If I could give the best advice, it would be not to wait till you are old to make healthy changes. Disease and pain stopped me for too many years. Now I can only do so much. For now, I walk and bend as much as I can without taking medications. Loosing weight has helped, but I've still a ways to go so I can have a better life.

Laura - sounds like a great day with your princess! She's lucky to have you . Kudos on the weight loss!!
Are you able to do any LIGHT weight lifting - dumb bells or light ankle weights? If not a doctor or physical therapist might be able to help you. Several of us on this list started very light and slow with joint injuries - some joints have gotten better, some are limiting as to the amount of weight but it's a start.
I started light ankle weights after a round of very painful knee bursitis - and it hasn't bothered me since. Have "tricky" shoulders so keep some weights at 5 lbs per the physical therapist and just add another set.
Good luck and enjoy your day.

Lanette- fantastic advice. You are very inspirational!

it has been a rather busy week already! I am prepping for a 2 hour workshop about Essential Oils that will take place on Saturday. Work has been somewhat busy (police work, so there somewhat busy and insane) and still wrestling with what date I am picking for my retirement and having to make all those phone calls to let those people aware that I am retiring.
The husband can't wait for me to retire! I am looking forward to my retirement but in these last couple of years I have done a lot of community work, school talks, talks with senior groups and so on....I love being in the community and it helps in the long run....I wonder what I will be doing to fulfill that need. My oils business is in the infancy stage and only getting better. The hubby and I have discussed doing a book and going on a self-help tour with it but so far that is just talk.....but a very appealing idea.
On thing that I will be looking forward to retirement is that I will have the time to do what I want, what we want without the time restraints.6 -
Hello Ladies!

I hate to tell you but if you were to eat everything but the hashbrowns you would be eating a keto diet and you would lose an awful lot of fat especially belly fat. You just named one of my favorite meals! Most people are under the misconception that fat is not good for you. However it has been proven that it is essential for brain health and lubricates joints and blood vessels! And it tastes great specially butter! Another thing, excess fat does not turn into fat like excess carbs do.
Mary from Arizona
Yup! I'm with Mary. My meals are FULL of fat. They taste lovely and I've dropped more inches using fat as fuel than carbs ever did. I ran my marathon fueled on fat (could add in more carbs because of the extra exercise and not get out of ketosis) Plus I don't get the munchies. Fat fills you up. Keto has been the best thing I've found. My husband does it also and his blood work has come back fantastic after being on keto. Can't tell if mine has changed because I've never had my cholesterol or anything checked. Ignorance is bliss in my book (no history of any heart disease in family plus no indications).

Becca, I thought of you the other day when I was watching a old Project Runway All Stars. They needed to design and make clothes for their nudist models.
Jean, welcome to the group. I been where you are and I know you can do it. For me it is all about tracking and planning. Having a plan for the day where you know exactly what you will be eating helped me. Stress is hard for everyone, but if you don’t take care of yourself, you can’t take care of anyone else. I know it is easier said than done. So visit often and let the group help. BTW where are you from. Knowing where people are from makes it easier to keep track of everyone.
Laura, I got my kettlebells at Walmart. If you go there y9ou could try them out and see if they hurt your hands. They have some pretty light weight ones.
Sunkist, now is a good time to get your plans in place for after you retire so you can hit the ground running. That’s what I’ve started with my chainmaille jewelry. I’m working on getting pictures for a website.
Beth, Good for you doing well yesterday. If you did it yesterday, you most certainly can do it today. You go girl!

Does anyone have any information or experience with St. Johns Wort being used along with Holy Basil?
Is Holy Basil better for treating anxiety than St. Johns Wort?
Can they be used together?
It is for a family member who stuggles with both depression and anxiety attacks. They refuse to take any medicines but will consider herbal. They've been taking St. Johns Wort and do notice a difference with mood and depression being lessened but it hasn't helped with the anxiety which can become debilitating at times. Holy Basil (sometimes called Tulsi) is supposed to be good for anxiety.
I've looked on the internet and not really found clear answers.2 -
Can't remember if I told you or not but DD date went well. He is a couple of years younger than her (she's 35 this July) and is wanting to get married and start a family. Which is way better than the last one she was with that was about 17 years older and after 3 years still wouldn't commit. They will probably get together this Friday. The text every day. She is feeling better but not 100% yet.
Starting to cloud up and we are suppose to get rain this afternoon. Still pretty warm.

Laura- I have similar issues to you with my back neck and joints. I believe that the kettle bell swing would be beneficial to your joints and with the weight it will help increase bone density. Even with your knee replacements I know that you need to exercise them and this is actually a very slow purposeful movement that would possibly benefit your whole body. You could start out with a lightweight dumbbell and perform the goblet squats and the Russian kettle bell swing with perfect form to see how it affects your body. Like any new exercise you start at first you may have muscle repair that you will feel, if you have pain in the joints adjust your stance. sometimes I may experience pain in my knee or my hip and I just have to adjust my feet. Maybe they are pointing out too far even just one of them and I just move the direction of my toe and that will usually always get rid of any pain for me. You can even just go through the motions with out any weight at first. This is a link to my success story that has videos on correct form and information on the program that I follow.

Terry in VT,
OK I'm confused!!! Haha! Clothing for nudists? Is that a mental thing? Heehee. I am always nude under my clothes.
The rules were so misleading regarding coverage at our old resort. It was a clothing optional resort, so while walking or running around, you could wear clothes. In the pool area it was strictly nude. No suits to accentuate your figure. When I played tennis with my boys, I was nude, but saw many ladies wearing sports bras. My sons were such silly guys, they would change the tennis rules. So after they hit the ball their rule was to sit down. Then the other person would stand up, race to hit it, and that's how they played! It was a riot to watch!! At the evening dances, the deal was to put on more clothes! Most wore, sexy wear items. Think of a bad Hugh Hefner party... My youngest called what I wore, invisible clothing, because it was lacy teddies most of the time. Crazy utopia!
This morning school was cancelled, but by 8am the roads seemed clear. We delayed a bit, going to the laundromat. Stopped by the grocery store and walked every isle, getting some exercise, and buying some items. I bought two huge tomatoes, and an avocado. Yummy sandwiches are in my future. Also bought an Asian salad kit. I will spread that out to two meals.
Husband just sashayed thru, singing old tunes with dirty lyrics...shakes my head. He is a crazy guy, but life is never boring! He is going to be an old man I will have to say shuuuush to a lot, I think.

Marcekynh there are a number of essential oils that can be used for depression and anxiety. The first step is aroma...what scent/smell brings a calmness, balance to your loved one.
then it is a matter of finding what works....diffusing and applying the right oil can help. My hubby suffers from PTSD and Anxiety (his go-to oils are Peppermint, Cedarwood, White Fir and Arborvitae), he usually has his bottle with him and at the very onset, he opens, inhales and thinks of a safe place to be (for him it is usually in the back woods)

Laura Hi, welcome and you should get some good suggestions here. So many of us struggle with physical limitations and/or caregiving time. Like Lanette I have limitations that make kettlebells not for me. I follow the Strong Women Stay Young program (albeit with heavier weights than discussed there) and if you are interested in checking it out, this free pdf at this link is largely the same program. I recommend the book tho if you like what you see in the pdf. http://growingstronger.nutrition.tufts.edu/
Fat I limit and restrict my fat intake- I need more volume to be satisfied. Now I am far from a low fat diet, but being short and old I don’t get enough calories to ‘waste’ them in high calorie options like butter. Starchy carbs are my personal ‘feel full and satisfied’ foods. Now that is not to knock Keto. I think anyone struggling should give it a try because it is wonderful for so many!
But different things work for different people. I load up on volume - a full 5 cup bag of frozen veggie mix each day, for instance. Any ‘splurge’ calories I save for salty snacks (often the only highly processed food I allow myself) because the sweets and pastries are just not my thing. I try to come up with lower calorie/higher nutrition/satiation taste-alike options. Like a bowl of oatmeal prepared with Almond milk, a teaspoon of peanut butter and 1/2 teasooon jelly instead of a peanut butter and Jelly sandwich. Everyone is different, and I love to hear what works for some of the other ladies so that I can try their tips!

Anyway, we are very busy. We purchased a dented floor model refrigerator for a song and it is being delivered tomorrow. So this morning I unpacked our fridge, took out and cleaned the whole thing. Took off the doors and my husband got an appliance dolly so we could move it into the garage. Now I’m waiting til just before I have to leave for work to take the contents out of the coolers and put them back into the fridge.
And cleaning! How does the back of the fridge area get so disgusting- seems like we just moved it out to clean it recently!
Yes, we will have two refrigerators for two people, a ridiculous luxury. But DH and I rarely eat the same foods, and we have been unable to take advantage of food sales (lack of fridge/freezer space) ever since I started on my get healthy and fit program and have been filling the fridge and freezer up with vegetables and individual portions of home cooked soups. I honestly think this will save us money in the long run. Since I can’t drive, it can be hard to grocery shop and try to stay on a budget. I think this will help, as I can purchase larger quantities of sale items now.
Plus, it has been over 5 years since I had a working ice maker! Now that will be a luxury!!!
Happy wishes to all

Hi Rita,
Thanks for your advice and encouragement. I’m from NJ.
Crazy weather here. Beautiful 70s today yet Saturday had huge snowstorm. Tomorrow back to cold. Took advantage and walked at park track, logging 2 mikes - yay!
Hugs,

Barbara: DH has agreed to try the reheated pasta. Yay! We will see how it goes from here. THANK YOU!!!!
JeanCricket: Welcome back! Your current situation is the reason I continue to log every bite and swallow. If I lose my good habits I'll soon be back where I started. You can do this!
Laura: The kettle bell wasn't for me. Even with instruction I managed to have poor form and balance. Many women here are kettle bell fans and I'm glad it works for them. I stick to yoga as the strength portion of training and use stationary bikes for cardio. There are many right ways of accomplishing the goal of good health. Away from the gym I ride horses. I haven't been to the stable recently due to snow. I think we need to exercise to be strong, and we also need to have fun and move more at the same time. There are lots of ways to get it done. Having fun is one of my stated goals. I reommend it. :flowerforyou:
Today was the dog's day to go to the groomer. They opened a bit late due to icy roads, and he looks better than he has in months. I told her about the back injury and she was careful with him. He's healed, but we will always be a bit protective.

Checking in. It’s been crazy at my house. I had a conference at St Simon’s Island six hours away. Went early for a little relaxation then got called home before the conference even started when my mother lost her brother only 3 weeks after the death of her other brother. I had my surgery for the basal cell today. It went well. The arm is a little sore and I have to baby it for two weeks, not even walking for 3 days. Meanwhile, the bathroom is coming along. Actual tile will be laid tomorrow, so I’m guessing the master will be done by the end of next week. Yesterday was my sister’s last day here (she came home from New Orleans for the funeral),so she and Mama helped me pick out towels and rugs for the floor. DH and I picked paint color today. We still need to get shower fixtures and toilets.
I’ve given up diet soda for Lent. It is not easy, but I’m hoping I won’t even miss it by Easter. I need to step up my game regarding food choices.
Hugs to all who need them. Cheers to those doing well.6 -
Hi Ladies,
Had a lot of running around to do today. I did manage to get a 40 minute walk in, tho.
Terry- Your daughter has the same thing I had last week. Several people have been complaining of the exact same thing. It's a stomach virus of some sort. Hope she feels better, soon.
Janetr- Nice job on the egg. It's such a nice day, today that I have my windows open. Have a great day everybody.
