When you fast your body can’t get it’s energy from food so it uses your glucose which is found in your liver and muscles, that process usually happens around 8 hours after your last meal. When that stores glucose has been used up the body then starts to burn fat to get its energy which is why you lose weight. I 110% think that fasting is a great way to lose weight and works well
well if it improves cholesterol then mine should have never been high. Ive fasted all my life.
That’s unusual, I guess that’s probably down to the food that you consume when you do eat, if your eating foods that are bad for your cholesterol then I’m not surprised?16 -

Then how do you not see that there is not great about IF? If fasting had all these qualities that you have attributed to it, it shouldn't matter what was eaten in the window of time because the fasting should have been enough on it's own.10 -

Dietary cholesterol has a minimal effect upon levels of body cholesterol.8 -

Where are you getting that she is eating food bad for her cholesterol or that would be an issue. If someone has hypercholesterolemia, food could be an issue possibly. But that is a small % of the population and for the rest, there is little to know relationship between dietary cholesterol and serum cholesterol. If you bothered to do any research, you would have found this. Again, it's best not to make statements on topics on which you are not well versed. You just cause yourself to seem arrogant and ill informed.5 -

Not unusual. I also basically did 16:8 for much of my life because I never ate breakfast. I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and pre-diabetic blood work. I had these things namely because I got fat and was inactive...I gained 40 Lbs over 8ish years doing 16:8.
Guess what happened when I lost 40 Lbs? Oh, and I didn't fast when I lost weight...I started eating breakfast and decided I really liked starting my day that way.
I have no issue with fasting and IF...I know a lot of people who do it..but the benefits you are touting are largely attributable to losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight, not fasting. The same can be said for any diet or WOE...people tend to overlook the fact that perhaps it was actually improvement in overall diet and losing weight that was the "miracle"...not the WOE.7 -

How do know it's unusual? I think you need to retake some basic physiology. You're completely out of your depth in this.9 -
yep and I have familial hypercholesterolemia. although I didnt share that info because to me that made it irrelevant to IF and the claims of lowering cholesterol.as for eating good or bad food. it didnt matter what I ate it was still high even with meds,a healthy weight, diet and exercise. This time around I found a medication that works with my low fat diet. as for bad foods, foods high in fat/cholesterol are bad for me when they may not be for every thing else. even eating as clean as I could didnt result in lower cholesterol numbers. it was still high. its normal now after 15 years and fasting had nothing to do with that

I did an intermittent fasting for about a month and I must say that it really is effective as I lose 10lbs.2

If it works for people to help get them into a deficit, great. I personally don't do it. I love my breakfast as soon as I wake up in the morning. Also I have tried training fasted (both cardio and lifting) and it was not good for me. I was dizzy, felt weak, headache, growling stomach, so distracted since all I could think about was food. My performance was shot. So.. not for me.4

These are doctrinaire statements asserted as if fact.
I do have research and studies that back those claims up but those were dismissed as false, woo, or quack here.
Fung is frequently dismissed as a quack, because.... he is. Here are some great articles discussing the holes in his theories and statements:
https://www.diabetes-warrior.net/2015/04/24/what-the-fung/
https://www.diabetes-warrior.net/2015/04/20/fung-us-among-us/
https://www.myoleanfitness.com/evidence-caloric-restriction/
If you actually read those articles, you will see that the writer also advocates FOR intermittent fasting. He may not agree with how Dr. Fung got to the conclusion, but he does agree on the conclusion that a low-carb, intermittent fasting diet is best for those with Insulin Resistance.
What I don't agree with, however, is that the writer on Diabetes Warrior claims that "high blood sugar" is the root cause of the problem. But high blood sugar doesn't happen on its own. It is caused, and therefore can not, in itself, be a "root cause". He needs to go one step deeper into the cause of the high blood sugar. Is it a high sugar/carb diet? Is it a defect in certain peoples' metabolic systems? He didn't go into that and should have.2 -

Those were posted in discussion of why Fung's a quack. Low carb is often helpful for people with IR, but not universally. No one is saying IF isn't effective, just that the science on it's effect on longevity and cancer prevention is not developed to the point of being able to make the statements that were made earlier in the thread.9 -
Fasting doesnt cleanse and there is not need to cleanse. Just dont eat crap and your kidneys and liver do it on their own.
Fasting I dont get. I cant workout on an empty stomach. Those who fast cram food in a little window. Still eating same amount of calories. I would rather space it out when im awake.
I need fuel. I stop eating dinner 6pm and dont eat again until 6-7am. So im sleeping through it.
Eat real foods. Portion control. I think of food as fuel and medicine for my body.
Fruit, veggies, protein, dairy, healthy fat and whole grains. Each meal balanced.2 -

Why is it so hard to admit that eating less calories than you burn is the reason one loses weight, but believing a diet did that is more credible? This supports my theory cling on diets like they do with politics and religion. They fall in love with their diets so much that they throw facts out the door in order to believe that it's their diet that has done all the miracle work.9 -

Yup. I'd rather credit my awareness, diligence and effort than any diet or IF window for my success in long-term weight management.6 -

I fast and have done so all my life. most days its 16:8(yesterday it was a lot less than that) but other days its 18:6. I eat throughout my window of time. I dont eat very large meals or cram it in. if you stop eating dinner at 6 and dont eat until 6-7 then in a sense that is fasting too by definition. most of the time I cannot eat very big meals or I bloat and feel awful. which is why I eat throughout the day and get my calories in during that window of time.I work out in the evening when I have the most energy. I cant do a fasted workout either unless its walking.1 -
My cat fasts all day. He eats first thing in the morning and last thing before bed.
He is a slim cat so it works for him......me on the other hand.3 -
Works for me. I do 23:1. I eat only once a day. I eat a big meal, usually 1k-1.5k calories. Drink water and coffee the rest of the day. Works for me because I dont snack my way to maintenance or more. I can eat what I want as well. Not for everyone.2

I'm a huge fan of it. Been doing i.f. for better calorie control but recently incorporated a few days of extended fast for menopause relief. I'm not doing any hormone replacement and was having a devil of a time with mood, hot flashes, sleeplessness. Since doing 1 to 3 water fast days every few weeks, ALL are resolved. Woo it if you want but this improved my quality of life.7

As you know, I'm an IF fan BUT I hear you - that is well-said.0 -
How do you feel about eating it all back...rebound weight gain with friends, that's how I feel about fasting.
If fasting worked there would be no such thing as repeat customers for losing weight. You would fast and be fixed for the rest of your life. Same with dieting. One extra special diet, one time and all of the weight woes would be fixed. Constant dieting and fasting...has that changed everything for you then.11 -
Tried IF, worst 6 hours ever! It's not sustainable long term for me.1
-
Man, I don't even like fasting for a blood draw at 7:30 in the morning, and I'm asleep for over half that time.3
