Hi Gals,
Janetr -THANK you!!!!
Penny – I always wondered about that Beatles lyric, in N. California we have blackbirds, but they sleep at night, we do have mockingbirds that sing all night, some complain about them, but I love them.
Karen – lovely pictures
Kelly – that’s a big commitment, but the $$ coming in will help with the stress
Barbie – exactly ! thanks!
Katla – you can also buy garlic chive plants if those are allowed. Look the same as regular chive but taste garlicy
Meg – great job, fun to see you and hear your voice!
Heather – the pictures of the enclosed shopping reminded me of a “mall” I saw in Milan, Italy when I was there.
Sue – Great news for Conner, and I am sad to hear about your friend’s DH
Tink – Welcome, try the web page skinnytaste.com
So have been for a few years really applying the quote "The reason most people fail instead of succeed is that they trade what they want the MOST for what they want at the MOMENT." To my finances and hip hip hooray April is the last payment on a loan!!! I’ll be redirecting the money to another commitment, but this was the one with the biggest monthly minimum due, next is the highest interest rate!
And I am going to Boston, my God Daughter is graduating with her BS from MCPHS (mass. College of pharmacy and health sciences) She’ll start back in January on her Masters/Doctorate program in Physical Therapy. I’ll be staying just a few days, in an Airbnb, I can’t afford to stay long being a business owner is not easy on vacation. I have a friend staying with Levi so the home and the dog are safe. I’ll be gone the beginning of May.
Smiles

Getting back into the swing of good health and came to join my Fab and 50+ peeps here!4

Kim - Yeah. The only blackbirds I knew as a girl growing up in Minnesota were the red-winged blackbirds. The thought of anyone listening to them sing didn't evoke anything but puzzlement. (This Wikipedia page has a link to a little sound snippet.)
The European blackbird isn't even related to the New World blackbirds. They don't actually sing "in the dead of night". They wait until "the dawn's early light", which comes at 3 am in Stockholm at this time of year. Here's another Wikipedia page where you can hear how they sound. Song 2 in particular evokes some of the same longing I feel when my blackbird serenades me.
Karen - Your first two photos brought another song to my mind: "Two sleepy people". So wonderful to see young life!
When I saw what words are trending at Merriam-Webster's online dictionary, I had to laugh. I could have cried, but I chose to laugh.
Lest anyone should find that overly political, please note that the sources of the quotes that sparked these lookups can be found on both sides of the political aisle! Ah, whatever became of polite discourse? (Oops! I guess I am crying.)
/Penny, not currently at the5 -
Penny, Kim - love the blackbird sounds, especially no 2. Yes, they sing at the crack of dawn. When I was a teenager one used to perch on the aerial outside my bedroom and sing its heart out at 4 in the morning in summer. :
Recently there was a national vote for our favourite bird. I voted for the blackbird. The robin won, which I also love. Both birds are always in our garden.
Evie - Glad you are getting something worked out. Recently DH was stressing about his nephew's wedding. It's all sorted now but caused sleepless nights.
Sue -
Good wishes for Connor and his surgery.

A couple of thoughts on my trip.
As most of you know, one of 'the girls' is my 'difficult friend'. I did manage to keep my temper OK this time, though it was tried on occasion.
Last night I nearly lost it at the restaurant, but went to the toilets instead.
One of the problems is that she is a very "Yes, but..." person. She moans about a problem, says she wants to be more like me and can I help her. Then I make a sensible suggestion and she thinks of every reason why she can't possibly do it. Grrrrrr!!!!
The most useful strategy I have found through this thread is the 'do it for five minutes' rule. You can learn a language, start exercising, tidy up, write a book, almost anything. Will she hear that? No. Everything has to be a major project and involve lots of thinking and planning and never gets started.
I try not to engage with her about it, but she keeps going on and on even if I say nothing. Oh well. We have all known each other over 55 years. I do love her and feel sorry for her.
Getting on the train this morning back home. The others are leaving later, but I wanted to make my getaway, partly to avoid the rush hour in London.
Much love, Heather UK XXXXXX5 -
Heather, I always think "difficult" people have been put in our life for a reason. Perhaps I am in their life to show them a different way of thinking and doing things, or maybe I need to learn patience and tolerance. Or they might be an example to me of what NOT to be like. My hubby and I are so different, we can constantly provide absolutely different viewpoints on things, LOL. I am a tree-hugging, animal protecting, spontaneous, adventurer while he likes to cut things down, hunt, think things over forever and stay home!
Rebeccah, speaking of the devil (DH) he also had high triglycerides on his last health report which puts him into a high risk category for a heart attack. In order to keep him alive as long as possible, I am encouraging him to eat vegetables, rice and beans, lentils and Angel Cheese, and rice milk instead of meat and dairy. I am hoping to drop both his triglycerides and his cholesterol by making this switch. He will eat what I put in front of him, but he won't use rice milk on his wheetbix. LOL. That's where he draws the line. He is still eating some meat, but the majority of his diet is plant-based now. I am also making him a daily smoothie with berries and flaxseed and turmeric. I am very interested to see his next health report. According to Dr. Michael Gregor's book How Not To Die, if you want to Not Die of a Heart Attack, then eating plants instead of animals is the answer.

I walked 31 km last week, or rather, walked 28.6 km and ran 2.4 km.
So yes, I am exercising ... somewhat ... even if I'm not always logging it on MFP these days.
I’m sorting things out and trying to get my life together again.
My husband is out of sedation and is making small improvements each day. He’s breathing on his own all the time, and swallowing on his own some of the time. He’s also moving all limbs at last, and his head, so he’s not paralysed. But the movements are quite random. It’ll be a long process.
Machka in Oz
Talked to the main Rehab people and my husband is on the waitlist to get into the Rehab Unit. He has to meet certain criteria (like swallowing 24-hours a day) for that first, and then the minute there's room, they'll move him. Maybe ... 3 weeks?
And then that's where he'll live for a long time.
They can't give me any specifics ... every patient is different and these are early days.- He's still pretty calm, although occasionally restless.
- He's talking! They've installed an automatic speech valve onto his trach. So he says, "Yeah" ... whether he really means "Yes" or not. But they are pleased that he's using his voice.
- They had him sort of sitting up in a chair for a little while today ... a special chair that reclines and is designed for someone like him. So he's not bolt upright or anything, but at least it is a bit different from the bed.
Meanwhile, I went back to work for the first time in 4 weeks. One of my coworkers had lunch with me and walked me in to ease my chances of panic/anxiety attacks. Once in, everyone was very sensitive and supportive. I spent the 2 hours talking and they were OK with that.
Today, I also attended a meeting for my university course as a part of the first big assignment. I'm about halfway through that course.
And I've got my eye on a 5K run at the end of May which I might work toward.
Machka in Oz12 - He's still pretty calm, although occasionally restless.

Matchka - Well done for taking that step. Hugs galore.

Heather your reminder of the 5 minute rule. Reminds me of my I will do five things rule. If I am having trouble getting started on the dishes I tell myself you only have to wash five. Just as in the five minute rule once I get started I often do more. Sometimes the hardest part is just getting started.

Happy Friday all! Thank you for the words of encouragement and care! I will remember to take care of myself. IF anything, this will make me more mindful of how I spend my OWN time. I have been inundated with phone calls and messages the past couple of days. I have three interviews set up for weekend care, and one for summer care, so far. I have filled one of the summer spots with a nine year old boy that I had in my childcare when he was infant-age 6. I don't think I will fill all of those spots immediately; but I hope to have my weekend spots full by fall. This weekend I will be working on rewriting my contract to make it relevant to the new hours.
TheTink-I am your girl! Like you, I am on my feet all day 10+ hours a day of chasing kids, walking, lifting, lots of movement and I know exactly how you probably feel at the end of the day. I am 80 pounds overweight, am dealing with plantar fasciitis, and currently an injured knee. I have found, that if I can do just 5 or 10 minutes of extra movement (intentional movement) whether it's walking, marching in place, yoga, stairs, swim. It helps bring my energy levels up and makes a difference. BUT, the biggest difference I have found is in logging and eating the best foods for my body. One hint that I got from the ladies in this thread was to eat a pound of veggies a day. Measure out a pound of veggies and place them in a ziplock with the label for the day you plan to eat them. Then on that day, you can add them to meals, eat them as snacks, raw or cooked, whatever appeals to you. A scale is a great tool to have in your kitchen. I do food prep on the weekends and wash, cut, prep fruits and veg that I will eat during the week. I will sometimes throw some chicken in the crockpot or on the grill to have on hand for easy lunches/dinners. We don't eat out much, which means as the main cook and bottle washer, I get burned out when it comes to finding new/interesting meals to make for my family. See if you can recruit your hubby and mom into finding meals (either online or in cookbooks). It's hard; my DH and DYS (dear husband and dear younger son) love cheesy dishes, or heavy pasta/creamy type of things. Not good for me. But I have learned to compromise. I tend to make meals basic and just change up the spices used. Plate: meat/protein, one or two veggie, rice/pasta/potato (just enough for three small servings). Once in a while I will make meals specifically for them and I will just have a salad. SOUP. I cannot say enough about soup. If you like soup, it is a great filler and if you make your own, you can add your own protein and veg or carb. You can do this, Tink! Come visit often! Chime in when you feel the urge. Log, log, log every bite and you will see changes! lol sorry so long; your words touched me, because I was there when I was starting out. Love to you!
Machka- So glad to see your news on your hubby! He is making great progress and I think once he gets to the point of rehab, the advances he makes will be much more obvious. Glad to hear you have caring coworkers and friends who can walk and sit with you and let you talk. That is a big bonus for you! Sending lots of love!
More of you I wanted to respond to; but I already have one little girl sitting across from me, eating her toast and asking; "Who are you talking to?, Can I see your 'puter?" I better scoot. ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)
p.s. She is lifting my spirits. I woke up kind of cranky. DH was talking to me this morning and kept pronouncing the word "tortilla" like "tortilya". I wanted to pull my hair out! Anyone have one of these at home?4 -
Machka, thanks for the update on your DH. Wow! Your new normal is quite an adjustment. My heart goes out to you and your DH for all that you must endure.
Yesterday was quite interesting around here. It started with a phone call at 7:30 a.m. from my brother who was hysterical saying my mother had to call 911 for my dad. I swear I heard him say he died, but he said no, just on the way to the hospital. My SIL had to take over the phone to tell me where he was. I rushed to the hospital to find him jerking uncontrollably all over from head to toe. This was very scary to watch. My dad is 89, has COPD but otherwise quite healthy and is a two time cancer survivor, After numerous tests, a pretty useless ER, and a trip to his doctor and his dentist, it was determined that the uncontrollable jerking was caused by either fever or pain from an abscessed tooth. It had pretty much stopped by the time we left the OR at 11:00, but an occasional jerk would still appear and his hands were pretty shaky. We got him home at last by 6:00 with a new antibiotic (he was already on one) and a somewhat stronger pain pill than the Tylenol he had been taking. He has an appointment on Tuesday with an oral surgeon to extract the tooth. So, as it turned out, a lot of drama over a tooth, but much better than the alternative of stroke or even worse.
I had just started a new 24-day weight loss challenge with a regime of supplements to be taken at regular intervals throughout the day. Needless to say none of them got taken yesterday before breakfast. Since I didn’t get to eat breakfast anyway, I did the breakfast stuff at 11:30 and noon, ate breakfast for lunch, and continued about the day. I did good with no stress eating and getting my night time supplements on time, but there was no time for exercise. I’m back to normal today, but I’m going to have to skip the gym in favor of cutting grass and cleaning house.
In good news, Ari Jo came home from the hospital and all is well in their little family. I’ll try to snag a pic for y’all, since I know you love your baby fixes.8 -
Sue - so glad Connor's doing well. My favorite niece, and the last of her generation in the family, as she's my little sister's last daughter, was born after only 25 weeks in the womb, and at 20 years old, still deals with certain things that are the fall-out of being born so early. Not sure any of us ever stop worrying about her.
Machka - Glad to hear your husband's making progress... the new "normal" you're living through is my nightmare, and I think of you, and him, every day.
Kim - enjoy your trip to Boston, and well done on finishing off the loan! After this, the snowball just gets bigger, and each debt will go down more easily. Corey and I did something similar to pull us out of over $100,000 in debt when we were first married, the vast majority from his ex-wife's habit of applying for a new credit card, maxing it, and never paying it. He and I sat down with his bills months before we married, so I went in eyes wide open, but it was a long road out of debt. Nonetheless, we made it, and it's an amazing place to be.
Doing the happy dance of joy over here... Broke that 20-pounds-lost mark this morning, down to 197, and watching the 200-pound numbers in my rearview mirror. With an eagle eye, by the way - the sneaky buggers WILL jump right back on if I'm not vigilant. Much of the continuing loss is due to my beloved. When I say, "I want something," late in the evening, he just says "No." He's the cook in the house, and totally invested in my weight loss, which is amazingly helpful. Somehow, he does it without ticking me off, which is vaguely miraculous, as well. He knows the weight loss will help the pain in my knees... so I know he's saying "no" because he loves me.
Unfortunately, he's gained weight over the same period of time, as he was the primary chief cook and childcare provider while we were with the grandkids, and got little exercise. He's looking forward to going back to work--and I'm looking forward to that happening!
Off to the races...
Love y'all!

Sue in TX: Good wishes for your grandson. I hope it all works out well for him. Sorry to hear about the death of your friend's husband.
Lanette: I think the painters are getting closer to finishing the detail work on our place. There are several additional buildings to go. I think they'll be around for quite a while longer. Luckily, they're nice people.
Rebecca: Sending many good thoughts your way.
Rita: I hope you're feeling better soon. :flowerforyou:
Heather: I love the photo of you at Kirkgate Market. The roof support structure is amazing!
Kim: I saw the garlic chives and left them at the store. I should ask DH if he'd like to have some growing here. Thank you for the good idea. Enjoy your trip to see your God-Daughter's graduation! :flowerforyou:
Machka: It sounds as though your DH is starting to make a progress. Yay!!! I am so glad that your coworkers are being sensitive and supportive. :flowerforyou:
I'm up in the early hours of the morning, have made a pot of coffee but haven't had any so far, and I think I'll try to get back to sleep for a bit.

Happy Friday Ladies!
I am so looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow morning. The clock is set to go off at 4:30 on workdays but tomorrow I will get to sleep until 7:30!!!!! I have a beauty salon appointment at 8:30. I cut my dreadlocks off back in January and I’ve been in a hair style fight ever since. I even had a Mohawk for a couple of weeks. I also decided not to dye my hair anymore so now it’s pretty white at the roots. DH is not particularly happy about the no more dye decision but I feel freedom from the dye your hair ritual. DH thinks that gray hair makes you look old. What the heck! We had this intense conversation at least once every 2 days. This is the “cougar” mental picture I painted for him…..Me in Onederland, driving his 650i convertible BMW with the top down, silver hair in a snappy short style, golden hoop earrings, skinny leg jeans, high heels, meeting my girlfriends for lunch. Then I told him I thought that the hair dye might be the cause of his hair thinning out on top. I haven’t heard a word since.
Anyway, I am pleased with my food intake and exercising this week. I am especially happy with my water intake everyday. Sometimes drinking water is a challenge for me as I’d rather have anything else. Another thing is that I am back on steroids which usually cause me to pack on 7-10 pounds. My working out at the gym has become wonderful. I am working up a great sweat and feel an increased energy level. I’ve also been sleeping better probably because I’m exhausted. I can hardly wait for weigh-in Sunday morning.
Thanks to each of you that welcomed me back.
Lisa – You are in my thoughts often, always with a smile and encouraging me to be adventurous.
Heather – I bought the Kindle version of your book and started reading yesterday. Your memories brought back so many of my own memories that it’s been intense reading thus far. I already know that I am going to keep this book in my heart.
Pip – I always love seeing the pups. I wondered how long they let Kirby hold those treats up in front of them without jumping him.
So those are my thoughts for the day! Have a great day and weekend everyone.

Good morning from cold NJ. Is there room for one more 50+ here? I've done MFP off and on for many years...reached my goal weight at Weight Watchers a few weeks ago, but for me calorie counting is a bit more effective at this weight. Still going to WW and will be at Lifetime, but calorie counter (along with beans) at heart.
ps. I would only be here for four more years, having reached the fabulous age of 56!4 -
Good morning Ladies -
Machka - Hugs! Prayers continue for your peace of mind and for continued healing for your hub. Like the others have mentioned, I can't even imagine what you are dealing with and going through. I was just wondering this morning how you were doing with the panic attacks when I saw your post. I am glad you were able to return to your workplace but so very sorry that you are having to find a new normal that is so very different.
As suspected, my weight gain was water from flying, eating more sodium, etc. With this mornings weigh in I am actually .8 below the bottom of my threshold. While that doesn't overly worry me, it does give me a little pause. I am at the very lower end of a healthy BMI (not that BMI is the end all, but my Dr's office does still use it along with waist measurements). It would only take me dropping 4 more lbs to fall into the underweight category. The hubs is not going to make it home again this weekend so I won't be eating out again this weekend. I tend to hermit when he is gone and I'm sure I will this weekend as well. Yesterday I "did the lawn". Four hours on the riding mower and blowing off all the hard surfaces. I need to get out there and hose down/scrub all the outdoor furniture but I don't think the nasty yellow pollen is done yet. I will wait on that or I will just have to do it again in a couple/few weeks.
Rebecca - Hang in there on the cholesterol and triglycerides. Exercising and eating "right" most of the time may help. As Barbie said, if it is hereditary, they aren't going to go down much regardless of what you do. Keep doing what you are doing and focus on overall health. You've got this!
Heather - Glad you had a good time and your difficult friend wasn't too difficult. Safe travels.
Tink - I don't have a lot of recipe ideas for you, but I also did 1200ish calories for most of my weight loss. I am not terribly hungry in the mornings so my breakfast tends to be only yogurt (which I am eating now). My lunch during the week is almost always a huge green salad with turkey and red wine vinegar as my dressing. I have another serving of yogurt (toasted marshmallow while they have it and then caramel or vanilla with Jif peanut powder mixed in when the limited run of marshmallow goes away) and use it as a dip with apple slices for desert. Dinner is a 4 oz (usually) portion of protein (chicken breast, shrimp, pork, extra lean beef) and a bunch of veggies. I eat a daily banana to keep leg cramps away and often a fiber one bar of some kind because I love them. I also eat a 100 calorie portion of popcorn almost every evening as a snack. My hub eats whatever I cook for dinner, he just gets a bigger portion of protein than I do and often less veggies. I will also add cheese to a lot of his meals that I don't put cheese on. I will often make a frittata one night each week with one egg and the rest egg whites and tons of veggies, some feta cheese and whatever leftover meat I have from the week. This is normally Thursday nights dinner. We have zoodles (zucchini noodles) often also with marinara, veggies and whatever protein I throw in there. Another staple is fried "rice" made with cauliflower rice. Again, egg whites and whatever veg and protein I have. This is another one that I use up leftover protein in. We eat a lot of wilted spinach because we both love it. It also goes in the frittata and the pasta when I make them. I almost always have grilled chicken breast, smoked chicken breast, grilled shrimp, smoked shrimp and grilled sausage portioned and frozen ready to go. I grab a bag of protein and thaw it during the day to make dinner that night. Sorry to be so long winded.
I better get off my butt and get my miles in. Sitting in the recliner with my feet up is not closing my rings on my watch!
Okie in the TX Hill Country who is off to a VERY lazy start to the day4 -
It's Friday!
Machka - you are in my thoughts constantly. Throughout my life, I have wondered why bad things happen to good people (I read the book decades ago) and wondered about that worn out platitude "Everything happens for a reason."
When I was in the middle of dealing with my own DH's recoveries from illnesses and his fall from the roof and the labyrinth dealing with the ER & medical profession in general, I truly wondered what good would become of this, if anything. Well, I'm still not sure, other than if I ever have to be with him in the ER again and he needs extended care, they'll dance to my tune. I no longer am shy about speaking up and demanding the best quality care and aftercare.
Guess that's one of the main reasons I volunteered to be on the Area Agency on Aging Advisory Board. I'll have fast and direct access to the experts and support groups. OK, so maybe that is something good.... I love to share information like this with my community.
My new housecleaner has inspired me to attack the spots and stains on the carpets throughout the house. The great spot remover I found which handles coffee stains well on the living room rug doesn't do diddly for some of the stains cause by my DH spilling ??? wine maybe? Who knows? on the cream colored rug in the office (former third bedroom). So yesterday, I resorted to spraying pure hydrogen peroxide onto the stain (hey, I couldn't make it any worse!) and by golly, I think it's working.
The next challenge is buying a new vacuum. I am overwhelmed at the choices and after reading the Amazon reviews - good and bad - on the appealing ones, I need to shut down the computer and just leave it for a while. Won't have time today, but plan to hit the vacuum cleaner store next week and actually see some of these. Also have to take into consideration someone other than us will be using it a lot - and Collette the new housecleaner likely weighs 105 lbs soaking wet. She may well be mighty mouse tho.
Gotta get ready to hit the road-

Welcome Tink! I've been a member since 2008 and while I've only lost 14 lbs in 10 YEARS, I don't consider myself unsuccessful as I'm eating healthier than I ever did before. While my activity level has decreased with retirement, age and recent plantars fasciitis, these gals inspire me to train with weights (Strong Women Stay Young) tho' I'm not quite ready for kettlebells. Speaking of PF, what's helped me is: BEFORE getting out of bed EVERY day, 10 times each: rotate feet in circles clockwise then counter; point left while flexing right, then reverse; and describe alphabet with big toe. Somedays print, some days cursive THEN when arising place food S L O O O W L Y on floor. After walking around a bit, stand on edge of bathroom scale on balls of feet and gently stretch first left, then right leg by lowering heel. repeat 5 times with semi straight leg, then again with flexed knees. While reading this thread, roll frozen water bottle with sole of foot. Finally threw away my flat slippers and only wear slippers/yoga sandals with support around the house. NEVER walk around barefoot or in socks only. Oh and compression socks seem to help too! If it gets bad, I have gel supports (thanks Heather) but so far haven't needed them.
It is important for caregivers to schedule self care time. Wisdom and compassion abound here, when all else fails, there is always pip's boot
Evelyn sounds like a brilliant solution. Trust your son will understand and accept.
Rebecca you are ROCKING that gym! Think the body makes cholesterol regardless of how much your food contains. Believe your exercise will help bring cholesterol down, I get my Vit D from lemon flavored Norwegian Cod Liver oil (preferring food sources), know you are limiting carbs so triglycerides will come down too. Truly sounds more like cha-cha forward. Is your middle son's wife's name Delilah?
Lanette "nice older couple 40's 50's" gosh! they sound YOUNGER to me Lanette Thought the United Bretheren were a little more plain and simple in their attire. Easter Hats? Exciting!
Kim con VERY gratulations on paying off that loan!
Penny thanks so much for the blackbird sounds. Count me among the mystified.
Wendy "'difficult' people ...in our life for a reason" you are so right. "example... of what NOT to be like" resonated especially strongly... the beam in mine own eye... ;}
Machka Making "Yeah" sounds? Oh that DOES sound hopeful! Sometimes I wonder whatever is in the mind of God or if Got gets nightmares too. You and your husband both continue in my daily intentions.
Kay how scary, who knew an abscessed tooth could cause shaking all over. Wish oral surgeon could get it out sooner, you just know it is poisoning your Dad. Well done on the food choices and supplements amidst all the stress.
Lisa you are one admirable lady, to take on the ex's debt with your new husband and to so honorably discharge it. Brava!
Tere in RVA "...cause of his hair thinning on top" You made me snort my tea! Sauce for the goose...
