I suppose it's worth the aggravation since the thread is entertaining enough to draw new people to read it, and getting the aspartame isn't scary thread posted on every page is a plus for new people reading this discussion.

I can't cut out coffee. not happening. soda, I can out completely but I choose not to. I'll have a ginger ale or cherry coke zero here and there.1

Coffee black with some cinnamon for flavor. Sugar and cream will be converted into fat. No pop at all. Diet pop is actually worse than regular pop because of the fake sugars your body doesn’t know how to break it down so it can actually make u gain weight.
With all the focus on diet soda, I missed the other part of this claim. Are you really thinking that some sugar and cream in your coffee will automatically cause fat gain regardless of whether someone is in a calorie deficit, surplus, or at maintenance?

To the bolded - the same can really be said about water. There really isn't anything nutritionally in water either. Diet Coke is 99% water. I'm glad you clarified that it is just your opinion though, and not fact.6 -
Its been lost in pages and pages since - but poster upthread did have a point about large amounts of soda being linked to osteoporosis.
This is not an artificial sweetener issue - applies equally to diet and non diet sodas.
Something people with or at risk of osteoporosis would be wise to consider and limit their intake accordingly.2 -

If you drink abnormally huge amounts of carbonated beverages, it would be wise to moderate your intake to a sane level. If you drink a sane, reasonable level of them, there's little or nothing to worry about. This applies to many foods/beverages in our diet.
The same can be said for water - guzzling a gallon of water in a short period of time can make you seriously ill or even kill you (hyponatremia). But a gallon of water spread out over a couple days is harmless - and even beneficial.5 -

Probing to find out WHY someone has a particular belief, especially when that belief is not supported by science, is not the same as asking why they are dissing something you enjoy. It can be a useful attempt to get the person to evaluate their beliefs, consider their sources, take a step back and look at the big picture....

Another poster asked that poster to explain why it is unhealthy.
No one said anything about "demonization." Instead, poster who made a claim was asked to explain the basis for that claim.
I think that's a reasonable question, whether or not you like the thing at issue. Indeed, if someone said the same thing about cold cereal (which I dislike to the point where I find it bizarre that others voluntarily eat it) or Wonder bread (which is IMO disgusting), I might ask the question, because asserting that someone should "give up X because it is unhealthy" really should provide something credible in support of that claim, and the poster did not.7 -

I'm not a scientist and I'm not as well-educated about foods as I'd like to be. But, I just compare two options and ask myself "which one will be better for my body?". 9 times out of 10 water is going to be the better option. I also ask "Which one do I NEED?" I will always need water. I will never need soda. Now, I do very occasionally (like once every three months) drink soda when I go out if I want that's what I want. I'm cheap though so I'd rather just have the free water I drink my coffee with some almond milk and a little bit of sugar. But, coffee is my personal treat and it's something I want to enjoy and I look forward to my morning coffee. I think it's important to see what works best for you. If you can meet your goals drinking soda then go for it.3

There's little you actually NEED. If you only went for that, then all you'd ever take in would be water and soylent.7 -
I gave up coffee and diet drinks: My choice, with the diet drinks it was because of the sweet taste of sugar even though it was sugar free, it would then make me crave other sugar foods, so I just stopped and it has worked after a weaning off period... Coffee because I am on Prednisone tablets for a auto immune disease and they say it's better no caffeine, or alcohol. Tough but I want to get my inflammation under control and get off these horrid tablets, been near 2 years now.... Prednisone has already given me Osteoporosis..
My eating and life had to really change over the last two years, but there is a light at the end, PMR is not terminal, it can last from 2 to 8 years.... And I am tapering very slow off them now.

I agree - of course it comes down to dosage and context.
that's why my post said "consider and limit their intake accordingly"
not "never drink one at all"
But people with or at risk of osteoporosis should probably limit their intake more than the general population should.

I believe in concept about context and dose. I was curious how some of the vocal "context and dose" people eat so I looked at open diaries. Unfortunately I found some individuals getting 1/3+ of their calories (on a fairly low calorie diet) from high calorie/nutrient poor foods and alcohol, with barely a serving of a fruit or veggie to be seen.
IMO, not a good example of context and dose.10 -

Out of curiosity, how many diaries did you look at and how many would you say fit what you've described? Also, did you just look at one day's worth of entries or several?
I'm asking because six days out of seven, I've got a LOT of fruits and veggies in my diet. Even when I've logged a recipe like "couscous pilaf," I can state that the recipe includes craisins, dried apricots, green peas, onion, and almonds. But if you were to look at my Saturday eating, that's where you'll find that I have potato kugel and a cookie for breakfast (with some melon). The only veggies I'm likely to have at lunch are a small portion of pickled beets. Everything else is bread, hummus, various other dips and spread, a bean-barley-and-potato stew and a lower-calorie dessert. Supper is sliced cheese on a bagel. So, if someone were to hypothetically look at one page of my diary and that page happened to be Saturday's entries, it would paint a far different picture than, say, Monday.
I'm probably not alone in this.
Also, the way I ate when I was at the beginning of my 'journey' is a bit different from the way I eat now. (Has to be. As my calories got further reduced, I started making better choices. I'm thinking that people eating as you describe on 1200(F)/1500(M) calories per day will either figure out what's more satiating quickly, up their calories, or give up.) Did the diaries you looked at belong to relative newbies, or people who've been here for awhile?7 -

People's diaries are honest records of what they eat, used in a way that works for them. They are not 'showcase models'
They may not even record some things - I dont bother tracking water intake and often not diet sodas or lettuce and such either - because virtually nil calorie.
And anyway, the messenger doesnt change the message - if I am morbidly obese and make a generic statement like 'exercise burns calories' the fact that I am obese or do no excercise myself does not invalidate the message.

I am not one of the people referenced in the post (my diary is only open to friends), but I am similar in that someone looking at my diary wouldn't have a clear idea of how many fruits and vegetables I eat because most of them are included in recipes I've created myself. And, like you, they have names that often don't indicate how many vegetables they have in them.0 -
I choose not to indulge in either very much but I won't give it up completely, same as alcohol. I see these things as indulgences to have every now and then but not everyday, but that's just my opinion.
Some people have it all the time and feel fine and usually are pretty healthy, but it doesn't have the same reaction for me. If I drink too much of any of those things, I gain weight because it makes me crave a lot of...you guessed it...sugar...the bad refined kind.
Such is life.

didn't read all 8 pages, but if we're voting then i'd keep the coffee. because coffee, duh. it's an important food group that tastes great.
and incidentally because i've had more than one dentist warn me that 'diet' or not, the carbonation in any fizzy drink is not good for your teeth.4 -
I just gave up the diet coke coz it made me really bloated with the gas.
