Is a calorie equal to a calorie?

It may be more than an urban legend. It was the leading clue in an Encyclopedia Brown case, IIRC. (Donald J. Sobol occasionally messed up, but I don't think this was one of the times.)1

Actually, it does work. There is enough oil in the peanut butter to break down the gum and make it less sticky, thus easy removal. Ice also works (and creates much less of a mess).1 -
Well, I wish we had known PB had been invented the time I got silly putty stuck in my hair when I was about 7.
Maybe not, I ended up with a lifelong love of very short hair after having to have it all cut off.

Huh, well there you go!1

Although IIRC the difference isn't as dramatic as that image portrays. Don't ask me for sources though because lazy AF.

I am dumber for having read that. Not as dumb as some of the arguments in that thread, but dumber.1 -

I remember that one. That's MFP Gold right there!I have a question for all the smart people on here and I would love an answer.
1. How come some people can pick up a 10lb pack of copying paper with no problem, but can't pick up a 10lb dumbbell?

^ That's the part I was trying to remember earlier, the "copy paper" discussion. That elevated the level of derp to previously unseen heights!2 -

you may be interested in watching this documentary (That Sugar Film" of a man who changed his diet to consume the SAME number of calories eating high fat/low carb and switching to what the general population perceives as a standard 'healthy' diet of the same number of calories. this 'standard' included sugars/carbohydrates. its very interesting and is just one source i have seen/read that proves a calories is NOT a calorie. you can find this on netflix. prolly other places as well on the web. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3892434/

the truth of this hurts sooooo badly.3 -
Thanks for linking that thread; highly entertaining. But one thing that really made me chuckle was someone bothering to woo a post from 2011.4

What'smore entertaining is that the person who did that probably didn't even realize that the post was from 2011. Although, I have to admit being caught a few times and learned that on MFP, zombie invasions are real so you have to watch lol.3 -

Yeah, I've been caught that way before! It's easy to see the date of the thread on the desktop site, but on the phone app it's tucked away at the bottom of the comment, which most people (me included) skip over to get to the next comment.0 -
You know what's sad- I think that was largely a language issue- not a comprehension issue. I think.0

dun matter where the calorie comes from , it's a calorie.
PS ... unless its a kcal vs a calorie .... hee, hee ... cause a kcal is a lot smaller in energy value.

Yes and no. The bioavailability of each macro is different. Carbs are .93/1, fat is .97/1, protein .69/1, fiber about .60/1, alcohol is 1/1, if I remember correctly. In the microcosm not much of a difference between carbs and fats, but multiply that by a year and it will matter.14 -
Average availability is already accounted for in calorie counts.6

I believe you are trying to do a total to net conversion but even then it depends on a lot. For example, a rare steak has less net calories availed than a well done steak and whole wheat have far less net calories available than white flour. Cooked foods have more net calories than raw foods. It's not just about the macro but the food that it comes from but that's, again, conflating the topics.4 -

A calorie is a calorie I think that has been clearly established by all the comments. What’s different are the nutrients. You can eat empty calories or you can fuel your body with the things you eat. You know the saying: you are what you eat. While eating a clean and nutritious diet you fuel your body to function right, have more energy and feel good. I liked that example of a mile being a mile... hey I rather take the mile with umbrella and drink at 75 degree weather than the crawling across glass. Same with your calories... make them count and let them make you feel good. Calories from fiber help you poop, calories from protein help build muscles, calories from orios give you a sugar crash and increase your sugar cravings and that in turn makes it harder to stick to your calorie goal.19

People vary, but in the context of a diet where my needs for fiber and protein are being met, adding 1-2 Oreos to my lunch doesn't give me a sugar crash and it doesn't give me cravings.
So maybe it would be more accurate to say that Oreos do that for you rather than make sweeping claims about what they are doing to me?13
