December 2017 Running Challenge

I'm hoping to eventually be able to keep up with my 11-year-old cross-country runner. He's what got me into this!
You need to play a long game, there, either in years (keep running when he's lost interest / is too busy) or in distance (run farther). Kids are really fast.
I was walking with my 14yo today, and she decided to outwalk me. I had to jog to keep up with her; apparently the three inches she has on me is all in the leg. I had to content myself with my smooth easy breathing, and my ability to sustain that pace for miles, because I could not get anywhere near the leg turnover I'd have needed to walk that speed.

First log of the month: 3 miles down of 25 mile goal for this month.6
-
Was going to run today, but having breakfast with my in-laws and then watching my nieces in the Nutcracker took priority over my morning and afternoon. Was going to run this evening once we got home, but my intestines disagreed.
Tomorrow is a new day!5 -
Just missed my stretch goal of 50kms last month so I'm in for 50kms this month!

I was jet-lagged, a bit out of condition and an emotional wreck, but I made it. The reason is that my mum passed away a couple of weeks ago and I've been back in the UK to spend time with my dad and sister. I flew home yesterday, and this race was for my mum. I'm going to miss her so very very much.
I am so sorry about your mum. I lost mine in 2012. It's rough...0 -
@BruinsGal_91 So sorry about your mom.
Like many others I didn't do much running in the past. In School they would have the Once a year Track Meet where the week before you would try all the events and the one you did the best in is what you were entered into. The longest distance was 400yds and I have always been more Clydesdale than Greyhound - so Javelin and Shot Put for me.
Definitely a Mature Adult Onset runner. As part of PT rehab for a torn meniscus they suggested swimming and had me walking on a treadmill before PT exercises. Over time it slowly evolved into a faster pace until I was running as the PT watched for knee stability. Hated the treadmill so when he said in passing I could start doing some slow short runs outside as a test of the knee I was outside as fast as I could be. Every thing sort of evolved from there - Especially since some of the people in the swim club said I should do the Tri-Athlon since they had seen me Running and Swimming so biking was the easy part of the event.
9.5km A beautiful Full Moon Night run.
All day it was gloomy and overcast causing zero visibility - white sky & white trail with no definition to show all the hazards. So tonight was fantastic. My pace was sucky but it just felt good to get out and move.
12/03 9.5 km – 146.03 km - Mtd 009.5 km – YTD 1253.77 km

Finally! a post that would motivate me! I'm a new runner... I'm just starting my C25K training program.
My aim this month is to run 50Km.
Here is to being someone nobody thought I could be!15 -
JessicaMcB wrote: »@hjeppley How is 10 mi a fun run? That doesn't sound like fun, that sounds serious!
It's all a matter of context- 10 miles of trail can be fun+ if it's high level tech and you're used to the distance. I find basically anything under 50k can be classified as a fun run if the tech is good enough to entertain (lousy trails needs not apply )
Yeah, this "Fun Run" was associated with a 50K and a 50 miler on the same technical course with 1800 ft elevation gain, so definitely "Fun" compared to those. It was certainly a serious race for me though, coming back from injury for the last 9 months! I had to hike all the steep uphills and there were a few steep downhills that were really scary--super steep, 1 ft of fluffy leaves and no idea where to stick your feet.
I am still hoping to do a 50 miler in the next year or so, but I am not sure this is the course to do my first even though it was a beautiful course. Maybe I'll try for the flatter (1200 ft elev in 20 mile rather than 1600 ft elev in 10 mile) 50 miler in mid October and come back and do the 50 K at this one next year. They had a really nice indoor set up for drop bags and crew. Those of you experienced ultra runners, how much time did you need to recover from your first 50 miler?
Plan for today is water walking and some yoga. Quads still really hurt from those hills!4 -
@rolaasad Welcome!! You are at the right place!1
-
@hjeppley Idk that I would call myself an experienced anything but I raced Whistler 50 Miler on October 14 and ran my first training run post race on October 18 (only 15k though). According to my log I was back on the same days on, days off from there on and my miles volume was back up to normal the following week with a long run of 100k. @MNLittleFinn ran his 100k a week after I ran Whistler and didn't take much more time off I don't think?
Didn't mean to come across as saying your race wasn't serious by the way, it sounds awesome! I just love to party on trail, how can people not have fun out there?!2 -

3/12/17 Walk 1 hour
2/12/17 rest day

So this morning I was going a pretty decent clip for trail (5'24") when I come up on this four way intersection at the top of North Hill. I see nothing in the lamp light whatsoever so I keep pace. And that's when this goddamn buck bolts through the intersection so close to me that I could feel the wind change between us (if that makes sense?). I almost could have matched @MNLittleFinn only with antler related injuries instead of branches
Seriously though, the deer are driving me crazy right now- trail is teeming with them and they're a damn hazard the way they run around (please note: there is likely a deer out there somewhere telling this exact story who wants me to gtfo of his turf lol).

I actually am not opposed to this union as it addresses most of my problems. Anyone have a suggestion re: what to do with the moose?3 -
PastorVincent wrote: »@JessicaMcB Need to introduce your cougar friend to your deer friends...
Either that, or clean out the deer so the cougar moves on to somewhere with better hunting.1 -
@penko47 and @rolaasad Welcome to the group. We support every one , also Tease in good nature humor. I mean who can't laugh @MNLittleFinn for trying to run into a stationery tree, it's not like it jumped out in front of him.PastorVincent wrote: »@JessicaMcB Need to introduce your cougar friend to your deer friends...
@hjeppley The steep hill with fluffy leaves, I can relate to. We have one hill which has been Nicknamed "Parachute Hill" for that very reason of "no idea where to stick your feet". My experience is that a lot of people taking part in the Trail Events walk the steep hills and run the downhills and flatter sections. Any trail is a good trail.5 -

@eponine1984 I say go for the half. If your anything like me, “thinking about it” means it’s already decided. Plus, you can never have enough shiny bling.3 -

Yeah, I mean if I was a hunter, I would not sit in a tree I would just go for a run. Deer come right to you.5 -
12/1-P90X CVX and yoga
12/2-rest day
12/3-8.3 miles
Very busy weekend. Had to do some major re-organizing of my schedule to fit even a small run in. Ended up running yesterday evening, first 2 miles with the dog to get her out a bit then finished it off solo for a total of 8.3 miles. Not really the distance I would have liked, but glad to get something in. Bonus that it was a beautiful evening with a full moon, so made for a nice, peaceful run.
@BruinsGal_91 - So sorry to hear of the loss of your mom. I am sure racing for her felt very inspired.
Congrats to @hjeppley, @PastorVincent and @rheddmobile (and anyone else I may have inadvertently missed while hastily skimming the hundreds of weekend posts) on your impressive race performances!

I took like 6 days off after my 100k, but part of that was because I was waiting to talk to my coach about training schedules. The other part was my calves didn't want me to run yet.
