It's not so daunting that way. One step at a time.
Machka in OzI'm having trouble getting motivated about this project for the class I'm currently taking. I need to have something ready for next Monday and then finish it a few days later, but my desire to work on it is low.
However, I did do some work tonight and should have the first step or maybe even second step done tomorrow.
Machka in Oz
I have to take my own advice when it comes to this project ... get working on it one step at a time!!

I started my weight loss journey on MFP with an approach of "just for today". Gradually I made changes until I reached a set of practices that worked. At first I had periods of watching the clock waiting for the next meal I had planned. In time, the practices became habits and now are a standard part of my life like brushing my teeth or bathing.9

Rye- Is there a high school or junior high school near you? I remember my days as a drama parent/booster, there were a few men and women from the community, who had no ties to the school, that would come in and help us with set design, make up, hair, costumes. They were fantastic and it was a way they could help and stay involved in the community doing something they enjoyed. They also need people to do things like costume "laundry". Or script copying, etc. Things that you can do at home when it is convenient for you. Or think about your passion and volunteer to help during an event. Like an art event. Communities always need some one to help organize and set up those events.
KJ (Kelly)
Thanks for thinking of me KJ! My environs (say 1.5 mile radius) is pretty bleak tho. Homes, churches and basic retail like a supermarket, dry cleaners, several liquor stores and gas stations. A wonderful strip of restaurants and coffee shops near the hospital and the hospital district. (Dr offices and pharmacies as far as the legs can walk, lol. ). High school drama sounds lovely, but I can not sew, draw, paint or do anything I can think of that could be useful with my motor coordination difficulties.
I sound ungrateful and like a ‘negative Nancy’. But really I’m not, I’m just highly realistic. Take weight training. Wonderful advice here in this thread and on MFP in general. But my disabilities are such that most of it can’t work for me. So realistically I had to figure out the why the recommendations worked, what good they did, and invent my own workout that tries to accomplish the same things safely for me. (I should be able to save the money to see a personal trainer sometime this spring so I hope to even get an official word on the program’s efficacy (inefficiency for sure as I am limited to isolation exercising with weights, but ultimately the same muscle workout).) So, I welcome input like yours as the more I get the more likely I am to figure something out for my peculiar situation.
Step by step vs. Big leap I think the step by step approach y’all discuss works well for most people. Some odd types like myself, tho, would not be well served by it. Unless I commit completely it is way to easy for me to blow off the small changes. My diet last year started off to a frustratingly poor and slow start, Four months with less than 10 pound loss to show for 100+ 1200 calorie days and lots of exercise had me on the verge of giving up. Only because I had committed (to myself and to others) to get to a healthy weight did I continue. I guess I’m just one of the “in for a penny, in for a pound” types.
MIL needs some help, got to go now.

My Moto: “ Never give up, never surrender!” (Galaxy Quest, 2014).
Off to the doctor for allergy testing and to review results. I will also get order for ‘further testing ‘ on my left breast.
Did 2 miles in one walk yesterday. Still trudging along. Ate badly however- 4 tacos, brownie, and small bag of popcorn. Oh, well, today is another day.

Rye ~ I'm glad you have experimented and found what works best for you. We are all individuals with different bodies that react differently to food and exercise.

Machka - My left knee doesn't track properly and I first became aware of it at 16 years old when it blew up like a football during school celebrations. I had endless investigations at hospitals etc and nobody could find anything wrong. Very frustrating as it stopped me doing so much and that leg got very weak, so eventually I had to pick it up with my hands to get into the car. Eventually I went to see a sports physio because I had tried a bit of mild dancing at the gym and it blew up again. She knew exactly what it was straight away! (Stupid doctors) Ever since I have been working on strengthening it and do exercises every day. It is now usable and I am able to shuffle/run on it, but it is not perfect. Grrrrrrrrrr!
KJ - I use my chart on the fridge as a visual reminder of my progress with AF days and calculating my intake. It really works for me. I like seeing all my gold stars.
Made my ice cream, though DH and I cut up each chocolate chip individually! I've also mashed the neeps and tatties, though I will add cream, butter and chives tomorrow. I won't be having a large portion!

Halelujah! A few days ago Joe asked me to get the address of the eye Dr, our MD recommended on his "homework" sheet. Of course I read the whole thing. Turns out Joe is supposed to eat the same 1 C of raw celery that I am. SO... instead of TELLING Joe what to do, I prepped a bowl of raw celery, cauliflower and carrots equivalent to 4 oz celery with a little cup of dip. Said "I saw your homework has same "eat a cup of celery every day" as mine. I'll prep yours when I prep mine. I eat mine at the end of the day, but you can eat yours whenever you want. To my amazement, he took it, said "Thank You" and ate it right away! At 06:45! Soooo much better than nagging
Machka Scone recipe, YUM. And lots of great mixing/baking tips. Will have to get out my calculator tho', degrees C, cm apart, etc Looked at the veggie Scampi but since I do not like tomatoes or zucchini, I'll pass. I really don't like most vegetables cooked, prefer them raw. The only "new" veggie recipe I've tried so far this month was Garlicky Roasted Mushrooms and it was delish! Today will adapt the chickpea curry recipe and that will make 2 "One bit at a time" Amen sister. That and NYKaren's/Barbie's micro actions get/keep me going.
Heather "still struggle with drinking just one glass of alcohol. None is fine, so I do that most nights with my AF beer." I'm struggling as you can imagine, but my new regime is no alcohol on days when I go out. So far I'm 3 for 3. Triangular scones, aha, that's what I'll do. Forgive me but I love currant scones ;} Your savoury scones sound yummy too! "Cut up each chocolate chip individually"? :noway:
pip such satisfied smiles in the sheraton pic. Oooh the golden, what a love!
Rita being called back for additional tests IS worrying. Please do not give up! Like Lanette said, your walks out in that beautiful clear fresh air are the best. We try because it matters, we matter... even when we can't see it... just my 2 cents.
Lanette you're a mind reader, Looked at pip's pic and thought now THERE are two satisfied smiles
Joyce holding good thoughts for your Dr appt today.
Sharron Brava for the 5 miles!
Terry "its fun" that's work at its best!
Becca Oww your poor hubs! Thanks for finding humor to share with us in the midst of all your worries. Holy Sodium Shamoly indeed. When I go over on salt I can count on at least 2 lb gain the next day. Coddled eggs? yuck
Vickie "...the only steps around our house..." Brilliant!
Barbie your line dance teaching might feel self interested, but it is a valuable volunteer service. And slug is NEVER a word I think of in conjunction with you! Look forward to having healthy practices become habits.
Rye Looked up potassium in walnuts and 1 c has 353 mg but its cals would never fit into my allowance ;}
Evie "brushed my teeth instead" Well done!
Penny do you eat all 500 g veggies raw? They must be horribly expensive/hard to get at the North Pole?
Allie heart filled with "good advice" for you but nothing I can say will change anything. ((hugs)) from one who's been there.
Kelly love your stone jar visual! Do you do any therapeutic exercises for your knee?
Ack blew WAY past the 20 mins, time to break fast and dash to T'ai Chi.
Mindful and WARM Hugs to all,

Well, hello everyone and wishing a blessed new year to all. I am starting late in 2018, but I plan on starting at least. I have not been on here for a long, long time and my body shows it ! (This is an old photo by the way : ) I had thought that I could do it on my own, but I know that I need to log everything I put into my body and log it as well as exercise on a continuous basis. My problem is inconsistency and motivation, since my husband passed away 3 years ago.
I try to eat a healthier diet, but I am not exercising as I should, I know. I am starting to get back to the YMCA where I work out, but it is so difficult to do all this for me. I plan on doing what I know that I should do though, and hopefully, I can get help from you all.7 -
Happy Belly Laugh Day!
"Belly Laugh Day is a day for having a good chuckle at anything at all. Did you know that laughter has been known to cause the tissue lining our blood vessels to expand and increase blood flow? This in turn makes you feel more positive, boosts your immune system and generally just makes us feel happier! Let’s get people laughing anywhere and everywhere!"
Karen - Wednesday is my weigh day so I stepped on the scale today for the first time in a month. The news wasn't as bad as I'd feared - I only gained a pound during my time away. I put the quinoa bowls on the list for another dinner this week!
Terry - My mother-in-law has a recipe for rhubarb bread pudding that's absolutely fabulous! Probably a good thing I can get my hands on the stuff very often...
Rita - Most of the time I don't enjoy exercise but afterwards I feel good about having done it. I've started reading a lot about loving yourself, and one of the things suggested was to think about "showing you love yourself." That's been pretty helpful, so at night before I go to sleep I take a minute to consciously think about the things I did to show myself some love that day.
Becca - Hey, pat yourself on the back for Day 2! I'm sorry you and your husband are going through all that. Hope the medical team has some options that will make things easier for you both. Oh, and about the soup... I have yet to find a canned soup that both tastes good to me and has a reasonable sodium content. Yikes is right! Next winter I think maybe I'll try making big batches of soup early in the season and freezing them in smaller portions.
Vicki - I've met a lot of CMA folks in my travels. Nice people.
Heather - I keep a bar of 85% chocolate in my desk drawer for "emergencies." Every now and then if I'm having a particularly challenging day, I'll break off a square and take a minute for deep breathing and chocolate.
Allie - One of the things my cousin (who lost his dad early last year) said to me was that you think you've got to hurry and get all that stuff done. His advice was not to hurry - to remember there's time to deal with all that stuff. We are lucky that Dad had everything pretty much in order and readily accessible, but it's still going to take a lot of time to sort through everything related to the estate.
I'm just trying to keep it together this week, and plan ahead for the weekend when I have to go back to Houston. We've got to dig into the box of financial paperwork and get contact info so I can start calling and pulling together a list of assets. We're still waiting on the death certificates so that's about all I can do right now. I also have to find the title to Dad's car, which I apparently absent-mindedly set down somewhere and it got packed up with his stuff in the storage unit. Sheesh...
Hope you all get a good belly laugh today!

Penny do you eat all 500 g veggies raw? They must be horribly expensive/hard to get at the North Pole?
Barbara, you asked a while ago if we had greenhouses at the North Pole. I didn't answer then because I was frantically busy and just skimming. Now I'm still frantically busy, but so exhausted I'm taking some time off to procrastinate.
We DO have one greenhouse in our town, and the Russian settlement of Barentsburg has one too. But ours is very small, and even the Russians' big one doesn't produce much. Essentially everything we eat comes from the mainland. There's a freighter once a week for non-perishables. Perishables are flown in, either on the mail plane or with the regular airliner.
Yeah, the veggies are expensive, but so is everything else. A quart of milk costs about 5 USD, and a quart of OJ costs 6 USD. :noway: But we have to eat. It's a case of Suck it up, Buttercup!
And yes, I eat them all raw, and I love doing it! Keeps my mouth busy and gets me plenty of vitamins, minerals and fiber. Win-win!

NSV - started exercising again after being sick. Had record hula hoop stretch of 4.5 minutes without it falling. Previous record of almost 60 seconds shattered!
(But yeah those bruises!)
I can not think of any other exercise (except swimming) that I like so much (at all? Lol) Maybe because I don’t feel clumsy and my fine motor control difficulties don’t seem to come in play. I felt strong and graceful- like I do in the water!6 -
Barbara - Having visited Penny in her Arctic fastness, and, having been taken by her on a tour of the town, I can assure you that they have a lovely supermarket with LOADS of lovely fresh stuff. Longyearbyen is very civilised with every shopping delight and café you can think of. They also have an Olympic sized pool. She is not at all deprived. The cost of living is high, but it is also on the mainland of Norway. They have to have "tickets" to buy alcohol though, but not wine I think, as the miners who were the original inhabitants of the town, we're not considered to be tempted by wine. I may have misremembered that. She gave us a bottle of their locally brewed beer to give to my son, who is a brewer.

This is our first sight of Longyearbyen when we woke up on the morning of our visit. The view from our room. To say I was excited is a huge understatement!

Hi beautiful ladies,
Ithree1eight, my DH lost a lot of weight when he was in Spain for 9 months. He ate a Mediterranean diet.
Machka, love the saying. I love your approach by week. Makes sense. “ How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” Good job with the candy too. Have you seen a regular dr about your knees and foot?
Evelyn, fingers crossed that your weight in goes well.
Katla, when you go to hire a cleaner, you could ask for references.
Evelyn, you should be proud of yourself. Good job staying away from food and brushing your teeth instead.
Heather, you can get low sodium V8. Not sure how much lower it is. I usually get that. When I did the 8 week course with a nutritionist she recommended the tart cherry just for inflammation.
Allie, we all grieve in our way at our own time. You will go through the grieving process when you are ready. ((Hugs to all of you who have lost someone recently).
Lisa, I’m stressed just reading what you must do! Breath girl!
Kelley, hope your knee feels better soon. Could you do another baby on a short-term trial basis?
Allie, check with the town clerk or probate court. as they may have a copy of your dad’s will as it needs to be filed.
Pip, your furry friend is cute.
Rye, Check with y our local United Way as some organizations have work that can be done at home.
Rita, good luck at the dr.
Leamlass1, welcome to the group. Sounds like you know what needs to be done which I think is half the battle. For me, I started with really small steps where I knew I could succeed. That way I started on a positive note. Then slowly added things. I started in May of last year and am only now starting to add exercise. I’ve lost 40lbs. Some days are good and some aren’t but you just keep plugging along.
Yvonne, I like “Happy Belly Laugh Day”. We all could use some belly laughs. Only a pound is great while you were away. It’s so much harder to stay on track with you are away. ((Hugs as you work to get everything in order for your dad))
Well going to try something new at work today. We have a gym but I sweat so much that putting my clothes back on and going back to work is miserable. So I’ve decided to try walking in the isles around the corporation. We aren’t that big so will have to do a few laps and stairs. Hopefully, I’ll enjoy it and not feel too embarrassed passing by people a few times. They will probably think I just nuts. I’ll let you know how it goes. Still doing the kettlebells and yes my thighs and butt still hurt.

.SueBDew in TX , you were brave! I remember the kanji for my stop looked like this:
Fat man skinny man watching TV squatting sitting
At least that was the rhyme we made up for it!
Nothing like looking at the train system map saying aloud, " fat man skinny man...nope, fat man skinny man watching...nope".
Haha! My eldest son grew up in Japan from age 2 to 4, and he would ride the train and under his breath he would be going, "choo-choo", as quietly as he could. He loved Thomas the Tank Engine at the time!

Penny, awe, I am amazed too! Well way back almost two years ago, our second ERCP was a rendezvous procedure! So one team did the endoscopy and another team went in thru the liver, and met at his bile duct. It was quite a deal!
Also over the years I have learned that the pancreas is one touchy, organ! Doctors hate even going near it!!
Becca2 -
Becca,”Well husband had his 7th ERCP last Tuesday at OHSU, and it went OK. The docs go in via throat ( an endoscopy), to the bile duct, change out the stents, putting new ones in. He tolerates it all well, but he is sore from being manipulated!”
My DH recently had out patient gall bladder surgery. The surgeons said he came thru in good shape with BP & heart rate just fine. However, they found so many stones,he needed endoscopy surgery to clean out the bile duct & insert a stent.Since he did so well & was still out, they reccomended it be done now. So it was & 4 days later he was dismissed.
6 wks later,he went back to have the stent removed.Being tossed around was his main complaint, felt bruised & beat up.He got a great report at final check. We’d never heard of this surgery........guess you never know once Drs are involved. It’s amazing what medicine can do. Wishing the best for your husband. The 7th time? WOW !
Pat in Ohio
Pat, funny story.... My husband had his liver transplant in 2014. We got an after care summary, after his first checkup that read. "Liver transplant going well, gal bladder properly absent". We both look at each other and ask, when did you get your gallbladder out?? He calls up his Mom, " Mom when did I get my gallbladder out,"? She's like, "you'd think I would've remembered, but I don't". So we call the doctors office and they inform us that the liver and gallbladder are kind of a joint thing so we removed that when we did the transplant. Um wouldn't that be something you could have told us. It looks like you were in there and decided oh what the heck, since we're here.....lol
Most of his ERCPs have had some discomfort. The pain stems from the body being over stimulated. Once the doctor used the word "jammed", and they had not given him much pain meds. So from leaving the hospital to getting home, it had ballooned into pain he hgad never experienced before. I had nothing at home to combat it! I finally just took him to emergency. Now we tell the nurses that come in to talk with you prior to having the procedure about helping you with plain, putting you to sleepo etc, we tell them to work close with the doctor. When she has to really jam a stent in, that pain med needs to be increased. He has practically jumped off the table so that's where all the soreness comes from.
I hope your husband has an easy road. Hugs!

Terry - You are doing brilliantly. You have lost 40 lbs and now getting serious about exercise. Great! Don't worry about the funny looks. I get them all the time when I'm out "shuffling".
I couldn't go today - it's been pouring all day. The bottom lane is flooded. That was the original reason we bought a four wheel drive that is higher off the ground - driving through floods of water round here.

Becca - thank you for the info on the ERCP. Your DH has been through a lot - sounds like it's been quite an anatomy lesson! Interesting but challenging to actually live through it. So glad his medical team is terrific; they sound very responsive and protective of their patients. Big HUGS to you and him and I'm praying the next procedure goes without a hitch. I like coddywomple and have been on that track myself at times!
Kate, was that the procedure they did on you to remove the gallstone?
Katla - enjoy your trip! We'd love to see photos of the grands!
Allie - hope you can find you dad's will. Just do the best you can; it will be OK. (((HUGS))))
In my family, dad helped us find Mom's will after she died so we had an idea of where to look for his. DH and I had ours done by a local elder attorney - we had the powers of attorney done at the same time. The original is stored in a vault at another attorney's office which is a good idea - only the original is accepted for probate in our state I guess. We did give our executor a copy and she has copies of the powers of attorney as well since she is named on the documents. And, it does say on the copies of the will where the original is! Our attorney thinks of everything. It's probably time for us to update these documents.
My visit to the doc yesterday was good. She wasn't excited about my higher BP - as along as I'm still getting readings in the 130's & 120's / 70, it's fine. The rare 150's and high 140's /80 are a bit high but only concerning if they stay that way all the time. Funny, when I first started going to her, she was more "by the book" with me. Meaning - I went on BP medicine to aim for the 120/80. As she has gotten to know me and my lifestyle (eating, exercise) she's better at tailoring her ideas to what works best for me.
We had time to talk a little about the "Broken Brain" - some of the concepts. She hasn't seen it but told me some science about why the ideas of exercise and keeping our minds active with games and such could help forestall dementia. She's not really a "functional medicine" doc but I think she's a great resource. She said the fact that I'm always asking her questions about how and why our bodies work helps keep my brain active. Here I thought I was just being a pest, lol.
That's the latest for now-
Lanette

Barbie, for some strange reason, when I think of adjectives to describe you, slug does not come to mind.
Rye, do not take lightly the importance and impact of just being a friend to someone in need can have, even if it is an online friend that you are there for when needed. There are many, many ways we can be contributing members of society. Everyone must find their own path.
Allie, hugs and prayers continue for you.
It is amazing and sad that so many of you are struggling with husband’s health issues and/or issues of your own. Sometimes I think the husband issues are even harder than our own because we can’t control how they choose to manage their health. My thoughts are with all of you as well.
Finally, we have someone else coming to give us an estimate for redoing our bathrooms. We’ve been dealing with this since October. Apparently, the good folks are booked solid. They have enough new construction jobs that they aren’t interested in remodels. Maybe this one will work out.
Later, my friends!

Hi Gals,
Rye – I wonder if there is an organization that would need someone to make phone calls or write emails/letters? I try to write elected officials once a month regarding causes I care about.
Great job on the hula hooping! I can’t get it to work at all!!!
Heather - Thanks for the info on Longyearbyen - I would say this would be on the top of my bucket list…
Some may remember that for Christmas my mom paid for waterproof work boots for me, I had ordered them and they came in yesterday, I wore them to walk the dog today, and I had warm comfy feet for the first time in a very long time, winter has been a challenge for me for years! $140 for boots has been too steep for my budget and for 2 years I have been looking at the thrift stores where I do all my shopping and had not found any. I will be listing these in my grateful for list for a long long time!

I'd agree - check with your local (his local) Probate Court, in some states you can keep them on file there for a fee.
Lenora3 -
Rye, you mentioned a hospital near you. Does it have a need for volunteers? Ours has volunteers who run the gift shop and those who help people figure out how to get to where they need to be. The gift shop also donates all proceeds to a society that raises money for so called "extras" for the hospital. Things that would otherwise be beyond the financial scope of the hospital.
Allie, hang in there. It will get better. My hope for you and your family is that the service will bring a bit of closure. I know it helped me, being surrounded by friends and family who grieved with me.
Rita, good luck with your tests.
Joyce, how did your visit with your Dr go?
Kelly, sounds like you have a big decision in front of you! Good luck with that also! I certainly admire people who are willing and able to look after our young uns. I was done when ours grew up, although I'd probably do it for our grandson!
Weigh in was this am, I did lose the pound that I gained last week, but it didn't take any friends with it, so clearly I need to be much more vigilant with my food intake if I'm to get to where I want to be.
Hope everyone has a good one!
