I find the state of ketosis has definitely kept me feeling full. The biggest supplement was MCT oil. That changed the game for me. I typically take 2-4 tablespoons daily. 2 per sitting. When I need more fat I take it. It has no taste and is great for maintaining Ketosis
pretty sure that keeping carbs low is what maintains ketosis.3 -
Calories in vs calories out is a great way to look at it, except that’s not the case for every body. Metabolism, age, and stress (plus other health conditions) play a role. So putting every person in the same box isn’t helpful or fair. Over the last year after a big hormonal shift following a knee surgery, I tried all my old weight loss tricks. Everything in moderation, but reduced calories. Whole 30. Auto-immune protocol (I have thyroid disease), and paleo. None of that worked though I was supposedly consuming less than I was burning. And yes, I tracked every calories. Nothing helped.
I’ve been doing keto now for two months and am down about 18 pounds. That’s more than a pant size, not just water weight.
To the original poster: the other comments about avoiding that flu (which by the way, can happen whenever you remove processed sugar, fats and salt from your diet) by using real salt and potassium and tons of water are helpful. I managed to avoid it that way, was lucky to get the same advice.
Also, went on vacation and found I didn’t need to go off keto and crap my pants like another poster said. Knowing I’d feel awful by adding back the processed grains and sugar was great motivation to stay away.
I have to say though, I’m new to it. I love it. Super satisfied, satiated. But the idea of just going on and off like that makes me wary personally since you’re causing your body to switch fuel sources altogether.
And, adding that I used to bash the heck out of keto. I’m eating my words now and hope I never ever sounded as condescending as some of these people do.
Also adding that every body is different and what is sustainable for one person may not be for someone else. Why make other people feel bad or whatever just because of something you personally don’t think you can do? Armchair nutritionist.. that’s a great phrase!!

Actually, yes, it is the case for everybody. As long as you are eating less calories than you burn in a day, you will lose weight. That your CO portion of the equation might be a little different than someone else's does not negate the equation as a whole.10 -
I follow the Ketogenic Lifestyle because I have high A1C and am insulin resistant. I will add that I absolutely love it. I am fortunate in that I am pretty easy to please when it comes to foods and I love the seven or eight foods that I do eat. Cutting out carbs is not a problem for me. Do I miss some of the meals? Hell yes! But, if I want to be healthy then I need to keep on missing them! LOL!
Keto can be very difficult for some | most to follow consistently. I mean, let's be honest - cutting out carbs (effectively) can be tough. Deal breaker for a lot of people. Which is really too bad!
I totally bypassed the Keto Flu because I educated myself before jumping on this and increased sodium intake, essentially, nd kept well hydrated. I have been drinking about eight glasses of water a day for awhile, so that was no challenge, or change!
It comes down to Calories In vs. Calories Out. No matter what the "diet" is called. If you consume more calories than you burn then you are going to gain weight. Plain and simple (generally speaking....speaking about the masses here....not including those with medical conditions and autoimmune diseases and the like).
And, I also follow Intermittent Fasting (16:8, but I worked up to that) and I do BulletProof Coffee (Coffee with Kerry Gold Butter and Brain Octane Fuel). I LOVE IT! But, that is me. Everyone is different. And, keep in mind that I went down this path BECAUSE of high A1C and Insulin Resistance.
Keto is not some magic pill. It will work for some while it will likely be far too restrictive for most. Ketosis is a great thing (for me). It really sucks, though, if you are doing something like Powerlifting. I struggled while I was doing that. Big time. Training sucked *kitten*! Injury resolved that struggle! :-)
And, there do seem to be - on both sides of the aisle - folks with an agenda who promote | bash Keto. To each their own. I try not to judge.
So, is Ketogenic Lifestyle worth it? To me, decidedly and unabashedly (is that a word?) yes! But, probably not for most.3 -

MFP and other calculators say my BMR is 1400-1600. its not its 1272.what I should be maintaining on according to those calculators are also 200-300 calories off. so I have to adjust my intake. for me I have to burn more calories as well which is the only thing that works for me. I also have RA which is considered an autoimmune disease.

I was referring to the overly processed sugar, fats and salts you find in the SAD. Not fat in general.5

most that do keto here of course are the high fat low carb people. but still to get into ketosis you need very low carbs. I think I mentioned that above. if a person does low carb,low fat and high protein then how do they enter ketosis with very little fat as their fuel source? I know protein can be converted into glucose if needed but wouldnt that defeat the purpose of ketosis? your body would then run on glucose instead of fat to produce ketones right?
I know there are different types of keto but with most of them they all have higher fat limits. just one has the protein @25-30% of their calorie intake,the rest are all lower protein(I posted links in another thread awhile back). most of the diets had at least 60-90% fat intake. to me thats high fat.I do a low fat diet because I have to. I cant imagine cutting my carbs really low and upping my protein, egads I couldnt do it.0 -

Ketosis isnt driven by fat, its driven by an energy source change from restricted carbs. Fat just makes for an easy and efficient fuel source while protein isnt a good fuel source.4 -

Exactly. Lots of interesting ideas out there about Ketogenic Lifestyle and Ketones and Glucose and Glycogen. I am learning myself (aka, edumacating myself) as to all of the technical parts to the two. That change from glucose to ketones is interesting. Still not educated enough to have intelligent conversation about this, but do enjoy reading the different posts. Again, very interesting "thoughts" on this topic.1 -

It is indeed a good choice - for some!
I follow the Ketogenic Lifestyle due to high A1C and insulin resistance.
I know a couple of people who have different autoimmune diseases and they GREATLY benefit from the Ketogenic Lifestyle.
But, it (Keto) is super restrictive. And the Keto Flu (which, admittedly one experiences due to ignorance) can absolutely destroy any desire to follow this way of eating. Which is really too bad. A little ownership and personal accountability make the Keto Flu a non-issue.
I can preach the benefits of the Ketogenic Lifestyle, but I would be doing anyone and everyone a dis-service were I to not include both benefits and challenges so that people can make a more educated decision. It is really challenging (not for me, but I am 'off') to restrict Carbs to under 50g a day.

I follow the Ketogenic Lifestyle due to high A1C and insulin resistance.
I know a couple of people who have different autoimmune diseases and they GREATLY benefit from the Ketogenic Lifestyle.
But, it (Keto) is super restrictive. And the Keto Flu (which, admittedly one experiences due to ignorance) can absolutely destroy any desire to follow this way of eating. Which is really too bad. A little ownership and personal accountability make the Keto Flu a non-issue.
I can preach the benefits of the Ketogenic Lifestyle, but I would be doing anyone and everyone a dis-service were I to not include both benefits and challenges so that people can make a more educated decision. It is really challenging (not for me, but I am 'off') to restrict Carbs to under 50g a day.
Anyway, I love technical conversation. Working on it!
I curse whoever named the electrolyte imbalance "keto flu". It makes it sound like something that will be / must be experienced if one does keto, and not something that is entirely preventable with a bit of knowledge.
I've had people argue with me about it. They insist it is the keto flu - a carb detox - and not an electrolyte imbalance, so they don't increase sodium, then they suffer a while longer, and then they quit while attributing their symptoms to ketosis rather than low sodium.
I think most bad ketogenic experiences are due to not increasing sodium enough. Not all, but most.

and just so you know I did keto for 2 months and for me I lost 5 lbs of water weight and that was all I lost. my weight loss was the same doing keto as it was eating the way I do now. also when you decrease your activity you need less calories as well so that could be why you werent losing back then. Thyroid issues can make losing weight harder too because it regulates metabolism.so if your levels arent on point weight loss can be hard. my daughter is having that issue at this very moment.

most that do keto here of course are the high fat low carb people. but still to get into ketosis you need very low carbs. I think I mentioned that above. if a person does low carb,low fat and high protein then how do they enter ketosis with very little fat as their fuel source? I know protein can be converted into glucose if needed but wouldnt that defeat the purpose of ketosis? your body would then run on glucose instead of fat to produce ketones right?
I know there are different types of keto but with most of them they all have higher fat limits. just one has the protein @25-30% of their calorie intake,the rest are all lower protein(I posted links in another thread awhile back). most of the diets had at least 60-90% fat intake. to me thats high fat.I do a low fat diet because I have to. Ketosis isnt driven by fat, its driven by an energy source change from restricted carbs. Fat just makes for an easy and efficient fuel source while protein isnt a good fuel source.

Lol, you wooers can woo away all you want. Still doesn't change the fact that a meta-analysis of 32 studies controlled for calories and protein intake showed no metabolic advantage to a ketogenic diet. Those woo must be the cheering kind!

There's always body fat, and protein can be used for some energy, it just is not a good primary source.
Consider starvation. If someone is only eating 400 kcal a day of only carbs, they would still end up in ketosis due to a lack of energy although they are eating 100g of carbs which is higher than a normal ketogenic diet. A lack of carbs or calories will cause ketosis.
Medium chain triglycerides are also converted to ketones very readily. People can raise their ketones, even if they eat more than low carb, by eating MCTs. That's one area where eating more of a fat can raise ketones. More fat is just not a requirement to making ketones. KWIM?2 -

I can see the case with starvation though but then in that case you body will be using fat,muscle and lean mass for energy though. I know a lack of carbs cause ketosis thats not what Im saying thought. I just dont know how a low far ,low car ketosis diet would in a way be healthy due to the body needing some fat for hormone production or does the ketones help with that? I know that when you fast your body will also turn carbs and other things into fatty acids to run on,sort of like a ketosis. so that sorta makes sense in starvation.as for body fat though what happens when a person doesnt have enough body fat? then what? are there any legit studies on this that I can look up? Ive looked up some but its doesnt answer the questions I have.0 -
Thinking about trying the keto diet. I am trying to cut just a few pounds for a summer trip that I am taking with a couple of my friends. I have heard that keto is super easy to do after the initial two days. Please advise on how long it took for you to lose X number of pounds and to see the results or how long it took to get over the "keto flu" or tips on how to manage or good food to eat. Just any tips. Wanting to start soon!

For whatever reason there are people on here who constantly go out of their way to bash the keto diet. I don’t go on other forms talking trash on how people lose weight but to each his own. I personally love the ketogenic diet and unlike some of the responses, there is science that backs fat loss while in ketosis. There is no other form of eating that gets you into this state. That is what separates it from all others. Everyone will have different results and find it to be “easy or hard” depending on the individual. I was at a lull for about 2 straight months at 211lbs while counting calories on MFP. I reintroduce keto back into my diet and am now at 204 in a month and a half. Unlike other diets, there are no cheat days. Cheat days kick you out of ketosis and you have to work your way back to it. For me personally I find it hard at times to stay away from certain carbs but I balance it out by eating foods that are preferred like avocados, ribeye steaks, eggs, salami etc. I find having friends on here who also keto with open diaries a good way to find new recipes and items to eat.
