Setting a goal of 150km for July. I am building up to a half on August 25th so need to build my k’s up and do more speed work.
1 July: 5.3km, 5.09 pace (about race pace)

Ack! It is July! When did that happen! With the forecast being so evil, I am not sure what I will pull off for July - esply given I hope to be closing and moving into my new-to-me house!
So maybe 150miles? Might not be till fall before I get back to my regular distance.

Going to aim for 45 miles in July, going to start at a mile per day the first two weeks to get back into running and then 2 miles per day the second two weeks, depending how I am feeling hopefully more.6

I got a grand total of 3.5 hours of sleep last night. Also I'm pretty sure my Forerunner 735 is dead and needs a warranty replacement, which I will arrange on Tuesday or Wednesday so I have my new one in time for my end of July race. In the meantime back to training with Strava on my phone.4

In for 50k/31 miles for July. The plan is to add back some longer runs on trails, focusing on keeping my knee from being aggravated. It's been long enough that the doctor may agree to drain the cyst again, which will help. Still don't think it's ready for speed work. My real goal is to keep running despite the heat, even if forced to use the treadmill.
July 1 and 2 are scheduled rest days for me. There's a 5k on the 3rd which I'm considering but it's in late afternoon so unless there's a break in the heat it's not happening. The forecast is expected to be 96 with a feels like over 100 and dewpoint of 77. And just to add insult to injury, a lightning storm at the same time.

Count me in for 125 miles. My old Peroneal Tendonitis issue has been flaring up the past two weeks. I might have to back off a little this month if it doesn’t calm down.4 -

Re the started running question
- started C25K in late 2016 and finished graduate program of 10K in early 2017 (all on a treadmill) as I wasn’t gong to venture out in the cold winter running etc
- started running outside in spring of 2017 and by early May, bought a used garmin to track runs vs apps on phone
- found strava and that led me to find running groups (both virtual with MFP and local) where I eventually decided to give the local one a chance since it was free and could tell from their Facebook page that it was fun. Motto on running is “If you ain’t having fun, you’re doing something wrong”.
- By end of 2017 I had run 2-10K’s, a 12 and 15k and 2 half marathons with plan to start marathon training for a 2018 spring marathon which was a year to the date I started tracking via my garmin
- looking to run a fall marathon and have starting training But holy cow- the heat is something else. Last year, shorter distances in HM training likely help me avoid much of the heat and/or it was cooler and/or I just didn’t know any better since I now realize how much I enjoy a 50 degree morning.
- I do look to get better but I am also realizing that there are so many factors I can’t control to insure a PR . i.e. my first HM was techinically a training run for my real 15k target race later in the year and I ran it in such a free/fun way that while I wanted to do well, I had no expectations other than to run comfortably hard and try to close in on that last 5k. That training race remained my best time until my 5th HM...times were relatively close so my fitness was likely the same or perhaps even better conditioned but you can’t control course, weather, body, etc.
- now I run as I enjoy it, I have fun, it helps me stay fit and if I opt to run a race I can look to do the best I can and if PR the beer at the end will taste even cooler!5 -
I couldn't get out of bed for my scheduled 9 miles this morning. This is two Sundays in a row where my sleep was awful, like more than usual awful.
I might go for a short run (walk?) on my usual loop around the 'hood. It's approximately 2.5-3ish miles depending which way I go. It's only supposed to be 104 today.4 -

How long have you been running? Do you have a story to share?
I was overweight for most of my childhood. I skimmed down in high school and then packed the pounds back on in college. I was never athletic, and I was that kid that was always picked last because I was afraid of the balls and couldn’t run fast.
After college, I made an effort to lose weight, and I dropped about 65 lbs. In my late 20’s, I tried the Couch to 5K, and I ran a couple of local races, always quite slow, but proud that I finished.
About 6 years ago, my best friend said we should sign up for a half marathon to give us a goal for getting in shape. I knew little about training and found something online that I halfway followed. I finished and signed up again the next year, taking the training more seriously and taking 12 minutes off my time. I since completed a third half.
I’ve done a few 5K/10K races the last few years and have actually placed in my age group, although I am still a lot slower than many of you! But that is ok. I am a better me than I once was.
So, my new goal is to complete a full marathon. I don’t really have a time goal, and I know there will be some walking (I am making an effort though to not let any walking go more than 30 seconds), but I want to complete the distance. I’m hard on myself about a lot of stuff, but I feel good when I meet a goal.

I was listening to dh today, a bit frustrated with his perceived lack of progress. Those that have been here long enough, recognize that speed and distance are something thats fought for daily in a never ending training cycle. Not mearly won after a month or two of serious effort. The pay off is always seemingly just out of reach. Yet we all continue to strive to conquer that one more mile, just a little bit faster. Or in short that PR.
So, here we are midway through the year and before long it'll be cold (or hot), we'll be upon another season of tempting holiday foods, listening to friends and colleagues pledge that the next year will be met with great improvement, assessing our personal gains and losses, and reflecting on friendships we treasure through running.
Where are you in this journey?

I'm firmly in the honeymoon phase of my running journey. A lot of the early grind was done last year - building up my endurance with regular walking, transitioning to a run/walk mix, being able to run a mile at a go, figuring out the "slower is better" method to start building distance. And then the snow fell and the ice started building up and I switched from running to bodyweight and mixed cardio workouts (after about a month trying and failing to get into the habit of using my exercise bike) and eventually weight lifting, which was a revelation in itself but never triggered that same "high" as running.
I ran twice in February and five times in March, and then the weather finally broke the last week of April and I've run at least three times a week ever since. To be honest looking back, the challenges have been minimal and manageable so far: a little knee pain, deciding to switch from lifting weights three times a week to twice a week so I had the time and energy to run more, putting weight loss on the back burner for the last month or so. It turns out that I simply love running, so that's my focus right now.
Where am I going from here? I'm still figuring that out. It's early enough days that I'm hitting at least one PR most weeks without really trying. I feel confidant that I can get faster and run further if I just keep at it, and since I'm still enjoying both aspects of running I don't feel much pressure to focus on one or the other. If I enjoy my race next week that opens up a whole new avenue of challenges. I know that nothing lasts and neither will this honeymoon stage, but I'm going to do my best to enjoy it while I can!11 -

As for your question... it's kind of funny you ask because I spent part of the day yesterday putting all my races in a spreadsheet. And then, of course, I had to analyze it. I wrote a blog post about it and my pace yesterday. I can see where I trained well. I know exactly which half marathon I did with zero training. I know that after my January half if I don't keep running I slack and then my March races suffer. I won't post a link here because we can self-promote but if you are interested, the URL is the same as my username.
I basically took 2017 off thinking something was wrong with me. There was but not what I thought. I am now taking meds and doing exercises for it and it seems to be doing better.
I am getting ready to start marathon training (again) on July 9th. I need to finish it. I've started training twice before for marathons and never finished. Now it's become a mental block I think. I am working to get faster because I am still 3-ish minutes from my "usual" trained race pace thanks to having almost a year off. I have been working to get a good base going. I need to work on sleep and diet more. I am getting more consistent with the strength training again. I'm working on my mindset (If you haven't read Let Your Mind Run by Deena Kastor I HIGHLY recommend - there were moments I was nearly in tears. Her writing is beautiful and impactful).6 -

Had my right hip replaced at 24, both replaced at 44. Started running a little over 7 years ago at age 53. Did a couple of 5ks, and a couple of half marathons in the first year of running, then a handful of 30k trail races and now I do 50k trail races (8 so far) and one attempt at a 50M, but missed a cut-off and DNFed. I am going back to Wisconsin next year for the redemption race. The only "marathons" I have run have been 26 mile solo training runs and when I cross that distance in a race. I am a slow, awkward, plodding runner with no scientific approach. I am an old school "just tie your shoes and run" runner. I only run in zero drop shoes, but I don't proselyte. Running keeps me off xanax and ativan and makes me quasi-pleasant to be around.
P.S. Loving everyone's stories here so far. I never tire of reading about people's journeys.9 -

That was a really interesting post - I misunderstood and thought it was here at MFP at first, which is why I sent a friend request, but I found it eventually. I love playing with numbers so it's interesting to hear from other people who feel the same. I can't imagine how frustrating it must be to have to build back your pace the way you have, but it's awesome that you're doing it!3 -

Nah, I get it. Although I have to wonder if any of the mods bother trying to keep up with these crazy big posts - it's pretty well behaved in these parts anyhow. I've been poking my head out into the main forums again after taking a break for a few weeks and definitely notice the difference!2 -
My running journey.... when did I start running? It’s kind of a “which time?” Sort of question. I will have to work on that answer. But it is essentially a lot of getting on a wagon, falling off the wagon, getting ran over by the darn things a few times, rinse, and repeat - since like fall of 2011 maybe?
Well... since I had essentially made 30in June, I was going to have a 40mile July goal.... but... y’all are good at this peer pressure thing. 50 miles club it is.

And I didn’t see any baseballs, but I would agree with 70mph velocity. Also, we apparently had a tornado on top of it all. Soooo way too skeeerry to run Friday. Yesterday had storm clouds that I was very skeptical of due to Friday’s crazy... and it was an obstacle course outside. Today was still a bit of an obstacle course, glass and plastic everywhere, entire trees down, let alone branches, saw fences down, swingsets down... not to mention you know who has garages and who doesn’t right now. My poor deer hunting car, had gotten fixed, with a new front end, and new windshield... all of 10 days ago... yeah, my insurance folks are going to love me. Anyone know how many claims you can have in a month before your car insurance suggests you start seeing other people?
But anyways.. 4/50 for the month.
Next race: 7/4 fire cracker 5k (am I the only one who thinks somebody missed an excellent opportunity to have a 4K? Or a 4mile?)6 -

I slept in this morning and it was glorious. That meant it was too late to both run and walk the dog before the heat got too bad, so I chose walking the dog on the shaded trails. I was still plenty sweaty when we got back home. Then I went to the gym and did my run on the treadmill. It's always hard to start the new month total - so far to go!

Thanks for the group question @Elise4270. I also really like hearing people's stories, whether they've been runners forever or are just starting.
As for me, I started running just about 3 years ago. I was trying to work my way out of a really bad time in my life, grief and depression had gotten me to my highest weight and feeling hopeless. I had always been overweight by smaller or larger amounts from childhood on, and never remotely athletic (but now I wish I had tried more things, because I know I could have). I started using MFP to help lose weight and really wanted to work on being more active. I was swimming, and walking, and doing some classes at the Y. I even started using a C25K app, although I never really believed I could actually run, when I saw an announcement about a Walk to Run program from the Y. Somehow I convinced myself to try it, and that's the thing that changed my life. I met the coach, who honestly cared about us beginning walker/runners and made us think we could do it - a little bit at a time. I also met another woman that first session who had the same kind of look on her face, like "what the hell am I doing here" and we bonded over our fears and encouraged each other.
That coach is still my coach, and the woman is still my great friend and running buddy (although life circumstances keep her from running as much these days). I did my first 5k in October of 2015, in which I finished dead last by a wide margin (lesson learned about signing up for a fraternity/sorority sponsored race full of college kids) but felt so accomplished. I "graduated" up to the regular run program, and then in the spring my friend and I decided very warily to take a leap and train for a half marathon in the fall. We ran our half in October of 2016. I told people after that that I did not necessarily want to run any more long races, I just wanted to keep running and enjoy it. Well, that didn't last too long and now I have done a total of 8 half marathons. I am training for my first marathon, which will be in October this year. I never would have thought I would be doing this. I'm absolutely terrified but excited.

I wasnt going to dredge up my running story, but yall are all so incredibly inspiring, I'll make it a quick one.
I've run off and on since 2005. I picked it up as a way to be unavailable after ending a relationship, hitting a wall in grad school and as a means to figure out which direction i was going. Another relationship, no running, ate horrible gained 40 pounds over 4-5 years. Then decided it was time, once again to find a new direction.
2010 picked it up again. Never gained real momentum. By March 2012 i had debilitating pain with, (simplest explanation but not exactly)- piriformis syndrome. I ran fairly regularly but still with little progress until '15 when i found this group. Thats where my running education started. Set a goal, stay connected, listen to your body, be impressed by your mental and physical ability.. (PS) Surgery June 2016 had me down for 8+ months, made a bit of a comeback last summer only to encounter ITBS. Surgery to address it this past January, and here i am, once again fighting to make a comeback.
I think each run i think "why am i doing this? Its so dam hard and everything hurts" i don't know why. Maybe i like pain, or the self challenge. If i give up, then I've given in. The fight will be lost.11 -
So I've started videoing my runs and they're really bouncy as you would expect given I'm holding a cell phone in my hand to record. Has anybody else here recorded runs, or even bike rides or skiing for that matter? What sort of gear do you use if so? I would like to invest in equipment that doesn't give viewers motion sickness as at this point I think my videos are easier to listen to than to watch and podcast isn't really what I'm going for.

Hey, so the big thing would be to get a Gimble. Whether or not you use a phone, GoPro, or any other kind of camera, a Gimble will make a HUGE difference in stability. They are A few hundred dollars for a decent one though.
The next best thing would be a head-mounted camera. It will be far more stable their then in your hands, and and the benefit of being able to aim the camera just by looking at what you want in the video. It also frees up your hands for doing stuff like drinking or fighting off ninjas.
Or just keep doing what you are doing. You might want to wait and see how serious you are really going to be with this before you buy anything.0 -
Hi all! It’s the dog days of summer here in the mid-Atlantic USA, so much heat and the fact I promised myself I’d decrease my mileage for awhile (injuries) means I’m aiming for 15 miles a week- 2 short runs and one long-ish run. It just occurred to me while scrolling through this post, I gotta figure out when to start training for my fall half. Anyone else doing the Disney World Wine and Dine?3

Morning everyone. I'll be doing my first official training run today towards my half. I'm so excited. It's really fun to say it starts today. It's the middle of winter here so I'll be running tonight. My first run is 5x 1.3k runs with short 160m walks. To keep this challenging, ill be running "sprints". My 10k pace is around 6:44min/km and my 5k pace is around 5:55ish so I'll aim for 6min/km. Does that sound best? I'm really second guessing myself because I can happily run around 7km so doing a broken 6.5 feels wrong.
Oh another idea, do the same plan but use the "walking" as sprints? That would be better training right?0 -

Went to the Greenway with Skip. She had 11 on her schedule for today. It was her first run that long, her longest was 10. She would pass me on the Greenway and I’d say great job honey great pace. At her mile 9.5ish she said I need you. I ran with her about a half mile. I told her I was holding her back ruining her pace. She left me and when she finished she was so happy she cried. She met me at the end and said mommy I love you I could have never finished without your support thanks for being the best mom. Omg I cried. I’m going to miss her when she leaves for college. I’m going to have to find me a kid to run with me lol. The time I ran with her was her worst mile and said who cares.15 -

Eight more days like today and I'll blow my goal out of the water
Race report!
Okay so let me rewind a bit. The 15K start time was scheduled for 7:25 but free parking was also extremely limited so we set alarms for 5AM with the goal of rolling out the door by 6AM, which would have us to the Legislature buildings by ~6:20 since traffic would be light.
I stayed up a bit later than planned and my head hit the pillow around 11PM. Not ideal, but whatever.
At 11:30 Kid B came in and threw a sleepy tantrum because he couldn't find his water bottle. Husband retrieved it. Kid B settled down in my bed. Awesome.
11:45 PM kid A came in, and he's getting really big and tall with arms and legs everywhere. He woke up Kid A again. Kid A then had a tantrum about the toy he went to bed with and how it was nowhere to be found. I looked for it and did not find it and by the time I came back they had taken over my side of the bed completely.
So I went to the boys' bedroom and set myself up on the bottom bunk.
About 15 minutes later my Garmin started beeping, vibrating, and acting altogether strange. I managed to turn it off. I slept in there from around 12:45 to 3:45 and woke up with a sore back. Went back to my room and moved the kids enough to fit in my own bed.
At 5 AM the alarm went off and I jolted out of bed to take my Synthroid. Then at 5:30, peanut butter toast and half a cup of coffee for breakfast. Discovered that my triathlon GPS watch is showing signs and symptoms of water damage from swimming yesterday. (Side note: now it won't even turn on - I'm calling support tomorrow although I expect I won't get thru til Tuesday due to Monday being a holiday in lieu. At least it's only 2 months old!)
Out the door later than planned and we got to the Leg around 6:45. We took one of the last free parking spaces. Hung around for a bit and took a family team selfie.
7:25 and we were off. I seeded myself to the back because I'm slow. We rounded the first corner and then went down... and down... and down. Continued along the river front and then back up the on-ramp to one of the bridges, across the river and straight into a local park. We did a full loop of the park, then up one of the more punishing hills in the city, then a sharp left near the top of the hill and into the university district along the top of the valley. Did a loop there, then a bit further up that same hill as we came back on to that road. Hit the turnaround, and then alllll the way back down to the bottom of the hill and across the bridge again, back along the river front, and back up the hill to the finish line.
I think this is the best race I've run all year even though I felt undertrained leading up to it. Average pace of 8:17, and I held that pretty steady the entire race. I think my running pace was closer to 7:30 at my fastest, but it's hard to tell from Strava. Stupid Garmin letting me down. I finished in 2:04:03 according to the official clock. I was just barely starting to cramp up as I approached the finish line. Had a smile on my face the entire 15 km and just felt Good the entire run. Happy. The nice breeze and frequent shade might have helped too!
Now that I've written this up and washed my clothes I'll head out to update my vlog - I'll add that to the comments on my Facebook version of this race report!

Group Question???
How long have you been running? Do you have a story to share?
I have had pretty bad asthma since I was a little kid. Needless to say, I was never athletic. But I digress...
So about 6 years ago at age 49, I started concentrating on my fitness and lifting and walking for cardio. As I was walking one day, I decided to see if I could run half a mile. I actually did it without wheezing. I was so surprised, I tried it the next day. And the next, etc. I got to where I could run a mile and was inspired to try a 5k. I guess I grew out of my asthma, for the most part. I still struggle with it occasionally, but it is only on really bad air quality days.
So it's been 6 years running (almost to the day), and have done 4 half marthons, several 15Ks, 10Ks, and 5Ks. This coming January I committed to run my first marathon at age 56. I can't imagine ever not running anymore. It is my salvation. Althogh I don't get any support from my wife. She thinks it is stupid to put one's body through all that pain and suffering.
So I find most of my support through this group!

Late to the party for July. Finished June with 57.83 of my 160 mile nominal goal, having blown my goal of remaining uninjured. Working my way back. For July,
Nominal mileage goal: 100 miles
Real goals: Get healthy. Build base. Work toward being able to run Wineglass in September.
0 miles today, 0 total in July. This is according to plan, so far.
Today's Notes: Ran a 5 mile trail race yesterday, felt Achilles twinge at 1.6 miles, ran on anyway, iced the Achilles, and it felt totally normal today. Yesterday I resolved that today should be a rest day, even if everything felt perfect.
Everything felt perfect, and it's been hard to keep myself from just going out for an easy 3 to 5 miles. But I need to not do that. It does help a little that it's currently 99º F outside; but I still kind of want to get out there for something short.
PT tomorrow, and the week won't have a normal training schedule. So I'll just have to see what tomorrow and Tuesday look like. Probably a bad idea to sign up for a 4th of July race, even though I'd kind of like to do the Firecracker 4 mile again.
