods and measure my beverages. If I was either snacking or drinking I would be in deficit every day but when the 2 are combined it blows my calories to maintenance and the scale doesn't move. Its always been a habit for hubby and I to have a snack and an adult beverage while watching a show after the kiddos are in bed. He has stopped having a drink except for his 2 days off and I realize that I am still continuing on my own.
Starting today my goal is to make it through the week without any drinks. I need to break the habit and saw many of you had success with substituting a different beverage. I will have just a soda (rum and coke is my go to drink) and see if that gives me my fix without adding the alcohol.9 -
I completely relate and am working on getting my "fix" out of system1
-
So I lost my strength. Ugh hoping to gain it back. Very hard *kitten*!3
-
You will find that strength...and even if you lose it...we need to continue to push ahead4

I agree!!2 -
Cholesterol up again. Drinking does it and the extra junk I eat while drinking. Which equals extra pounds and that is just another reason for the higher number, too. All the more reason to cut DOWN.3

I know I am starting late but you know the saying. This challenge is harder for me than keeping my food intake down as I am used to having as little as 2 beers to as many as 6 beers a night almost every night. It is a pattern I've inherited from my family (a large portion obese) that at the end of the day 2 beers help unwind you from a stressful day. In that "tradition" I have developed a beer pouch. So I am in, I want to at least reduce to only weekends. Hopefully it'll enable me to see some difference.7

So far this month I have been able to have a few glasses of wine only on the weekends. My willpower is finally paying off!!6

Good Luck. You can do it!!0 -
well I had another drink on Sunday with lunch, because we'd all worked hard over the weekend. At first I desperately wanted another and another, but then no one else was (only one other person had a drink) and to be honest, I just didn't need it.
It's like when I gave up smoking. I quit cold turkey, easily, but would have the odd craving. And I found it I waited just a little while, I didn't want it any more.
I'm hoping to keep up this occasional drink idea - that's my goal, to have one or two now and then, because I like the taste, but to still be able to wake up refreshed, and not do it often.6 -
I have been struggling lately, stress has hit me hard and I'm wanting to turn to my old friend of alcohol. So far I have had 3 drinks since September 28th. Not the goal that I was hoping for but it's much better than my old normal of 3 drinks per night, or 1 bottle of wine.5
-
This is day 4 of not drinking for me. Why does it feel like so much longer than that? I can do this. I have to. If I don't then nothing will ever change for me. So, I'm doing this.6

Yes! My challenge and goals as well...my high blood pressure is likely contributed by my drinking1 -

You’re doing great! I also had several drinks this month, which is up from 0 last month. But it’s much better than where I was a few months ago with daily wine. If it were easy, we wouldn’t need a thread on it!

So true!3 -
Day 50 for me. Yay! A daily drinker for 25+ years, surrounded by high functioning daily drinkers. The "start tomorrow" gang always hovering close by. Every day that went by, was another day I didn't follow my dreams, goals or passions.
Now, I'm 50 days closer to achieving them. I'm exercising, eating healthy, loosing weight, sleeping well, off the sleeping pills and my mind is clear. I'm preparing myself to do what I love most and I will be healthy and fit.
Drinking is a ball and chain. It will hold you down. Good luck to all of you!15 -
Hi everyone,
This is my first post ever on MFP. Saturday 10/21 I will be 4 weeks sober!!!!12 -
Checking in. Doing well...not perfect, but much improved. Started this challenge on 8/29 and had 3 drinks total in Sept and 2 so far this month (celebrating my anniversary). That's a big switch from almost daily drinking. For those who are struggling with an all or nothing mindset, please don't despair. You are not a failure...keep at it!! You may stumble here and there, or simply make a conscious choice to imbibe, but the overarching goal is to work on this behavior that had slipped into becoming a mindless, unhealthy habit. I'm trying to take back the power to decide rather than relying on always drinking default mode! Like @cmeride wrote, drinking can easily become a ball and chain. It's Oct 17...let's press on!9

Thank you. Its very hard. Hubbys gone back I'm going AF again3

I'm in. This is the reason why I gained weight in the first place.
I find social pressure is difficult, a lot of what my friends do is go to the bar. It's hard being the only one not drinking or staying at home to avoid it and being left out.
But I am fed up with being overweight and unhealthy, time for some changes.

I have gained weight to cause it leads to unnecessary munching....coupled with no exercise...we have a recipe for disaster3 -
One week sober! Wooooooo! I'm feeling pretty damn good about myself right now. One week without a drink might seem like small beans to some, but I assure you it's very large beans to me. I'm not sure why I'm talking about beans. I'm just excited!10

Almost went all of Friday night without thinking of drinking! My mind is starting to shift away from weekend=drinking, which I am really excited about.5

Late to the game but I am going to join this challenge3
