@MobyCarp So a person could buy their way into Boston? That doesn't seem fair.
I'm thinking about saving up to go skiing/snowboarding. But that'll pass when the Olympics are over. I still have Big Sur half on my buck list. I gotta get better at walking first though1 -

Holy kitten was it icy out tonight. I planned to run one of my shorter routes where I can just tack on more laps but bailed on that route when I fell about 1/3 of the way along. It was so slippery I couldn't get enough traction to get back up right away! I'm not hurt although I expect I will be stiffer than usual tomorrow. Anyway, I doubled back to the main road/path, found a section about .25 miles long (400m) that had a bit more snow and a bit less ice, and ran laps until I reached my distance target, then gingerly slipped and sloshed my way to my door.
I'm really hoping things are better tomorrow. I may grab a scoop when I go out tomorrow and sand part of the path as there is a sand box/station right at the start of the path.

Has anyone every done one of the inflatable 5ks?
I did one umm two years ago, I think. I put it in the same category as the color runs, in that if you want to race, it’s not the event for you. If you want an experience and don’t mind walking as you dodge people, and wait for obstacles to clear, it is great, especially with friends.
My only other advice is that if it is, or has been at all wet, that plastic gets wicked slick. I went sliding, and falling feet up in the air movie style on one of the early deals because I was slow in figuring that out.

Every time I see this tag line, I think about you being a charity fund raiser. Except that's not the path to Disney World, it's the path to Boston for people who can't BQ on race results. (Alternatively, you might say I have to run a marathon fast to get to Boston because I'm no good at raising funds.)
Well, I am looking as at probably a few thousand dollars to fly there, stay in the park, and run the Dopey - for two people. It is a big chunk of change.
Boston is not tempting to me, but Disney Dopey sounds like fun race and challenge.
I might have to start selling cookies door to door though. Rough start to the year already.4 -

It was another pretty nice day here in San Diego. Very good running weather, which I am really going to miss. Tomorrow the month is half over and I am at 55% of my goal, and currently sitting at 3.66 miles per day on average (5.89 km/day). I have a hard time thinking in km so this is a good exercise for me.
Tomorrow will be a rest day as I spend most of it traveling.

Everywhere else it's just Tuesday, but here it is Marci Gras! Thankful for the end of Carnival season but especially thankful for the end of King Cake season.
To Day was a State Holiday for me, so I slept in and ran late this morning. What a day a difference makes - sunny, hot and humid weather today. Most of y’all just want winter to end, I just want the weather to make up its mind what season it wants to be in Louisiana!
To catch up on my monthly goal for my miles - I am thinking about running on Friday morning before my race on Saturday instead of it being a Rest day. I have ran the day before a race and as long as I finish 24 hours before race start I seem to be okay. Does anybody run day before race day? Only a 10K.
@HRKinchen - I will be purchasing a -ish shirt in March!

I've done shakeout runs the day before races, like 3 miles the day before a half, and been fine. I just take it easy the day before.1 -
I had a great run today doing intervals. Based on my watch times I managed to run several at 7min ace, but they are short, less than a quarter mile. I am hoping to extend the length over time. The best part is it felt great. Tomorrow will be another story between the intervals and then strength training today with a focus on legs! Good thing tomorrow will be a rest day with a good walk only.
@katharmonic - this was the perfect time to be in San Diego! Glad you were able to get some runs in there!
@PastorVincent - I think everyone should run at least one Disney race - they are amazingly well organized and the only race I have been in where the picture lines were longer than the bathroom/porta potty lines... come to think about it, it is the ONLY race I have been in with a picture line They are large with lots of non-runners but if you go into it as just a fun race and to enjoy all that they have to offer you will have a great time. There is a Disney wine weekend I wouldn't mind running but I think the time change would kill me unless we went the week before.
@Elise4270 - I would love to run Big Sur too but I would really need to get some serious training on hills!

Feb 13: 4 mi
4 miles easy on trails - today was another first for me, my first back to back run days. Weather is supposed to be rainy all week and our trails will probably be underwater so I wanted to get at least one trail run out of the way. Parts of the trail are already underwater - see the stairs across the creek? That's the other side of the trail we usually run, and that creek is the trail. It's usually a dry gully. Um... no. We turned off to the side and tried a trail which was marked closed, and managed to get our miles in although it was muddy.
My husband says, "Does that count as 'technical'?"
Went to a Cajun restaurant and had a big old pot of crabs after running, in honor of Mardi Gras. I continue to love what running does for my glucose levels, was able to eat a big ear of corn and two red potatoes and stay in reasonable levels. Also, I'm giving up socializing on MFP for Lent, except for this thread! I had to really think about this one - my diet is working too well for me to want to mess with it, and social media has been cutting into time I should be doing other things, so that was a no-brainer - except that I feel like this thread is useful to me and keeps me accountable. So you guys get an exception.11 -

There are around 6000 slots reserved for charity runners. They need to be involved with one of the sponsoring charities, and I think they need to raise a minimum of $5000. So yes, if you have that kind of money to throw around on top of the entry fee and the hotel (not an issue for locals, I suppose), you could buy your way into Boston. But I think the vast majority of the charity runners really do the hard work of doing fund raising for a cause they believe in. In my case, raising $5K for charity would be harder than just running a BQ marathon to get in.4 -

Ran this morning, the first run on my Hal Higdon marathon plan. On the scale of good/bad runs it was a seriously bad run. I kept stopping to walk, I discovered little niggles of pain in all kinds of places (like suddenly my lower back?) and it was so slow it’s pathetic. But a few things I am consoling myself with –
I ran in the evening last night, so had barely 12 hours between runs. I can do two run days in a row happily enough, but need to leave longer between them
I’m not well. I wake with headaches and a massive sore throat, and have a contrast MRI scheduled for this week to see what’s going on around my thyroid. The fact that I am out running is an achievement.
Slow is relative. I can still make the cut-off for the marathon I have planned in June. Although if the entire distance feels like today then it will be a horrible day out with plenty of tears.
Not every run will be like this. I will have good run days.
And finally – I am a slow runner. I may never get faster than 11/12 minute miles. I am going to be a back-of-the packer, out on the course for a long time. I need to accept this, and choose races where I get to enjoy the scenery since I’ll be out there so long. Other runner may pass me but they are not beating me, because I am only running against myself.

I typically run the day before any race. Even a marathon. I work hard to keep it very easy, and short, but I will do much worse race day if I have not run in the last 24 hours.

Yeah, I have a much better chance of pushing for a BQ time than raising money like that. I mean I only have to run what, 20% faster? heh.
I just have no current plans or desire to run Boston.1 -
Did a combo run using elliptical and treadmill.(most on treadmil) Used the eliptical to warm up and strech out achillies tendon for 20 minutes then did 4 tempo paced miles on treadmil. The tendon feels much better still some stiffness but the improvement is very noticable. Giving up facebook for lent; thought of giving this up too but decided not. I enjoyed a "luck of the Irish" milk shake last night as my Mardi Gras celebration.

I don't run the day before a race. But that's only because I worry about doing something really stupid like twist my ankle, or get an irritating hot spot or blister. I use the elliptical instead.1 -
