Monday was one last recovery day. Finally got out running again Tuesday. Did a quick 6 miles with Kody. I felt pretty rough for a mile, particularly my right quad, but in time everything started feeling good and I was able to pick up the pace and even managed a couple of sub 9:00 miles. For you OCD folks, you'll be happy to hear that when I arrived at my driveway with 5.96 on my Garmin, I continued past my house and ended up with 6.00 exactly.
I'm heading out again tonight for 10.
April Progress:
86 out of 150 miles
nice job getting back into it! I'm scheduled for rest until Tuesday, so I'm getting envious of your running again already!

7 x 400 on the treadmill.
15.5/40
I’m not going to hit the April goal, but I’m working on being OK with that. Trying to make up for lost time, running on what should be rest or cross-training days, will only lead to injury. Even now, my sciatica is causing some trouble and I need to be cautious. So maybe that’s my true challenge: To think and act for the long-term.5 -
I may or may not have just lost my mind a little bit and signed up for a 30k trail race in October.14

@noblsheep fantastic! Having lost your mind will definitely be to your advantage during the race.2 -

No, losing your mind would be doing something nuts like scheduling your first Ultra for 6 days after your PR Marathon PR attempt... NOBODY I KNOW would do something that stupid...
Right now a 30k race in October seems pretty sensible to me.6 -

@PastorVincent sorry to hear about your long run, but getting 21 miles before walking sounds pretty good. You'll get it sorted it out before race day, I'm sure. Have ever weighed yourself before and after a long run to get a sense of how much water you loose per hour? It will vary with temperature, to be sure, but if you do that at various temps you can figure out how much water you've lost.
I did last year, it was something like 3+ pounds an hour in the summer. I have lost enough on a run to the point my belt bag is able to slide off when it started snug.
This weekend is to be in the 50's which is much closer to normal for race day than the temps of the last long run. I am just not sure if I should try the tailwind again or abandon it and go back to last years plans of scaps and clifboks + propel.0 -
@7lenny7 @MNLittleFinn @PastorVincent Shoulda known y'all would say that! Thanks for the support and encouragement! Will try to remember it when I'm tired and muddy.
Just looked up last year's route, a third of it was on stone steps. Hmm. Seeing lots of stairs in my future.3 -

I had another great run today. It was a little slower than I had hoped, but overall it was good. I debated about running after work since it was cold this morning (for Texas) and should be really nice this afternoon, but there are things I want to do today (go to the garden center with the giftcard I got for my birthday and get some new plants) so I figured this would probably be one of the last cool runs I would do for a while and I might as well just do it. Sunday is supposed to be cool for my long run, but I will probably just do that after church and it should be really nice by then. The run today was great. I did wish I had thought to wear gloves at the start, but I just pulled my sleeves down and that worked ok.
The next two weeks will be my highest mileage weeks and then I will have 2 weeks of taper before the HM which is one month from today on May 19th. I am really starting to get both excited and nervous about it.
@HonuNui Thanks for the birthday wishes!
@zerlinna87 Prayers for your dad and for you.
@AlphaHowls Good luck on the marathon. I'm looking forward to the race report!
@greyparks206 Good luck on your first 5K! I can't wait to read all about it!
And speaking of race reports. That was one awesome report @MNLittleFinn Truly inspiring.
@elise4270 I'm so glad you were able to get your first post surgery run in. Lots of people would have just quit, but not you!

Quit? After the excitement of Zumbro, and Boston and everyone else running around?
I mean, I was cleared to return to running on the day of the BM. When the American women showed up, I'm an American woman....
The first question the doc said was "what races do you have in mind?" Well, I had to answer right? I can't let him down. All that fine work and people fly in from all over the world to be fixed by him... I gotta run.8 -

Honestly, with the amount of time you have it will be no big deal at all. On one of the FB groups I'm on, a person is signed up for a fall 50k who has only done HM distance so far. With proper training it's not a problem at all.1 -
@RunsOnEspresso @HonuNui @sarahthes I would love to run on a volcano. Hubby might get a business trip to Hawaii and I told him that I'm tagging along if that happens so I can run on a volcano. Of course, he watches too much Hawaii Five-0 and things I'm going to find a bunch of dead bodies, or worse. I told him I would risk it.
@noblsheep A 30k trail race sounds completely reasonable to me (I'm eyeing a 30k in November, so I fully support that craziness). You can come run steps with me at Red Rocks, which is something I'm aiming to incorporate into my weekly training.2 -

I'll be there! (figuratively) Seriously though, steps are supposed to be really useful. How much climbing do you plan on doing?0 -
Quick drive-by report on the Boston Marathon:
The temperature was good. The wind was not a problem. The water in the air caused me (and many others) serious problems. I was undertrained, which couldn't be helped, but I think I managed the race pretty well for my conditioning.
It was a brutal day for volunteers and spectators, not so bad while running, serious risk of hypothermia when you stop running. Along about Heartbreak Hill, I realized if I stopped running I probably wouldn't start again; so I made myself run the whole thing, except for a port-a-pot break at about 12.4 miles.
Didn't get the goodie bag. Post-finish priorities were medal, heat shield, and get back to the hotel for a hot shower.
Understatement!! Fantastic, @MobyCarp , simply fantastic!
@Elise4270 I'm SO happy you've been cleared to run!!!
@polskagirl01 you're doing great, as everyone has said. The taper does magical things and you'll be ready on race day.
@skippygirlsmom that is terrific news about Skip!!! Congrats to her, very well deserved!
happy birthday, @kgirlhart !!

One of the first things I did after I got home from Zumbro is send Kody outside looking for Spring. I think he found it. Upper 40's today, followed by a few days in the 50's, and finally 60's by Monday. I'll be so bold as to predict we're done with snow until fall.

Ok, I'm still trying to catch up on this thread, lol. I'm not sure if I'm gonna be able to do it so I figured I should just get to posting my update.
I finally got the 80/20 Running book. Yesterday was my first day of using the plan. It was supposed to be Tues but stupid work got in the way. I've decided to go through a HM plan, even though I have no HM's scheduled this year, but it almost perfectly gets me to when I need to start my marathon plan so I figured it made sense.
I have to say, running for time goals not distance goals (other than the long runs) is going to take me a while to adjust to. All my known routes, and loops, and distances have suddenly become kinda meaningless since I don't know how much distance most of these runs are going to cover, lol. I foresee a bit of overshooting or undershooting my end point quite a few times in my future I do really like the idea of 80/20 though, and I know a few of you on here have had success with it, so I'm looking forward to trying it out.
If anyone still wants to donate to my Wildlife Conservation Society Run For the Wild 5k fundraiser, it's open until 4/27! I've managed to hit $1,285 so far! https://my.wcs.org/fundraiser/1239710

7.52 km in the hot sun this afternoon! It was a struggle, but I made it. And in my brand new ASICS.
I now have 92.6 km in the books for the month, with just 7.4 left to go! Looks like I will smash that goal and then some!7 -

Despite being sore all over from my weight training on Tuesday I set out yesterday without Hobbes the Vizsla, to run intervals. I was able to get them done but not the way I had intended. I proved to myself that I really need to do them more often and more consistently. I am trying to run M-W-F-Sa with strength training on T-Th so fitting them in on a day where I am not sore will be tough unless I move them to Monday after resting on Sunday. I also need to fit in a tempo run and a long run... I am running out of running days.

Nominal April mileage goal: 130 miles
Real goals: Arrive at Hopkinton healthy. Get to Boyleston Street under my own power. Recover well.
Today's notes – The aches everywhere have faded, leaving a few body parts quietly muttering that all might not be right. The goal for the rest of April is to make that muttering go silent and not turn the threat of injury into reality.
The forecast today called for varying chances of precipitation, and temps peaking in mid afternoon. So when I saw a temperature of 40º F, a dry driveway, and nothing in the air, I decided the recovery run would happen from home instead of coinciding with club practice warmup this evening.
Went out for my 2 miles. Felt really good. The left achilles and vastus lateralis that had muttered a bit were silent. The right tensor fascia lata that had muttered a bit was silent. The right big toe had a rhythmic ache from hitting the shoe, but I know that's just because I'm in the process of losing that toenail after Monday's run in the rain. No big deal. 600 meters into the run, I was thinking an easy 5K.
Then I got to the far end of a loop I run. The wind picked up, and the snow showers started. I'm wearing shorts, a long sleeve tech shirt, and light gloves. But I'm a lot more comfortable than I was Monday in the rain, even early when the rain was light. I pass a guy out walking his dog, and tell him it's a lovely day. He says, "Yeah, right," like he thinks I'm joking. But it was quite pleasant.
Get through that loop, and have some minor muttering from the vastus lateralis and lower right hamstring. It occurs to me that there may be a good reason why recovery runs are stipulated to be 2 miles and not 3 miles. I don't want to find out the hard way that it's a really good reason. So I turn for home the short way, finish a very pleasant run that barely works up a sweat, and go inside to stretch. Yeah, that's the ticket. Give these mildly sore muscles a lot of good stretches this week.
The 2+ mile run was enough. The stretches felt good. I'm delighted to be able to run 2 miles, 3 days after running a well managed marathon, and have nothing hurting badly. Now give those muttering body parts some rest to heal up after getting the blood flowing, and maybe run a little further tomorrow.
Life is good.

@kgirlhart you’re on the same schedule as me. My half is also on May 19th. It’s on Martha’s Vineyard and it’s also my wedding anniversary. Posh post-race meal at fancy restaurant has been booked and instead of jewelry I plan on wearing my finishers medal.7
