So I have been camping all weekend. That is a huge trigger for me. There is a big group of us and I knew people would be drinking. I was worried about how I would handle it. I voiced my concerns to my husband so when I was offered that first drink we glanced at each other and I felt the support. Said no thanks and after that I had no problem. Food calories are another story. I was mindful, didn’t go crazy. But after I got home and entered all my food into MFP I consumed more than I thought. The meals were all group meals so I had little control over WHAT was served but I controlled portions and that’s all I can do. So, even though the calories were a little high the one day, I did not drink and now have 16 days AF. I consider that a success.14

I'm just wrapping up my weekend away. I stumbled upon a wise soul on youtube who has been around for years. He used to be on Oprah long ago. Gary Zukav. He wrote a famous book about the soul. Well, as life has it, one of the first videos I watched was about addiction. He says addiction has diminishing returns when it comes to masking your deep pain. First, you drink one or two, then you drink a bottle and eventually you drink every day all day, but it does not dull or get rid of the deep pain you harbor. You discover to your horror the pain is still there. That's the nature of any addiction. It's a frightened part of your personality that is very strong.
So, it's up to us to discover the pain that the addiction is trying got mask. What is the deepest reason? Is it the pain of being inadequate to be in this world? Is it the pain of wanting to belong but not belonging? The pain of needing to be loved. Or the pain of being defective.
Sorry - if this is too much info. But I learn so much from self help videos. And I really enjoy learning and growing as a person.
Sending you all love. Tomorrow is a new week. And I"ll go back to being AF. It just feels so much better. Xo6 -
@Alzzi76 I think if you need a break, then take a break; you don't need to deactivate from MFP.
But I really feel that we need you and your cheerful spirit.
And perhaps, you need us too. Let's continue on this journey together.3 -
Day 10 AF for me. Last night I got a bad bout of allergies ended up in bed shortly after 8 after medicating. Woke up and allergies feel better but I feel like I am coming down with something. I finally made myself walk the dog and go to the grocery store. I hope I am not getting sick....hope to work out later today. Last time I went AF for 30 days I got sick in the middle of it. You would think not drinking would keep me healthy.8

JulieAL1969, have you read Gabor Mate's book, "In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts"? I think that you would really appreciate so much of what he has to say. xo!2

You already did!
I personally find that reading this thread regularly is best to stay on track. And posting wins and losses helps. You found a great group of supportive people3 -
Oh! Lol Thanks! I'll take a look!2

Thank You!! I see!1 -
Win for the weekend: I changed my goal for May to allow drinking two night on the weekend but I only drank Saturday. I had no urge to have even one drink Friday!
Loss: now that I have been moderating to only one day a week of drinking for over four months - hangovers are tremendously worse than ever in my life. I cant even fathom how I was ever able to drink on back to back days. I may be changing my goal back to once a week just out of necessity.6 -
@wigi41 Thanks! I will check the book out! Xo0

But I've got through that.. it'll b a test this avo or tonight.. but im going to keep u all posted.. coz i do want to make this plan happen.. i have to remember to drink more water. That's another of my struggles
Thanks all for supporting4 -
I’m going to try to keep it to one night a week. Currently I drink Friday night, Saturday night, and sometimes part of Sunday.
I think my overall energy during the week will benefit from cutting down to only one night5 -

Want to commit to dry MayMy goal for May is I will not drink alone, social occasions onlyI am just starting and I am planning on a dry March also.SanDiegofitmom wrote: »Back in for May. The slippery slope definitely was in effect for me in April. This month I’m committing to really working on not drinking anything except for an occasional date night. Thanks to this thread for keeping me honest!Still in! Goal is AF M-Th and the equivalent of 1 bottle of wine (total) F-Sun. I went 1 drink over last week on my AF goal and 1 drink over on my weekend goal. (the weather has just been so darn beautiful!)
One thing that I noticed was that I really thought about it before I did it. I asked myself, "Do I really want a glass of wine?" "Are you sure you want a 2nd (or 3rd) glass?" Most of the time my answer was, "Nope. I'm good." A few times it was, "yes", BUT no more mindless pouring. Looking forward to a week of good sleep and clear thoughts. Happy Monday and warm energy sent out to all!
Just a little query.. why all the woo's.. is it suposed to b a happy thing..
We all would want everyone to feel free and comfortable and free on this thread.. i do anyway ..

Because this is the only website or place in the entire world where "woo" is negative and people don't know that it's negative here? That's my guess anyway6 -

Well that wasnt long.. my daughter had been away for afew weeks and walked in after work with a bottle off rosè.. reminding me, she gave it to me ages ago and havent opened it. It was from a popular winery in Western Australia. She said since she was home now wanted to share it .. i said nah.. not yet and she accepted whoohoo i did it!!
Then abt an hour so later...an unforeseen situation arose out of my control. I would in the past pour myself a strong one (whiskey on ice or vodka and lemon nice and strong or id have more than one.) This goes without blinking an eye lid here, being an alcoholics domain.... But.... smiling inside i thought id go for a drive. I had to the laundryomat so i did..*flex* i felt victory... again ! Phew!!..
Hey guys, thanku i have some where to let it go and win!
I hope this isn't too bitsy to read .. and i hope everyone wins like this. Its cool.. my life might get back yet!!
Thanks for reading... lol11 -
@Alzzi76 you did really great! Especially with the daughter situation, it was one of those things you could have made yourself reason out since it was a gift. Well done!
I had a dry weekend. Yesterday was my only temptation because we had a bbq with my daughter-in-law to be and all that new family. Absolutely nothing in common with these people except the grand baby and they were all drinking. It would have been so easy grab a drink and lighten the awkwardness, but instead I drank my water and tried not to roll my eyes the whole time ;-) le sigh
Here's to a great week for us all...stay strong, friends!!7 -

Thats so awesome. I could imagine it as i was reading it. Its so tricky. The whole time i have to kelp talking myself through it. When im good i sip on lemon and soda water..
The feeling after is amazing. When everyone is ready to go to sleep im ready for a run such a contrast.
Im so happy for your victory too2 -

Just wow. Makes you realize there's no end to the escalation. Thanks for this, @JulieAL1969. Always appreciate what you pass along. You've worked that AF muscle a bunch and I know it's going to be like riding a bike for you when you get home. I've had to prove to myself over and over again since January that it just ain't worth it. Oh, I think having one glass of wine is great, but it's the drinking to the point of being hung over that isn't worth it at all.
And speaking of one glass of wine, that was my total consumption this weekend. One. Out with my husband for happy hour. Said no to #2 and had a glass of water. Had a sip of a bottle of red I'd had open at home since Christmas just to see if it was still good. Nope. Threw it out. The old me would've been appalled at wasting it.

OMG, yes, exactly. I drank every. single. day. I know I've forgotten how bad I felt and I take for granted how great I feel now. And that level of drinking screws up SO many other areas of your life: exercise, weight, finances, performance at work, relationships. I could go on and on, but not telling anyone here anything they don't already know.

Pretty successful moderation weekend here - drank a bottle of wine total at home between Friday-Sunday, plus an extra beer both Saturday and Sunday at social events.
I did have that feeling Friday night though, that I wasn’t sure I really wanted a drink but felt like I should because it was my plan to drink moderately on weekends. I had a glass of wine while eating a late dinner, but wasn’t tempted to keep going, it didn’t honestly taste that good (didn’t prevent me from finishing the bottle Sat and Sunday though!). I think it was @kittybenn who said she felt like she was drinking on the weekend just because that’s when she had planned to drink, not because she really wanted it or for any special reason. I need to think about it a little more and maybe consider what constitutes an “event” that I would want to drink at and not just drink because it’s the weekend.
Back to AF this week!

I had a glass of wine yesterday on what was supposed to be Day 14 AF. We were at Book of Mormon. That’s my only excuse. Wine was good BUT. I was miserable last night wanting more. Seriously? When will I convince myself that moderation doesn’t work for me? I’m off to a job interview in 30 minutes. Thankful I didn’t indulge past that one glass. Day 1 today.
PS. “Woo” is bad? I never knew what it was.5 -
I am day 11 AF. I have been dealing with boredom. TV seems boring without drinking and honestly, I do not know what to do with myself. This week my kids will be with their dad so I will have plenty of time to get bored. Trying to come up with things to do so I do not get too bored. Alcohol Experiment talked about willpower and boredom. I am doing okay on the willpower just bored. I am avoiding going out with friends as that always seems to involve alcohol. Will try working out post work.7

Good luck at the interview!
Yes most people use Woo to mean “that’s a load of hooey” it’s commonly used when people are spouting pseudoscience . When MFP first added it they told people it could be used positively “woo hoo!” Or negatively “that Woo out has no place here”. Because of all the confusion they’ve since come back and clarified that it is best meant as a negative reaction, like on the countless ACV threads where someone says that they read on Instagram that drinking ACV will help get rid of stubborn belly fat... that’s a WOO in an eye rolling way. But a lot of people are still confused and then you have people who think Woo is always negative getting woo’d by people who mean it positively. It’s a mess.4
