New to the group, but everyone's posts are very encouraging. I'm trying to get at least 20km/week, but the weather's been cold, so I am stuck on the dreadmill.

Obviously, I can not speak for your neighbor, but if you were my neighbor, I would rather you come over and do the wash than suffer. Your neighbor might feel the same. Many people like helping people, and you steal their chance for joy when you do not let them.
Just a thought.
My husband says this all the time. I’m very reluctant to ask for help, but it seems when I do people are so happy to be helpful.

Big Hairy Audacious Goal: Sub 4 hours in Pittsburgh 2018!
Official Marathon PR: 4:11:28
Next Races (more as I find them):
03/17/18 - Shamrock Shuffle Half Marathon
05/06/18 - Pittsburgh Marathon - aiming for sub four hours.
05/12/18 - Glacier Ridge 50k Trail Ultra (I must hate myself)
2020 - Disney World Dopey! (if can raise funds)
So Strava thinks I ran pretty hard:
All I know is the tempature was in the lower... SIXTIES! I was all about running in shorts and a t-shirt again. It even started raining about half way through and I did not care. The only regret I have is I did not realize how good my time was when I was running and stopped at 11 miles because my loop had taken me back to my start. I was well on my way to a PR HM distance but stopped. Ah well. Another day.
We are under a winter storm advisory for tomorrow so not sure when my next outdoor run will be, but it seems my plan to force my self to run faster on the dreadmilll might actually be helping.10 -

Speed work today... in the rain and the slick footing! We're under a winter storm warning for later tonight, but today was wet and humid and soggy. I do love my gore tex shoes though - I know Under Armour is not a highly respected or swanky brand but these suckers have done me great service, I went up to my ankles in water several times and when I took my shoes off in the car my socks were completely dry.
So we made our first 9 minute mile! 8:53. And then went fartleking through the muddy woods. It was just us and one other very muddy runner, and a guy training his Labrador to retrieve. I'm starting to master the "hi you're crazy we're crazy too" smile and wave while passing other runners in adverse conditions.
Total 3 miles running, 2 walking.

@PastorVincent Nice run today, and what's wrong with running in a little snow and wind?0
-
Rest day today. The left leg tells me I need it. Tentative plan is another rest day tomorrow, then attempt 5 miles at Freezeroo #3 on Saturday morning. Don't race it, just run it easy. Or maybe run MP; forecast is for 10-15 mph WNW wind, snow showers, and gun time temperature of 13º F (-11º C). It's hard to run slow when it's cold and I'm trying to keep warm.
Or if I wimp out of the race, I could do a social run of 3 or 5 miles Saturday morning. The race is probably better footing and a more pleasant route.
Today I got out and walked about 3 miles, at 60º F (16º C). Most of the snow has melted off my lawn and the streets; it's nice to have it gone before the next batch comes in.
@PastorVincent - The cold bothers me more than it used to, and heat less than it used to. I don't think it's entirely because I lost 55 pounds, though that's part of it; the other part is that I'm a distance runner with a low resting heart rate. Get the heart rate up while running, and keep it moderate walking around, and the cold isn't so bad; but just go out in the cold after sitting around, and it's awful. There's also a psychological effect; the same weather feels colder in street clothes than in running clothes. When I'm dressed to run, my body expects to be generating heat soon.3 -

Packing my bags now and headed to Key West tomorrow!

You know that might be part of it. I do not know what is considered a "low resting heart rate" - nor have I actually measured mine - but I think you would say I am probably in the "distance runner" category of physical conditioning.0 -

Gym again. Slightly less packed but I still had to hop over to the elliptical to finish my distance because there was a wait for the treadmills when the 30 minute timer was up. Sure wish I could run 5K in less than 30 minutes...
Anyway, tonight will be stupider cold and then it's supposed to gradually warm all day tomorrow. By Saturday's run it should be about -2C so back outside for my long run. Yay! Planning on 10-12 km depending on how ambitious I feel.

Right now the winter storm warning does not start until early evening. So if I can get a little jump on exiting work, I might be able to get the run in ahead of the storm, and then just drive home in it instead0 -

No change to my prior post; I've been on levothyroxine (generic synthroid) longer than I've been a runner, and annual blood work has not indicated a need to change the dose.
But that does bring to mind . . . when I was in the weight loss phase, I was cold a lot, even in the summer. I used to go outside to walk in the heat because I was cold in the air conditioned office. That stopped happening when I got into the maintenance phase. 20-20 hindsight says I ate too little and lost the weight too fast, with being cold a symptom of simply not eating enough; but that phase only lasted about 12 weeks, so I got away with it. It could have turned into a health problem if I'd kept that up a year, but I didn't need to lose a year's worth of weight at the rate I lost.0 -

It was a busy day of appointments today, but I got my run in. I played with the speed a bit on the treadmill. I usually run at 4.0 (15-minute miles), but I was feeling good so I varied between 4.0, 4.2, and 4.5. It felt easier than expected, and I really sorta felt like a runner. I was able to ignore everyone around me who was running much, much faster than me.
The nausea only set in the last few minutes of my cooldown, so not too bad at all. #runningwhilepregnant #chosegymnotnap #alwaystakethenap #questionablelifechoices5 -

Tomorrow I will run 3 miles in the morning, work a half day and head to the expo for packet pick up for race on Saturday. A cold front is moving in after the rain, so start time temperature on race day is 31 F with a feel like of 24.

19 miles / 50-mile goal
Quick update. I had a really rough day mentally Wednesday. Temperatures were a little warmer, so I decided to run around my neighborhood with goal of running 5 miles (this is still a lot for me). Instead, I ran a little over 3 miles and came home. Temps were in the high 30s with an unexpected constant cold drizzle. I think I overdressed. I had my Columbia Titanium rain jacket as my top layer -- and that sucker is super insulated and heavy (at least for running)! Lesson learned. I don't have other rain jackets, so that's what I had to go with. I need to find a lighter rain jacket for days like that one.
It's frustrating -- I was happy, mentally prepared and motivated during Wednesday's run but I think my legs were still exhausted from the 5 miles I ran Monday. After I came home, I felt discouraged.
My first 5k race in over 2 years is next weekend -- and I think the nerves are getting to me. I set this arbitrary goal of beating 33 minutes because I had been averaging 10:30-11 minute miles over the last couple of weeks. Not sure I'll hit that goal this time. I've only beat that time once before (~32:46) but it was tough and on a treadmill in a controlled climate -- not outside in this weather. lol.
Don't beat yourself up too much. We all have good and bad days. Some of those days we can't control because of various factors (weather, work, life, home, whatever, etc). Re the race, in my view - don't worry about the time - just focus on doing the best you can. Note- You have been training, so you know you can do the distance and we don't know if it will be a sub-zero weather day, poor road conditions, lack of sleep, etc...So to some degree we can't control the good/bad element. All that said, if you go out and do everything you can to push through the mental/physical barriers as best you can that day (i.e. run as comfortably hard as you can the entire time and faster if feasible at the end) the time will take care of itself. The race will be still rewarding for many reasons besides the time result and since you have other races later in the year, you can continue to train and face those challenges one day at a time.
@kevaasen @PastorVincent thanks to you both for the words of encouragement!1 -

The whole idea that people actually cheat at marathons/ultras is fascinating to me. (I may or may not have binge-read all of Derek's posts at marathoninvestigation.com when I first discovered it about a year ago.) I just don't get what having that medal would do for you, other than remembering how you cheated, every single time you look at the thing.3 -

Haven't been able to run properly the last couple of runs. Pain back of leg and lower calf. Thought I strained a hamstring as runs getting progressively slower and in pain at the end. Went to a physio yesterday and the cause of my problem is my lower back. Very tight, poor flexibility and tight hip flexors. Good to know it can be soughted out eventually once the pain in my legs subsided with some gentle stretching.2 -

There is big money in sponsorships, and cash prizes at the bigger races. That is probably what it is ultimately about.1 -
So... glad I got in my run yesterday, since I'm awake tonight listening to my entire world get encased in ice. I wish I could properly enjoy a good freezing rain, but living in Memphis has traumatized me... none of our power lines are buried, and after the last two ice storms, we ended up living in a hotel for three weeks while the city eventually got around to getting our power back on. I'm just really really praying the power lines stay intact this time, I don't have money set aside to deal with a disaster.
Interesting thing about becoming a runner, though... in the past I've been completely trapped by winter precipitation (Memphis has no snow plows, and very limited salt crews, so streets become unsafe instantly) but I just noticed on Google Earth that my gym, grocery, a Starbucks, and a dozen restaurants are 1.2 miles away. I know I can walk that in all but the most adverse conditions and I'm pretty sure in my trail shoes I could run it if the ice isn't too bad, even on what's supposed to be a rest day. Now, there's a question as to whether anything would be open when I got there, since employees tend to ditch work at the first sign of ice here, but I could get there.4 -

Me too. I'm an average runner and if the conditions are right, I can sometimes place in my age-group in local races. But the thought of cutting a corner to ensure a win, is just weird to me.
And I went on a binge-fest reading everything I could find about Kip Litton.
