Real goals: Avoid injury. Continue to build base and train toward Oak Tree Half and Wineglass Marathon.
Today's Yesterday's notes – Slept late, looked at the forecast. 6 PM it was supposed to be 85º F (29º C). The dew point was already 70º. What could be more fun than running a 10K in the heat and humidity? So about 10 AM I registered to run Pound the Ground 10K at 6 PM.
The forecast wasn't entirely accurate. It turned out to by 86º F, with 70º F dew point. Got to Mendon Ponds Park just after 5, found my bib and took one picture of the festivities:
Ran my warmup as an out and back on the last mile of the course, just to get the end of the course fresh in my mind. Felt really creaky at the start of the warmup, reasonably loose but very sweaty by the time I finished. Got to the start line. The crowd is fairly small. A young guy I don't know looks like a runner, but talks about trails and being ready to die after averaging 7:22 per mile for a half. I walk forward from where he is.
I line up right on the line. We go off. There are 5 people in front of me. I pass one, never see him again. Pass a woman maybe a quarter mile in. There are now 3 people in front of me. That can't hold up.
It didn't. The woman caught up to me about 1.5 miles in, and slowly edged away from me for the rest of the race. About 2.5 miles in, a 48 year old guy I knew passed me, then I passed him, then he passed me and slowly added to his lead.
Got to the halfway point, and saw the clock tick to 21:00 just before I passed 5K. You've got to be kidding me. No way I'm running that fast in this heat and humidity. Yes, you are, says the volunteer. And I remember that the first half of this course is easier.
After that, it was just try to run decent tangents. The guy ahead of me was doing a good job with tangents, helping my memory where I couldn't see the good tangent because of the hills. Late in the course, there's an out and back away from the main loop. This let me see the leader, and how far behind me the next guy was.
The next guy was pretty far behind me. I knew I didn't have to kill it to finish 6th, and I'd really have to kill it to finish 5th. I decided to run to survive, not to kill the course.
The end of the course is 200m downhill to the finish line. It's built for a good finish line kick, and a couple years ago the town paved that road. (Previously, it had been gravel with advantage to good trail runners.) Put on some speed to look good finishing. Saw the clock, tried to beat 43 minutes, didn't make it.
Final time was 43:11, 6th of 95 overall, 4th male, 1st of 2 in the 61-65 age group. I don't know why Pound the Ground uses age groups with 5's at the top instead of 5's at the bottom, but it does. It's the only race I've ever seen with these odd age groups.
Thought of you all, and took a picture of the major awards:
The soldier statues went to the first overall male and female for the 10K and the 5K. There are only 3 because the woman's 10K winner had to leave early and took her trophy before I got a picture. The Golden Boot is a rotating trophy for branch of service. This year, the Navy successfully defended their championship from last year and gets the Boot for another year.
Age group winners got a nice looking challenge coin:
I went in thinking, low key race, hot, humid. Ended up running it as a race anyway, but I think I ran it smart enough. I could have worked really hard to try to catch the next guy (37 seconds ahead of me). That would have risked injury, had no guarantee of success, and had no upside other than bragging rights. So I ran the last mile and a half just to be fast enough not to let someone else pass me. Never heard footsteps, and the next finisher was about 3 minutes behind me. Guess I could have run that last mile easier, but I don't have eyes in the back of my head so I didn't know.
I think I'm over my injuries, and really into training now. Just have to not overdo it, build the mileage, and be ready for Wineglass. Oh yeah, and be ready for Oak Tree on September 2. Oak Tree has hills, and can be hot and humid. That was the idea with running Pound the Ground, race training for Oak Tree with heat and humidity. I'm pretty happy with how it worked out as a nice midweek speed workout.

So tragic. Terribly sorry to hear such news. I did not know him, but my thoughts are with his family. Very sad indeed.

So sad and shocking. If I don't get to run today in his memory, I will dedicate some miles in the morning. My dad's barn on our family farm caught fire some time in the wee hours of morning. Total loss. I've been up since we discovered it at 3:15 am and I'm beat. This is a picture after it got daylight. Thankfully, no animals or people were involved.

From personal experience, I know that I was diagnosed as a "strong overpronator" when I started running and went to a specialist store with video gait analysis. The diagnosis was repeated the next two times I did an analysis, and I always bought stability shoes with 12mm drop. I was pretty much fine with that - had a bit of shin splints every now and then, but nothing too bad. Until one day (due to a bit of confusion at the store when the shoes I was looking for were sold out and the store employe obviously mixed up his recommendations) I bought the Brooks PureFlow 3, which were neutral shoes with 4mm drop. I couldn't exchange them right away after I noticed, so I tried them out and didn't have any problems. Actually, even the shin splints went away and didn't come back, but I don't know if that was due to shoes or coincidence. So since 2014 I've switched to neutral shoes with 4-6mm drop.
(not the PureFlow anymore, I really loved the 3s, but when I bought the 5 I found Brooks had changed them and they seemed too narrow in the toe box anymore).
I did have some trouble with my left knee last year, but I blame that on a combination of ramping up distance too aggressive during marathon training, and the Saucony Kinvaras that started breaking down already around 300/400km (and I kept running in them too long since I didn't want to believe it, I usually put twice that distance on a pair of running shoes before retiring them).
I'm not saying shoes with less flex aren't going to help you, but you don't have assume that less stable shoes are automatically worse. And maybe you could look into some strength training that would help with weaknesses or imbalances in the hips or glutes, sometimes shoes are not the only think to blame if you feel pain while running.

Ill see if I can find the article and have a proper read when I get to work.I know that even since I was a teenager I've looked for good arch suppein shoes or I would have pains in my ankles similar to what I'm getting now. I remember wearing really bad shoes about 10 years ago and being unable to walk because of this. When I started exercising 18 months ago I was getting pain in my knees, my physiotherapist took one look and said I overpronate and need more supportive shoes. Switched to a pair and the pains immediately went away.
I know this is all anecdotes and that does not make evidence, but I feel for me I need the support. I'm not in any pain after yesterday's test run in my old shoes SO I think it's probably that other extrememly flexibile shoe is not right for me. Add in too much, too fast, too soon and of course I got an injury. I was never happy with those shoes. And my other running shoes are definitely not as supportive. I can feel every step stretching that tendon now.
So I agree that stability shoe is probably not totally necessary, for me, i need something that's going to support my arch. Probably cognitive bias lol. ETA I do a lot id strength training for this reason.2 -

So sad to hear the news about keeprunningfatboy. He was such a supporter on strava and had an awesome sense of humour. I won't be running for the next 2 days but will dedicate my next to him. I knew him such a short time, 1.5 months but he left a lasting impression4

@Teresa502 Glad to hear there were no people or animals lost, had to respond to a barn fire a number of years back in early winter where the poor gentleman lost about 20 head of cattle and sundry other animals.1

I have been in a funk all day after hearing about @KeepRunningFatboy . He was so young. Like @MobyCarp noted, if I had died at 52, I would have never known what a gift it is to be able to run. I did not know the man and I was not here long enough to engage him much in conversation, but in one of the other forums, I was impressed when I read how he came up with his screen name. What was meant to be a hurtful insult by ignorant boys in a car was turned into motivation to succeed... and what a runner he became. The world needs more running fat boys to step up and fill his void.18

I too have been bummed about Dennis's passing even though we had never met, the common bond of being the same age, finding joy and a passion in running and his @KeepRunningFatboy name was so very clever it just made him relatable and inspirational. I saw Steve's comment on his last run earlier today but was at a loss of words to share my sadness at that time. A very nice gesture on your part to connect with him4 -

W6d2 of c25k on the treadmill at the gym - way too hot and humid for me to run outside. My 2 miles were rough - I hadn’t eaten enough so my energy was low. My anxiety/mood have been bad and I wasn’t feeling it. But better to have a bad day where I ran than a bad day with no run.
My IT band started hurting after 7-8 minutes of running. Not enough to stop me or slow me from my already slow pace (seriously, my husband went on a walk at a faster pace than I run), but enough to annoy me. I’ve tried foam rolling and stretching my hamstrings - my entire left side has been tight.
Questions - if I keep running while it’s irritated, will I do more damage? Can I/should I power through? Besides rolling, what stretches should I be doing? Should I skip running for a week or two and focus on yoga/biking/something else until it feels better? I’ve tried google and as someone who majors in minors, I’ve gotten lost down rabbit holes.

I've been doing a series of IT band strengthening exercises my sports chiropractor gave me to address knee pain back in March when I started lifting and they really helped, then I slacked off in May and June and the pain came back. I started doing them again twice a week about a month ago and have noticed a definite improvement again. I stretch occasionally when I feel stiff or sore, and don't foam roll at all. The exercises I've been doing are substantially similar to those detailed here: http://running.competitor.com/2015/03/injury-prevention/10-exercises-to-treat-it-band-syndrome_125083 - I include wall sits, bird dogs, and dead bugs and skip the pistol squats, side bridges, and hip hikes. I suspect the precise exercises matter less than consistency.2 -

Looks like since July 17th: that was 10.4 miles, everything after is 13+

But both take a time to train and both are really outdoor sports so they will be competing for the same time slots. So it comes down to where you want to spend your hours and that is completely personal preference.
Here, consider this. To train for a full marathon you will be working towards 40 miles a week roughly. If your average distance pace is like umm 11 mins/mile? that will mean you need (11*40)/60 hours, or about 8 hours for running (always round time estimates up) per week. How many hours do you want to spend on tennis? Add them up and see if you have enough If not, something has to give.
Maybe it is TV? Most Americans watch more than 8 hours of TV a week. If you gave that up might you have time for both? I do not have any TV service, not even an antenna. Made that decision almost 2 decades ago. Have never regretted it. But that is just an example of how you might manage both if that is what you want.
It's a personal choice, but not a permanent one.

Wow! Everyone on here seems to be extremely busy. It amazes me that you can work full time jobs and get ready to run a marathon at the same time, let alone having other hobbies that take your time. From reading some of your comments, I just thought I was busy! You are all an inspiration to not only run, but better prioritize my time and energy. Thanks everyone.2 -

Saddened to hear about @KeepRunningFatboy passing. He was always very encouraging on Strava.
Feeling very unprepared for Sunday. My last truly long run was several weeks ago and it's been blah the past 3. I know I can finish 21.1 km. I just don't think it will be very pretty.
Then again Jasper didn't end pretty and there are fewer hills this time and I sort of know what I'm doing with electrolytes and nutrition this time so maybe I will still finish faster.

5k on the Greenline - as we passed through the sculpture next to the road my husband and I yelled "Keep running fatboy!" for Dennis. 52 is way too young!
According to the station at the park it was 104 with a dewpoint of a dizzying 82 degrees when we ran. Not that bad surprisingly since there was a breeze and the sun was behind clouds most of the way. I am proud of us for being in good enough condition to run 5k in this heat like it ain't no thang.

Real goals: Avoid injury. Continue to build base and train toward Oak Tree Half and Wineglass Marathon.
Today's notes – Went to club practice this evening with the idea of getting in 7 to 8 easy miles. It was warmer and more humid than yesterday evening, and few people were there early. I decided to run a 2 mile warmup, then see who showed up and what Coach had to say.
That 2 mile warmup kicked my *kitten*. Didn't run fast, didn't run hard, didn't run far, and I was wiped out. Stood around dripping with sweat while Coach talked with the few people who did show up. Told him I raced yesterday and I was doing easy miles. Stood around long enough to feel rested, used the restroom again, and hit the road.
And it felt great as soon as I started running. It was still warm, it was still humid, I was still running slow; but it felt great. Who knew that I might need a warmup before an easy run? I set off to explore putting some segments I've run together in different ways, found a road that was shorter than I expected, and a front came through about 3.3 miles. Wind, clouds, looks like it could be a pop up shower. Finagled my way to head back and get at least 5 miles in.
The rain hit at 4 miles. A few drops. Big drops. Steady rain. Big drops. While on a trail headed back to base. Oh, well. I won't melt. I can probably get to the end of the trail before it gets muddy enough to be poor running. And the rain stopped. I ran about 1000 meters in the rain. Call it 5 minutes.
And the running weather was much better from 3.3 miles to the end of the run than it had been for the warmup. It was a gift.
Took a walking lap around the track, and made sure to do my full set of stretches. I'd skipped some of them after yesterday's race, and my body really appreciated getting them all in today. Rest day tomorrow, and I should be in good shape for a nice long run on Saturday.
