So far I have ran 7.6 miles in August as I have only recently begin doing this cardio. Had some unsatisfactory results from recent bloodwork showing my cholesterol as elevated as well as fasting blood sugar. Although I was just out of the "pre-diabetic" range, I wanted to get ahead of it before it becomes a problem. So for now, I am going to add cardio 3 days a week and hopefully go up from there. I will continue to log it here but I am excited to see how many miles I can do in September. Good luck all!

i'm in to help for dennis' marathon dreams or relay. just point me in the needed direction.
the 17th was an accident and i got lost. the dogs and i intended to do about half of what happened. didn't run the whole thing because i was unprepared and didn't have water for them. and the dogs were not allowed in the lake when we ran across it. though i did let them jump in a bit off the beaten path far away from the swimming area. i was disappointed the trail i had been running that was short but challenging previous years was over grown this year and completely unrunnable. the conference area looked like they haven't been keeping up with needed maintenance. trees had fallen over paths and tent sites. paths were overgrown. least this year there was enough toilet paper.
the 18th was intended and part of the plan. it was hot and humid and speed demon was lagging. there was no sweat evaporation. bug spray in the eyes hurts. but desperately needed it. we ran to the spot to let the dogs jump in the lake.
the 19th we ran the red bird at high cliff and the indian mound trail. it was a very pretty trail. it was also very flat which surprised me. my local trails are more challenging. i didn't do the most challenging since the dogs had been showing signs of being tired of this whole outdoors thing. i worked on teaching them how to navigate rocky bolder-y paths. speed demon did great once she learned how. old girl did less great but old dog new tricks...i definitely had some near falls. the state park has a pet swim area. the dogs were unsure of the waves. eventually, they got in lake.i think on sunday, speed demon was done with this whole camping thing
view from my tent
sunday walk
old girl was helping me set up friday afternoon. speed demon was practicing her camouflage
it was a 12step camp conference. i am a friend/family member 12 stepper, repping for a sober podcast
spent more time in the woods instead of open meetingsat high cliff state park. not a lot of it translated well photographically so i focused on the girlsfoster dog was grateful to be back with me. he never settled in there leading to the fosterers to decide he "needs a lot of work and isn't adoptable" mhmm. maybe he didn't like you
he is not the worse anxiety dog i've had and separation anxiety is very treatable

Got too much sleep the previous night. Ended up being pretty tired this morning, but my run went well. Nothing spectacular though. I'm able to run up to 5-6 miles now without taking a break, which is nice. Still slow as a snail, but I need to be patient with that.
Hope everyone has a good week.

Well, we're under a severe thunderstorm warning. I don't mind rain but won't run in lightning. Also, tomorrow is supposed to be perfect running weather, so it seems like the better part of valor to wait.
I'm finally back up to where I was this time last year on my lifting with my legs. That ruptured cyst really tore up my calf muscle - synovial fluid literally has acid in it, and it seems like it ate up my calf muscle pretty good. It was hugely swollen at the time, but is almost an inch smaller than the other leg now.8 -
Did 8 ugly miles this morning. I had no speed goal and am just happy to get in 8 miles - but they were considerably slower than I'd hoped. Oh well - I can check it off my training calendar.
June goal - 44/44
July goal - 52/52
August goal - 41/57 miles
Sept. 30 - Wineglass Half Marathon; Corning, NY
October 7 - Viking Dash Half Marathon; Toledo, OH10 -
Really good run this AM. Four and a half mile tempo run in the rain, started at 11’24 and down to 10’08” for the last full mile. Considering the last mile was in the rain into the wind, I'm okay with not hitting sub-10. I ended up behind a guy running about the same pace for some that last mile so I followed him for a while, which felt a little creepy but also I get why people like running with pacers. Also it felt pretty cool to be keeping up with a guy easily a foot taller than me.
I’ve decided that I want to go for it and run a half marathon in October, so I’m going to look at getting a little more structured going forward. My plan is to continue to increase my mileage on weeks I don’t have races (from 17.25 miles last week to 25-26 miles by the end of September), run about four times a week including one tempo run, one fartlek session, and one long run (increasing from 8 miles to 12 miles), and register for and run two 10Ks over the next couple of months.
I didn’t quite understand why people talked about races as motivation, since running is awesome and its own reward and all that, but I’ve got to admit having a goal is kind of exciting. I love running because of how I feel when I run and how it improves my life generally, but it doesn’t hurt having something to work towards. There was a bit of me that didn’t want to go out in the rain this morning, but another bit of me that said “what if it rains during a race? If you train in the rain, you’ll know you can race in the rain!”
Also, it appears there are other benefits to getting into racing more seriously. As an immediate example, my husband wants us to visit his terrible grandparents in September, and it turns out there are not one but TWO 10K races within easy distance of their house that month. Noice! Admittedly one is two laps around an office park and the other is two laps around a shopping mall, but what are you going to do?

Welcome to the dark side. I lined up at 5 marathons before I decided I kind of like running marathons; but I LOVE training for marathons! And my running buddies look at me oddly when I just want to do long runs but don't have any marathon planned.
All that, and a distant race is a great excuse to visit family. I'll have to think about working a half marathon in Nebraska into my schedule for that purpose.

Do many people not enjoy long runs? So far they're probably my favorite even sans race target.
Thankfully on the family side the grandparents-in-law are the only terrible relatives - my dad and sister both live in the Pacific Northwest, I've got an aunt in Chicago, step-family in Hawaii, and in-laws are in South Dakota. Plenty of great running opportunities!1 -
Morning all. I had every intention on running today but ankle was aching a bit last night and the forecast was torrential rain, and I've run 3 days in a row so thought a rest day would be a good idea. And yep when I woke up it was heavy rain. Good decision! So massaging ankle, which is niggling but no sharp pain anymore. Just a dull ache when massaging! Progress!8

I am hoping you do this again in September! I'm 63 and took up running about 6 months ago. I am trying to keep a recent 55 lb. weight loss alive. Like many late in life runners, I got a 3rd metatarsal stress fracture about 8 weeks ago. I'm hoping I'll be back to running in September. I did go out today, only did 3 miles, maybe 20% running, the rest a fast walk. Foot hurts a little, not too bad. Good luck all!!!!10

Didn't read all the posts, but I gather that @KeepRunningFatboy passed away a week or so ago? Wow! He was sooo inspirational and such a positive reminder of why we all do this and how to enjoy it. Sad. As with others, will reflect and dedicate some miles. R.I.P. Dennis - Godspeed.6

2.29 miles of intervals this morning, new phone's GPS much better than last one and consequently pace seems much more in line with when I was starting 5 years ago(never shoulda stopped but, meh, life) Working C25k for intervals. Totals for the month 48.25/55. Should have set a stretch goal but oh well ...Running the Tweetsie Trail again on 8/26 if anyone cares to join me. Gonna start at the Johnson City end and head all the way to Elizabethton in TN, trail is very nice crushed gravel and a lot of shade. If anyone cares to join me for the 10 miles let me know. Fair warning I am a fairly slow 12-13 minute mile runner.

Did a really slow 2 miles this morning...slower and shorter than planned because my beautiful 7th and 8th graders decided to join me. I burned more calories encouraging them to "run a little slower", "keep running!", or "try leading with your left foot to avoid that stitch in your side!" than I did with actual running. My boy is in scouts and needs to log "official" exercise for his next rank (they don't let you count jumping up and down like a spring while playing Mario for some reason). My girl is a competitive cheerleader--she's really strong! But she can't seem to figure out pacing herself. She's either too fast or wiped out...I don't know how to help her find that sweet spot where she can build up some endurance.
Good job on your half, @sarahthes !

I was out in a remote wilderness area for the last 9 days, without any internet except a couple times when I left briefly. Anyway, I am not going back to read the nearly 600 posts in this thread. And I was very busy with an intense class to get the Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification. I didn't get as much running on the trails as I wanted because I was quite busy, but hope to ramp up mileage again. I don't think I'll make goal this month, though.
Ticker is updated for the 39.87 miles I was actually able to get done.

8/16 - 2.17 km
8/17 - smoke
8/18 - worse smoke
8/19 - 21.1 km
55.71/125 km
I was right - it wasn't pretty LOL.
The smoke cleared out late yesterday, thankfully. It's likely not to be back until Tuesday evening.
I got up at 5:15, popped my pills, then had coffee & PB toast at 5:45. Lots of running around and getting ready. Hubby dropped me off downtown just before they closed the roads at 7:45 and then took the kids out for breakfast back close to home while I walked back and back and back to find an entrance to the starting chute. Took a selfie. The announcer mentioned that the elites for the full marathon were on pace to finish around 2:20.
I positioned myself well to the back because I am slow. This proved to be a bit of a terrible idea in hindsight because there were a lot of walkers I had to weave around.
Kept a pace I knew was too fast basically until the first aid station (2.5 km). I was almost at the aid station when the motorcade came through with the marathon lead runner. Someone in second came by about a minute later and then there was a lull before a bunch of elites came thru, plus fast people without bike pacers etc.
I slowed down to a more reasonable race pace after that, running fast (my fast, not anybody else's fast!) but comfortable and feeling generally awesome despite knowing I was undertrained. Kept a decent pace until around 12 km? I think it was 12 km. I had gone in with a plan to run as much as I could while walking thru aid stations to catch my breath, hydrate and fuel. Anyway, around 12 km I started getting really bad calf cramps. I alternated walking and running okay until about 15 km. At that point I was walking more than running probably until 18 km (Garmin says that is my slowest split).
I decided to try running again and found a sweet spot about 30 seconds slower than my LSR pace and was able to maintain that mixed with walk intervals for the last 3 km. I actually found the running less painful than walking - problem is if I did more than my body was capable of I could feel my calves start to seize and had to back off to a walk until the feeling eased.
I finished around 3:12 and change, but I finished. And I'm pretty proud of that accomplishment because I'm 15 lbs heavier than my last race and didn't die.
Now to baby my blisters and very mild chafing (from my fuel belt).

It was pretty warm and humid this morning, so I took things easy, but tomorrow the wind's supposed to come in from the north and bring cooler temps (low 70s) and a much lower dew point. That's going to be a pleasant run with the group. Wednesday is supposed to be more of the same, so I'll aim to get a nice tempo run in before rounding things off on Thursday with another easy run with the group. After that, I'm on call for a week, so whatever mileage I manage to get then will be anyone's guess.

Woke up to thunder and lightning... so I stalked the weather page and saw that it would clear out by 9am so I waited it out even though doing a short run on the treadmill crossed my mind.
I’m glad I waited. I got a good interval run in. About halfway in the sun came out and made it pretty steamy.
Afterwards I took the kids to the beach for the afternoon. Probably the last beach day of the summer, my kids go back to school next Monday!!

@workaholic_nurse You must live in my neck of the woods. I'm in the Greeneville TN area. I'm not up to running 10 miles right now, as I am just trying to get back into running, but the pace would be perfect for me. Maybe next year.4

My folks live in Jonesborough, gonna be up for the weekend visiting and @Teresa502 suggested this trail the last time I mentioned I was looking for places to run up there. Did a 6.2 out and back 2 weeks ago on the trail, thoroughly enjoyed it. Figured even if I have to take it slow/steady I know I can do the mileage. Looking forward to next year
ETA:Eventually I'll be able to run it the other direction but at this point doing a steady uphill over 10 miles just sounds like too much work.1 -
It has been raining all afternoon, and I had therapy clients this evening after my full time job, so I am taking today as a rest day. I tell myself that since I’m not running, I will fold some laundry. I really hate laundry.5
