But if I am a fatty, so be it, because if I lost 14 pounds to placate the BMIs, I would be such a skinny little bltch third grade girls could beat my *kitten*.
No, for a man at 5'7" and 158 lbs., you are in the "Normal / Healthy" range with a BMI of 24.75. If you gained 2 lbs., you would be "Overweight" with BMI over 25. To reach "Obese," at your height, you need to weigh more than 200 lbs.
I'm 5'7" and hover in the low to mid 150's lbs. But I'm more interested in body fat %. I would like to reach below 10% and that means losing around 12-13 lbs. For now, I'm maintaining weight as I increase mileage. I'll worry about those last few lbs. later.5 -
@hesn92 - One trick that I use in my mileage posts is to include a word that isn't common. In my case I go to agility class each week with my dog (it is truly a workout in itself) so I note the agility days along with my run mileage. I also have races listed that I can search on as well. That makes it easy for me to find and copy a previous post and add to it.
@MegaMooseEsq - I run 5 days a week typically with a midweek rest day and a weekend rest day. I also lift twice a week with a trainer and lifting heavy as well. On those lifting days I typically run in the morning (3-5 miles) and lift late in the afternoon. My trainer always checks in to see how I am feeling, did I run that day and how far/fast and adjusts what we are doing accordingly. Doesn't necessarily mean less just maybe not as much focus on legs but more on full body or upper body. He also cuts back on the lower body impact the week or so before I have a race. For example tonight will be my last strength workout before my HM on the 29th. There have been days where I have a specific run on the plan that I had to modify after a tough lifting session but I have also had some where I thought my legs would be too trashed to run the next day and they felt amazing.
@pastorvincent - funny how our societal norms still have the expectation of the woman taking care of the husband and somehow being responsible for what and how much he eats or not. I personally don't have that kind of control over mine and wouldn't want the responsibility. Besides he would hate me because I would take all of his junk/sweet food away Like @kcs76 says - my mouth would get me in trouble in that situation too!
@polskagirl01 - The charts are ok as a reference point but even a lot of practitioners don't like them, especially when used alone. You can have very low BF and still be too high on the BMI chart.
@hesn92 - over time the cushioning (foam) in your shoes will dry out so if you have had them for years, whether you ran in them or not I would get new running shoes and keep those for walks and hikes and other non-running activities. Running shoes have changed and evolved a lot too with many options and levels of cushioning, etc.. I would recommend going to a running focused store and have a gait analysis done to get you in the correct shoes. Just use caution if they try to sell you orthotics.1 -

Thanks @PastorVincent, @kgirlhart, and @shanaber! Last October I posted one of those “do I really need a rest day?” posts on the fitness forum and got some very helpful advice that mostly boiled down to “yes” and “never jog in place at stop lights”. I realized that I’ve primarily been struggling mid-week after my Monday deadlifting workout, so I think moving that forward a day and adding a mid-week rest day is probably the simplest tweak. I had a really good stretching session earlier today so that’s going right on the schedule going forward.
I think I’d like to work up to running a half marathon, but I’m not in any sort of rush - I just want to keep running, keep lifting, and avoid hurting myself. I realized looking at the HH plan that I’m really not ready to commit to more than about an hour of “workout” time most days. Given my current pace, the HH plan would have me at about an hour and a half three days a week and I’m just not down for that right now.
So for the rest of July going into August I’ll start off with this and see how it goes:
Monday: 3-3.5 miles
Tuesday: 1 mile/lift (deadlift/inverted row/OHP)
Wed: rest/stretch
Thurs: 2-3 miles
Fri: lift (squat/BP/1h row)/stretch
Sat: Long run
Sun: rest/stretch2 -

I had a 4 mile run scheduled for tonight, but it is POURING outside with lots of thunder. I took tomorrow off, so I suppose I’ll try to get up while it is still cooler to get it in before my strength training later in the day.3
-
Also, I had planned to order new running shoes tomorrow since it will be pay day, and the sale price went up today! I’ll probably still order them, but I am bummed.0

Well, yesterday turned out to be a rest day since my daughter needed me to drive her around to appointments (she goes to get her license tomorrow...pray for us all) and I ran out of time to run, which was a shame because the weather was perfection. It was still really nice today so I ran 5 stinkin' miles at the lake and I'm really proud of myself! I have faith that I'll be running 6 by the end of August (if my bra chafe doesn't kill me first), so I'm going to start shopping around for a 10K in September. There's one at the park where I normally run, but it might be nice to do something a little different.
Thanks, everyone who weighed in on wearables. It sounds like I'm going to need to do some more research! I'm wondering if someone local would have a used one for me to buy to make sure I like it before dropping the $$$ on a new one.
It's supposed to be nice again tomorrow, so I'll have time for a run and perhaps begin my ark-building before the next 7 days of forecast rain and thunderstorms...

I ordered more Nike Pegasus 34s.
Loved my first pair. I've worn them for fast 5km runs, and on my 50 km run. Never any problems.
The 35s are out, but I really wanted to get another pair of 34s since I know they're awesome.
I found them in my size and with $50 off too! Win!4 -

@marisap2010 Don't be bummed. Look elsewhere!
Unless you have a Size 14 Narrow or something that's only available in one place, there must be hundreds of places to order from.0 -
@Elise4270 It's supposed to be cooler in the early hours of the morning...or at least that's the theory anyway; if only it were true.
Got in 13 miles this morning...8 by myself, and then 5 more with the group. One of the runners asked me to pace her for the Tour des Fleurs half marathon this September, so I said I'd do it. She offered to get my ticket, but I told her not to worry and I'd pay for my own entry, to which she said that if I paid for it myself, then I'd obviously want to race and wouldn't be able to pace her. Yeah, the race is mid September, which means it'll still be hotter than Ol' Nick's nutsack, so no, I most certainly won't want to race it!

Unlike those of you roasting in the heat, we had a gorgeous day here. I went kayaking this morning and it was just perfect out on the lake. Then I took the dog for a nice long walk. I debated because Thursdays or Fridays are usually my rest day, but it was just too nice I didn't want to miss the chance so I ran this evening. My only complaint was that the sun was right at the wrong angle and in my eyes. I should have worn my hat.
Hang in there everyone in the hot zones.
Also, any of our members who are in Iowa, hope you are all okay. I saw that tornadoes hit there today, including in my hometown. @karllundy I know is from the general area and I think someone else?

Hey all.
Yeah BMI sux. and no one really wants to get a DEXA to find out their composition - at lease here, its not easy to get them anyway.
I cant decide if I should run or not. Tomorrow is a forced rest day - it would usually be my long run day but hubby is out of town so I am alone with the kids. I kinda want to run, but kinda dont, and the don't is currently winning. This week has been all over the place, and I just feel like my rhythm has been thrown off. I havent even done any weights this week! Ill see how I feel in an hour or so. sigh. part of me thinks this is just my mind going take a break, it wont hurt, and given ive gone from doing about 10-15k a week to around 30k, including a regular 10k run...
blah blah moan blah lol. TGIF!3 -
Well okay! I log in and discover the forums have totally changed, and now I can't see my notifications unless I turn my device sideways, because the forums don't scale properly. Hate it!
We ran today, despite being "on vacation." It was pretty bad - 104 degrees and the GPS quit in the middle of a run in an unfamiliar neighborhood so we got lost. Still, we did it, 5 miles through hell plus three miles of walking. And we are alive to tell about it.
Also, the pool was bright green when we got back. So no more swimming while we are here probably, since the pool people came and shocked the pool and it doesn't seem to be helping. Another thing that's due to the unreasonable heat. I'm about sick of this weather.

7/16 – rest day
7/17 – 6.35 warmup, speed work
7/18 – 7.14 group run
7/19 – 10.01 MP intervals
July running total to date – 100.06
Nominal July mileage goal: 100 miles
Real goals: Get healthy. Build base. Work toward being able to run Wineglass in September.
Today's notes – Today I decided I'm healthy enough to run the Oak Tree Half on September 2. It's a challenging course, and it is possible that we can still get hot weather on Labor Day weekend; but it's also a pretty course, and it's a Rochester Runner of the Year race. So I committed.
This evening Garmin says it was 82º F (28º C) when I ran. Went to club practice, but took off running before Coach got there because the workout on the marathon training plan was a 10 mile continual run: 2 easy, 3 MP, 2 easy, 2 MP, 1 easy. I moved the intervals around to be 2-3-1-2-2 because I wanted to be able to run all of the MP on the Erie Canal Trail and have easy running to and from the canal where it isn't as easy to do speed work.
Target pace for easy was between 7:45 and 8:10 per mile. Target pace for MP was between 7:20 and 7:30 per mile. The easy miles went well, but I had a hard time with pace control on the MP intervals. The splits came in as:
2 easy: 7:57, 7:52
3 MP: 7:21, 7:16, 7:16
1 easy: 7:42
2 MP: 7:12, 7:12
2 easy: 7:46, 7:49
It's not that I couldn't run that fast; it's that I don't think I can sustain a 7:16 pace for 26 miles. *shrug* Just have to keep working on pace control, I guess. The last mile I was running on tired legs, which is kind of the point of this type of workout; but I was more wiped out at the end that I really should be for a 10 mile run with half of it easy.
Oh, well. Put the work in, and hopefully I'll be able to handle whatever the weather is on race day.
EDIT TO ADD: . . . and I passed my monthly mileage goal on the 19th, which mostly shows I'm not very good at predicting how much I'll run.

0720-5.1k, total-35.9k, goal-90k
Early morning run in hilly, muggy unfamiliar territory. Hong Kong has this weird weather thing going on where it rains three times an hour, 5 minutes apiece. The locals just ignore it but I have glasses and no hat so couldn't see a thing in the rain. I ran with a colleague who is a beginner runner but is 25cm (10 inches) taller than me, which makes his stride way longer so speed was a bit wonky. We did get to see a bigass rainbow toward the end though.

Looking like I will have to take a DNS at the Liberty Get Well race this week. It is on the same day that we are closing on the house... ah well.4

I'm only 10 miles in so far this month. I have really been splitting my time with swimming, biking and running for triathlon stuff.
I am super excited to meet IRL and run a race with @Elise4270 this weekend in Oklahoma!
Nervousness hasn't set in yet. It's been so hot, I think I'm brain dead. I'm just going to focus on hanging out and having Mexican food
I'm glad at least one of us isn't nervous. It has been so hot that I can't fathom to run outside and our house is under construction and can't get to the treadmill. ACK! I can't wait to hang out and eat mexican food on Sat!1
